Abstract:A series of different conjugated systems of 2D/3D supramolecular metal-organic frameworks (SMOFs) are constructed by C/O-HCl hydrogen bonds and interactions. These complexes, [(HgLCl2)-Cl-1] (1), [(HgLCl2)-Cl-2] (2), [(HgLCl2)-Cl-3] (3), [(CdLCl4)-Cl-4](2) (4), and [(CdLCl2)-Cl-5(CH3OH)] (5), have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, H-1 NMR, FT-IR, and EA. The X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that 1 features a 3D supramolecular framework with {4(4)?6(6)} topology structure, while 2, 3, and 5 exhibit 3D 6-connected {4(12)?6(3)} topology structures. Complex 4 shows a two-dimensional layer with 4(4) topology structure. Based on these varied structures caused by different conjugated system, the emission maximum wavelengths of 1-5 can be tuned in a large range of 492-587nm. Both electron-donating ability and the conjugated system in general can support (em) shift to red direction. In order to have better understanding of electronic transitions of the complexes, a time-dependent DFT study has been performed. The enhancement of the fluorescence intensities for the complexes compared to the ligands indicates potential to serve as photoactive materials.[GRAPHICS].

Abstract:A new optical supramolecular compound constructed from a polyoxometalate cluster and an organic substrate [(H3O)(C12H10N3)2(PW12O40)] (1) has been synthesized via a hydrothermal reaction and has been structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. The solid-state diffuse reflectance, IR, and photoluminescence spectra of the title compound indicate that there is an interaction between the alpha-PW12O40 and the organic substrate. The light-yellow title compound shows a certain second-order nonlinear optical response of I(2omega) = 2I(KDP)(2omega).

Abstract:Functional nanosized cage complexes with an octahedral framework have been synthesized by the facile self-assembly reactions of six 90 PdII-containing compounds {[Pd(dppf)(OTf)(2)] or [Pd(PPh3)(OTf)(2)], dppf = 1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphanyl) ferrocene, OTf = trifluoromethylsulfonate} and four 120 degrees functional tritopic ligands [2,4,6-tri(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine] in acetone. Diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy (DOSY) and AFM images clarify the formation of 3-4 nm nanoparticles. These highly symmetrical cage complexes are discrete, face-directed, functional nanoparticles with symmetrical octahedral structures. The self-assembled functional cage complexes exhibit interesting electrochemical activities, and thus will potentially be useful in the catalysis of redox reactions, the encapsulation of sizeable guest molecules and the control of organic synthetic reactions.

Abstract:The self-assembly reaction of a multinodal preformed cluster with 1,2-di(pyridin-4-yl)ethane as the organic ligand afforded the 2D cluster polymer (1), {[(WS4Cu4)I2(dpe)2](DMF)4}n. There is a cavity between each two nearby dpe ligands in 1. The [WS4Cu4]2+ units are fixed by I− ions, which is attributed to the multinodal feature of the W–S–Cu secondary building units, and therefore, the cavities in 1 are settled. The NLO properties show that 1 exhibits an optical self-focusing behavior and reverse saturable absorption effects. This work provides us with useful clues to further explore the 2D W–Cu–S-based cluster polymer with cavities.

Abstract:A series of three-dimensional shape-persistent molecules with three conjugated arms perpendicular to a planar core were developed to self-assemble into supramolecular polymeric nanowires through multiple hydrogen-bonding interactions. After introducing bulky functional groups, aggregation of the nanowires was inhibited, and single molecular nanowires were obtained in concentrated solutions. Therefore, these nanowires had large surface areas with functional groups appended on the surface. Moreover, the photophysical properties of the functional groups including emission peaks and fluorescent lifetime were not changed after self-assembly. Some nanowires emitted high fluorescence after incorporating various chromophores on the side chains of the three-dimensional skeleton through effective fluorescence resonance energy transfer. For example, 1-BTHex showed a quantum efficiency of about 7.9% in solution, similar to the model compound DHBT. However, in the solid state the fluorescence of DHBT was almost quenched with a quantum efficiency lower than 1% due to pi-pi interactions, but 1-BTHex also gave much higher quantum efficiency, about 6%, which was close to that in solution.

Abstract:Wireframe, polyhedral, supramolecular complexes made of DNA have uniform sizes, defined three‐dimensional shapes, porous facets, hollow interiors, good biocompatibilities, and chemical functionalizability. They confer great potentials in bottom‐up nanoengineering towards various applications. In this review, we summarize recent advances in the rational design and programmed assembly of DNA wireframe polyhedra. Their assembly is based on three distinctively different strategies: individual strands‐based assembly, tile‐based assembly, and scaffolded DNA origami. Applications of these polyhedral structures in templated nanomaterial assembly and in‐vivo cargo delivery are discussed. In the future, expanding the structural complexity and exploring their applications, especially in nanomaterials science and biomedicines, should be a primary focus of this rapidly developing and evolving activity of structural DNA nanotechnology.

Abstract:Supramolecular polymeric nanowires 1(n) constructed by a 3D shape-persistent hexaacid 1 through multiple hydrogen bonding interactions was developed. Single molecular nanoires were also obtained from its highly dilute solution.Hexaacid 1 containing pi-conjugated chromophores successfully self-assembled to afford these nanofibers with high solid quantum efficiency (22%), which provides us a pathway to fabricate optoelectronic devices using these highly fluorescent nanofibers.

Abstract:A novel cluster WCu2S4(dPPf)(2).4DMF was synthesized by the reaction of(NH4)(2)WS4 with CuCl and 1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene (dppf) in the solid state. and its crystal structure has been characterized by X-ray diffraction. The cluster has a novel new skeletal structure with five metal atoms nearly in a line. Investigation of third-order optical nonlinear z-scan shows that it exhibits good nonlinear optical properties in a 1.2 x 10(-4) mol.dm(-3) DMF solution.

Abstract:A new 3D polymeric inorganic cluster with Cu in mixed-valence states was synthesized by the solid-state reaction of (NH4)2WS4, S8, CuCl, and Et4NCl; S8 may be regarded as the oxidizing agent converting Cu(I) to Cu(II) and causing the polymerization of [WS4]2-. The third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties are determined, and the results show that the cluster exhibits both large NLO absorptive and strong refractive behaviors.

Abstract:The assembly of atomically precise clusters into superstructures has tremendous potential in structural tunability and applications. Here, we report a series of single-cluster nanowires, single-cluster nanorings, and three-dimensional superstructure assemblies built by POM clusters. By stepwise tuning of interactions at molecular levels, the configurations can be varied from single-cluster nanowires to nanorings. A series of single-cluster nanostructures in different configurations can be achieved with up to 15 kinds of POM clusters. The single-cluster nanowires and three-dimensional superstructures perform enhanced activity in the catalytic and electrochemical sensing fields, illustrating the universal functionality of single-cluster assemblies.

Abstract:Two novel cluster coordination polymers, {[W4O4S12Cu12Cl2(4,4'-bipy)(12)]2Cl.4H(2)O}(n) (1) and {[(n-Bu)(4)N](2)[W2O2S6Cu6Br4(4,4'-bipy)(3)]}(n) (2) (4,4'-bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine), based on tetranuclear nest-shaped heterothiometallatillic secondary building units [WOS3Cu3] have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 shows a 3D 3-fold interpenetrated cationic diamondoid structure, whereas compound 2 shows a 1D anionic zigzag pattern. Both of them exhibit excellent third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties.

Abstract:Four novel In3+ and Cd2+ based 1D coordination compounds constructed by double betaine ligands were synthesized and characterized structurally and optically. They assemble into 3D supra‐molecular architectures via different stacking or entanglement of 1D zigzag shaped chains, in which C–H···Cl and C–H···O hydrogen bonding interactions play a dramatic impact. Compound 1 displays a 1D + 1D → 3D four‐connect lvt net with 42·84 topology. Compound 2 assembles into a 3D architecture by inclined stacking of the adjacent zigzag chains. Compound 3 displays a 2D + 2D → 3D inclined polycatenation based on the resulting 2D (6, 3) layers that constructed by 1D chains. Compound 4 displays a 3D supra‐molecular architecture based on 1D chains, which were connected via the hydrogen bonding. Meanwhile, four compounds emit in the range of visible region owing to the intra‐ligand π*→π and/or π*→n electron transition induced florescence.

Abstract:The assemblies of 1-(3-pyridyl)-2-(4'-pyrimidyl) ethene (L-4) with transition metal ions lead to different multidimensional supramolecular architectures with interesting net topologies. The ligand tends to assume a monodentate coordination mode through the pyridine group to generate mononuclear [M(L-4)(2)(H2O)(4)](2+) cations [M Cd (1), Mn (2), Co (3), Ni (4), Zn (5), Cu (6)] with ClO4- (1-5) or NO3- (6) as the counterion. The uncoordinated pyrimidyl group plays a critical directing role in the supramolecular assembly of the mononuclear species. In 1 and 6, the self-complementary intermolecular O-H center dot center dot center dot N hydrogen bonds involving all pyrimidyl nitrogen atoms and coordinated water molecules assemble the mononuclear species into 2-D sheets, and the sheets are further connected through the O-H center dot center dot center dot N hydrogen bonds between coordinated waters and ClO4- (1) or NO3- (6) to generate different 3-D architectures. In 2-5, one of the four pyrimidyl nitrogen atoms in each mononuclear cation is engaged in hydrogen bonding with a lattice water molecule, and consequently the self-assembly of the mononuclear species via the O-H(coordinated water)center dot center dot center dot N hydrogen bonds leads to 1-D tapes instead of 2-D sheets. The tapes are linked into a complicated 3D architecture through the lattice water molecules and ClO4- ions. On the other hand, in the compound with SO42- as the counterion (7), the ligand acts as a ditopic bridge to produce 1-D coordination chains of formula [Cu(L-4)(H2O)(4)](n)(2n+). The compound exhibits a very complicated 3D architecture, in which the hydrogen-bonded network of sulfate ions and water molecules is enclosed in the channel surrounded by the coordination chains.
Multidecker Bis(benzene)chromium : Opportunities for Design of Rigid and Highly Flexible Molecular Wires

Abstract:On the basis of density functional theory calculations, we have designed three classes of multidecker bis(benzene)chromium molecular wires with -(arene-chromium(0)-arene)- sandwich complexes as monomer units. The arene fragments of the wires are either [2.2]paracyclophane (class-1), biphenylene (class-2), or biphenyl (class-3) compounds with two strongly coupled benzene rings. The wires are rigid (class-1) or highly flexible (class-3), and they are realistic synthetic targets as the bonding at each Cr-(0) atom satisfies the 18-electron rule. The Cr-(0) atoms couple strongly with the arene units giving a "quasi-band" that stems from the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of the monomers, a HOMO sub-band in which the orbitals are highly delocalized indicating metal/pi-conjugation. Moreover, the HOMO energies are close to the Fermi energy of the metal electrodes used (Zn(111)), and therefore, injected electrons can easily tunnel through the wires. The metal of the electrodes was selected so that its Fermi level is located slightly above the HOMO energies of the wires. High conductivity and very slow decay of conductance with increased length are found for all three wire classes, making them suitable for molecular electronics applications. Class-2 and class-3 wires display high conformational flexibilities and, simultaneously, only modest conformational dependence of the conductance. These wires therefore function as molecular electrical cords, i.e., molecules which are easily twisted and coiled and for which the conductance displays only modest conformational dependence.

Abstract:Five Co-II complexes based on H3L1 and H3L2, namely, [Co-3(L-1)(2)(4,4'-bipy)(H2O)(3)](n) (1), [Co-3(L-1)(2)(4,4'-bipy)(3)(H2O)(4)](n) (2), {[Co-2(Li)(4,4'-bibp)(mu(3)-OH)(H2O)]center dot H2O}(n) (3), {[CO3(L-2)(2)(dib)(3)]center dot 2H(2)O}(n) (4), and [CO3(L-2)(2)(4,4'-bibp)(3)](n) (5) [(H3L1 = 4-[(3-carboxynaphthalen-2-yl)oxy]phthalic acid, H3L2 = 3-[(3-carboxynaphthalen-2-yl)oxy]phthalic acid, 4,4'-bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine, cub = 1,4-di(1H-imidazol-1-yl) benzene, and 4,4'-bibp = 4,4'-bis(imidazol)biphenyl] have been synthesized by solvothermal reactions. Complex 1 displays a (4,4,6) connected topology with a Schlafli symbol of (4.10(4).12)(4(11).6(4))(4(8).6)(2,) and the two-dimensional (2D) structure was assembled to form a three-dimensional (3D) framework by C-H center dot center dot center dot pi interactions of internaphthalene rings, showing the dominant antiferromagnetic exchanges in a triangular {Co3} cluster. Complex 2 presents a 2D (3,4,4)-connected network with a Schlafli symbol of (5.6(2))(2)(5(2).6(3).7)(2)(5(4).8(2)) and weakly antiferromagnetic behavior. Complex 3 features a novel (4,4,8)-connected topology with a Schlafli symbol of (3(2).4.5(2).6)(2)(3(2).4(2).5(2))(2)(3(4).4(6).5(8).6(7).7(2).8). In addition, complex 3 based on a parallelogram-shaped [Co-4(mu(3)-OH)(2)](6) secondary building unit provides antiferromagnetic interactions mediated by mu(3)-OH and syn-syn-COO- groups. The driving forces in 3D supramolecular frameworks are C-H center dot center dot center dot O, C-H center dot center dot center dot pi, and pi center dot center dot center dot pi stacking interactions for 2-3. Complexes 4-5 have an identical (4,4,5)-connected 2D network with a Schlafli symbol of (4.6(4).8)(4(2).6(7).8)(2)(4(4).6(2))(2). Additionally, the C-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds between naphthalene rings and uncoordinated carboxy oxygen atoms extend 2D networks into 3D supramolecular frameworks. Magnetic investigations reveal that 4 and 5 exhibit antiferromagnetic interactions in the linear {Co3} unit.

Abstract:To further investigate the influence of H-bond combining with pi-pi stack interaction on the optical performances, a few rigid zwitterionic squaraine molecules, with different terminal H-bond recognition abilities, are identified and designed. They can controllably construct a series of supramolecular self-assemblies with different morphologies and dimensions via a simple solution-based self-assembly method under mild conditions. The morphologies, synergetic reinforcing effect, and optical-thermal properties are investigated and confirmed by both theoretical and experimental methods. The results indicate that the morphologies of the resultant self-assemblies can be effectively controlled by rational molecular design, whose absorption and emission spectra and thermal stabilities accordingly change with the alteration of zwitterionic squaraine molecular structures.
