Abstract:The bullwhip effect-the amplification of order variability from the downstream to the upstream stages in a multi-stage supply chain incurs significant consequence in supply chain management.Most of current works addressing the bullwhip effect focus on two-stage supply chains and assume the information distortion will be amplified in the upstream stages.However,whether the amplification effect will exist in the upstream and how it transfers deserve more investigation.Moreover,most bullwhip literature regard the actual inventory in the warehouse the same as the inventory record in the IT system.Nevertheless recent studies have reported that inventory inaccuracy is widespread and severe in industry.Therefore,it is the intent of this paper to extend the study of the bullwhip effect to multi-stages with consideration of inventory inaccuracy. This paper considers a decentralized K-stage serial supply chain with the external demand following the auto-correlated AR(1) process.We assume each stage suffers from inventory inaccuracy due to internal/external theft,unsalables,etc,which is normally distributed.It is further assumed that the supply chain follows an order-up-to policy and all the information is not shared among different parties.Based on this model setting,we build analytical inventory models to obtain the optimal order decisions in two scenarios:(1) inventory inaccuracy exists in the supply chain;(2) inventory inaccuracy is eliminated through advanced technology(such as RFID).Based on the order decisions,the bullwhip effect can be quantified in the form of order variance and the impacts of inventory inaccuracy on the bullwhip effect can then be analyzed. Our analytical and numerical results show several managerial insights.First of all,both the correlation effect of the external demand and the inventory inaccuracy in the supply chain can cause the bullwhip effect.The impacts of the two factors on the bullwhip effect is positively related,therefore the inventory inaccuracy further deteriorates the bullwhip effect.Moreover,the information distortion due to inventory inaccuracy only depends on the variance of the inventory errors,rather than the mean of the errors.It implies that if the amount of the inventory error is huge but its fluctuation is limited,the information distortion will not be substantial.Second,the variability of the external demand and inventory inaccuracy in each stage will be transferred through the order making process up the stream and will be amplified by compounding with the correlation factor of the external demand respectively.Furthermore,the information distortions due to inventory errors of all the downstream stages are accumulated in the upstream stages,resulting in exponential amplification of order variability in the upstream stages,which is more salient when inventory inaccuracy exists. Moreover,we investigate the counter-approach for the bullwhip effect with a focus on the impacts of information sharing.We assume each stage knows not only the external demand,but also the inventory errors in all its downstream stages.Therefore,the decision makers can take advantage of those shared information when forecasting the future demand in order to achieve a better decision.Based on our analytical models and numerical study,it is shown that information sharing will attenuate the bullwhip effect due to inventory errors and reduce the propagation magnitude of the information distortion.The amplification effect reduces from exponential to linear.Consequently,information sharing contributes more when inventory errors present. To this end,understanding how the external and internal information variability affects the bullwhip effect plays a key role for practitioners to make better decisions for supply chain management.
