Abstract:Optical lattices have several applications including super-resolution imaging, lithography, and light-tweezers. Compared with the conventional multibeam interference method, optical lattices in a tightly focused light fields are presented by cylindrical vector polarization illumination and multisector amplitude modulation. The polarization and phase difference of the illumination beam, including the size and relative position of the sectors, were analyzed using the vector diffraction theory. The obtained results indicate that the primitive cell shape of optical lattices can be controlled by the polarization direction of the illumination beam when the relative positions of sectors in the amplitude modulation mask are set. In addition, the period and primitive cell shape of optical lattices with hyper or complex constructions can be controlled by the relative positions of sectors, while the optical lattice zone primarily depends on the sector size. By combining polarization and amplitude modulation in a high numerical aperture optical system, these engineered optical lattices are potentially beneficial in expanding their applications.

Abstract:An aperiodic optical superlattice is designed. The designing method is universal and can be applied to all frequency conversion processes by using the coupling of quasiphase matching, without any limitations to special materials and to given fundamental wavelengths.

Abstract:We present a commensurable dual-periodic optical superlattice (CDPSL) to produce a device with multiple phase-matching wavelengths. Characters of the CDPSL are studied theoretically. It is not sensitive to fabrication errors and can provide a high-quality structure. Experimentally highly efficient multiple parametric lights are obtained. The efficiency of total parametric output power over pump power is 28.1%. The scheme is an attractive way to construct multi-wavelength laser source.

Abstract:Optical limiting is an essential concept for nonlinear optics and its applications. Recently, the nonlinear response in a two-dimensional (2D) superlattice (a periodic structure with its refractive index modulated in two dimensions) was studied for its potential applications in new optical devices. The available results are only related to the transition between a low transmission state and a high transmission state in the allowed bands. Up to date, optical limiting is not explored in 2D case with one incident wave. In this paper, a novel structure, which is composed of two dissimilar superlattices, is proposed for the optical limiting. The novel structure is named hetero-superlattice-junction structure in this paper. In terms of real-space-matching concept, optical limiting is demonstrated in a 2D nonlinear hetero-superlattice-junction structure, while this phenomena is proved unavailable in a 2D nonlinear superlattice.

Abstract:We report on a theoretical analysis for the narrowband multiple wavelengths filter in aperiodic optical superlattice (AOS). The sequences of the opposite domains in AOS are optimized to realize the prescribed multiple wavelengths filtering using simulated annealing (SA) algorithm. Two, three and four wavelengths narrowband filters at telecommunication wavelength (near 1550 nm) are presented. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the filtering spectrum is about 0.5 nm. The influences of domain errors, as well as the working temperature, on the performance of the filters are also studied.

Abstract:We present a kind of aperiodic structure for the generation of multiple-wavelength second harmonic in a quasi-phase-matching scheme. In order to confirm its efficiency, a LiTaO3 superlattice with such an aperiodic domain-inverted structure was designed and fabricated. The second-harmonic generation at four present wavelengths was experimentally demonstrated from the superlattice with high and nearly equal conversion efficiencies. The tested result is in good agreement with theoretical consideration. The method may be used for the design of optical superlattices to construct multiple-wavelength lasers and wavelength converters for all-optical network.

Abstract:Electro-optic (EO) effect of optical superlattice LiNbO3 (OSLLN), a single crystal with periodic ferroelectric domain structure was studied theoretically and experimentally. Because the electro-optic coefficient has different signs in different domains, the refractive index ellipsoid deforms periodically in the presence of an electric field applied along the Y-axis, which results in the coupling between the extraordinary wave and ordinary wave. Under specific conditions, the polarization of a light may be rotated to 90degrees, which means that the optical material could act as a precise spectral filter. The influence on the transmission spectrum of an OSLLN EO filter when there is another electric field along the Z-direction was also studied. It was demonstrated that the transmission peak could move with the electric field along the Z-axis if the duty cycle of the periodic structure is not 50%. Based on this effect, a tunable filter may be constructed.

Abstract:Dielectric superlattice has artificial microstructures in micrometer span. Cascade quasi-phase-matched frequency conversion could be realized in certain specially-designed superlattices. Efficient red-green-blue lights thus were obtained simultaneously, which may be used in laser display. On the other hand, light filtering and modulation also could be achieved though acousto-optic effect by using a dielectric superlattice.

Abstract:Ferroelectric crystals with periodic and quasi-periodic domain structures, such as LiNbO/sub 3/, LiTaO/sub 3/, Sr/sub 0.6/Ba/sub 0.4/Nb/sub 2/O/sub 6/ and KTiOPO/sub 4/ optical superlattice crystals, have attracted great interest because of their promising properties for quasi-phase-matched (QPM) frequency conversion. Periodic or quasi-periodic reversal of the crystal domains compensates for a mismatch between the propagation speeds of the pump light and generated light along a particular crystallographic direction. This allows phase matching to be achieved for the highest nonlinear coefficients in a particular material. Second harmonic generation (SHG), third harmonic generation (THG) and optical parametric generation (OPG) experiments performed with these superlattices have produced wavelengths throughout visible and infrared spectra with CW and nanosecond, picosecond, femtosecond pulse duration in high conversion efficiencies. To meet the needs of various applications, the design and fabrication of these superlattices become the one of the focus of the research.

Abstract:We demonstrate an electro-optic Solc-type wavelength filter in periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN). Solc-type transmission spectrum is observed experimentally in a PPLN with four periods from 20.2 mu m to 20.8 mu m. Modulation of transmission power of the filter can be realized by applying electric fields along Y-axis of PPLN. It is observed that the wavelength can also be tuned by temperature. Furthermore, we report on a theoretical analysis for the narrowband multiple-wavelength filter in aperiodic optical superlattice (AOS). Abstract:We investigate wavelength conversions based on chirped optical superlattices, such as linearly chirped and sinusoidally chirped optical superlattices, through cascaded second-order nonlinear processes for wavelength division multiplexing application. They are compared with periodic optical superlattices in terms of bandwidth, efficiency and response flatness. The sinusoidally chirped optical superlattice shows more excellent overall performance than the periodic and linearly chirped optical superlattices.

Abstract:The propagation and interaction of light in the two-dimensional optical superlattice, a two-dimensional periodically modulated medium, were investigated by the dynamical theory with the four-wave approximation, which is based on an incident beam that satisfies Bragg conditions in two orthogonal directions. The excited fields and the intensities of exiting waves in the two-dimensional optical superlattice were calculated. The relation between relative intensities of the exiting waves and angular deviation of the incident beam as well as the index-modulated parameters of the superlattice was obtained. Also discussed are possible applications of the superlattices in optical communications.

Abstract:The domain-inverted ferroelectric materials, or simply the dielectric superlattice, can be patterned into different configurations. For example, there are the periodic, quasiperiodic, Thue-Morse and several other types. The periodic superlattice is widely used for the second-harmonic generation, sum-frequency generation and optical parametric oscillation, for which only one optical parametric process is involved. The two-components quasiperiodic superlattice has been proved useful to some coupled parametric processes such as the direct third-harmonic generation. In this paper a three-component quasiperiodic superlattice has been discussed theoretically. Using the projection method, the analytical expression of its Fourier spectrum has been derived. Relations with the periodic and two-components quasiperiodic superlattices has been given. The results might be useful to the design of nonlinear optical devices related to the coupled parametric processes.

Abstract:A new type of Fibonacci optical superlattice is analysed. Its electro-optic effect is studied. The phase-matching concept is proposed for the first time for the Fibonacci optical superlattice. The transmission spectrum is non-self-similar owing to the dispersive effect of the refractive index. An extinction phenomenon exists provided that the thicknesses of the domains are properly selected.

Abstract:The electro-optic effect of periodically poled optical superlattice LiNbO3 (PPLN) was studied. Because of the periodic electro-optic (EO) coefficient, the reciprocal vector of the periodic structure can be used to compensate for the phase mismatch between the ordinary and extraordinary waves, which is similar to the nonlinear optical frequency conversion process. If the quasi-phase-matching condition is satisfied, polarization of a light propagated in PPLN can rotate linearly with the applied electric field, which shows that PPLN may be used as a precise spectral filter or an EO switch.

Abstract:The remarkable acousto-optical properties of superlattices for light wavelength near the condition of the Bragg reflection at the interfaces are reported here for the first time. Because of the assistance of a reciprocal lattice vector in the phase-matching condition, the collinear coupling between the light and ultrasonic waves becomes possible in the superlattice. At the same time, the diffraction efficiency is strongly increased by an optical resonance effect in the superlattice. Acousto-optical devices based on semiconductor superlattice structures are proposed, which can be very efficient, rapid, and compact.

Abstract:We report on a theoretical demonstration of optical bistability in periodic layered media, particularly in long-period GaAs-AlAs superlattices. The proposed structure consists of a periodic multilayer system, as opposed to previously demonstrated nonlinear bistable devices which employed Fabry-Perot etalons. The optical resonance effect which is essential for bistable devices is, in our case, induced by a refractive index modulation. The nonlinear active medium is distributed in the whole structure rather than placed between the two mirrors of a Fabry-Perot cavity. It is shown by a complete calculation of wave propagation in the periodic nonlinear medium that a multiple valued feature appears in the structure's nonlinear reflectivity spectrum. The input/output characteristics of the structure exhibit bistable hysteresis similar to that of a nonlinear Fabry-Perot etalon. Both the reflection and the transmission modes are analyzed. The intensity threshold for bistability is shown to be as low as 9 kW/cm2 for a 30-period GaAs-AlAs superlattice of a thickness of about 4-mu-m. The characteristics of this type of device are discussed and compared to those based on Fabry-Perot etalons.

Abstract:In this paper, the light transmission spectra of quasi-periodic and periodic sub-wavelength slit arrays are studied. The results show that the spectral shape and transmission efficiency depend on the reciprocal vectors as well as the Fourier coefficients. The analysis suggests that the transmission minimum can be attributed to the surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) whereas the transmission maximum is associated with the Fabry–Perot-like resonance.

Abstract:The quasi-periodic optical superlattice is a promising material for use in optical frequency conversion. We propose a method for designing a quasi-periodic structure for efficient third-harmonic generation (THG) at any given wavelength. With this method we have made a LiTaO(3) sample in which 27% THG at 0.48microm was achieved, together with a series of highly efficient multiwavelength second-harmonic generation outputs. The result is in good agreement with the theoretical prediction.

Abstract:Dielectric superlattices show a lot of new phenomena that are promising in applications, such as nonlinear optical frequency conversion and optical bistability. This paper reviews the main achievements in this field. Much has been focused on the work done in our Lab. Since 1980, we have extended the concept of superlattice from semiconductor to dielectrics. When quasi-phase-matching technique is introduced into a quasiperiodic dielectric superlattice, more interesting phenomena can occur. For example, multiwavelength second-harmonic generation and coupled parametric processes such as direct third-harmonic generation have been realized with high efficiency. A new mechanism for optical bistability in a 2-dimensional dielectric superlattice, i.e. a 2-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal, has been proposed theoretically had proved experimentally.
