Abstract:A method for computer-generated hologram (CGH) compression and transmission using a quantum back-propagation neural network (QBPNN) is proposed, with the Fresnel transform technique adopted for image reconstruction of the compressed and transmitted CGH. Experiments of simulation were conducted to compare the reconstructed images from CGHs processed using a QBPNN with those processed using a back-propagation neural network (BPNN) at the optimal learning coefficients. The experimental results show that the method using a QBPNN could produce reconstructed images with a better quality than those obtained using a BPNN despite the use of fewer learning iterations at the same compression ratio. Application of Pulse Compression with a Doppler Shift Using Neural Network

Abstract:Common biphase pulse compression techniques were not very robustness against Doppler distortions, and the peak signal-to-noise ratio of these methods was not very high. Kwan and Lee (1993) presented a pulse compression approach by using a neural network. A 40 dB peak signal-to-noise ratio can be achieved. Based on Kwan and Lee's method, we present an improved BP (backpropagation) algorithm. The robustness against Doppler distortions and the output peak signal-to-noise ratio of the improved algorithm are examined. The improved method get a 50 dB output peak signal-to-noise ratio, about 10 dB higher than Kwan and Lee's method. The improved method also has a better Doppler resistance ability.
Computer-Generated Holograms For 3d Objects Using The Fresnel Zone Plate

Abstract:A new fast algorithm using the "host" Fresnel zone plate was proposed to improve the computational efficiency of computer-generated hologram (CGH) for 3D objects. By reading.3DS files, the spatial position information of each point of the 3D object was obtained directly. With the illumination of plane wave, the "host" Fresnel zone plate of a single point could be equal to all points located in the same depth plane - as the Fresnel zone plate was translated and superimposed along the horizontal and vertical axes. Consequently, the hologram of a 3D object could be built up by superimposing different Fresnel zone plates in the corresponding depth planes. For a digital object composed of 1060 points, it cost about 83s to generate a hologram of 1024*768 pixels. The CGH of 3D objects with the results of the reconstruction was presented in this paper, which proved the feasibility of this algorithm.

Abstract:The reproduction of computer-generated hologram (CGH) with white light source was realized using a liquid crystal panel instead of holographic film. The Burch-coding CGH was achieved by simulating the interference of a digital image and virtual reference light, displayed on liquid crystal displays and illuminated by a white light-emitting diode. The system is compact and the reconstructed images include full parallax. The full-parallax images of the Fresnel hologram computed with our algorithm were compared with the reproduced images by the rainbow hologram. Abstract:We propose an attention-based deep convolutional neural network for computer generated hologram (CGH) compression, where a channel attention mechanism is applied to both computer generated hologram compression and reconstruction. By applying deep convolutional neural networks in the compression process, we can extract more compact and representative information than bicubic interpolation. Additionally, a channel attention mechanism is applied to selectively emphasize informative features and suppress less useful ones for both CGH compression and reconstruction. By employing attention mechanisms to enhance the feature representation ability of deep convolutional neural networks, we can further improve the performance of the reconstructed computer generated hologram. Experimental results show our method can better recover the compressed computer generated hologram than only employing convolutional neural networks in the reconstruction process.

Abstract:Joint photographic experts group (JPEG) compression standard is widely adopted for digital images. However, as JPEG encoding is not designed for holograms, applying it typically leads to severe distortions in holographic projections. In this work, we overcome this problem by taking into account the influence of JPEG compression on hologram generation in an end-to-end fashion. To this end, we introduce a novel approach to merge the process of hologram generation and JPEG compression with one differentiable model, enabling joint optimization via efficient first-order solvers. Our JPEG-aware end-to-end optimized holograms show significant improvements compared to conventional holograms compressed using JPEG standard both in simulation and on experimental display prototype. Specifically, the proposed algorithm shows improvements of 4 dB in peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and 0.27 in structural similarity (SSIM) metrics, under the same compression rate. When maintained with the same reconstruction quality, our method reduces the size of compressed holograms by about 35% compared to conventional JPEG-compressed holograms. Consistent with simulations, the experimental results further demonstrate that our method is robust to JPEG compression loss. Moreover, our method generates holograms compatible with the JPEG standard, making it friendly to a wide range of commercial software and edge devices.
Reduction on the Reconstruction Error of Computer-generated Holography in Liquid Crystal Panels

Abstract:A new algorithm for calculating computer-generated holograms (CGH's) is proposed. The hologram fringe pattern data is stored in the computer image format, and transmitted to a transmission-type liquid crystal panel by the video signal. It will be used for the real-time three-dimension imaging by holographic reconstruction. Questions of the effect of the solution, the contrast ratio of the liquid crystal panel and the modulation due to the gray-level of the hologram image are addressed. Therefore the distribution of the amplitude and phase on the holographic plane is determinated by confirming image plane distribution considering the above effects. The reconstructed data is made as similar as possible to the source data by the optimal code. Experimental results,and value the quality of the reconstructed image are given.

Abstract:A hologram always contains redundancy. Its huge information content brings difficulties in the storage and transmission. In addition, when a computer-generated hologram (CGH) is reproduced, the zero-order diffraction spot which occupies most of energy reduces the contrast of reproduced image and disturbs the observation and recording. In this paper, discrete cosine transform (DCT) is used to compress the information content of a CGH and to eliminate the zero-order spot. Numerical simulation results showed that, DCT could effectively remove about 64.8% of the redundancy without affecting the quality of reconstruction. It also eliminated the zero-order spot and improved the contrast of reproduced image. Finally, the optical reconstruction results were shown. Numerical and optical experiments both proved that, the reconstructed image after compression almost did not lose any resolution that human eyes could perceive.

Abstract:Abstract. A two-stage compression framework for computer-generated hologram (CGH) with compressed sensing (CS) and quantum-inspired neural network (QINN) is proposed. A deep learning-based CS model is applied to sample the CGH at sub-Nyquist rates to generate measurements, and its more compact and representative information using interblock information is further extracted by QINN. With two-stage compression framework, the CGH is greatly compressed and suitable for storage and transmission. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed two-stage compression framework can preserve more important holographic information during the compression, thus significantly improving the overall quality of reconstructed images compared to only using CS or QINN.

Abstract:It is a critical issue to reduce the enormous amount of data in the processing, storage and transmission of a hologram in digital format. In photograph compression, the JPEG standard is commonly supported by almost every system and device. It will be favorable if JPEG standard is applicable to hologram compression, with advantages of universal compatibility. However, the reconstructed image from a JPEG compressed hologram suffers from severe quality degradation since some high frequency features in the hologram will be lost during the compression process. In this work, we employ a deep convolutional neural network to reduce the artifacts in a JPEG compressed hologram. Simulation and experimental results reveal that our proposed "JPEG + deep learning" hologram compression scheme can achieve satisfactory reconstruction results for a computer-generated phase-only hologram after compression.

Abstract:Holographic displays are ideal display technologies for virtual and augmented reality because all visual cues are provided. However, real-time high-quality holographic displays are difficult to achieve because the generation of high-quality computer-generated hologram (CGH) is inefficient in existing algorithms. Here, complex-valued convolutional neural network (CCNN) is proposed for phase-only CGH generation. The CCNN-CGH architecture is effective with a simple network structure based on the character design of complex amplitude. A holographic display prototype is set up for optical reconstruction. Experiments verify that state-of-the-art performance is achieved in terms of quality and generation speed in existing end-to-end neural holography methods using the ideal wave propagation model. The generation speed is three times faster than HoloNet and one-sixth faster than Holo-encoder, and the Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) is increased by 3 dB and 9 dB, respectively. Real-time high-quality CGHs are generated in 1920×1072 and 3840×2160 resolutions for dynamic holographic displays.

Abstract:In this paper,we mainly research that during BP neural network image compression processing the high-low spatial frequencies distribution differences of an image lead to the poor edge quality problem of reconstructed image.Therefore,we present a new image processing structure of BP neural network image compression with JPEG baseline algorithm,and established this image processing system.Through making some experiments using a grayscale Lena image,the experiment results tell us that this processing structure brings not only the higher compression ratio,but also the better PSNR.Moreover,it also testifies that this adaptive image processing method is feasible,and can reconstruct image efficiently and steadily.

Abstract:Deep learning-based computer-generated holography (CGH) has developed rapidly and yielded remarkable outcomes. However, CGH rendering technologies are confronted with a significant challenge in transmitting massive holograms, which hinders the development of lightweight wearable near-eye holographic displays. Currently, hologram compression frameworks share a resemblance with image compression methods, which fail take into account the human visual system in practical near-eye displays, limiting the improvement of compression efficiency. Herein, we presented an efficient holographic compression framework based on foveated rendering, where we transmitted a high-resolution foveal region at a low compression rate and a low-resolution peripheral region at a high compression rate with dramatically reduced pixel numbers. Our method achieved a compression rate of 40× for a hologram resolution of 1024 × 1024, which represents a twofold increase in compression rate compared to the state-of-the-art (SOTA) method with a PSNR of ∼28.8 dB in the foveal image. Moreover, we further demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method in the optical experiment. We believe the proposed approach could be a viable remedy for the evergrowing data issue in near-eye holographic displays.

Abstract:An image compression scheme for BP neural network with SPIHT algorithm is presented to solve the poor image quality and low convergence speed in high spatial frequency information compression of BP neural network image.In researching,the original grayscale image is converted to the wavelet coefficients using wavelet transform.SPIHT algorithm is adopted to quantize and encode the wavelet coefficients.And then the image code stream is transmitted to BP neural network for a further compression.In experiment,this system not only can get a better PSNR even under high compression ratio,but also avoid the "tiling" effect,and the convergence speed of BP neural network image processing is improved.

Abstract:Holographic three-dimensional(3D)display can reconstruct the light field of a real scene,providing all depth cues and becoming one of the best solutions for true 3D display.Computer-generated holographic 3D display only needs to know the mathematical description of the object light wave,can flexibly control the wavefront,and display a virtual 3D object.However,the huge amount of data and the amount of calculations hinder the practical application of computer-generated holographic 3D display.This paper presented data compression coding techniques for multiple stages in computer-generated holographic 3D display,including sparse sampling of 3D objects,optimization and parameter optimization of holographic 3D video compression coding,holographic fractal compression algorithm,effectively reducing the amount of data.And the parallel computing capabilities of GPUs were utilized to enable fast calculation of holograms.

Abstract:In holographic three-dimensional (3D) display, holograms for reconstructing 3D scenes require huge storage space and high transmission bandwidth. Holographic data must be compressed for practical applications. The holograms for 3D display are commonly represented in pure-phase format. Existing hologram compression techniques are generally not designed to handle phase-only holograms. In this paper, we propose a phase-difference-based compression method to compress phase-only holograms for holographic 3D display. Phase-only holograms are decomposed into grayscale images representing the phase distance and binary images containing the sign information of the phase difference. The grayscale images can be better handled by common image compression algorithms since their pixel values are proportional to the phase distance reflecting the distance between complex amplitudes. The binary images are compressed by lossless bi-level image coding. The compressed grayscale images and binary images can be synthesized to recover the phase-only holograms and reconstruct the 3D scenes. The advantages of the proposed method over existing image coding standards are verified by numerical simulations.

Abstract:An image compression and transmission system of BP neural network with hyperbolic tangent non-linear function and adding mean quantization algorithm is presented to improve the information processing ability of neural network.Through applying the hyperbolic tangent non-linear function to experiments,we have found that the image processing quality of BP neural network was improved,and effectiveness of the function was testified.Based on this,we also adopt the adding mean quantization algorithm to improve the neural network training speed of image processing.By analyzing the experiment results,we found that this method not only keeps the image processing quality,but also shortens the whole network transmission time.
