Abstract:Cobalt sulfide is favorable for supercapacitors, but its application is inhibited by the inherent slow charge transfer kinetics and poor stability in alkaline solution. Herein, zeolitic imidazole framework (ZIF)-derived Co3S4 nanoplate arrays (NPAs) decorated with CeO2 nanoparticles (NPs) grown on Ni foam have been developed. The obtained Co3S4/CeO2-NPAs display a 2D leaf-like nanoplate morphology (average thickness of nearly 230 nm) with a large amount of oxygen vacancies and exhibits remarkably boosted specific capacity/capacitance, i.e., 1155.8 C/g (2408 F/g) at 0.5 A/g with a notable rate capability (76.5% at 10 A/g), compared to Co3S4-NPAs or CeO2 NPs. More importantly, a two-electrode cell comprising the Co3S4/CeO2-NPAs and an activated carbon electrode displays a high energy density of 45.4 Wh/kg (at a power density of 850 W/kg) with decent long-term durability. Furthermore, a red light-emitting diode can be lighted up for 10 min by two charged cells, showing great prospect of Co3S4/CeO2-NPAs. The outstanding electrochemical properties of the Co3S4/CeO2-NPAs are mainly attributed to the 2D nanoplate morphology with much accessible active sites and the introduction of CeO2 NPs. The Co3S4/CeO2-rich interfaces promote electron transfer between Co3S4 and CeO2. The abundant oxygen vacancies adhere to the surface of Co3S4 and can enhance the electronic conductivity and the capture of OH-. In addition, the CeO2 layer can protect the Co3S4-NPAs from corrosion by the KOH electrolyte during the electrochemical process. Therefore, the electrode developed by this work has great potential in electrochemical applications.

Abstract:Transition metal nitrides are promising materials for supercapacitor electrodes owing to their high electrochemical capacity and good chemical stability. However, it remains challenging to control crystallinity, electrical conductivity and electrochemical active sites in the common routes of synthesizing these materials. Here we use a one-step and scalable transferred arc method to prepare TiN nanoparticles, which possess a well-defined cubic crystal structure with a nano-size distribution of 5-20 nm. The TiN nanoparticles are then deposited onto plasma-produced vertical graphene (VG) support materials to form hybrid TiN/VG electrodes for supercapacitors. In aqueous Li2SO4 electrolyte operated at a voltage window of 1.0 V, the TiN/VG hybrid displays areal capacitance more than four times higher than that of commercial TiN deposited VG hybrid. As the voltage window is expanded to 1.8 V, the TiN/VG electrode can achieve areal capacitance of 9.0 mF cm(-2) at a scan rate of 100 mV s(-1) while maintaining 89.5% of the initial capacitance after 10,000 cycles, which are among the highest values reported for TiN nanoparticles. These results indicate that TiN nanoparticles produced by the transferred arc technique are highly promising for energy storage applications.

Abstract:In this work, uniform CuCo2O4 nanowires (CCO-NWs) and nanosheets (CCO-NSs) were directly grown on the stainless-steel foil via a hydrothermal process with a post calcination treatment in air, and powdered CuCo2O4 materials were obtained once they were peeled off from the stainless-steel substrate. These NWs- and NSs-based powders possessed a huge specific surface area and mesoporous feature. After electrochemical tests, it was found that the CCO-NWs delivered a capacity of 299.12 C g−1 and CCO-NSs could exhibit a capacity of up to 332.18 C g−1. A hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) was assembled with activated carbon (AC) as anode to evaluate the practical applications of CuCo2O4 in energy storage. The CCO-NWs//AC HSC exhibited an energy density of 36.16 W h kg−1 at 1.01 kW kg−1, and as for the CCO-NSs//AC HSC, it delivered 38.46 W h kg−1 at the power density of 1.03 kW kg−1. Both HSCs showed excellent cycling performance over 5000 cycles at 6 A g−1. The superior electrochemical performance of CuCo2O4 NWs and NSs indicates that the battery-type CuCo2O4 electrode materials can serve as advanced cathode for high-performance supercapacitors, and the simple synthetic method can be extended to the preparation of other transition metal oxides (TMOs)-based electrode materials with uniform structure and impressive electrochemical properties.

Abstract:In this work, a sandwich-like structure of ZnO nanoparticle-decorated two-dimensional Ti3C2 has been synthesized by the direct precipitation method and a subsequent heat-treatment process. During the synthesis procedure, ZnO nanoparticles are uniformly distributed on the surface and interlayer of Ti3C2 sheets, which effectively prevents the restacking of Ti3C2 sheets and forms a sandwich-like structure. Serving as a supercapacitor electrode, the electrochemical performances of the as-prepared Ti3C2/ZnO were characterized by cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. These results show that the as-synthesized Ti3C2/ZnO delivers an improved specific capacitance of 120 F g(-1) at 2 mV s(-1) and excellent cycling stability with the capacitance retained at 85% after 10 000 cycles at 5 A g(-1). The good electrochemical performances of Ti3C2/ZnO indicate that this metal oxide/two-dimensional layered nanocomposite has promising potential in supercapacitor applications.
Hierarchical CoNi2S4 Nanosheet/nanotube Array Structure on Carbon Fiber Cloth for High-Performance Hybrid Supercapacitors

Abstract:Well-defined nanostructures are attractive due to their excellent advantages in enhancing the performance of electrochemical energy storage. In this work, a kind of hybrid structure of hierarchical CoNi2S4 nanosheet/nanotube array directly assembled on carbon fiber cloth has been designed and developed for high-performance supercapacitors. CoNi2S4 nanosheet/nanotube arrays are fabricated through orderly electrodeposition of ZnO nanorod arrays and CoNi2S4 nanosheets, followed by removing ZnO nanorods template. Benefiting from the unique hollow nanostructure with abundant electrochemical active sites, the specific capacitance of this electrode can reach up to 995.8 C g(-1) at a current density of 2 A g(-1), along with excellent rate capability (740 C g(-1) at 50 A g(-1)). Moreover, the hybrid supercapacitors are prepared by using hierarchical CoNi2S4 nanosheet/nanotube arrays as positive electrode and reduced graphene oxide-carbon nanotubes as negative electrode for energy storage application, which demonstrate a high energy density of 35 Wh kg(-1) at a power density of 3 kW kg(-1) and excellent cycle stability with 96.9% capacitance retention after 10000 cycles. Binder-free metal-organic frameworks-derived CoP/Mo-doped NiCoP nanoplates for high-performance quasi-solid-state supercapacitors

Abstract:The design of hierarchical nanostructures with a controlled composition arrangement is a promising strategy to achieve high ion transport and enhanced charge storage for high-performance supercapacitor electrode development. Herein, we report a high-energy-density electrode based on CoP/Mo-NiCoP nanoplates array on carbon cloth templated by the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The unique hierarchical 3D structure provides an extremely large surface that enables excellent accessibility to the active surface sites, promoting electrochemical energy storage performance effectively. In addition, according to the density functional theory (DFT) calculation, Mo-doped in CoP/NiCoP nanoplates results in a desired electronic structure to enhance electronic transfer capability. As a result, the CoP/Mo-NiCoP electrode presents a high specific capacity of 892.6 C g−1 (248 mAh g−1) at the current density of 1 A g−1, as well as good rate capability (78.9% of capacity at 20 A g−1), and long-term cycling stability (82.6% retention after 10000 cycles at 4 A g−1). Furthermore, the assembled supercapacitor yielded a high energy density of 64.7 Wh kg−1 at 800 W kg−1 with an operating voltage of 1.6 V, outperforming most asymmetric supercapacitors. This work shows a promising hierarchical nanomaterial array for the development of high-performance flexible supercapacitors.

Abstract:Flexible electrodes with excellent energy storage and conversion properties that can be produced by a simple process are highly desirable for supercapacitors. Herein, Cobalt‐Nickel double hydroxide (CoNi‐DH) micro‐nanosheet arrays are prepared uniformly on naturally sedimented Ti3C2Tx films by an etching‐deposition‐growth process to form a CoNi‐DH@Ti3C2Tx heterostructure. The naturally sedimented Ti3C2Tx film serves as the substrate to minimize aggregation of the CoNi‐DH nanoarrays to enhance the electrical conductivity. Furthermore, the hierarchical structure comprised of the CoNi‐DH interconnected nanoarrays promotes electrolyte access. By taking advantage of the excellent electrical conduction and high theoretical specific capacitance, the flexible CoNi‐DH@Ti3C2Tx electrode in the supercapacitor delivers a superior specific capacitance of 919.5 F g−1 at 1 A g−1, and remarkable capacitance retention of 89.6% after 5000 cycles at 20 A g−1. Density‐functional theory calculations are performed to investigate the charge density difference and partial density of states of CoNi‐DH@Ti3C2Tx and the theoretical assessment suggests that the chemical bonds between Ti3C2Tx and CoNi‐DH are critical to the charge transport, electrical conductivity, and structural stability. Hierarchical CoNi‐DH micro‐nanosheet arrays are prepared uniformly on naturally sedimented Ti3C2Tx films by an etching‐deposition‐growth process to form a CoNi‐DH@Ti3C2Tx heterostructure. Abstract:Ultrathin nanoporous Fe3O4–carbon nanosheets (NNSs) with a high surface area of 229 m2 g−1 were synthesized by using a two-step method. The high capacitance of 163.4 F g−1 was achieved by utilizing such NNSs electrodes due to their unique feature, which is much higher than those of previously reported Fe3O4 hybrid products. The interconnected porous framework surface greatly enhanced charge transfer due to larger interfaces, and carbon nanopillars between nanosheet layers brought high conductivity.

Abstract:Transition metal sulfides have been widely explored as electrode materials for supercapacitors. Unfortunately, the slow redox reaction kinetics and severe volume changes during charge/discharge result in compromised electrochemical performance. In this work, a nickel-cobalt sulfide hollow nanosheets array decorated with cerium oxide nanoparticles (NiCoS/CeO2) has been constructed by using cobalt zeolitic imidazolate framework-L as the template coupled with subsequent solvolthermal synthesis. Benefiting from the advantages of the hollow and hierarchical NiCoS nanosheets with large accessible active sites and fast charge transport pathways, as well as CeO2 layer with rich oxygen vacancies and strong interaction between NiCoS and CeO2, the NiCoS/CeO2 exhibits a high specific capacity of 1278.1 C g−1 (1 A g−1), which is approximately 1.9 times that of the NiCoS. The asymmetric supercapacitor assembled from the NiCoS/CeO2 and an activated carbon shows excellent storage capability (34.9 W h kg−1 at 850.0 W kg−1) and impressive cycle life (91.9% capacitance retention after 10,000 charge and discharge cycles at 10 A g−1).

Abstract:Novel carbonaceous hybrid materials are fabricated through the in situ growth of open-tipped mesoporous carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on low-cost activated carbon (AC) substrates with cobalt (Co) nanoparticles as the growing seeds via a chemical vapor deposition process. The CNTs are strongly bonded with the surface of the AC supports using the fine Co nanoparticles (<10 nm) as the joints. The unique three-dimensional hybrid architectures enable the resultant materials to exhibit a considerable specific capacitance of up to 440 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1) as well as an excellent rate performance (97% retention ratio at 5 A g(-1) compared to 1 A g(-1)). In addition, the hybrid materials have an impressive cycling stability with an initial capacitance retention of 98.4% after 3000 cycles at 5 A g(-1). Besides the high specific surface area, such an excellent capacitive performance is mainly attributed to the combination of (i) the well-dispersed open-tipped CNTs (5-12 nm) that could provide more effective ion channels, (ii) the interconnected CNT conducting networks facilitating the transport of electrons, and (iii) superfine Co nanoparticles (3-9 nm) offering pseudocapacitance, indicating the synergistic effect of both the electrical double layer capacitance and pseudocapacitive reactions.

Abstract:A hybrid nanocomposite (NCO-CNF) with 3D hierarchical porous nickel cobalt-oxide (NCO) nanosheets structure was successfully constructed on the surface of the N-doped carbon nanofiber (CNF) through the combination of electrospinning, hydrothermal and heat-treatment process, where the CNF as a structural scaffold and excellent conductor to improve the conduction of electrons and effectively prevent aggregation of NCO-CNF nanosheets. Thus, generating a synergistic electrochemical enhancement through maximize utilization of two components and strong coupling interaction between 1D CNF and 2D NCO nanosheets. The resultant NCO-CNF delivered outstanding specific capacitance as high as 343 F g−1 in three electrode system. Furthermore, the obtained NCO-CNF can as the positive electrode while the CNF serves as the negative electrode to assemble the solid asymmetric supercapacitor and the energy density of NCO-CNF//CNF is up to 44.8 Wh kg−1 (44.8 μWh cm−2). This work leaves more strategies for utilizing effectively 2D nanomaterials and carbon fiber.

Abstract:This work reports hierarchical "tube-on-fiber" nanostructures, composed of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on carbon nanofibers (CNFs), impregnated with mixed-metal selenide nanoparticles (Co-Zn-Se@CNTs-CNFs), as high performance supercapacitors. Co-Zn hybrid zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (Co-Zn ZIF-67) was electrospun with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) to form nanofibers that were sequentially thermally treated and subjected to selenylation. The "tube-on-fiber" structure is designed to confine the Co-Zn mixed-metal selenide nanoparticles and prevents their agglomeration. Extruded CNTs rooting in carbon nanofibers further improve the electronic conductivity. The mixed-metal selenide allows more accommodation space and faradic reactions compared to single metal selenide. Based on these merits, the hierarchical Co-Zn-Se@CNTs-CNFs exhibit a high specific capacity of 1040.1 C g-1 (1891 F g-1) at 1 A g-1 with impressive rate performance in supercapacitors. Furthermore, a hybrid supercapacitor with Co-Zn-Se@CNTs-CNFs as the cathode and porous carbon nanofibers as the anode (denoted as Co-Zn-Se@CNTs-CNFs//PCNFs) is fabricated. It delivers a superior energy and power density of 61.4 W h kg-1 and 754.4 W kg-1, respectively, and meanwhile retains 31.7 W h kg-1 of the energy density with 15 421.6 W kg-1 of the working power. In addition, the assembled supercapacitor device displays an excellent capacity retention of 88.6% after 8000 cycles at 5 A g-1.

Abstract:Transition metal sulfides are gaining attention as a new highly capacitive active material for high-performance supercapacitors, however, it is still a challenge that synthesizes a distinctive structure to enhance the electrochemical characteristics and practical applications. In this work, hierarchical structural hybrid metal sulfides (NiCo2S4/Co4S3) based on nanosheets and nanocages are synthesized by sulfurating the NiCo-LDH/ZIF-67 precursors. The NiCo2S4/Co4S3 electrode with remarkable layered and porous structure effectively increase the electrochemical active surface area and accelerate the charge transfer, achieving a high specific capacitance of 8.43 F cm−2 at a current density of 2 mA cm−2 and good cyclic stability. An assembled asymmetric supercapacitor with activated carbon delivers a high energy density of 0.50 mWh cm−2 at a power density of 1.69 mW cm−2. These results demonstrate that NiCo2S4/Co4S3 is an ideal electrode material for high-performance electrochemical energy storage devices.

Abstract:Ni 0.5 Co 0.5 (OH) 2 nanosheets coated CuCo 2 O 4 nanoneedles arrays were successfully designed and synthesized on carbon fabric. The core/shell nanoarchitectures directly served as the binder-free electrode with a superior capacity of 295.6 mAh g -1 at 1 Ag -1 , which still maintained 220 mAh g -1 even at the high current density of 40 Ag -1 , manifesting their enormous potential in hybrid supercapacitor devices. The asassembled CuCo 2 O 4 @Ni 0.5 Co 0.5 (OH) 2 //AC hybrid supercapacitor device exhibited favorable properties with the specific capacitance as high as 90 Fg -1 at 1 Ag -1 and the high energy density of 32 Wh kg -1 at the power density of 800 Wkg -1 . Furthermore, the as-assembled device also delivered excellent cycling performance(retaining 91.9% of the initial capacitance after 12,000 cycles at 8 Ag -1 ) and robust mechanical stability and flexibility, implying the huge potential of present hierarchical electrodes in energy storage devices.
Uniformly highly dispersed hollow NiCo2S4 nanospheres anchored on carbon cloth as cathodes for high-performance hybrid supercapacitors

Abstract:In this paper, we successfully anchor NiCo2S4 (NCS) hollow spheres (HS) on carbon cloth (CC) via an electrostatic adsorption-assisted template strategy. Synthesized NCS HS/CC composites show high conductivity and excellent cycle performance due to the synergistic effect of their structural properties. Compared to NCS HS, NCS HS/CC exhibits a high specific capacity of 724.9C/g, good rate performance (88.5 %, 20 A/g) and excellent cycle stability (91.06 %, 5000 cycles). In addition, the fabricated hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) devices have excellent energy/power density (35.44 Wh/kg, 800 W/kg) and superior cycling stability, with 97.5 % capacity retention after 5000 cycles at 10 A/g. This electrostatic adsorption-assisted hard template strategy provides a method for preparing electrode materials with unique structures and excellent performance.

Abstract:Electrode materials with hierarchical self-supporting core-shell structures, with the metric of structural advantages and synergetic effect for different components, have been widely applied in supercapacitor. Besides, interface designing would improve the bonding of different components and further enhance the stability of electrochemical performance. In this work, by the introduction of CNTs layer to construct the conductive and rugged interface on SiC nanowires (NWs), the formed core-shell SiCNWs@CNTs network were served as conductive skeleton for supporting NiCo2O4 nanosheets (NSs). Benefiting from the unique hierarchical structure with designed interface, the formed SiCNWs@2O4NSs electrode exhibits exceptional electrochemical performance with high specific capacitance of 2302 F g-1 (319.7 mAh g-1) at 1 A g-1, excellent rate capability (86.3% capacitance retention at 20 A g-1) and outstanding cycling stability (95% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles). Furthermore, the hybrid supercapacitor assembled SiCNWs@2O4NSs and activated carbon (AC), exhibits a high energy density of 64.2 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 0.79 kW kg-1, long cycle life and good flexibility. More impressively, this work provides a facile method for rationally constructing electrode materials with hierarchical structures for high-performance flexible energy storage devices.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted intensive attention for high-performance supercapacitors owing to their large specific surface area and tunable pore structure. Herein, ultrathin NiCo-MOF nanosheets are fabricated by a facile ultrasonication at room temperature and employed as a supercapacitor electrode material. The unique nanosheet-like structure of NiCo-MOF provides more electroactive sites and a shorter pathway for electron transfer and electrolyte diffusion, resulting in excellent electrochemical performance with a high specific capacitance of 1202.1 F g–1 at 1 A g–1. In addition, an asymmetric supercapacitor of NiCo-MOF//activated carbon was assembled in 2 M KOH electrolyte. It delivers an energy density of 49.4 W h kg–1 at a power density of 562.5 W h kg–1 in a voltage window of 1.5 V. The results demonstrate a new method to fabricate ultrathin MOF nanosheets for high-performance supercapacitor electrode materials.
