Res., 24: 33-43.By using atmospheric noise reception in the 5 mm-3 cm band, the atmospheric temperature-humidity profile, total water-vapour content and liquid-water content of cloud can be derived. A set of microwave radiometers operating in the 5 mm-3 cm band with 5 frequencies used in meteorology has been developed. The experimental results of remote sensing with 8-mm and 1.35-cm radiometers of total water-vapour content and liquid-water content, including the rain process, are presented and discussed in this note. The mean deviation between remote sensing of total water-vapour content in cloudy sky and data obtained by radiosonde is <7%. The measurement of rain intensity by a combination of a microwave radiometer and a radar system has been studied. The developed 3-cm radiometer was combined with a Chinese-built 3-cm radar to detect the distribution of rainfall. The mean deviation of rain intensity measured by the radar-radiometer in comparison with those obtained by raingauge is 25%.

Abstract:The uncertainty of water cloud feedback on radiative forcing is one of the largest obstacles to producing confident projections of the global climate. Sufficient measurements of water clouds are crucial to addressing this issue. However, existing techniques based on remote sensing or in-situ instruments face limitations in data capacity attributed to the short lifetime, high temporal variability, and complex vertical structure of water clouds. In this study, taking advantage of a dual-field-of-view (dual-FOV) high-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL), we developed a novel algorithm to obtain diurnal simultaneous profiles of water cloud optical and microphysical properties with high temporal-spatial resolution. This technique does not rely on the widely-used subadiabatic assumption about the vertical structure of water clouds. The retrieval algorithm, validated by simulations and cloud radar measurements, was applied to field experiment data collected at the Beijing and Hangzhou sites in China. The relationship functions between water cloud properties are presented to enhance our understanding of the underlying processes. Furthermore, the vertical distributions of retrieved properties are compared to the subadiabatic assumption. The dual-FOV HSRL technique enables comprehensive observations, enhancing our understanding of water clouds and providing significant insights into the interactions among clouds, aerosols, precipitation, and radiation.

Abstract:In this paper, the principle and test of remote sensing of atmospheric property and weather process with 5 mm (52.9 Ghz, 54.5 GHz), 1.35 cm (22.235 GHz) and 8 mm (35,3 GHz) radiometers are described. The assessment of the ability of remote sensing of atmospheric temperature, humidity, liquid water content of cloud in all weather (except rain) has been discussed. The efficiency of remote sensing of the atmospheric sounding has been proved by the field experiment. The field experiment results show that it could meet the need of atmospheric sounding in clear and cloudy weather. To monitor the weather, such as the change of air mass, the process of precipitation and the disturbance of microscale and mesoscale weather, the signal reveals itself significantly in the atmospheric microwave radiation. The effect could be used in the nowcasting and artificial precipitation area.

Abstract:> In this paper, the principle and method of microwave remote sensing atmospheric sounding are described. In order to carry out the experimental study, the 4 channels in 5mm—1.35 cm band microwave radiometers have been constructed. The field experiment in September-October 1981 was carried out. In this paper, the results obtained by different inversion methods are compared with each other. The experimental result shows that it will be satisfactory, if the temperature profile and inversion of lower atmosphere are derived from remote sensing of 2 channels (frequencies: 52.8 Gc and 54.4. Gc) in 5 mm band. The atmospheric humidity can be obtained from the remote sensing of 1.35 cm band. While the change of air mass exists, signal reveals itself significantly in the atmospheric microwave radiation. The variations of atmospheric temperature and humidity have been analysed and compared with those obtained from radiosonde.

Abstract:Meteorological radars, as remote sensing instruments, play a vital role in observing clouds and precipitation. However, due to the complexity of hydrometeors in shape, density, diameter, orientation, and particle size distributions, accurate quantification of the inner microphysical characteristics of a cloud/precipitation system is challenging for a single-frequency radar. Recently, the advancement in scattering theory of hydrometeors, computer science, and hardware manufacturing (such as millimeter-wave devices) has stimulated the application of multi-frequency radars, bringing novel observations for an improved understanding of cloud and precipitation microphysics. Over the past few years, the multi-frequency vertical detection techniques have evolved from the new retrieval methods being enlightened by scattering theory to a new stage of the crucial microphysical processes being revealed by field observations. In this paper, from the perspectives of liquid and frozen hydrometeor microphysics, we introduce the key techniques used for dual- and triple-frequency radar retrieval techniques based on the scattering and attenuation of hydrometeors. Meanwhile, enlightened by the scattering of hydrometeors, we propose that the multi-frequency radar detecting techniques are developing from the classical W/Ka/X wavelengths to a "triple-frequency plus" stage, involving radars with shorter wavelengths and/or longer wavelengths. With spaceborne radars being developed from single-frequency to dual-frequency radars, the improvement of ground-based multi-frequency radars is expected to provide crucial support to future spaceborne multi-frequency radar missions.

Abstract:Highly accurate observations at various scales on the land surface are urgently needed for the studies of many areas, such as hydrology, meteorology, and agriculture. With the rapid development of remote sensing techniques, remote sensing has had the capacity of monitoring many factors of the Earth's land surface. Especially, the space-borne microwave remote sensing systems have been widely used in the quantitative monitoring of global snow, soil moisture, and vegetation parameters with their all-weather, all-time observation capabilities and their sensitivities to the characteristics of land surface factors. Based on the electromagnetic theories and microwave radiative transfer equations, researchers have achieved great successes in the microwave remote sensing studies for different sensors in recent years. This article has systematically reviewed the progresses on five research areas including microwave theoretical modeling, microwave inversion on soil moisture, snow, vegetation and land surface temperatures. Through the further enrichment of remote sensing datasets and the development of remote sensing theories and inversion techniques, remote sensing including microwave remote sensing will play a more important role in the studies and applications of the Earth systems.

Abstract:> A set of remote sensing instruments of Peking University, which includes mainly a dual-channel(22.235GHz and 35.5GHz) microwave radiometer, a 8mm microwave and a 5mm microwave radiometer, has been developed for the Western North-Pacific Cloud-Radiation Experiment (WENPEX). The instruments were used to observe the cloud and marine atmospheric boundary-layer in the southwest sea area of Japan in winter time from 1989 to 1991.In the weather change process, the characteristics of the marine atmospheric boundary-layer and liquid water content in cloud of this area in winter time are studied from observation data. A one-dimensional mixed layer model is presented for the growth and evolution of a cloud-topped marine boundary-layer. The model is used to study in the WENPEX. The simulation results are in agreement with observation data, especially the integral water in cloud.

Abstract:Being one of the rapid discipline branches in atmospheric science,atmospheric remote sensing technology is a critical support to the development of the science.As a branch,passive microwave remote sensing is characteristic of small volume,low power consumption and all-weather observation,and it can provide direct and useful information of the atmosphere,ocean and land surface.As water vapor and cloud liquid water play important roles in the weather and climate changes,the sensing techniques for water vapor and cloud liquid water are important in current meteorological operation.In this paper,we briefly introduce the advancement of passive microwave remote sensing,and chiefly introduce research progress in statistical,physical and physical/statistical retrieval algorithms of water vapor,liquid water and precipitation using microwave sensing.In the last section,future growth prospects of microwave sensing are briefly presented.

Abstract:The absorption characteristics of the atmospheric window in the microwave band (λ=8.5 mm and 3.2 cm) are studied. The results measured in Beijing by using both solar radiation method and atmospheric radiation method are compared with the values calculated from the radiosonde data so as to analyze their correlativity. The relationship between atmospheric window absorption and total column water vapour content is also discussed. The effects of clouds on the absorption are described.
A Review of Remote Sensing of Atmospheric Profiles and Cloud Properties by Ground-Based Microwave Radiometers in Central China

Abstract:Thermodynamic and liquid water profiles can be retrieved by a ground-based microwave radiometer (MWR) in nearly all weather conditions, which is useful for detecting mesoscale phenomena. This paper reviews the advances in remote sensing of atmospheric profiles and cloud properties by MWR in central China. Comparative studies indicate that MWR retrieval accuracy is different under various skies, especially those that decay under precipitation. The off-zenith method is proven to be capable of reducing the impact of precipitation and snow on MWR retrieval accuracy. Application studies demonstrate that MWR retrievals are helpful for early warning of rainstorms, hailstorms, and thunderstorms. Moreover, MWR retrievals provide a way to study cloud properties. The temporal variations of cloud occurrence frequency (COF) and liquid water path (LWP) are different for low, middle, and high clouds, and the vertical distribution of COF is also different in autumn and other seasons. Note that MWR can infer valid retrievals over the eastern Tibetan Plateau due to the weak precipitation over there. Also, cloud properties over the eastern Tibetan Plateau present differences from those over central China, and this is related to the different characteristics of atmospheric water vapor between these two regions. To bring more benefits for mechanism study and early warning of severe weather and numerical weather prediction, the decayed accuracy of MWR zenith retrievals under precipitation should be resolved. And combining MWR with other instruments is necessary for MWR application in detecting multi-layer clouds and ice clouds.

Abstract:Two kinds of passive microwave remote sensing data from a ground-based dual-frequency (22.235GHz (1.35 cm) & 35.3GHz (8 mm)) microwave radiometer and a Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission Microwave Imager (TRMM/TMI) are used for cloud liquid water amount retrieval in the Shouxian area of Anhui. Based on the statistic regression method, the retrieval formulas for cloud liquid water amount in this area are educed. It shows that there exists a threshold of 0.4 mm for cloud liquid water amount in this area, and when the cloud liquid water amount exceeds this threshold, the precipitation occurs. Before the precipitation, there appears a process of obvious increase in the amount of water vapor and cloud liquid water, and after the precipitation, a process of obvious decreases.

Abstract:Ground-based multichannel microwave radiometers can observe the atmospheric microwave radiation brightness temperature and continuously provide temperature and humidity profiles of the troposphere. At present, microwave radiometers are operated in many countries for monitoring climate and meteorological phenomena, and there have been many microwave radiometers of this kind presently implemented in China, but they lack a unified monitor for their operational condition, which is necessary if they are taken as a network. For this reason, a real-time monitoring receiving system of radiometer is fundamental and important. In order to check the system stability and the antenna performances, this paper studied the feasibility of applying the solar signals to monitor the antenna alignment, antenna pattern and stability of a radiometer system in working for operational field applications. An experiment was performed and the results from the analysis of the annual variation features with long-term solar observation data at four frequencies, 22.235, 26.235, 30.000 and 51.250 GHz, show that an antenna pattern retrieved from solar observations agrees well with that retrieved from the traditional method. In addition, a daily analysis of the solar signals in online data of a radiometer can be used for monitoring the alignment of the antenna and the stability of the ground-based microwave radiometer system.

Retrieving Land Surface Soil Parameters By Using Passive Microwave Remote Sensing Observations And Land Surface Models

Abstract:It is widely recognized that remote sensing data a very valuable source of information for the modeling of land-atmosphere interactions. During the last of couple decades, remote sensing data were used mainly to define the initial status of land surface models, to classify the land cover and land use type, and to correct the estimation of state variables in a data assimilation system. One relatively unexplored issue consists of the optimization of land surface parameters, such as, for example, soil texture, soil porosity, through remote sensing. This is due to the lack of a relationship which connecting remote sensing data with land surface parameters. The objective of this paper is to develop a systemic method to retrieve a number of land surface parameters through a combination of microwave remote sensing, radiative transfer modeling, land surface modeling and multi-objective optimizing. The microwave brightness temperature observations are used as the calibration references. The land surface model and radiative transfer model are used to determine the relationship between land surface parameters and the brightness temperature. The method is validated through a field experiment, in which a ground-based microwave radiometer is used to provide brightness temperature observations in a controllable footprint. Grand truth of soil parameters is also measured through intensive in situ samplings. The comparison of optimized parameters with the in situ observed ones indicates that our method has high potential to calibrate land surface parameters.
Atmospheric Exploration of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau during the East Asian Winter Monsoon (EAWM) from a Ground-Based Microwave Radiometer

Abstract:The investigation of atmospheric characteristics is of great significance in properly exploiting air and water resources, and quantitatively estimating and nowcasting precipitation. Microwave radiometers are widely used in this field because they can operate unattended for a long time under almost all weather conditions, and obtain high-quality remote sensing data. This research focuses on the applications of ground-based microwave radiometers in retrieving meteorological characteristics of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP) during the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM), such as humidity and temperature structures, stability/convection indices, and cloud and precipitation retrievals. Vertical structures of atmospheric temperature, pressure, humidity, and other variables were investigated under clear-sky and snowy-sky conditions. The statistical characteristics of stability/convection indices in the QTP region, such as convective available potential energy (CAPE) and convective inhibition (CIN), were investigated, with a special focus on snowy-sky conditions. The relationship between potential cloud water resources and atmospheric and thermodynamics and instability conditions were taken into consideration. The results showed that the peak CAPEs under clear-sky and snowy-sky conditions were 1349.11 J/kg and 1165.12 J/kg, which were relatively larger than the corresponding values during the summer monsoon. CINs during the EAWM were small enough to be negligible. For quantitative precipitation forecasting (QPF), brightness temperatures at 30.0 GHz and 51.24 GHz sampling channels were sensitive to the snowfall process. Within 1 h before snowfall, the precipitable water vapour (PWV) and liquid water content (LWC) increased sharply by 0.05 cm and 0.12 mm, respectively, while the CAPE and downwards CAPE decreased by 225.60 J/kg and 180.31 J/kg, respectively. The findings of this article may be meaningful for characterizing meteorology and precipitation in the QTP and similar regions during the winter monsoon.

Abstract:Multi-frequency passive microwave sensors herald a new dawn for combined land and atmosphere observations. Past efforts to utilize microwave remote sensing of atmosphere and land surface have proceeded by treating these two areas in a parallel fashion. In this research, a unified approach is presented that can be used to improve both quantitative and qualitative understanding of land and atmosphere constituents. A coupled Land Atmosphere Radiative-Transfer Model (LA-RTM) that can be used as a forward model in retrieval algorithms, or as an observation operator in data-assimilation schemes is developed. This model is validated using data collected during the 2003 Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer on board the Earth Observing Satellite (AMSR/AMSR-E) validation experiment over Wakasa Bay in Japan and the Coordinated Enhanced Observing Period (CEOP) dataset for the Tibetan Plateau collected in April and August 2004. These datasets comprise satellite (AMSR-R) observations, ground-based microwave radiometers (GBMRs) and radiosonde atmosphere soundings. In both sites, good agreement between simulated and observed brightness temperatures is demonstrated. To facilitate fast retrievals, a retrieval scheme is proposed that uses LA-RTM as a forward model to generate a look-up table (LUT) for varying land-surface conditions. This LUT is used to retrieve soil-moisture and surface-roughness conditions for the target site. Using this scheme, retrieved soil moisture at in situ stations was shown to have fairly good agreement with observations.

Abstract:Clouds are an important component of weather systems and are difficult to effectively characterize using current climate models and estimation of radiative forcing. Due to the limitations in observational capabilities, it remains difficult to obtain high-spatiotemporal-resolution, continuous, and accurate observations of clouds. To overcome this issue, we propose a novel and practical combined retrieval method using millimeter-wave radar and lidar, which enables the microphysical properties of thin liquid water clouds, such as cloud droplet effective radius, number concentration, and liquid water content, to be retrieved. This method was utilized to analyze the clouds observed at the Shanghai World Expo Park and was validated through synchronous observations with a microwave radiometer. Furthermore, the most suitable extinction backscatter ratio was determined through sensitivity analysis. This study provides vertical distributions of cloud microphysical properties with a time resolution of 1 min and a spatial resolution of 30 m, demonstrating the scientific potential of this combined retrieval method.

Abstract:The ability of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission Microwave Imager (TRMM/TMI) for rainfall and flooding detection has been demonstrated in this study. A dynamic cluster K-mean method was presented to classify surface types and rain areas.Based on the TMI measurements and surface observations during the Huaihe River Basin Energy and Water Cycle Experiment, the scattering index over land (SIL) was developed and a rain rate (RR) retrieval algorithm of TMI was established, in which the RR is the function of SIL and PCT85 (polarization corrected temperature at 85 GHz). Compared with the rainfall derived from the weather radar and the products of TMI(2A12) and TRMM/PR(2A25), the given surface classification method and the rain rate retrieval algorithm can provide reasonable estimates of rain areas and rain rates.On the basis of TMI measurements, four methods, the classification method, the soil wetness index (SWI) method, the polarization difference index (PDI) method, and the polarization ratio index (PRI) method, were utilized to monitor flooding and study soil wetness in the Yangtze River basin and the Huaihe River basin during summer 1998. Compared with the images provided by L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (L-SAR) and Radar Satellite (Radarsat) and the figures derived from daily rain gauge data based on the Z-index method, the four methods of flooding detection were proved to be successful, among which the PRI method was best.

Abstract:The first long-term rainfall monitoring experiment using the commercial microwave links (CMLs) network in East China is introduced. The network, located in Jiangyin, Jiangsu Province, consists of 49 links with frequencies ranging from 15 GHz to 26 GHz and lengths from 1.14 km to 4.78 km. An OTT PARSIVEL disdrometer is deployed to refine the local rain-induced attenuation relationship, and the CML observations are compared simultaneously with five rain gauges. The inversion parameters of the CML are optimized by minimizing the error of the accumulated rainfall of historical rainfall events. The inversion results show that the daily accumulated rainfall retrieved by the CMLs agrees well with the rain gauge measurements. As an opportunistic approach to monitor near-surface rainfall with high spatiotemporal representativeness and accuracy, the CML network can be used to monitor and forecast urban flood disasters, especially in regions where the widepread deployment of conventional meteorological instruments is impractical.

Abstract:Soil moisture(SM)plays an important role in global environment.The technique of microwave remote sensing(RS)has many advantages in monitoring the critical environmental parameters,its principle based on the close relation between soil water content and soil dielectric constant.This paper states the advances of microwave RS on SM retrieval from active microwave and passive microwave RS algorithm,application and shortcoming.The techniques of Synthetic Aperture Radar(SAR)and Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer(AMSR)are introduced respectively as emphasis,which both have a wide application.In active microwave RS,the present and future issues are in focus on how to decrease or get rid of the dependence of ground parameters measurements,how to decrease or eliminate the vegetation effects using available scatter models,and so on.In passive microwave RS,the research of model mechanism is lacking,more related studies need to be conducted,in combination with raditative transfer equation and wave analytic theory.In their combined fields,issues mainly concentrate on the scale transformation,data assimilation,etc.
