Abstract:In this research, we proposed and experimentally verified a compact all-fiber sensor that can measure refractive index (RI) and temperature simultaneously. Two segments of hollow-core fiber (HCF) are connected to the two ends of the four-core fiber (FCF) as a beam splitter and a coupler, and then spliced with two sections of single-mode fibers (lead-in and lead-out SMF), respectively. The two hollow-core fibers can excite the higher-order modes of the four-core fiber and recouple the core modes and higher-order modes into the outgoing single-mode fiber, thereby forming inter-mode interference. The different response sensitivities of two interference dips to RI and temperature manifest that the proposed structure can achieve simultaneous measurement. From the experimental results, it can be seen that the maximum sensitivity of the sensor to RI and temperature is 275.30 nm/RIU and 94.4 pm/degrees C, respectively. When the wavelength resolution is 0.02 nm, the RI and temperature resolutions of the sensor are 7.74 x 10(-5) RIU and 0.335 degrees C. The proposed dual-parameter optical sensor has the advantages of high sensitivities, good repeatability, simple fabrication, and structure. In addition, it has potential application value in multi-parameter simultaneous measurement.

Abstract:Dual parameter detection without cross-sensitivity is a commonly important need but challenging, as most fiber detection components have a single sensitive mechanism. In this article, an optical fiber probe based on a three-beam Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) for temperature and refractive index (RI) measurement was proposed and experimentally realized. Theoretically, such structure has three reflective surfaces, forming three FPIs, and can obtain a hybrid sensing mechanism: wavelength-sensitive to temperature and intensity-sensitive to RI. Experimentally, the chemical etching method was used to form a concave in the fiber tip. Fused together with another section of un-etched fiber, an air bubble can be formed inside the fiber. Then, a cleavage near the bubble can shape the three-beam FPI. Using the fast Fourier Transform, the first-order spatial frequency is corresponding to the air-FPI, and the ratio of the second-order spatial frequency to first-order spatial frequency can describe how many smaller interference periods have been created within one original period due to the cleavage. The test temperature range is 30-40°C with a step of 2°C. The band pass filtering method was used to analyze different frequency components. Experimental results validate that the silica-FP was dominate for temperature sensing, and the average temperature sensitivity was 8.97 pm/°C with repeated linearity over 0.95. The test RI range was 1.3333-1.3908, and average RI sensitivity was 10.05 dB/RIU with repeated linearity over 0.92. Therefore, the proposed structure is a compact and efficient sensing component with hybrid sensitive mechanism that can achieve a temperature-RI dual-parameter measurement.

Abstract:An internal-and-external-cavity Fabry–Pérot interferometer (IECFPI) model was mathematically constructed. Based on the IECFPI configuration, a crosstalk-free fiber optic sensor for simultaneous measurement of refractive index (RI) and temperature was proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The internal cavity was a silica cavity, while the external one consisted of an open cavity and silica cavity. The open cavity was formed by an offset single-mode fiber (SMF) sandwiched between two sections of SMF, and the silica cavity was formed by a well-cleaved SMF. A sensitivity coefficient (SC) matrix of the proposed sensor was used to determine the RI and temperature by monitoring the wavelength shifts of the envelope and fine fringes. The proposed sensor can be used for simultaneous measurement of RI and temperature based on the inverse of the SC matrix. Experimental results demonstrated that the RI sensitivities for the envelope and fine fringes were 1084.9 and 124.2 nm/RIU, respectively. Temperature sensitivities of 3.5 and 9.8 pm/°C were also achieved for the envelope and fine fringes, respectively. The crosstalk between the RI and temperature was thus eliminated. In addition, the proposed sensor has a compact size, simple fabrication, and an all-fiber structure, making it a potential candidate for many applications, such as the food industry and environment monitoring.

Abstract:A Mach-Zehnder interferometer based on single-mode-multimode-thin-core-single-mode fiber structure is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for measuring refractive index and temperature simultaneously. The transmission dips of the sensor will shift when the ambient refractive index and temperature change, so it is possible to measure the refractive index and temperature by monitoring the wavelength shifts of the two transmission dips due to different interference orders. The experimental results show that the sensing sensitivities of refractive index and temperature are -18.1764 nm/RIU and 0.0733 nm/RIU within the refractive index range from 1.3105 to 1.3517 and the temperature range from 25 degrees C to 50 degrees C, respectively. Its cost effectiveness, robustness and easy fabrication will have attractive potential applications in chemical and biological sensing.

Abstract:A sensor on the basis of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of hollow core anti-resonant fiber (HC-ARF) with an alternating distribution of cladding tubes is proposed to realize concurrent detection of refractive index (RI) and the temperature. Two cladding tubes are plated with gold wire and silver layer inside, respectively. The liquid analyte is packed into the core of the fiber, and the silver layer is filled with liquid toluene which has a negative thermo-optical factor, thus forming a two-parameter detection channel for the RI and the temperature. The sensitivity crossover is resolved by using a dual wavelength matrix method. The outcome indicates that the optimum sensitivity of RI detection from 1.4850 to 1.5550 is up to − 55,000 nm/RIU, and the optimum sensitivity of temperature detection between − 20.0 and 40.0°C is up to − 85 nm/°C. The figure of merit (FOM) of 625 RIU −1 can be achieved with RI of 1.5000 and the temperature of 20.0°C. Comparison with other reported sensors demonstrates that our sensor has novel and simple fiber structure, ultrahigh sensitivity, and broad measurement range, which has an extensive prospect of application in dual-parameter detection that provide solid support for sensing area.

Abstract:A miniature fiber-optic sensor fabricated by fuse splicing a section of hollow silica tube between two sections of single-mode fiber is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for simultaneous measurement of the liquid refractive index (RI) and temperature. The sensitivities of RI and temperature are measured by linear fitting, respectively, and corresponding detecting resolutions are obtained by the sensitivity matrix. The different response sensitivities of two dips to RI and temperature manifest that the structure proposed can be used for simultaneous measurement. The experimental evidence indicates that the miniature fiber sensor with advantages of easy fabrication, ultracompactness, and robustness is insensitive to axial strain. Abstract:<p>In this paper, a refractive index (RI) and temperature sensor based on a folded-tapered multimode-no-core (FTMN) fiber structure is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The FTMN has an additional Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI), which is introduced in the folded-tapered multimode (FTM) fiber. And with the inherent multimode interference (MMI) and the previously mentioned MZI as foundation, a composite interference is successfully established. This synthetic composite interference greatly improves the performance of traditional optical fiber RI sensing in the low RI range. The experimental results demonstrate that a maximum sensitivity of 1191.5 nm/RIU within a linear RI ranging from 1.3405 to 1.3497 can be achieved, which is greater than the traditional modal interferometer structure. Furthermore, the temperature sensitivities at interference dips A and B are 0.0648 nm/°C and 0.0598 nm/°C, respectively. By monitoring the wavelength shifts of interference dips A and B, the sensor can simultaneously measure RI and temperature to overcome the temperature induced cross-sensitivity.</p>

Abstract:The majority of biology and chemistry takes place in solution, in which refractive index (RI) and temperature sensing underlie molecular detection and profiling. All-in-fiber integrated devices are uniquely suited to detecting the properties of samples, which allows liquids to flow and react in the fiber cavities. Here we use a single-hole dual-core fiber (SHDCF) based Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) to simultaneously detect the refractive index and temperature of solution, with high sensitivity enhanced by the vernier effect. The inlets and outlets are built by splicing C-shaped fiber and fiber capillary between SHDCF. A detection region inside the microscopic hole of SHDCF obtained after splicing is constructed. Our method offers high sensitivities of 6851.89 nm/RIU and 0.493 nm/degree celsius for RI and temperature in a liquid solution, respectively. Notably, the crosssensitivity of RI and temperature can be eliminated by constructing a transmission matrix. New in-fiber integrated ways of revealing properties of low-volume samples may have extensive potential for applications in the biological and chemical sciences.

Abstract:A novel optical fiber sensor based on cascade anti-resonant reflection waveguide (ARRW) and fiber ring-shaped structure (FRSS) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for simultaneous measurement of refractive index (RI) and temperature. The sensor is very simply fabricated by splicing ARRW and FRSS based on Mach-Zehnder interference (MZI). The FRSS interference dip is sensitive to external RI and temperature changes, whereas the ARRW structure's loss dip is only sensitive to external temperature. As a result, this sensor can be used to measure both RI and temperature simultaneously. The sensor's maximum RI sensitivity is 108.61 nmRIU and its maximum temperature sensitivity is 19 pm C in the experiment. This sensor is a good choice when it is necessary to measure RI and temperature at the same time due to its compact size, high sensitivity, low cost, and good stability.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel and compact optical fiber surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor for the simultaneous measurement of the refractive index (RI) and temperature. The sensor is fabricated by employing the eccentric-core fiber (ECF), which is polished to a V-shaped micro-structure optical fiber (MOF). One side of the MOF is used as the RI sensing channel, and the other side is used as the temperature sensing channel. Two sensing channels are independent without crosstalk. The sensor has high RI sensitivity up to the maximum of 3376 nm/RIU from 1333 to 1.385 RIU, and high-temperature sensitivity up to -2.65 nm/degrees C from 20 degrees C to 60 degrees C. In addition, owing to the few-mode light in the ECF, the full width at half-maximum is smaller than other SPR sensors based on multimode fiber. This sensor will be extremely helpful to improve the RI measurement uncertainty caused by temperature disturbance. (C) 2019 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A compact refractive index sensor is proposed and investigated based on multimode fiber-micro tapered single-mode fiber-multimode fiber (MTSM) structure. The micro tapered single-mode fiber excites the high-order cladding mode and induces a compact size of 2.2 mm. The influence of multimode fiber (MMF) for the interference fringe is studied numerically and verified experimentally. The experimental and simulated results show that the appropriate MMF length is conducive to form a clear interference fringe. At the same time, the results of refractive index test show that the maximal sensitivity reaches 1879.87 nm/RIU under external refractive index of 1.437. Due to the advantages of small size and high sensitivity, the novel fiber sensor has the potential in the application of refractive index sensing. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A double-side polished U-shape plastic optical fiber (POF) based SPR sensor is proposed for measuring the refractive index (RI) and temperature simultaneously. The polished regions are fabricated on two sides of the macrobending regions, and a layer of gold film is deposited on both polished regions. The influences of the side-polish depth and angle on the sensing performance are investigated. The two-parameters sensor can be obtained by coating a layer of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film on one of the gold-film surfaces, and the RI and temperature can be detected by monitoring the resonance peak wavelength changes. A RI sensitivity of 1258 nm/RIU and a temperature sensitivity of –0.596 nm/∘C are achieved in the experiment. The proposed probe has potential applications in the field of environmental monitoring.

Abstract:We have demonstrated a novel scheme for simultaneous measurement of temperature and refractive index by using an exposed core microstructured optical fiber (ECF). The ECF allows for high sensitivity to refractive index due to the small exposed-core, while being supported by a standard fiber diameter cladding making it robust compared to optical microfibers. The sensor combines a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) inscribed into the core of the ECF and a multimode MachZehnder interferometer (MZI). Both the FBG and MZI are sensitive to refractive index (RI) and temperature through a combination of direct access to the evanescent field via the exposed-core, the thermo-optic effect, and thermal expansion. The FBG and MZI respond differently to changes in temperature and RI, thus allowing for the simultaneous measurement of these parameters. In our experiment, RI sensitivities of 5.85 nmRIU and 794 nmRIU, and temperature sensitivities of 8.72 pmC and 57.9 pmC, were obtained for the FBG and MZI respectively. We demonstrate that a transfer matrix approach can be used to simultaneously measure both parameters, solving the problem of temperature sensitivity of RI sensors due to the high thermo-optic coefficient of aqueous samples.

Abstract:A dual-channel optical fiber sensing system for refractive index (RI) measurement with ultra-high sensitivity and large measurement range is proposed and demonstrated by combining a rough measurement sensor and a precise measurement sensor. One sensing channel consists of an optical microfiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI), which works as a RI precise measurement sensor. The microfiber MZI is fabricated on a single mode fiber (SMF) by using a two-step tapering method. The microfiber MZI operating around dispersion turning point (DTP) shows an ultra-high sensitivity of up to 44271 nm/RIU, however, its measurement range is limited to be only 0.0015 owing to the periodic interference spectrum. The other sensing channel contains an SMF-photonic crystal fiber (PCF)-SMF MZI, which works as a RI rough measurement sensor. RI sensitivity of the SMF-PCF-SMF MZI is 143.67 nm/RIU in 1.3317∼1.3710. RI measurement range of the microfiber MZI is expanded by firstly read a rough RI value from the SMF-PCF-SMF MZI and then determine the observation window of the interference spectrum of the microfiber MZI. This proposed sensing scheme solves the trade-off between high sensitivity and large measurement range caused by the periodic interference spectrum, and it is promising in liquid RI-related sensing fields with high requirements of both sensitivity and measurement range.

Abstract:A polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF) sensor for simultaneous measurement of the temperature and refractive index (RI) based on the Mach Zehnder interferometer is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. This fiber sensor is constructed by sandwiching a 20-mm waist-enlarged PMF between two single-mode fibers (SMFs). Using the wavelength shifts of different interference dips and the sensitivity matrix, two external parameters can be measured simultaneously. Experiment results show that the sensitivities to the temperature are 145.6 pm/C and 0.1256 nm/C and the sensitivities to the RI are -35.0502 and -23.3694 nm/RIU for two interference dips, respectively. This fiber sensor is simple and easy to fabricate, has high sensitivity, and can be applied to other fields, such as biological and chemical sensings. Abstract:A sensitivity amplified optical fiber sensor based on Vernier effect by cascaded microfiber Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) is proposed and demonstrated for the simultaneous measurement of refractive index (RI) and temperature. The traditional single mode fiber is tapered into micrometer near the dispersion turning point to constitute MZI, and then cascaded to generate Vernier effect for the sensitivity enhancement. A novel phenomenon that the envelope of Vernier effect shifted in opposite directions decided by the free spectral ranges of the sensing and reference arms is clarified and demonstrated for the first time. Experimental results show that the RI sensitivity can be improved from 944 nm/RIU of single MZI to 18504 nm/RIU of Vernier effect, while the temperature sensitivity can be improved from −0.53 nm/°C of single MZI to 9.49 nm/°C of Vernier effect. Moreover, the proposed sensor with the merits of low hysteresis effect, good repeatability, high stability and good reliability, making it of great potential for biochemical trace detections without temperature-induced cross-sensitivity.

Abstract:A compact and high sensitivity sensor with a fiber-tip structure is proposed and demonstrated for simultaneously liquid refractive index (RI) and temperature sensing. The device is fabricated by inserting a tiny segment of capillary tube between single-mode fibers (SMFs) to form two cascaded Fabry-Perot interferometers (FPIs). The theoretical and experimental results demonstrate that the ambient liquid RI and temperature can be simultaneously determined by the intensity and shift of the resonant wavelength in the reflection spectrum. Our proposed device has the highest RI sensitivity of ~216.37 dB/RIU at the RI value of 1.30; a high spatial resolution owing to its compact size (with dimension <400 μm) makes it promising for high precision bio/chemical sensing applications.

Abstract:A new type of optical refractive-index (RI) sensor is proposed and experimentally demonstrated by using a structure of two single-mode fiber (SMF) Bragg gratings with a multimode fiber (MMF) taper in-between. The loss induced by a mismatch of waveguide structure between SMFs and MMFs is amplified by a tapering process, and is utilized for RI sensing through evanescent field. Experimental results show that the sensor possesses a tailorable sensitivity to the change of external RI and has a good linear response in the simultaneous measurement of external RI and temperature.

Abstract:A simple and robust refractive index (RI) sensor based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer has been demonstrated. A section of optical microfiber drawn from silica fiber is employed as the sensing arm. Because of the evanescent field, a slight change of the ambient RI will lead to the variation of the microfiber propagation constant, which will further change the optical length. In order to compensate the variation of the optical length difference, a tunable optical delay line (ODL) is inserted into the other arm. By measuring the delay of the ODL, the ambient RI can be simply demodulated. A high RI sensitivity of about 7159 mu m/refractive index unit is achieved at microfiber diameter of 2.0 mu m.
