Abstract:MOF-based sensors capable of effectively and stably detecting toxic species in water have attracted huge attention in terms of improving environmental monitoring levels and water quality. Combining the flexibility of structure and modifying of pore surface, a multiwalled divider installation (MWDI) strategy is proposed and used for property enhancement. We herein report three metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) 1-3 based on a C3 symmetry organic phosphonic ligand with topology increased from 3,6-connected to 3,8-connected. Among them, MOFs 1 and 2 with remaining binding sites and large pores display lower luminescence response to Co2+ than does the applying standard. Guided by the MWDI strategy, 3 with high rigid framework and triple molecular installer divided rhombic pore was achieved under top-down topological analysis as anticipated, which endows high sensitivity and rapid response to Co2+, contributed by the synergy from free activated sites and appropriate pore and molecular dividing effect. Particularly, the high stability of 3 in boiling solvent and acid/base solutions has been evidenced and explained by structural robustness and kinetic inertness. Moreover, 3 shows excellent detection ability toward trinitrophenol (TNP) over other aromatic analytes in water, attributing to the predomination of energy transfers. Of note is that the used framework can be in situ regenerated into a fresh one. That provides a promising strategy to prepare effective and economic luminescent sensors in a predictable way for property modification.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) coupled with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been developed with an ultrahigh sensitivity for hazardous gas monitoring. Both the MOF/MWCNT and as-derived metal oxides (MOs)/MWCNTs hybrid fibers deliver an ultralow detection limit for NO2 down to 0.1 ppm without external heating, and they can be further bent into different angles without loss of sensing performance. Also, a high specific capacitance of 110 F cm-3 can also be obtained for MO/MWCNT hybrid fibers, demonstrating promising application for integrated wearable devices.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as very fascinating functional materials due to their tunable nature and diverse applications. In this work, we prepared a magnetic porous carbon (MPC) nanocomposite by employing iron-containing MOFs (MIL-88A) as precursors through a one-pot thermolysis method. It was found that the MPC can absorb selectively single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) probe to form MPC/ssDNA complex and subsequently quench the labelled fluorescent dye of the ssDNA probe, which is resulted from the synergetic effect of magnetic nanoparticles and carbon matrix. Upon the addition of complementary target DNA, however, the absorbed ssDNA probe could be released from MPC surface by forming double-stranded DNA with target DNA, and accompanied by the recovery of the fluorescence of ssDNA probe. Based on these findings, a sensing platform with low background signal for DNA fluorescent detection was developed. The proposed sensing platform exhibits high sensitivity with detection limit of 1 nM and excellent selectivity to specific target DNA, even single-base mismatched nucleotide can be distinguished. We envision that the presented study would provide a new perspective on the potential applications of MOF-derived nanocomposites in biomedical fields.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of hybrid materials assembled from metal ion/cluster connecting points and organic bridging ligands. On the basis of their properties of structural flexibility, porosity, controllable synthesis and flexibility of the pore size/wall modification, MOFs have shown great potential applications in biological sensing and imaging applications. Compared with inorganic nanomaterials (e.g., graphene, graphene oxide, gold nanoparticles and MoS2), MOFs are potentially advantageous for biological applications owing to their intrinsic biodegradability and the ability to use biocompatible building blocks. Recently, many types of MOFs were applied for sensing DNA, RNA, enzyme activity and small-biomolecules, as well as for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT), which are useful techniques for clinical diagnosis. In this review, I aim to present the recent progress achieved in MOF research for biosensing and bioimaging. The compositional tenability of MOF imaging platforms should greatly facilitate their further development for clinical translation. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
A Novel Cu-metal-organic Framework with Two-Dimensional Layered Topology for Electrochemical Detection Using Flexible Sensors.

Abstract:We present a novel Cu-metal-organic framework (MOF) with two-dimensional layered topology and techniques to integrate it with flexible sensors for electrochemical detection. The unique Cu-MOF is formed by coordinating Cu2+ ions with carboxylic oxygen groups, resulting in layered structures interlayerly connected by hydrogen bonds. The resulting flexible sensors exhibit capability in detecting ascorbic acid (AA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and L-Histidine (L-His) with detection limits of 2.94, 4.1 and 5.3 μM, respectively. The linear ranges of the sensors compare favorably with other sensors based on rigid platforms that offer similar sensitivity. According to the result of cytotoxicity study, the MOFs-modified flexible sensors exhibit good biocompatibility to cells, suggesting potential use in in vivo chemical detection. The results presented here demonstrate applications of MOFs in facilitating highly stable electrochemical detection in flexible electronics, and provide fundamental knowledge about structure-dependent electrochemical properties of MOFs and changing behaviors of flexible MOFs membranes under external strain. More MOFs-based flexible sensors may be developed to explore different properties of MOFs by varying their compositions and structures for healthcare and clinic applications.

Abstract:Following the efficient performance of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as recognition elements in gas sensors, biosensors based on MOFs are now being investigated to capture and quantify potential cancer biomarkers, such as circulating tumor cells (CTCs), nucleic acids and proteins. The current status of MOF-based biosensors in the detection of early stages of cancer is in its infancy, although it has significantly emerged since the beginning of this decade. That said, salient research has been conducted in the past five years to utilize the distinctive porous crystalline structure of MOFs for highly sensitive and selective detection of cancer biomarkers. In this pursual, MOFs designed with bimetallic assembly, doped with magnetic nanoparticles, coated with polymers, and even conjugated with peptides or oligonucleotides have shown promising outcomes in detecting CTCs, nucleic acids and proteins. In particular, aptamer-conjugated MOFs are able to perform at a lower limit of detection down to the femtomolar, implying their efficacy for the point of care testing in clinical trials. In this way, aptasensors based on aptamer-conjugated MOFs present a newer sub-branch, to be coined as a MOFTA sensor in the current review. Considering the emerging progress and promising outcomes of MOFTA sensors as well as a variety of MOF-based techniques of detecting cancer biomarkers, this review will highlight their significant advances and related aspects in the recent five years on the context of detecting CTCs, nucleic acids and proteins for the early-stage detection of cancer.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous materials with huge specific surface area and abundant active sites, which are composed of metal ions or clusters and organic ligands in the form of coordination bonds. In recent years, MOFs have been successfully applied in many fields due to their excellent physical, chemical, and biological properties. Electrochemical sensors have advantages such as economy, portability, and sensitivity, making them increasingly valued in the field of sensors. Many studies have shown that the electrode materials will affect the performance of electrochemical sensors. Therefore, the research on electrode materials is still one of the hotspots. MOFs are also commonly used to construct electrochemical sensors. However, electrochemical sensors prepared from single MOFs have shortcomings such as insufficient conductivity, low sensitivity, and poor electrochemical catalytic ability. In order to compensate for these defects, a new type of nanocomposite material with very ideal conductivity was formed by adding metal nanoparticles (MNPs) to MOFs. The combination of the two is expected to be widely applied in the field of sensors. This review summarizes the applications of various MNPs/MOFs composites in the field of electrochemical sensors and provides some references for the development of MNPs/MOFs composites-based electrochemical sensors in the future.

A Highly Sensitive Sensing Strategy Based on 2d Bimetallic Mofs and Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:Developing new and high-performance sensitive materials is of great importance for electrochemical sensors. In view of the large specific surface area and excellent electrocatalytic activity of bimetallic 2D MOFs, outstanding conductivity of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), NiCo bimetallic 2D MOFs was fabricated on MWCNTs via an in-situ growth method at room temperature. The composition, morphology, structure, and electrochemical properties of serious mono/bimetallic 2D MOFs/MWCNTs composite were compared, revealing the combination of bimetallic 2D MOFs and MWCNTs could effectively improve the specific surface area, electrochemical active area, electron transfer and electrocatalytic ability, which matched well with our design intent. Benefiting from these, the as-synthesized bimetallic 2D MOFs/MWCNTs hybrids showed superior electrochemical activity toward the oxidation and sensing of target molecules that were closely related to people's lives and health (e.g. DA, AC, and BPA). Their detection limits were as low as 5.1, 14.7 and 169 nM (S/N=3), respectively. A trusted sensor platform for DA, AC, and BPA determination in real samples was then successfully developed, and showed satisfied recovery. This work will create a new idea for the development of highly sensitive and highly selective electrochemical sensing materials, and provide a new method for the rapid detection of life and health related molecules.

Abstract:An oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes-metal organic framework composite (OM-MOF) was prepared by solvothermal synthesis methods and characterized by Fourier infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. The prepared material was subsequently applied in simultaneous electrochemical detection of Pb2+ and Cd2+. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry were performed for electrochemical characterization. Some experimental conditions such as material concentration, buffer solution types, buffer pH, deposition potential and deposition time have been explored. Under optimum conditions, electrochemical detection and application were carried out, where good linear (0.05-5 mu M) and sensitivity (4.96 mu A/mu M for Pb2+ and 3.07 mu A/mu M for Cd2+), were obtained. Meanwhile, the detection limit for Pb2+ and Cd2+ was 13 and 38 nM, respectively.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are remarkably porous materials that have sparked a lot of interest in recent years because of their fascinating architectures and variety of potential applications. This paper systematically summarizes recent breakthroughs in MOFs and their derivatives with different materials such as, carbon nanotubes, graphene oxides, carbon fibers, enzymes, antibodies and aptamers etc. for enhanced electrochemical sensing applications. Furthermore, an overview part is highlighted, which provides some insights into the future prospects and directions of MOFs and their derivatives in electrochemical sensing, with the goal of overcoming present limitations by pursuing more inventive ways. This overview can perhaps provide some creative ideas for future research on MOF-based materials in this rapidly expanding field.

The types and functions of MOF−based nanomaterials in terms of the design of electrochemical sensors are also discussed. Furthermore, the limitations and challenges of MOF−based electrochemical sensing devices are explored. This work should be invaluable for the development of MOF−based advanced sensing platforms.

Abstract:A nanotubular metal-organic framework (MOF), {[(WS(4)Cu(4))I(2)(dptz)(3)]·DMF}(n) (dptz = 3,6-di(pyridin-4-yl)-1,2,4,5-tetrazine, DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide) for sensing small solvent molecules is presented. When accommodating different solvent molecules as guests, the resulting inclusion compounds exhibit different colors depending on the solvent guests, and more interestingly, the band gaps of these solvent-included complexes are in linear correlation with the polarity of the guest solvents. The solvent molecules can be sensed by the changes of UV-vis spectra of the corresponding inclusion compounds, showing a new way of signal transduction as a new kind of sensor. The sensing by such a MOF occurs within the channel-containing material rather than on the external surface.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as chemical sensors have developed rapidly in recent years. There have been many papers concerning this field and interest is still growing. The reason is that the specific merits of MOFs can be utilized to enhance sensitivity and selectivity by various energy/charge transfers occurring among different ligands, ligand, and metal centers, such as from ligands to metal centers or metal centers to ligands, as well as from MOF skeletons to guest species. This review intends to provide an update on recent progress in various applications of different MOF-based sensors on the basis of their luminescent and electrochemical responses towards small molecules, gas molecules, ions (cations and anions), pH, humidity, temperature, and biomolecules. MOF-based sensors function by utilizing different mechanisms, including luminescent responses of "turn-on" and "turn-off", as well as electrochemical responses.
Bimetallic Two-Dimensional Metal-Organic Frameworks for the Chemiresistive Detection of Carbon Monoxide

Abstract:This paper describes the demonstration of a series of heterobimetallic, isoreticular 2D conductive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with metallophthalocyanine (MPc, M=Co and Ni) units interconnected by Cu nodes towards low-power chemiresistive sensing of ppm levels of carbon monoxide (CO). Devices achieve a sub-part-per-million (ppm) limit of detection (LOD) of 0.53 ppm toward CO at a low driving voltage of 0.1 V. MPc-based Cu-linked MOFs can continuously detect CO at 50 ppm, the permissible exposure limit required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), for multiple exposures, and realize CO detection in air and in humid environment. Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and comparison experiments suggest the contribution of Cu nodes to CO binding and the essential role of MPc units in tuning and amplifying the sensing response.

Abstract:Taking advantage of high porosity, large surface area, tunable nanostructures and ease of functionalization, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been popularly applied in different fields, including adsorption and separation, heterogeneous catalysis, drug delivery, light harvesting, and chemical/biological sensing. The abundant active sites for specific recognition and adjustable optical and electrical characteristics allow for the design of various sensing platforms with MOFs as promising candidates. In this review, we systematically introduce the recent advancements of MOFs-based fluorescent chemosensors and biosensors, mainly focusing on the sensing mechanisms and analytes, including inorganic ions, small organic molecules and biomarkers (e.g., small biomolecules, nucleic acids, proteins, enzymes, and tumor cells). This review may provide valuable references for the development of novel MOFs-based sensing platforms to meet the requirements of environment monitoring and clinical diagnosis.
