Abstract:Based on the hybrid frequency-domain (FD) and time-domain (TD) radiative transfer equation (RTE), a novel reconstruction strategy is developed to retrieve the optical parameter fields in the participating medium. The discrete ordinate method is employed to solve the forward FD and TD RTE to simulate the radiative transfer process. The sequential quadratic programming is utilized to solve the inverse problem for obtaining the optical parameters combined with an adjoint method. The Otsu algorithm is applied to the FD reconstructed results to distinguish the target region and the background region. To overcome the ill-posedness of the inverse problem, the generalized Gaussian Markov random field model is employed as the regularization term in the objective function. Various numerical experiments are studied and all results demonstrate that the proposed hybrid reconstruction scheme is suitable for efficient and accurate optical tomography by combining the FD and TD radiative transfer models. Meanwhile, the crosstalk of the ill-posed inverse problem can be alleviated effectively.

Abstract:The main disadvantage of optical tomography is the low spatial resolution, in order to conquer it, a new combination reconstruction algorithm is proposed, where the MRI anatomical structural information is incorporated into the optical tomography based on the transport equation. In the process of reconstruction, the structural information from MRI is used to determine the initial distribution of optical properties and the specific steps are presented in detail. The Levenberg Marquardt algorithm is introduced to implement the optimized computation of the objective function, in which the values of hyper parameters are critical to the reconstructed results. In experiments, phantoms simulating the breast tissue are presented to verify this algorithm, and the corresponding images reconstructed by algorithms with and without MRI prior information are given. And then, the impacts of hyper parameters and the number of source-detector pairs on reconstructed results are discussed, and a few criteria are presented to evaluate the quality of reconstructed images. Finally, by the comparison of reconstructed results, it can be concluded that this new reconstruction algorithm with MRI prior information can achieve more accurate reconstructed results, improve the spatial resolution of images and the localization of abnormal region.

Abstract:Optical tomography is an emerging and important molecular imaging modality. The aim of optical tomography is to reconstruct optical properties of human tissues. In this paper, we focus on reconstructing the absorption coefficient based on the radiative transfer equation (RTE). It is an ill-posed parameter identification problem. Regularization methods have been broadly applied to reconstruct the optical coefficients, such as the total variation (TV) regularization and the L1 regularization. In order to better reconstruct the piecewise constant and sparse coefficient distributions, TV and L1 norms are combined as the regularization. The forward problem is discretized with the discontinuous Galerkin method on the spatial space and the finite element method on the angular space. The minimization problem is solved by a Jacobian-based Levenberg-Marquardt type method which is equipped with a split Bregman algorithms for the L1 regularization. We use the adjoint method to compute the Jacobian matrix which dramatically improves the computation efficiency. By comparing with the other imaging reconstruction methods based on TV and L1 regularizations, the simulation results show the validity and efficiency of the proposed method.

Abstract:The phase of the object contains the depth, shape, refractive index and other information of the object surface, which is more important than the intensity. As a classical phase retrieval algorithm, the Transport of Intensity Equation(TIE) can directly obtain the phase calculated from the known intensity. In this paper, a new algorithm is proposed to reconstruct the three-dimensional phase information of an object by tomography. The algorithm obtains high-precision phase input through the high-order TIE, and then reconstructs the three-dimensional phase information of the object by using Fourier slice theorem backprojection tomography. The experimental results show that the algorithm can solve the problem of low phase accuracy caused by intensity differential approximation constraints, and can obtain high-precision 3D phase reconstruction results of objects.
Fast three-dimensional phase retrieval in propagation-based x-ray tomography

Abstract:The following paper describes a method for three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of multi-material objects based on propagation-based X-ray phase-contrast tomography (PB-CT) with phase retrieval using the homogenous form of the Transport-of-Intensity equation (TIE-Hom). Unlike conventional PB-CT algorithms that perform phase retrieval of individual projections, the described post-reconstruction phase-retrieval method is applied in 3D to a localised region of the CT-reconstructed volume. We demonstrate via numerical simulations the accuracy and noise characteristics of the method under a variety of experimental conditions, comparing it to both conventional absorption tomography and two-dimensional (2D) TIE-Hom phase retrieval applied to projection images. The results indicate that the 3D post-reconstruction method generally achieves a modest improvement in noise suppression over existing PB-CT methods. It is also shown that potentially large computational gains over projection-based phase retrieval for multi-material samples are possible. In particular, constraining phase retrieval to a localised 3D region of interest reduces the overall computational cost and eliminates the need for multiple CT reconstructions and global 2D phase retrieval operations for each material within the sample.

Abstract:The model-based reconstruction algorithm is adopted in order to conquer the ill-posedness in optical tomography.An edge-preserving,global smoothing generalized Gaussian Markov random field(GGMRF) is imported into optical tomography reconstruction based on the radiative transfer equation in this paper.The iteration optimization method is used to solve the objective function with the GGMRF model by maximizing the a posterior probability,but the gradient computation of the objective function with respect to optical parameters is difficult.Therefore,a novel gradient computation strategy based on gradient tree is proposed.Experimental results show that this kind of reconstruction technology can improve the image reconstruction quality and decrease the ill-posedness compared to the reconstruction algorithm without priori model.

Abstract:Time-resolved optical computer tomographic imaging has received considerable interest recently because of its non-invasiveness and non-destructiveness to biological tissue, and several attempts have been made for its implementation. The image recovery algorithm described in this paper is based on the finite-element method solution to the diffusion equation as the photon transport model. By formulating image reconstruction as an optimization problem with the objective function expressed by the error norm between actual and modeled measurement sets, this algorithm incorporates a direct search optimization method, the rotating coordinates method, into the solution strategy to avoid excessive computation of the time-consuming forward problem. Several numerically simulated results for the images of the absorption and scattering coefficient distribution within a circular tissue, reconstructed from the integrated intensity, the mean time of photon flight or their weighted sum, are given. The influence of the numbers of stimulating sources and boundary detection points on the resulting images is discussed. Finally, this paper concludes that the reconstruction algorithm used is feasible but needs to be improved in its accuracy and efficiency.

Abstract:An efficient and robust method based on the complex-variable-differentiation method (CVDM) is proposed to reconstruct the distribution of optical parameters in two-dimensional participating media. An upwind-difference discrete-ordinate formulation of the time-domain radiative transfer equation is well established and used as forward model. The regularization term using generalized Gaussian Markov random field model is added in the objective function to overcome the ill-posed nature of the radiative inverse problem. The multi-start conjugate gradient method was utilized to accelerate the convergence speed of the inverse procedure. To obtain an accurate result and avoid the cumbersome formula of adjoint differentiation model, the CVDM was employed to calculate the gradient of objective function with respect to the optical parameters. All the simulation results show that the CVDM is efficient and robust for the reconstruction of optical parameters.

Abstract:Diffuse optical tomography is a novel molecular imaging technology for small animal studies. Most known reconstruction methods use the diffusion equation (DA) as forward model, although the validation of DA breaks down in certain situations. In this work, we use the radiative transfer equation as forward model which provides an accurate description of the light propagation within biological media and investigate the potential of sparsity constraints in solving the diffuse optical tomography inverse problem. The feasibility of the sparsity reconstruction approach is evaluated by boundary angular-averaged measurement data and internal angular-averaged measurement data. Simulation results demonstrate that in most of the test cases the reconstructions with sparsity regularization are both qualitatively and quantitatively more reliable than those with standard L-2 regularization. Results also show the competitive performance of the split Bregman algorithm for the DOT image reconstruction with sparsity regularization compared with other existing L-1 algorithms.

Iterative Total Least-Squares Image Reconstruction Algorithm for Optical Tomography by the Conjugate Gradient Method

Abstract:We present an iterative total least-squares algorithm for computing images of the interior structure of highly scattering media by using the conjugate gradient method. For imaging the dense scattering media in optical tomography, a perturbation approach has been described previously [T. Wang et al., Proc. SPIE 1641, 58 (1992); R. L. Barbour et al., in Medical Optical Tomography: Functional Imaging and Monitoring (Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers, Bellingham, Wash., 1993), pp. 87-120], which solves a perturbation equation of the form W Delta x = Delta I. In order to solve this equation, least-squares or regularized least-squares solvers have been used in the past to determine best fits to the measurement data Delta I while assuming that the operator matrix W is accurate. In practice, errors also occur in the operator matrix. Here we propose an iterative total least-squares (ITLS) method that minimizes the errors in both weights and detector readings. Theoretically, the total least-squares (TLS) solution is given by the singular vector of the matrix [W\Delta I] associated with the smallest singular value. The proposed ITLS method obtains this solution by using a conjugate gradient method that is particularly suitable for very large matrices. Simulation results have shown that the TLS method can yield a significantly more accurate result than the least-squares method. (C) 1997 Optical Society of America.
Regularized Reconstruction for Optical Tomography Based on Transport Equation

Abstract:To improve the ill-posedness in reconstruction process, a regularized reconstruction algorithm for the optical tomography based on the radiative transport equation is proposed, and two criterions with smoothness - the image entropy and the local smoothing function are incorporated as regularized items. After introducing its forward model, the regularized reconstruction algorithm is presented based on the smoothing criterion. The reconstruction is an optimization process on the objective function in essence, and the objective function contains the error function between the predicted data and the measurement data, and the regularized function. A gradient computation algorithm based on the gradient tree is proposed for realizing the aforementioned optimization. Experimental results show that the regularized reconstruction algorithm can effectively decrease the ill-posedness of the reconstruction, and improve reconstruction quality compared with the reconstruction without the regularization item.

Abstract:Accuracy of measurement data has direct bearing on the quality of optical tomography, and in some special tissues, the region of interested is not at the center. Therefore, a new optimization strategy of fiber positions is proposed for the special case. In the new strategy, sources and detectors are located nearest to the surface of region of interested. On the other hand, the transport model of photon also has important effect on the reconstructed results, and diffuse equation is often used in many researches. However, diffusion model has great disadvantages for many cases, so the equation of radiative transfer is imported in this paper. In the reconstruction process, a gradient tree algorithm is put forward to implement the gradient computation of objective function with respect to optical parameters. Experimental results show that the quality of reconstructed images and convergence of reconstruction process are greatly improved based on the equation of radiative transfer with the optimized strategy, and the computation complexity is also significantly reduced at the same time.

Abstract:Optical tomography reconstruction is an ill-posed problem and the errors in the measurement data will be amplified in the process of reconstruction.In order to solve the problem of ill-posedness,a new kind of reconstruction algorithm was proposed in this paper,in which the Generalized Gaussian Markov Random Field(GGMRF) was used to model the unknown image.The reconstruction process was an optimization process on objective function in essence,but the gradient computation of the objective function with respect to optical parameters was difficult.Therefore,a novel gradient computation strategy based on gradient tree was presented.In experiments,reconstructed results corresponding to the absorption coefficients and the scattering coefficients were given.In order to evaluate the quality of reconstructed images,three criteria were imported,and their values for images from different reconstruction algorithms were listed.Finally,the validity of the model-based reconstruction algorithm was analyzed by the comparison of reconstructed images and the values of three criteria.

Abstract:Radio tomgographic imaging (RTI) is a method of imaging the attenuation caused by object's obstruction within the area surrounded by wireless sensor nodes. The image reconstruction of RTI is an ill-posed problem because the pixels are more than the RSS measurements. Therefore, conventional methods such as least square method are not applicable because the solutions amplify the noise by dividing small singular values. In this paper, we discuss three algorithms i.e. LBP, Tikhonov regularization and projected Landweber iteration to obtain the imaging results. LBP is very simple and needs little hardware resources. Tikhonov regularization method makes a good balance between image quality and regularization error and we use L-curve method to choose regularization parameter. Projected Landweber iteration method can further improve the imaging results while it needs lots of computation. All the three algorithms can be used to meet different requirement of applications. The experiment results are also presented to validate the effectiveness of algorithms.
Frequency Domain Optical Tomography in Human Tissue

Abstract:In this paper, a reconstruction algorithm for frequency-domain optical tomography in human tissue is presented. A fast and efficient multigrid finite difference (MGFD) method is adopted as a forward solver to obtain the simulated detector responses and the required imaging operator. The solutions obtained form MGFD method for 3D problems with weakly discontinuous cocoefficients are compared with analyzed solutions to determine the accuracy of the numerical method. Simultaneous reconstruction of both absorption and scattering coefficients for tissue-like media is accomplished by solving a perturbation equation using the Born approximation. This solution is obtained by a conjugate gradient descent method with Tikhonov regularization. Two examples are given to show the quality of the reconstruction results. Both involve the examination of anatomically accurate optical models of tissue derived from segmented 3D magnetic resonance images to which have been assigned optical coefficients to the designated tissue types. One is a map of a female breast containing two small 'added pathologies', such as tumors. The other is a map of the brain containing a 'local bleeding' area, representing a hemorrhage. The reconstruction results show that the algorithm is computationally practical and can yield qualitatively correct geometry of the objects embedded in the simulated human tissue. Acceptable results are obtaiend even when 10% noise is present in the data.
TomoGRAF: A Robust and Generalizable Reconstruction Network for Single-View Computed Tomography

Abstract:Computed tomography (CT) provides high spatial resolution visualization of 3D structures for scientific and clinical applications. Traditional analytical/iterative CT reconstruction algorithms require hundreds of angular data samplings, a condition that may not be met in practice due to physical and mechanical limitations. Sparse view CT reconstruction has been proposed using constrained optimization and machine learning methods with varying success, less so for ultra-sparse view CT reconstruction with one to two views. Neural radiance field (NeRF) is a powerful tool for reconstructing and rendering 3D natural scenes from sparse views, but its direct application to 3D medical image reconstruction has been minimally successful due to the differences between optical and X-ray photon transportation. Here, we develop a novel TomoGRAF framework incorporating the unique X-ray transportation physics to reconstruct high-quality 3D volumes using ultra-sparse projections without prior. TomoGRAF captures the CT imaging geometry, simulates the X-ray casting and tracing process, and penalizes the difference between simulated and ground truth CT sub-volume during training. We evaluated the performance of TomoGRAF on an unseen dataset of distinct imaging characteristics from the training data and demonstrated a vast leap in performance compared with state-of-the-art deep learning and NeRF methods. TomoGRAF provides the first generalizable solution for image-guided radiotherapy and interventional radiology applications, where only one or a few X-ray views are available, but 3D volumetric information is desired.
