Abstract:A uniform nonlinear resonant condition for interaction between electrostatic wave and charged particles in a uniform magnetic field is given by multi-scale expansion. It is verified by numerical simulation. It is shown that resonant heating can be produced by electrostatic wave with sub-harmonic frequency of the cyclotron. Moreover, it is shown that the heating efficiency does not increase with the amplitude of driving wave even if for the same frequency, which means there is an optimum combination of frequency and amplitude to get efficient heating.

Abstract:In this present theoretical study, an analytic formalism is developed to investigate the electrostatic lower hybrid wave by counterpropagation of two different profile laser beams in collisional plasma embedded with static magnetic field. As the counterpropagating two laser beams interact with collisional magnetized plasma, it would cause the beat wave having frequency and wave number . The beating of two laser beams produce nonlinear ponderomotive to the plasma electrons. It would have efficient potential to couple the pre-existed electrostatic lower hybrid wave and thus driven beat wave excites the electrostatic lower hybrid. Lower hybrid wave is excited much more as the beating of two different profile laser beams polarized along the electrostatic lower hybrid wave. As the beatings of two laser beams having finite y-extent, the coupled electrostatic lower hybrid wave also possess effective y-component wave number and a component of group velocity along the static magnetic field. This leads to causes the convective losses. The spatial shape of power profile of electrostatic lower hybrid wave promises that it can be much more excited with the variation in laser beam decentered parameter, beam width parameter, Hermite polynomial mode index, laser beam transverse propagation distance, electron-neutral collision frequency and electron cyclotron frequency. One may apply this theory of electrostatic lower hybrid wave excitation in electron heating and laser high harmonic generation process.

Theory of Plasma Transport Induced by Low-Frequency Hydromagnetic Waves

Abstract:On the basis of the quasi-linear limit of the nonlinear gyrokinetic equations we have derived self-consistent, comprehensive theoretical results on plasma transport induced by low-frequency hydromagnetic waves. Effects such as finite ion Larmor radii, realistic magnetic field geometries, general plasma equilibria, magnetic trapping, and arbitrary wave polarizations are included in the present analysis. Corresponding transport equations for flux tube-averaged radial fluxes of particle, energy, and parallel momentum as well as local heating and parallel flow generation rates are obtained. The resultant transport coefficients exhibit the appealing physical pictures of exchanges of energies and momenta between resonant plasma particles and hydromagnetic wave quasi-particles. The present results also indicate that radial transport generally consists of convective components in addition to the usual diffusive ones. Applications to the particle transport at the dayside magnetopause as well as the nonlinear saturation of drift Alfven-ballooning mode instabilities [Chen and Hasegawa, 1991] are also presented.

Abstract:Electrostatic lower hybrid ’’pump’’ waves are often launched into tokamak plasmas by structures (e.g., waveguides) whose dimensions are considerably smaller than characteristic plasma sizes. Such waves propagate in well-defined resonance cones and give rise to parametric instabilities driven by electron E×B velocities. The finite size of the resonance cone region determines the threshold for both convective quasi-mode decay instabilities and absolute instabilities. The excitation of absolute instabilities depends on whether a traveling or standing wave pump model is used; traveling wave pumps require the daughter waves to have a definite frequency shift. Altogether, parametric instabilities driven by E×B velocities occur for threshold fields significantly below the threshold for filamentation instabilities driven by pondermotive forces. Applications to tokamak heating show that nonlinear effects set in when a certain power-per-wave-launching port is exceeded. For sufficiently high powers, these instabilities will occur in the low-density edge region of a tokamak. They are characterized by a daughter wave frequency 10% below the pump wave frequency, in agreement with experimental observations.

Abstract:. A new set of coupled integro-differential nonlinear lower hybrid (LH) wave equations is derived in the framework of a kinetic theory coupled to the Maxwell equations to study the parametric instabilities (PI) produced by LH waves in collisional tokamak plasma. Previous models of nonlinear LH wave equations have been significantly improved. The wave equations derived overcome the limits and the incorrectness of the standard theory of the PI in inhomogeneous plasma. They allow treating the full spectrum in parallel and poloidal wavenumber of the coupled LH power wave, diffraction effects and possible cascade phenomena, which are elements of the nonlinear LH physics ignored in the standard PI theory. Numerical solutions of the new nonlinear LH wave equations are proposed. The relevant LH frequency spectra produced by PI are calculated, exhibiting characteristic features of PI observed in LH experiments. It is shown that the LH sideband amplification can be overestimated by orders of magnitude by the standard theory of PI. A benchmark of the new model is provided for spatially homogeneous plasmas. The role of the collisions for PI has been assessed. We demonstrate that previous analysis significantly overestimated their stabilization effect.

Resonant Plasma Heating below the Cyclotron Frequency

Abstract:Resonant heating of a magnetized plasma by low frequency waves of large amplitude is considered. It is shown that the magnetic moment can be changed nonadiabatically by a single large amplitude wave, even at frequencies normally considered nonresonant. Two examples clearly demonstrate the existence of the resonances leading to chaos and the generic nature of heating below the cyclotron frequency. First the classical case of an electrostatic wave of large amplitude propagating across a confining uniform magnetic field, and second a large amplitude Alfvén wave, propagating obliquely across the magnetic field. Waves with frequencies a small fraction of the cyclotron frequency are shown to produce significant heating; bringing, in the case of Alfvén waves, particles to speeds comparable to the Alfvén velocity in a few hundred cyclotron periods. Stochastic threshold for heating occurs at significantly lower amplitude with a perturbation spectrum consisting of a number of modes. This phenomenon may have relevance for the heating of ions in the solar corona as well as for ion heating in some toroidal confinement fusion devices.

Abstract:Heating of a collisionless plasma by utilizing the spatial resonance of shear Alfvén waves is proposed and application to toroidal plasmas is discussed. The resonance exists due to the nonuniform Alfvén speed. This heating scheme is analyzed in one dimension including the effects of a shear magnetic field and plasma compressibility. For plasmas with smooth nonuniformities (| k⊥l | ≫ 1, k⊥ is the wavenumber prependicular to the ambient magnetic field and the nonuniformity direction, and l is the scale length of the nonuniformity), the energy absorbed per unit surface area per driving cycle is [b02(μ0k⊥)−1]. Here, b0 is the flux density of the driving magnetic field evaluated at the resonant point. With sharp nonuniformities (| k⊥l | ≪ 1), absorption is large if the surface eigenmode is excited. The corresponding value is [b02(μ0k⊥)−1(k⊥l)−1]. Otherwise, it is [b02(μ0k⊥)−1(k⊥l)].

Abstract:Nonlinear kinetic theory of parametric instabilities is developed and applied to study the parametric process during the injection of lower hybrid waves into tokamak plasmas. Four approaches containing different nonlinear terms are numerically solved and compared. For the resonant mode decay, the quasi-linear treatment is enough for the daughter branches. However, for the quasi-mode decay, the contribution from the nonlinear response of quasi-mode should be included in the governing equations of the sidebands. The results with correct nonlinear terms can recover those from the usually used fluid-kinetic hybrid approach in the electrostatic limit, but the kinetic theory and its simplification method developed here could be more generally applied to study parametric instabilities within the full electromagnetic framework.

Abstract:Global particle simulations of the lower hybrid waves have been carried out using fully kinetic ions and drift kinetic electrons with a realistic electron-to-ion mass ratio. The lower hybrid wave frequency, mode structure, and electron Landau damping from the electrostatic simulations agree very well with the analytic theory. Linear simulation of the propagation of a lower hybrid wave-packet in the toroidal geometry shows that the wave propagates faster in the high field side than the low field side, in agreement with a ray tracing calculation. Electromagnetic benchmarks of lower hybrid wave dispersion relation are also carried out. Electromagnetic mode conversion are observed in toroidal geometry, slow waves are launched at the plasma boundary and converts to fast waves at the mode conversion layer, which is consistent with linear theory.

Abstract:Parametric instabilities during the injection of lower hybrid waves into tokamak edge plasmas have received considerable attention for affecting the current drive at high density, mainly through spectral broadening. Here, kinetic theory of parametric instabilities was revisited in the electromagnetic framework. From Vlasov–Maxwell equations in the guiding center formalism, the theory of parametric instabilities in the electromagnetic framework is presented with appropriate nonlinearity treatment. Numerical calculations are performed under realistic lower hybrid current drive experimental parameters. Comparison between the electrostatic and electromagnetic results shows that the electromagnetic corrections have a stabilizing effect on the parametric process in all decay channels. The quantitative differences in growth rates, as well as in the most unstable regions, might have a non-negligible impact on the amplification factor of the parametric instabilities. However, with the dependence of parametric instabilities on the local plasma parameters, calculations show the same tendency between the electromagnetic and electrostatic model in a wide parameter range.

Abstract:We have developed, based on the oscillating-center transformation, a general theoretical approach for self-consistent plasma dynamics including, explicitly, effects of nonlinear (higher-order) wave-particle resonances. A specific example is then given for low-frequency responses of trapped particles in axisymmetric tokamaks. Possible applications to transport as well as nonlinear wave growth/damping are also briefly discussed.

Abstract:A theoretical model is developed to explain the plasma rotations induced by lower hybrid waves in Alcator C-Mod. In this model, torodial rotations are driven by the Lorentz force on the bulk-electron flow across flux surfaces, which is a response of the plasma to the resonant-electron flow across flux surfaces induced by the lower hybrid waves. The flow across flux surfaces of the resonant electrons and the bulk electrons are coupled through the radial electric field initiated by the resonant electrons, and the friction between ions and electrons transfers the toroidal momentum to ions from electrons. An improved quasilinear theory with gyrophase dependent distribution function is developed to calculate the perpendicular resonant-electron flow. Toroidal rotations are determined using a set of fluid equations for bulk electrons and ions, which are solved numerically by a finite-difference method. Numerical results agree well with the experimental observations in terms of flow profile and amplitude. The model explains the strong correlation between torodial flow and internal inductance observed experimentally, and predicts both counter-current and co-current flows, depending on the perpendicular wave vectors of the lower hybrid waves. Abstract:We study the long-time asymptotic of the solutions to Maxwell's equation in the case of a upper-hybrid resonance in the cold plasma model. We base our analysis in the transfer to the time domain of the recent results of B. Després, L.M. Imbert-Gérard and R. Weder, J. Math. Pures Appl. {\bf 101} ( 2014) 623-659, where the singular solutions to Maxwell's equations in the frequency domain were constructed by means of a limiting absorption principle and a formula for the heating of the plasma in the limit of vanishing collision frequency was obtained. Currently there is considerable interest in these problems, in particular, because upper-hybrid resonances are a possible scenario for the heating of plasmas, and since they can be a model for the diagnostics involving wave scattering in plasmas.

Abstract:We present a theory for nonlinear, multidimensional plasma waves with phase velocities near the speed of light. It is appropriate for describing plasma waves excited when all electrons are expelled out from a finite region by either the space charge of a short electron beam or the radiation pressure of a short intense laser. It works very well for the first bucket before phase mixing occurs. We separate the plasma response into a cavity or blowout region void of all electrons and a sheath of electrons just beyond the cavity. This simple model permits the derivation of a single equation for the boundary of the cavity. It works particularly well for narrow electron bunches and for short lasers with spot sizes matched to the radius of the cavity. It is also used to describe the structure of both the accelerating and focusing fields in the wake.

Abstract:The nonlinear frequency shift is derived in a transparent asymptotic form for intense Langmuir waves in general collisionless plasma. The formula describes both fluid and kinetic effects simultaneously. The fluid nonlinearity is expressed, for the first time, through the plasma dielectric function, and the kinetic nonlinearity accounts for both smooth distributions and trapped-particle beams. Various known limiting scalings are reproduced as special cases. The calculation avoids differential equations and can be extended straightforwardly to other nonlinear plasma waves.

Abstract:High harmonic generation modulated by a weakly perturbing laser field enables new wave mixing frequency components, thus allowing in-situ spatiotemporal measurements and wavefront control of attosecond optical pulses. However, perturbative high harmonic wave mixing from plasma surfaces has not been investigated extensively. In this study, we theoretically analyze the plasma high harmonic generation process in the relativistic regime modulated by a perturbing laser field with an arbitrary frequency. New wave mixing frequency components satisfying the conservation laws of photon energy and momentum are observed. The wave mixing component intensities adhere to a power law for the perturbating laser photon number as the perturbing laser intensity increases, thereby revealing perturbative behaviors in the nonperturbative, extremely nonlinear optical process of high harmonic generation. Detailed studies reveal the polarization selection rule and physical mechanism of high harmonic wave mixing. The modulation of the relativistic factor or mass enhancement of electrons on the plasma surface by the perturbing laser field is believed to result in high harmonic wave mixing in the relativistic regime.

Abstract:The heating of charged particles by a linearly polarized and obliquely propagating shear Alfvén wave (SAW) at frequencies a fraction of the charged particle cyclotron frequency is demonstrated both analytically and numerically. Applying Lie perturbation theory, with the wave amplitude as the perturbation parameter, the resonance conditions in the laboratory frame are systematically derived. At the lowest order, one recovers the well-known linear cyclotron resonance condition k∥v∥−ω−nΩ=0, where v∥ is the particle velocity parallel to the background magnetic field, k∥ is the parallel wave number, ω is the wave frequency, Ω is the gyrofrequency, and n is any integer. At higher orders, however, one discovers a novel nonlinear cyclotron resonance condition given by k∥v∥−ω−nΩ∕2=0. Analytical predictions on the locations of fixed points, widths of resonances, and resonance overlapping criteria for global stochasticity are also found to agree with those given by computed Poincaré surfaces of section.

Abstract:A set of moment relations, which can describe the charged fluids response to an intense pump laser, and a linearization substitution relation, which is more appropriate as compared with the past treatment, are given by theoretical analyses. The relevant equations of state (adiabatic and isothermal), momentum and energy equations are derived self-consistently. The dispersion relations of the electron plasma wave and the ion acoustic wave driven by an intense pump laser field are obtained. The results show that the frequencies of both the excited electron plasma wave and the excited ion acoustic wave have a great modification in the case of strong pump. The former bears out the theoretical result obtained from Vlasov equation and the later is consistent with experimental observations. It is proved that the zero-frequency component of the laser light wave contribution to the plasma pressure tensor is un-neglected, which implies a greatly change to the wave excitation properties, particularly in the direction of parallel or approximately parallel to the laser field vector.
Particle Simulations on Propagation and Resonance of Lower Hybrid Wave Launched by Phased Array Antenna in Linear Devices

Abstract:In this work, we performed first-principles electromagnetic-kinetic simulations to study a phased antenna array and its interaction with deuterium plasmas within the lower hybrid range of frequency. We first gave wave accessibility and resonance results, which agree well with theoretical prediction. In addition, we further investigated the antenna power spectrum with different antenna phases in the presence of the plasma and compared it with that in a vacuum, which directly indicates wave coupling and plasma absorption. Furthermore, for the case with zero phasing difference, our simulation results show that, albeit the launch is away from the accessibility region, tunneling effect and mode conversion occurred, which enhanced coupling and absorption. Moreover, consistent interactions between the injected wave and the plasma concerning various antenna phase differences are shown. We presented the inchoate response of the plasma in terms of the launching directions. Our results could be favorable for the engineering design of wave heating experiments with a tunable phased antenna array in linear devices, such as simple magnetic mirrors or tandem mirrors.
