Abstract:Music can trigger human emotion. This is a psychophysiological process. Therefore, using psychophysiological characteristics could be a way to understand individual music emotional experience. In this study, we explore a new method of personal music emotion recognition based on human physiological characteristics. First, we build up a database of features based on emotions related to music and a database based on physiological signals derived from music listening including EDA, PPG, SKT, RSP, and PD variation information. Then linear regression, ridge regression, support vector machines with three different kernels, decision trees, k-nearest neighbors, multi-layer perceptron, and Nu support vector regression (NuSVR) are used to recognize music emotions via a data synthesis of music features and human physiological features. NuSVR outperforms the other methods. The correlation coefficient values are 0.7347 for arousal and 0.7902 for valence, while the mean squared errors are 0.023 23 for arousal and 0.014 85 for valence. Finally, we compare the different data sets and find that the data set with all the features (music features and all physiological features) has the best performance in modeling. The correlation coefficient values are 0.6499 for arousal and 0.7735 for valence, while the mean squared errors are 0.029 32 for arousal and 0.015 76 for valence. We provide an effective way to recognize personal music emotional experience, and the study can be applied to personalized music recommendation.
Self-Interfaces: Utilizing Real-Time Biofeedback in the Wild to Elicit Subconscious Behavior Change

Abstract:Self-Interfaces are interfaces that intuitively communicate relevant subconscious physiological signals through biofeedback to give the user insight into their behavior and assist them in creating behavior change. The human heartbeat is a good example of an intuitive and relevant haptic biofeedback; does not distract and is only felt when the heart beats fast. In this work, we discuss the design and development of a wearable haptic Self-Interface for Electrodermal Activity (EDA). EDA is a covert physiological signal correlated with high and low arousal affective states. We will evaluate the effectiveness of the EDA Self-Interface based on its intuitiveness, its ability to generate useful insight, whether this insight leads to behavior change, and whether the user can develop an intuitive awareness of their EDA over time when the device is removed. We hope the findings from this study will help us establish a series of guidelines for development of other Self-Interfaces in the future.

Abstract:For a significant part of its history, archetype theory has been undermined by criticisms containing unexamined Cartesian assumptions. Such assumptions treat all cognition as disembodied, consisting of mere manipulation of abstract, inherently meaningless signs mimicked from verbal instruction or cultural learning. Since the 1980s, due to the results of many independent disciplines, however, this view is being replaced with one of embodied cognition. This shift has important consequences for archetype theory, allowing us to provide a non-reductive biological anchor that explains many characteristics of the archetypal image.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to examine the utility of physiological compliance (PC) to understand shared experience in a multiuser technological environment involving active and passive users. Common ground is critical for effective collaboration and important for multiuser technological systems that include passive users since this kind of user typically does not have control over the technology being used. An experiment was conducted with 48 participants who worked in two-person groups in a multitask environment under varied task and technology conditions. Indicators of PC were measured from participants' cardiovascular and electrodermal activities. The relationship between these PC indicators and collaboration outcomes, such as performance and subjective perception of the system, was explored. Results indicate that PC is related to group performance after controlling for task/technology conditions. PC is also correlated with shared perceptions of trust in technology among group members. PC is a useful tool for monitoring group processes and, thus, can be valuable for the design of collaborative systems. This study has implications for understanding effective collaboration.

Abstract:Interoception is the perception of the body's internal signals in response to various external and internal stimuli. The present study uses a novel method adapted from the CARdiac Elevation Detection Task to examine cardiac interoception objectively and subjectively in a unique context—in the presence of art. Self-report questionnaires were used to measure subjective interoceptive awareness, subjective interoceptive accuracy, and aesthetic appreciation. For objective interoceptive accuracy and sensibility, a wearable device (Shimmer) measured heart rate (HR) and connected to a mobile application to prompt two questions: "Is your heart beating faster than usual?" and "How confident are you in your previous response?" Participants explored an art gallery for 40 minutes while the Shimmer measured their HR and randomly prompted them to answer the questions. Using a Generalized Estimating Equation model, interoceptive sensibility was not found to predict the odds of submitting a correct response. It was also found that art does not improve participants' perceptions of their HR. Finally, there was no relation between aesthetic appreciation and subjective or objective cardiac interoception. Despite lack of statistical significance, the current study's method presents an improved method by examining interoceptive accuracy in the moment under ecological conditions. To date, findings and methods used in interoception are inconsistent or flawed; the value in the current study lies in the development and demonstration of a method to examine how the environment influences the body and self-awareness across a wide variety of contexts, thereby offering a possible standardized measure of interoception for investigators to adopt.

Abstract:The view of embodied emotion believes that emotions are the emotions of the body. While emotion-specific patterns of self-reported bodily sensation have been previously reported, the physiological bodily representation across emotions remains to be addressed. The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of multi-site bodily electrodermal representations of emotions. A multi-channel electrodermal measurement device was designed to record electrodermal activities from nine body sites (neck, back, chest, bilateral abdomen, bilateral wrist, and bilateral ankle) from thirty-six college students (all male), while they were presented with a series of emotional pictures. Using the integral skin conductance response feature and a random forest classification method, the classification of high and low arousal levels achieved an average classification accuracy of 80.4±8.1%, and the classification of positive, neutral, and negative states reached an average classification accuracy of 76.4±10.2%. The classification models for arousal and valence were found to rely on distinct bodily representations. Meanwhile, the classification results of multi-site measurement were significantly better than single-site results. Our findings for the first time illustrate the bodily electrodermal representations of emotion and suggest the feasibility of affective computing using bodily electrodermal signals.

Abstract:A growing body of recent work has shown the feasibility of brain and body sensors as input to interactive systems. However, the interaction techniques and design decisions for their effective use are not well defined. We present a conceptual framework for considering implicit input from the brain, along with design principles and patterns we have developed from our work. We also describe a series of controlled, offline studies that lay the foundation for our work with functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) neuroimaging, as well as our real-time platform that serves as a testbed for exploring brain-based adaptive interaction techniques. Finally, we present case studies illustrating the principles and patterns for effective use of brain data in human--computer interaction. We focus on signals coming from the brain, but these principles apply broadly to other sensor data and in domains such as aviation, education, medicine, driving, and anything involving multitasking or varying cognitive workload.

Abstract:Abstract This paper investigates the role technology and neuroscience play in aiding the design process and making meaningful connections between people and nature. Using two workshops as a vehicle, the team introduced advanced technologies and Quantified Self practices that allowed people to use neural data and pattern recognition as feedback for the design process. The objective is to find clues to natural elements of human perception that can inform the design to meet goals for well-being. A pattern network of geometric shapes that achieve a higher level of monitored meditation levels and point toward a positive emotional valence is proposed. By referencing biological forms found in nature, the workshops utilized an algorithmic process that explored how nature can influence architecture. To measure the impact, the team used FaceOSC for capture and an Artificial Neural Network for micro-expression recognition, and a MindWave sensor manufactured by NeuroSky, which documented the human response further. The methodology allowed us to establish a boundary logic, ranking geometric shapes that suggested positive emotions and a higher level of monitored meditation levels. The results pointed us to a deeper level of understanding relative to geometric shapes in design. They indicate a new way to predict how well-being factors can clarify and rationalize a more intuitive design process inspired by nature.

Abstract:Abstract Bodily self-consciousness, the state of mind that allows humans to be aware of their own body, forms the backdrop for almost every human experience, yet its underpinnings remain elusive. Here we combine an ingestible, minimally invasive capsule with surface electrogastrography to probe if gut physiology correlates with bodily self-consciousness during a virtual bodily illusion. We discover that specific patterns of stomach and bowel activity (temperature, pressure, pH, and gastric peak frequency) covary with specific facets of bodily self-consciousness (feelings of body agency, location, and disembodiment). These results uncover the hitherto untapped potential of minimally invasive probes to study the link between mental and gut states, and reveal a deep visceral pathway to the self-conscious perception of ourselves as embodied beings.
ANSLAB: Integrated multichannel peripheral biosignal processing in psychophysiological science

Abstract:Psychophysiological science employs a large variety of signals from the human body that index the activity of the peripheral nervous system. This allows for studying interactions of psychological and physiological processes that are relevant for understanding cognition, emotion, and psychopathology. The multidimensional nature of the data and the interactions between different physiological signals represent a methodological and computational challenge. Analysis software in this domain is often limited in its coverage of the signals from different physiological systems, and therefore only partially addresses these challenges. ANSLAB (short for Autonomic Nervous System Laboratory) is an integrated software suite that supports data visualization, artifact detection, data reduction, automated processing, and statistical analysis for a large range of autonomic, respiratory, and muscular measures. Analysis modules for cardiovascular (e.g., electrocardiogram, heart rate variability, blood pressure wave, pulse wave, and impedance cardiography), electrodermal (skin conductance level and responses), respiratory (respiratory pattern, timing, and volume variables, as well as capnography), and muscular (eye-blink startle, facial and bodily electromyography) systems are complemented by specialized modules (e.g., body temperature and accelerometry, cross-spectral analysis of respiratory and cardiac measures, signal averaging, and statistical analysis) and productivity-enhancing features (batched processing, fully automatized analyses, and data management). ANSLAB also facilitates the analysis of long-term recordings from ambulatory assessment studies. The present article reviews several analysis modules included in ANSLAB and describes how these address some of the current needs and methodological challenges of psychophysiological science.
Heart Rate Monitoring as an Easy Way to Increase Engagement in Human-Agent Interaction

Abstract:Physiological sensors are gaining the attention of manufacturers and users. As denoted by devices such as smartwatches or the newly released Kinect 2 -- which can covertly measure heartbeats -- or by the popularity of smartphone apps that track heart rate during fitness activities. Soon, physiological monitoring could become widely accessible and transparent to users. We demonstrate how one could take advantage of this situation to increase users' engagement and enhance user experience in human-agent interaction. We created an experimental protocol involving embodied agents -- "virtual avatars". Those agents were displayed alongside a beating heart. We compared a condition in which this feedback was simply duplicating the heart rates of users to another condition in which it was set to an average heart rate. Results suggest a superior social presence of agents when they display feedback similar to users' internal state. This physiological "similarity-attraction" effect may lead, with little effort, to a better acceptance of agents and robots by the general public.

Personalized acute stress classification from physiological signals with neural processes

Abstract:Objective: A person's affective state has known relationships to physiological processes which can be measured by wearable sensors. However, while there are general trends those relationships can be person-specific. This work proposes using neural processes as a way to address individual differences. Methods: Stress classifiers built from classic machine learning models and from neural processes are compared on two datasets using leave-one-participant-out cross-validation. The neural processes models are contextualized on data from a brief period of a particular person's recording. Results: The neural processes models outperformed the standard machine learning models, and had the best performance when using periods of stress and baseline as context. Contextual points chosen from other participants led to lower performance. Conclusion: Neural processes can learn to adapt to person-specific physiological sensor data. There are a wide range of affective and medical applications for which this model could prove useful.

Abstract:Measuring emotions is a real challenge for fundamental and applied research, especially in ecological contexts. de Wijk and Noldus propose combining two types of measures-explicit to characterize a specific food, and implicit-physiological-to capture the whole experience of a meal in real-life situations. This raises several challenges including development of new and miniaturized sensors and devices but also developing new ways of data analysis. We suggest a path to follow for future studies regarding data analysis: to include Data Science in the game. This field of research may enable developing predictive but also explicative models that link subjective experience of emotions and physiological responses in real-life contexts. We suggest that food scientists should go out of their comfort zone by collaborating with computer scientists and then be trained with the new tools of Data Science, which will undoubtedly enable them 1/ to better manage complex and heterogeneous data sets, 2/ to extract knowledge that will be essential to this field of research.

Abstract:Student engagement plays a vital role in academic success with high engagement often linked to positive educational outcomes. Traditionally, student engagement is measured through self-reports, which are both labour-intensive and not real-time. An emerging alternative is monitoring physiological signals such as Electrodermal Activity (EDA) and Inter-Beat Interval (IBI), which reflect students' emotional and cognitive states. In this research, we analyzed these signals from 23 students wearing Empatica E4 devices in real-world scenarios. Diverging from previous studies focused on lab settings or specific subjects, we examined physiological synchrony at the intra-student level across various courses. We also assessed how different courses influence physiological responses and identified consistent temporal patterns. Our findings show unique physiological response patterns among students, enhancing our understanding of student engagement dynamics. This opens up possibilities for tailoring educational strategies based on unobtrusive sensing data to optimize learning outcomes.

What Does Large-scale Electrodermal Sensing Reveal?

Abstract:Electrodermal activity (EDA) is a physiological measure that is used to index sympathetic arousal in response to stressors and other perturbations. However, EDA is underutilized in real-world, population-level research and clinical practice because of a paucity of remote measurement capabilities on commodity devices. The current study examined the capabilities of continuous remote measurement of EDA at scale to quantify physiological changes in the context of diurnal and circadian rhythms, demographic differences, high arousal contexts such as public holidays and high arousal moments (e.g., the Super Bowl). We first demonstrated the accuracy of a novel EDA sensor developed for the Fitbit Sense 2 wearable device within a controlled, arousal-inducing experiment. We then retrospectively analyzed 10 million hours of continuous EDA data collected from over 16,000 people. We show that continuously sampled EDA from Sense 2 has similar population-level diurnal patterns as those established from more tightly controlled in-lab experiments. Following this, variation of SCL across day of the week and season are presented. Finally, EDA dynamics occurring in response to commonly held stressful or exciting events such as Thanksgiving and the Super Bowl are described which we interpret as a natural experiment eliciting autonomic arousal.

Abstract:Many factors influence well-being and health in everyday life. While people are aware of traffic delays or continuous work stress, other factors influence the state of the body on a subconscious level. The built environment subconsciously influences human physiology during every second of life, which has a cumulative long-term effect. The idea of biophilic design identifies the importance of natural elements implemented in architectural structures to improve the occupants' health and well-being. This paper measures the impact of biophilic design on positive emotions and productivity in two separate but conceptually related pilot studies that apply novel approaches: (a) facial emotion recognition (FER) with residual masking networks and (b) sentiment detection using Large Language Models. The first study measures the emotions of people when confronted with images of different kinds of architecture, via FER and via a user survey. We find clear trends for emotions detected by FER and significant evidence for self-stated emotions that architecture implementing biophilic design evokes more positive emotions. The second study measures the influence of natural elements on productivity and team engagement. The findings show that natural elements in the surroundings do influence productivity and sentiment positively. As the sample size of subjects, especially for the second study, was relatively small, future research will need to apply these ideas in a larger setup to acquire further evidence for the importance of biophilic design for human well-being and health.

Emotion Measurements Through the Touch of Materials Surfaces

Abstract:The emotion generated by the touch of materials is studied via a protocol based on blind assessment of various stimuli. The human emotional reaction felt toward a material is estimated through (i) explicit measurements, using a questionnaire collecting valence and intensity, and (ii) implicit measurements of the activity of the autonomic nervous system, via a pupillometry equipment. A panel of 25 university students (13 women, 12 men), aged from 18 to 27, tested blind twelve materials such as polymers, sandpapers, wood, velvet and fur, randomly ordered. After measuring the initial pupil diameter, taken as a reference, its variation during the tactile exploration was recorded. After each touch, the participants were asked to quantify the emotional value of the material. The results show that the pupil size variation follows the emotional intensity. It is significantly larger during the touch of materials considered as pleasant or unpleasant, than with the touch of neutral materials. Moreover, after a time period of about 0.5 s following the stimulus, the results reveal significant differences between pleasant and unpleasant stimuli, as well as differences according to gender, i.e., higher pupil dilatation of women than men. These results suggest (i) that the autonomic nervous system is initially sensitive to high arousing stimulation, and (ii) that, after a certain period, the pupil size changes according to the cognitive interest induced and the emotional regulation adopted. This research shows the interest of the emotional characterization of materials for product design.

Abstract:Thermal imaging-based physiological and affective computing is an emerging research area enabling technologies to monitor our bodily functions and understand psychological and affective needs in a contactless manner. However, up to recently, research has been mainly carried out in very controlled lab settings. As small size and even low-cost versions of thermal video cameras have started to appear on the market, mobile thermal imaging is opening its door to ubiquitous and real-world applications. Here we review the literature on the use of thermal imaging to track changes in physiological cues relevant to affective computing and the technological requirements set so far. In doing so, we aim to establish computational and methodological pipelines from thermal images of the human skin to affective states and outline the research opportunities and challenges to be tackled to make ubiquitous real-life thermal imaging-based affect monitoring a possibility.

Abstract:Research in emotion recognition is important in many domains, from industrial ergonomics and health diagnostics to neuromarketing and affective computing. Emotion recognition from facial expression can be performed using image processing of face photos or using directly attached sensors reading the physiological signals from the muscular system governing the facial expression. We describe our experiments with the recognition of affectively induced facial expressions using non-intrusive on-body electromyography (EMG) sensors from the MySignals biosignal acquisition platform. For induction of the affective reaction, we use three different visual stimuli (movie clips) aimed to induce neutral, positive, and negative reactions. The results from 14 subjects show that 97.6% accuracy of emotion recognition was achieved using the covariance matrix features and K-nearest neighbor (KNN) classifier.
Decoding Emotional Experience through Physiological Signal Processing

Abstract:There is an increasing consensus among re- searchers that making a computer emotionally intelligent with the ability to decode human affective states would allow a more meaningful and natural way of human-computer interactions (HCIs). One unobtrusive and non-invasive way of recognizing human affective states entails the exploration of how physiological signals vary under different emotional experiences. In particular, this paper explores the correlation between autonomically-mediated changes in multimodal body signals and discrete emotional states. In order to fully exploit the information in each modality, we have provided an innovative classification approach for three specific physiological signals including Electromyogram (EMG), Blood Volume Pressure (BVP) and Galvanic Skin Response (GSR). These signals are analyzed as inputs to an emotion recognition paradigm based on fusion of a series of weak learners. Our proposed classification approach showed 88.1% recognition accuracy, which outperformed the conventional Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier with 17% accuracy improvement. Furthermore, in order to avoid information redundancy and the resultant over-fitting, a feature reduction method is proposed based on a correlation analysis to optimize the number of features required for training and validating each weak learner. Results showed that despite the feature space dimensionality reduction from 27 to 18 features, our methodology preserved the recognition accuracy of about 85.0%. This reduction in complexity will get us one step closer towards embedding this human emotion encoder in the wireless and wearable HCI platforms.
