Holographic videos of red, green, and blue colors at a refresh rate of 60 Hz are realized. Abstract:In this paper the research of the real-time three-dimensional holographic imaging system which uses liquid crystal panels to display the computer generated Fresnel holograms for reconstructed 3D images is described. The reconstructed effects are related to each step of the process and the characteristics of the devices. The contradictions between the quantization of holographic numerical data and the properties of the display device are the important reasons for the reconstruction errors. A new algorithm for calculating point holograms is proposed for reducing the reconstruction errors. Finally the original experimental result is given.

Abstract:A new algorithm for calculating computer-generated holograms (CGH's) is proposed. The hologram fringe pattern data is stored in the computer image format, and transmitted to a transmission-type liquid crystal panel by the video signal. It will be used for the real-time three-dimension imaging by holographic reconstruction. Questions of the effect of the solution, the contrast ratio of the liquid crystal panel and the modulation due to the gray-level of the hologram image are addressed. Therefore the distribution of the amplitude and phase on the holographic plane is determinated by confirming image plane distribution considering the above effects. The reconstructed data is made as similar as possible to the source data by the optimal code. Experimental results,and value the quality of the reconstructed image are given.

Abstract:The reproduction of computer-generated hologram (CGH) with white light source was realized using a liquid crystal panel instead of holographic film. The Burch-coding CGH was achieved by simulating the interference of a digital image and virtual reference light, displayed on liquid crystal displays and illuminated by a white light-emitting diode. The system is compact and the reconstructed images include full parallax. The full-parallax images of the Fresnel hologram computed with our algorithm were compared with the reproduced images by the rainbow hologram. The results implied this method was ready for the development of real-time three-dimensional color digital holography. (C) 2007 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a dynamic holographic display in a quantum dot (ZnS/InP) doped liquid crystal device, where one of the interior cell surfaces is covered by a ZnSe layer. Such a hybrid device shows substantially improved photorefractive sensitivity of 2.2 cm3/J, which is almost 300 times larger than that in ZnS/InP doped liquid crystal device without the ZnSe layer. The holographic grating can form at intensities as low as ~0.8 mW/cm2, and exhibit a fast optical response of several to tens of milliseconds. Exploiting the superior performances of photosensitivity and fast response of this device, we obtain dynamic holographic videos of red, green, and blue colors, as well as a reconstructed image of high gray-scale fidelity.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a dynamic direct-writing optical holographic display system based on quantum-dot-doped liquid crystal (QDDLC). Instead of using two-beam interference to generate the desired holographic patterns, computer-generated hologram was directly generated by a spatial light modulator (SLM) and projected to the QDDLC sample. Employing only one recording beam, the proposed system greatly simplifies the optical system complexity and eliminates the influence of environmental disturbance. We investigate the factors that affect the diffraction efficiency and response time of the QDDLC in the direct-writing system and implement a dynamic holographic 3D display refreshed at 30 Hz.

Abstract:Liquid crystals (LCs) doped with photo-sensitive materials exhibit large optical nonlinearity, which makes them attractive for holographic display. In this paper, we present a 3D holographic display based on a nematic LC doped with quantum dots (QDs). With this QD-doped LC, a fast response time of 8.46 ms is achieved. Using this fast-updated recording material, a video-rate 3D holographic display system is implemented, which provides vivid RGB colours and high brightness, and offers all depth cues correctly. In combination with optical multiplexing techniques, the presented system is capable of realising large-sized holographic display. [GRAPHICS] .

Abstract:Holographic display has attracted considerable attention for its high-contrast, low power consumption, wide color gamut and potentials for three-dimensional (3D) display. Although computer-generated hologram (CGH) has the potential for reconstructing all the 3D information of an object, complicated 3D modeling and time-consuming computation are big challenges faced by current 3D holographic display. A simple yet effective method to realize holographic 3D display by shifted Fraunhofer diffraction has been presented in this paper. After a 3D object is divided into a set of layers in axial direction, these layers are calculated into corresponding sub-holograms by Fraunhofer diffraction. The hologram uploaded on SLM consists of sub-holograms in a tiling approach. Both simulations and experiments are carried out to verify the feasibility of shifted Fraunhofer diffraction. Detailed analysis of computational cost has also been carried out, and the comparison between shifted Fresnel diffraction and shifted Fraunhofer diffraction in the proposed method has been analyzed. The Analysis results shows that the process of 3D modeling is simple, that is the computational complexity is accordingly reduced compared with shifted Fraunhofer diffraction. The experimental results demonstrate that our method can reconstruct multi-plane 3D object with continuous depth map. It is expected that the proposed method may provide a better solution in future holographic 3D display research.

Abstract:Holographic display, which can completely reconstruct phase and amplitude information, is considered as an ideal true three‐dimensional display technology. In this work, liquid crystal doped with perovskite (CsPbBr3) works as the photorefractive material and forms diffraction grating under the interference light beams. The dependences of diffraction efficiency and response time on doping concentration, recording beam power and applied voltage are investigated. A maximum first‐order diffraction efficiency of 18% has been achieved under a low electric field intensity of ~0.5 V/μm and the shortest grating build up time is as low as 5.5 ms. The system can realize a real‐time dynamic display with 60 Hz refresh rate.

Abstract:A video-rate optical holographic display is achieved by using an azo-dye-doped liquid crystal as the passive, updatable recording material. The response time of this material is measured in the order of several to tens of milliseconds, depending on recording beam intensities, polarization directions, and polarization states. A holographic video at a refresh rate of 25 Hz, sourced from a spatial light modulator, is demonstrated in the experiments.

Abstract:We study nonlinear performances of doped liquid crystals employing azo dye (DR1) and quantum dots. The nonlinear mechanisms include thermal effect, space-charge induced electric field, photo-isomerization, and optical-field induced molecular polarization. Our preliminary investigations reveal that these doped liquid crystals are dominated by different nonlinear mechanisms. In particular, we find that For dye-doped LC, the response time is generally robust to temperature variation but the diffraction efficiency is temperature-sensitive. Whereas, the QD-doped LC remains robust for both characteristics around room temperature. We also demonstrate dynamic holographic displays using these doped liquid crystals at a video rate of 60 Hz.

Abstract:In this paper, we studied the holographic properties of liquid crystal (LC) thin film doped with carbon dots (CDs) which can be used as real-time holographic display screen. The maximum value of diffraction efficiency can reach up to 30% by using a low applied electric field 0.2 V/mu m. Holograms in the LC film can be dynamically formed and self-erased. The hologram build-up time and the hologram self-erasure time in the material is fast enough to realize video refresh rate. In addition, the forming process of hologram was studied. The holographic diffraction efficiency was measured depending on the intensity of recording light, applied electric field, the intensity of readout light, and readout light polarization direction. Triple enhancement of the diffraction efficiency value by the modulation of voltage under the condition of low recording energy is presented. Therefore, we develop an easy way to obtain real-time dynamic holographic red, green and blue displays with high diffraction efficiency, which allow the LC film doped with CDs to be used as a holographic 3D display screen.

Abstract:Holography can produce the most real three-dimensional (3D) image, and is considered as the ultimate 3D display technology. However, compared with other display technologies, it has not been practically available in video display so far due to low refresh rate. To realize dynamic holographic display, photosensitive material doped liquid crystal (LC) has been discovered and deeply investigated because of superior photorefractive and photoelectric properties. In this work, we present a dynamic holographic display using LC film doped with perovskite (CsPbBr3) nanocrystal (NC) as the photorefractive material. The dependence of diffraction efficiency and response time on doping concentration, recording beam power and applied voltage are investigated. A maximum diffraction efficiency of 18% has been achieved under a low electric field intensity of 0.45 V/μm and the shortest build-up time of grating is 5.5 ms. The system can realize a video display with 60 Hz refresh rate in red, green and blue colors, which demonstrates the feasibility of applying perovskite NC doped LC film in dynamic holographic display.

Abstract:Liquid crystals (LCs) are widely used in nonlinear optics because of their sensitive responses to optical stimulation. Combined with other optoelectronic materials such as azo dyes, quantum dots (QDs), etc., LCs show very large optical nonlinearity which makes them suitable for applications in optical information processing, including holographic display and holographic storage. In this review, we present an overview of recent efforts on holographic display and storage based on liquid crystalline materials. Emphasis is placed on the dynamic holographic display which uses fast-response LCs doped with azo dye and QD. In this application, we discuss how to improve the response speed, resolution, and diffraction efficiency of liquid crystalline materials to realize high frame rate, large-size and high-brightness holographic displays. Some LC materials for holographic storage are also introduced, including polymer-dispersed liquid crystals, blue-phase liquid crystals, and azobenzene polymer liquid crystals, which have permanent response to light stimulation. The mechanisms of optical nonlinearities are discussed in detail, as a foundation for the physical process of LC-based holographic display and storage.
