Abstract:The integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems based on the linear frequency modulation (LFM) waveforms have attracted substantial attention. However, existing routines suffer from additional synchronization preamble overhead, which limits both communication and sensing performance. This work, using the dual-chirp with opposite slopes, exploits a preamble-free synchronization scheme for the LFM-based ISAC. We first theoretically analyze the quasi-orthogonal property of the proposed dual-chirp LFM waveform and derive its achievable communication rate and range ambiguity function. A photonics-assisted proof-of-concept ISAC experiment is conducted in the 300 GHz frequency band, achieving a 20 Gbps data rate with a distinguished peak sidelobe ratio (PSLR) of up to 29.2 dB and 1.5 cm range resolution. More importantly, less than 0.5% synchronous power overhead is needed in our scheme. In addition, the performance trade-off induced by the data rate and amplitude ratio is validated in the experiment, which is in line with our theoretical analysis. Therefore, the proposed scheme provides a promising solution for synchronizing LFM-based future ISAC systems.
Precision Joint RF Measurement of Inter-Satellite Range and Time Difference and Scalable Clock Synchronization for Multi-Microsatellite Formations.

Abstract:The rapid development of multi-satellite formations requires inter-satellite radio frequency (RF) measurement to be both precise and scalable. The navigation estimation of multi-satellite formations using a unified time reference demands the simultaneous RF measurement of the inter-satellite range and time difference. However, high-precision inter-satellite RF ranging and time difference measurements are investigated separately in existing studies. Different from the conventional two-way ranging (TWR) method, which is limited by its reliance on a high-performance atomic clock and navigation ephemeris, asymmetric double-sided two-way ranging (ADS-TWR)-based inter-satellite measurement schemes can eliminate such reliance while ensuring measurement precision and scalability. However, ADS-TWR was originally proposed for ranging-only applications. In this study, by fully exploiting the time-division non-coherent measurement characteristic of ADS-TWR, a joint RF measurement method is proposed to obtain the inter-satellite range and time difference simultaneously. Moreover, a multi-satellite clock synchronization scheme is proposed based on the joint measurement method. The experimental results show that when inter-satellite ranges are hundreds of kilometers, the joint measurement system has a centimeter-level accuracy for ranging and a hundred-picosecond-level accuracy for time difference measurement, and the maximum clock synchronization error was only about 1 ns.

Abstract:SummaryHigh-precision time comparison and synchronization is required with the increasing application of the optical clocks in precise navigation, gravitational sensing, and relativity experiments. However, previous works at femtosecond-level time synchronization did not extend beyond dozens of kilometers. Here we demonstrate real-time synchronization of two optical clocks over a turbulent 113-km free space link via optical two-way time and frequency transfer. Despite optical power attenuation of 80dB due to atmospheric turbulence, the time deviation between two synchronized time scales is below 50 fs over a 15-hour measurement period, and a stability of less than 1.6 × 10 −19 at 10,000 s is achieved through an out-of-loop time-frequency transfer link. The ability to synchronize two distant optical clocks can support future precision navigation, and it also provides technical foundation for the future femtosecond clock synchronization over ground-to-satellite free-space paths.

We discuss a recent experiment that demonstrated time and frequency synchronization via a commercial fiber network, reaching accuracy of 7×10-15/s, 5×10-19/day, and a maximum time un-certainty of less than 50 femtoseconds. We discuss synchronization methods applicable to different topologies and their important scientific applications.

Abstract:Networks of optical clocks find applications in precise navigation1,2, in efforts to redefine the fundamental unit of the 'second'3-6 and in gravitational tests7. As the frequency instability for state-of-the-art optical clocks has reached the 10-19 level8,9, the vision of a global-scale optical network that achieves comparable performances requires the dissemination of time and frequency over a long-distance free-space link with a similar instability of 10-19. However, previous attempts at free-space dissemination of time and frequency at high precision did not extend beyond dozens of kilometres10,11. Here we report time-frequency dissemination with an offset of 6.3 × 10-20 ± 3.4 × 10-19 and an instability of less than 4 × 10-19 at 10,000 s through a free-space link of 113 km. Key technologies essential to this achievement include the deployment of high-power frequency combs, high-stability and high-efficiency optical transceiver systems and efficient linear optical sampling. We observe that the stability we have reached is retained for channel losses up to 89 dB. The technique we report can not only be directly used in ground-based applications, but could also lay the groundwork for future satellite time-frequency dissemination.

Abstract:Synchronous laser-microwave networks delivering attosecond timing precision are highly desirable in many advanced applications, such as geodesy, very-long-baseline interferometry, high-precision navigation and multi-telescope arrays. In particular, rapidly expanding photon science facilities like X-ray free-electron lasers and intense laser beamlines require system-wide attosecond-level synchronization of dozens of optical and microwave signals up to kilometer distances. Once equipped with such precision, these facilities will initiate radically new science by shedding light on molecular and atomic processes happening on the attosecond timescale, such as intramolecular charge transfer, Auger processes and their impact on X-ray imaging. Here, we present for the first time a complete synchronous laser-microwave network with attosecond precision, which is achieved through new metrological devices and careful balancing of fiber nonlinearities and fundamental noise contributions. We demonstrate timing stabilization of a 4.7-km fiber network and remote optical-optical synchronization across a 3.5-km fiber link with an overall timing jitter of 580 and 680 attoseconds RMS, respectively, for over 40 hours. Ultimately we realize a complete laser-microwave network with 950-attosecond timing jitter for 18 hours. This work can enable next-generation attosecond photon-science facilities to revolutionize many research fields from structural biology to material science and chemistry to fundamental physics.

Abstract:For ultraviolet (UV) communication systems with discrete Poisson channel and photon-counting-based receivers, commonly used synchronization scheme is to perform correlation at the start of each frame, but this scheme is difficult to correct the error caused by clock frequency offset within the frame. In this paper, a UV communication system with our self bit synchronization scheme is proposed. It adopts on-off keying (OOK) modulation, and uses the real-time result of photon counting module to synchronize the counting window without any extra input. The proposed scheme regards the input signal envelope as rectangular waves, matches and merges obvious edges detected, and computes moving distance. Our system achieves a bit error rate (BER) of 1.5 x 10(-4) at 25.6 kbps bit rate when the average photon amount in a single bit 1 duration is at about 40.

Absolute clock synchronization with a single time-correlated photon pair source over 10km

Abstract:We demonstrate a point-to-point clock synchronization protocol based on bidirectionally propagating photons generated in a single spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) source. Tight timing correlations between photon pairs are used to determine the single and round-trip times measured by two separate clocks, providing sufficient information for distance-independent absolute synchronization secure against symmetric delay attacks. We show that the coincidence signature useful for determining the round-trip time of a synchronization channel, established using a 10\,km telecommunications fiber, can be derived from photons reflected off the end face of the fiber without additional optics. Our technique allows the synchronization of multiple clocks with a single reference clock co-located with the source, without requiring additional pair sources, in a client-server configuration suitable for synchronizing a network of clocks.

Abstract:Optical clock networks play important roles in various fields, such as precise navigation, redefinition of “second” unit, and gravitational tests. To establish a global-scale optical clock network, it is essential to disseminate time and frequency with a stability of 10^−19 over a long-distance free-space link. However, such attempts were limited to dozens of kilometers in mirror-folded configuration. Here, we take a crucial step toward future satellite-based time-frequency disseminations. By developing the key technologies, including high-power frequency combs, high-stability and high-efficiency optical transceiver systems, and efficient linear optical sampling, we demonstrate free-space time-frequency dissemination over two independent links with femtosecond time deviation, 3 × 10 −19 at 10,000 s residual instability and 1.6 × 10^−20 ± 4.3 × 10^−19 offset. This level of the stability retains for an increased channel loss up to 89 dB. Our work can not only be directly used in ground-based application, but also firmly laid the groundwork for future satellite time-frequency dissemination.

Abstract:To address existing issues in conventional correlation method, we propose an improved synchronization method for photon-counting-based underwater optical wireless communication system employing on-off keying modulation.The proposed method jointly estimates the synchronization position, signal intensity, background intensity and data sequence based on the received vector in the period of a frame length. To reduce the complexity for solving the estimation problem, several simplifications are performed based on the characteristics of the data sequence. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves an optical power gain of at least 1 dB over the correlation method at the bit error rate of $10^{-3}$ under dynamic channel.

Abstract:Precision time synchronization between two remote sites is desired in many applications such as global positioning satellite systems, long-baseline interferometry, coherent radar detection and fundamental physics constant measurements. The recently developed frequency dissemination technologies based on optical fiber link have improved the transfer instability to the level of 10−19/day at remote location. Therefore it is possible to keep clock oscillation at remote locations continuously corrected, or to reproduce a “virtual” clock on the remote location. However the initial alignment and the correction of 1 pps timing signal from time to time are still required, besides the highly stabilized clock frequency transfer between distant locations. Here we demonstrate a time synchronization based on an ultra-stable frequency transfer system via 120-km commercial fiber link by transferring an optical frequency comb. Both the phase noise compensation in frequency dissemination and temporal basis alignment in time synchronization were implemented by a feed-forward digital compensation (FFDC) technique. The fractional frequency instability was measured to be 6.18 × 10−20 at 2000 s. The timing deviation of time synchronization was measured to be 0.6 ps in 1500 s. This technique also can be applied in multi-node fiber network topology.

Abstract:Frequency dissemination and synchronization in free space play an important role in global navigation satellite system, radio astronomy, and synthetic aperture radar. In this paper, we demonstrated a portable radio frequency dissemination scheme via free space using microwave antennas. The setup has a good environment adaptability and high dissemination stability. The frequency signal was disseminated at different distances ranging from 10 to 640 m with a fixed 10 Hz locking bandwidth, and the scaling law of dissemination stability on distance and averaging time was discussed. The preliminary extrapolation shows that the dissemination stability may reach 1 x 10(-12)/s in ground-to-satellite synchronization, which far exceeds all present methods, and is worthy for further study. Abstract:Fiber-optic time and frequency synchronization technology demonstrates ultra-high synchronization performance and has been gradually applied in various fields. Based on frequency synchronization, this study addressed the problems of period ambiguity and initial phase uncertainty of the phase signal to realize the coherent transmission of the phase. An absolute phase marking technology was developed based on high-speed digital logic with zero-crossing detection and an optimized control strategy. It can realize picosecond-level absolute phase marking and provide a picosecond-level ultra-low peak-to-peak jitter pulse marking signal to eliminate phase period ambiguity and determine initial phase and transmission delay. Thus, by combining the high-precision phase measurement capability of the synchronized frequency signal and long-distance ambiguity elimination capability of the pulse-per-second signal, a high-precision remote coherent phase transmission over an optical fiber is realized. After frequency synchronization, the peak-to-peak jitter between the local and remote phase-marking signals can be only 3.3 ps within 10,000 s measurement time. The uncertainty of the coherent phase transmission is 2.577 ps. This technology can significantly improve the phase coherence of fiber-optic time and frequency transmission and provide a new approach to achieve peak-to-peak picosecond-level reference phase marking and high-precision fiber-optic remote coherent phase transmission. This demonstrates broad application prospects in coherence fields such as radar networking.

Abstract:High-precision time–frequency is widely used in time measurement, satellite navigation, scientific research, and other fields. With the rapid development of optical clock technology, the fractional frequency instability and uncertainty of optical clock have reached 10−18 orders of magnitude, which is expected to contribute to generating the International Atomic Time and may even be used to redefine the "second" in the future. Therefore, the long-distance transfer of time–frequency signals between optical atomic clocks is of great significance. Free-space optical frequency transfer technology is one of the important technologies for solving the space-based optical clock comparison because of its high transfer precision and easy networking characteristics. In order to solve the long-distance space-based optical clock comparison, this paper investigates a free-space active phase noise compensation method using an Acousto-Optic Modulator (AOM), based on the traditional optical fiber phase noise compensation scheme. This new method is more flexible and scalable than the optical fiber time–frequency transfer technology. The optical frequency transfer over a 64 m free-space link is demonstrated. The fractional frequency transfer instability during free running is 9.50 × 10−16 at 1 s, and 4.44 × 10−16 at 2000 s, and the fractional frequency instability after compensation is 7.10 × 10−17 at 1 s, 3.07 × 10−19 at 2000 s, which is about 1–3 orders of magnitude better than that in free running, and provides a feasible scheme for space-based optical clock comparison.
