Abstract:We investigate the threshold-enhanced QCD corrections to the cross sections for direct top quark productions induced by model-independent flavor changing neutral current couplings at hadron colliders. We use the soft-collinear effective theory to describe the incoming massless partons and use the heavy quark effective theory to treat the top quark. Then we construct the flavor changing operator based on the above effective theories, and resum the large logarithms near threshold arising from soft gluon emission. Our results show that the resummed QCD corrections further enhance the next-to-leading order cross sections significantly. Moreover, the resummation effects vastly reduce the dependence of the cross sections on the renormalization and factorization scales, especially in cases where the next-to-leading order results behave worse than the leading order results. Our results are more sensitive to the new physics effects. If signals of direct top quark production are found in future experiments, it is more appropriate to use our results as the theoretical inputs for extracting the anomalous couplings.

Abstract:We calculate the soft-gluon corrections for tW production to all orders. The soft limit is defined in the pair invariant mass or one particle inclusive kinematic schemes. We find that at NLO the contribution of the soft-gluon effect dominates in the total cross section or the differential distributions. After resumming the soft-gluon effect to all orders using the renormalization group equation, we find that the NLO+NNLL results increase the NLO cross sections by 12% ∼ 17% depending on the scheme and the collider energy. Our results are in agreement with the measurements at the 8 and 13 TeV LHC. We also provide predictions for the total cross section at the 14 TeV LHC.

Abstract:If supersymmetry near the TeV scale is realized in Nature, the pair production of scalar top squarks is expected to be observable at the Large Hadron Collider. Recently, effective field-theory methods were employed to obtain approximate predictions for the cross section for this process, which include soft-gluon emission effects up to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbation theory. In this work we employ the same techniques to resum soft-gluon emission effects to all orders in perturbation theory and with next-to-next-to-logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy. We analyze the effects of NNLL resummation on the stop-pair production cross section by obtaining NLO + NNLL predictions in pair invariant mass and one-particle inclusive kinematics. We compare the results of these calculations to the approximate NNLO predictions for the cross sections.

We illustrate the similarities and critical differences between this process and the tt production process. This fact, however, is not expected to hold at higher powers. Based on the factorization formula, we perform the resummation at the improved next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, and match to the next-to-leading order result. This allows us to give NLL′+NLO predictions for the total cross sections at the LHC. We find that the resummation effects enhance the NLO cross sections by about 6

Abstract:We present state of the art resummation predictions for differential cross sections in top-quark pair production at the LHC. They are derived from a formalism which allows the simultaneous resummation of both soft and small-mass logarithms, which endanger the convergence of fixed-order perturbative series in the boosted regime, where the partonic center-of-mass energy is much larger than the mass to the top quark. We combine such a double resummation at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic' (NNLL') accuracy with standard soft-gluon resummation at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy and with next-to-leading-order calculations, so that our results are applicable throughout the whole phase space. We find that the resummation effects on the differential distributions are significant, bringing theoretical predictions into better agreement with experimental data compared to fixed-order calculations. Moreover, such effects are not well described by the next-to-next-to-leading-order approximation of the resummation formula, especially in the high-energy tails of the distributions, highlighting the importance of all-orders resummation in dedicated studies of boosted top production.

Abstract:We perform the threshold resummation for ${W}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}Z$ and $ZZ$ pair production at the next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy in soft-collinear effective theory at the LHC. Our results show that the resummation effects increase the total cross sections by about 7% for $ZZ$ production and 12% for ${W}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}Z$ production with $\sqrt{S}=7$, 8, 13 and 14 TeV, respectively, and the scale uncertainties are significantly reduced. Besides, our numerical results are consistent with experimental data reported by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations.

Abstract:The production of a pair of on-shell $Z$-bosons is an important process at the Large Hadron Collider. Owing to its large production cross section at the LHC, this process is very useful for SM precision studies, electroweak symmetry breaking sector as well as to unravel the possible new physics. In this work, we have performed the threshold resummation of the large logarithms that arise in the partonic threshold limit $z \to 1$, up to Next-to-Next-to-Leading Logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy. The presence of the two-loop contributions in the process dependent resummation coefficient $g_0$ makes the numerical computation a non-trivial task. After matching the resummed predictions to the Next-to-Next-to-Leading order (NNLO) fixed order results, we present the invariant mass distribution to NNLO+NNLL accuracy in QCD for the current LHC energies. We find that in the high invariant mass region ($Q=1$ TeV), while the NNLO corrections are as large as $83\%$ with respect to the leading order, the NNLL contribution enhances the cross section by additional few percent, about $4\%$ for $13.6$ TeV LHC. In this invariant mass region, the conventional scale uncertainties in the fixed order results get reduced from $3.4\%$ at NNLO to about $2.6\%$ at NNLO+NNLL, and this reduction is expected to be more for higher $Q$ values.

Abstract:Precision predictions for phenomenologically interesting observables such as the $ t\bar{t} $ invariant mass distribution and forward-backward asymmetry in top-quark pair production at hadron colliders require control over the differential cross section in perturbative QCD. In this paper we improve existing calculations of the doubly differential cross section in the invariant mass and scattering angle by using techniques from soft-collinear effective theory to perform an NNLL resummation of threshold logarithms, which become large when the invariant mass M of the top-quark pair approaches the partonic center-of-mass energy $ \sqrt {{\hat{s}}} $. We also derive an approximate formula for the differential cross section at NNLO in fixed-order perturbation theory, which completely determines the coefficients multiplying the singular plus distributions in the variable $ \left( {1 - {{{{M^2}}} \left/ {{\hat{s}}} \right.}} \right) $. We then match our results in the threshold region with the exact results at NLO in fixed-order perturbation theory, and perform a numerical analysis of the invariant mass distribution, the total cross section, and the forward-backward asymmetry. We argue that these are the most accurate predictions available for these observables at present. Using MSTW2008NNLO parton distribution functions (PDFs) along with α s (M Z ) = 0.117 and m t = 173.1 GeV, we obtain for the inclusive production cross sections at the Tevatron and LHC the values $ {{{\sigma }}_{\text{Tevatron}}} = \left( {6.30\pm 0.19_{ - 0.23}^{ + 0.31}} \right){\text{pb}} $ and σ LHC = (149 ± 7 ± 8) pb, where the first error results from scale variations while the second reflects PDF uncertainties.

Abstract:We study the single hadron inclusive production in the forward rapidity region in proton-nucleus collisions. We find the longstanding negative cross section at next-to-leading-order (NLO) is driven by the large negative threshold logarithmic contributions. We established a factorization theorem for resumming these logarithms with systematically improvable accuracy within the color glass condensate formalism. We demonstrate how the threshold leading logarithmic accuracy can be realized by a suitable scale choice in the NLO results. The NLO spectrums with the threshold logarithms resummed remain positive and impressive agreements with experimental data are observed.

Abstract:In this talk we summarize two recent efforts towards improving the theoretical predictions for the differential cross sections in top quark pair production. Both are related to the effect of soft gluons. The first result is the analytic calculation of the NNLO massive soft function which is an important ingredient in the resummation of threshold logarithms. The second is the matched NNLO+NNLL$'$ predictions which combine state-of-the-art NNLO QCD calculations with double resummation at NNLL$'$ accuracy of threshold logarithms arising from soft gluon emissions and of small mass logarithms.

Invariant Mass Distribution of Top Quark Pairs Near Threshold

Abstract:We investigate the invariant mass distribution of top quark pairs near the $2m_t$ threshold, where current theoretical predictions are incompatible with experimental measurements at the LHC. We show that higher-order non-relativistic Coulomb corrections lead to large corrections, which cannot be incorporated at fixed orders due to the divergent behavior. We derive a factorization formula to resum such corrections to all orders in the strong coupling, and calculate necessary ingredients to perform the resummation at next-to-leading power. We combine the resummation with fixed-order results and present phenomenologically relevant numeric results. We find that the resummation effect significantly enhances the differential cross section in the threshold region, and makes the theoretical prediction more compatible with experimental data.

Abstract:We study the resummation of soft gluon emission corrections to the production of a top-antitop pair in association with a Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider. Starting from a soft-gluon resummation formula derived in previous work, we develop a bespoke parton-level Monte Carlo program which can be used to calculate the total cross section along with differential distributions. We use this tool to study the phenomenological impact of the resummation to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy, finding that these corrections increase the total cross section and the differential distributions with respect to NLO calculations of the same observables.

Abstract:In this talk we apply two factorisation theorems to top quark pair production at hadron colliders. The factorisation theorems allow for the resummation of threshold logarithms as well as the resummation of small-mass logarithms in the threshold limit. We combine these two resummed results performing a joint resummation and match to NNLO fixed order results yielding predictions for the pair invariant mass (PIM) and top quark $p_T$ distributions at NNLO+NNLL$'$ accuracy. In particular we find the resummed results for the PIM distributions are much more stable with respect to the parametric choice of factorisation scale.

Abstract:We develop a framework for a systematic resummation of the transverse momentum distribution of top-quark pairs produced at hadron colliders based on effective field theory. Compared to Drell-Yan and Higgs production, a novel soft function matrix is required to account for the soft gluon emissions from the final states. We calculate this soft function at the next-to-leading order, and perform the resummation at the next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We compare our results with parton shower programs and with the experimental data at the Tevatron and the LHC. We also discuss the implications for the top quark charge asymmetry.

Abstract:We construct predictions for top quark pair differential distributions at hadron colliders that combine state-of-the-art NNLO QCD calculations with double resummation at NNLL′ accuracy of threshold logarithms arising from soft gluon emissions and of small mass logarithms. This is the first time a resummed calculation at full NNLO+NNLL′ accuracy in QCD for a process with non-trivial color structure has been completed at the differential level. Of main interest to us is the stability of the $ {M}_{t\overline{t}} $ and top-quark pT distributions in the boosted regime where fixed order calculations may become strongly dependent on the choice of dynamic scales. With the help of numeric and analytic arguments we confirm that the choice for the factorization and renormalization scales advocated recently by some of the authors is indeed optimal. We further derive a set of optimized kinematics-dependent scales for the matching functions which appear in the resummed calculations. Our NNLO+NNLL′ prediction for the top-pair invariant mass is significantly less sensitive to the choice of factorization scale than the fixed order prediction, even at NNLO. Notably, the resummed and fixed order calculations are in nearly perfect agreement with each other in the full $ {M}_{t\overline{t}} $ range when the optimal dynamic scale is used. For the top-quark pT distribution the resummation performed here has less of an impact and instead we find that upgrading the matching with fixed-order from NLO+NNLL′ to NNLO+NNLL′ to be an important effect, a point to be kept in mind when using NLO-based Monte Carlo event generators to calculate this distribution.

Abstract:We present a fully differential next-to-next-to-leading order calculation of t-channel single top-quark production and decay at the LHC under narrow-width approximation and neglecting cross-talk between incoming protons. We focus on the fiducial cross sections at 13 TeV, finding that the next-to-next-to-leading order QCD corrections can reach the level of -6%. The scale variations are reduced to the level of a percent. Our results can be used to improve experimental acceptance estimates and the measurements of the single top-quark production cross section and the top-quark electroweak couplings.

Abstract:We present a detailed phenomenological study of the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections for t-channel single top (anti-)quark production and its semi-leptonic decay at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We find the NNLO corrections for the total inclusive rates at the LHC with different center of mass energies are generally smaller than the NLO corrections, indicative of improved convergence. However, they can be large for differential distributions, reaching a level of 10% or more in certain regions of the transverse momentum distributions of the top (anti-)quark and the pseudo-rapidity distributions of the leading jet in the event. In all cases the perturbative hard scale uncertainties are greatly reduced after the NNLO corrections are included. We also show a comparison of the normalized parton-level distributions to recent data from the 8 TeV measurement of the ATLAS Collaboration. The NNLO corrections tend to shift the theoretical predictions closer to the measured transverse momentum distribution of the top (anti)-quark. Importantly, for the LHC at 13 TeV, we present NNLO cross sections in a fiducial volume with decays of the top quark included.
