Abstract:A plasmonic structure is proposed to achieve perfect absorber. Numerical simulations indicate that there are two absorption peaks at wavelength 1565nm and 1998nm with absorptivity 99.93% and 99.86%, respectively. Near perfect dual-band absorber is obtained.

Abstract:We present a novel scheme for ultrabroadband and omnidirectional perfect absorbers with compact multilayer film structure. Our proposed device shows an average absorption of similar to 98% over a wide range of wavelengths ranging from 400 to 2000 nm. The ultrabroadband characteristics are achieved with strongly overlapped optical resonances by designing a tandem structure composed of three absorptive materials, while the overall structure features a graded refractive index profile to obtain a wideband antireflection property. In addition to the high efficiency and ultrabroadband absorption, our perfect absorbers exhibit a great angular tolerance up to 60 degrees, which is attributed to not only relatively broad resonances but also negligible propagation phase shifts in ultrathin highly absorbing layers. Lastly, we explore the effect of the number of semiconductor-metal stacks on the performance of the absorber. The presented approach can have tremendous potential for various applications, such as solar-thermal energy harvesting, thermoelectrics, detection, and imaging.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a dual-band metamaterial absorber at normal incidence based on a five-layer metal-insulator-metal (MIM) stacked structure. The designed structure exhibits two peaks with over 95% absorption efficiency in the visible region. The physical mechanism of two absorption peaks is systematically investigated by the anti-symmetric and symmetric modes in the multilayer structure. As demonstrated in the calculation and experiment, two absorption peaks demonstrate well scalability with the change of structure periodicity. We envision this nearly perfect absorber would find great potential in the high performance photovoltaics and thermal emitter devices. Abstract:A multi-resonance structure design of nearly perfect absorber (PA) was proposed based on square patch at microwave frequencies. One-layer square patch metamaterial has an absorption of 99.9%. The multi-layer metamaterials can extend the bandwidth of nearly perfect absorber. By stacking several such structural layers with different geometrical dimensions, the bandwidth of this strong absorption can be effectively enhanced due to the hybridization of magnetic polarizations in different layers. Numerical simulations reveal that the multi-layer metamaterials with different resonance frequencies can extend the absorption bandwidth. The full bandwidth at half-maximum (FWHM) bandwidth is improved to 2GHz with 4-layers square patch structure. The simulated and experimental results are coincided well. The mechanism of nearly perfect absorption is explained in detail.
Dual broadband near-infrared perfect absorber based on a hybrid plasmonic-photonic microstructure.

Abstract:High performance light absorber with a broad bandwidth is particularly desirable for near-infrared photodetection and optical interconnects. Here we demonstrate a dual broadband perfect absorber in the near-infrared regime, which is based on a hybrid plasmonic-photonic microstructure. Such a microstructure is fabricated by self-assembling a monolayer colloidal crystal on an optically opaque metal film followed by depositing a thin metallic half-shell on the top of the colloidal particles. Both experimental and numerical simulation results show that the simply designed absorbers have dual broadband with absorption exceeding 90% in the near-infrared region with the absorption bands being scalable by tuning the size of the colloidal particles. Moreover, the absorption efficiency shows an extremely slight dispersion for the incident angles up to 50 degrees, benefit from the high symmetry as well as the highly modulated plasmonic microstructures that lead to a weak polarization dependence of these two absorption bands. The relative ease of growing high-quality colloidal crystals and the low cost of fabricating such plasmonic-photonic microstructures with high reproducibility could promise applicability of the light absorber in the field of photodetectors, thermal emitters and photovoltaics. Abstract:An approach for designing a wide-angle perfect absorber at infrared frequencies is proposed. The technique is based on a perfectly impedance-matched sheet (PIMS) formed by plasmonic nanostructure. It is shown that the effective impedance is more physical meaningful and beneficial than effective medium in describing the electromagnetic properties of metamaterial absorber. As a specific implementation of this technique, a wide-angle polarization-independent dual-band absorber is numerically demonstrated at frequencies of 100THz and 280THz with absorption close to 100% simultaneously. Circuit models are utilized to describe the impedance property of localized plasmon modes and the results show good agreement with that retrieved from reflection coefficient at normal incidence.

Abstract:Metamaterials are widely studied in bio-photonics because of their flexible and tunable resonance wavelengths in the near-infrared region and their particular relevance to biological tissues. In this paper, we propose for the first time a perfect absorber that is switchable between triple-band and dual-band absorption. The narrowband metamaterial perfect absorber has a conventional metal–dielectric–metal structure, which consists of an array of silver disks, a silica dielectric layer and a gold substrate. Its working performance is mainly determined by the height, radius and period of the top silver disks. By adjusting these parameters, the perfect absorber can be switched between triple-band and dual-band absorption with the peaks showing close to 100% absorbance. This makes it possible to use it as a multifunctional absorber in various applications, such as filters and sensors.

Abstract:We present a simple design for an ultra-thin dual-band polarization-insensitive and wide-angle perfect metamaterial absorber (PMMA) based on a single circular sector resonator structure (CSRS). Both simulation and experimental results reveal that two resonance peaks with average absorption above 99% can be achieved. The dual-band PMMA is ultra-thin with total thickness of 0.5 mm, which is <l/38 with respect to the operation frequencies. The surface electric field and current distributions of the unit-cell structure reveal the physical picture of the dual-band absorption. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the PMMA could retain high absorption level at large angles of polarization and incidence for both transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes. Furthermore, the absorption properties of the PMMA can be adjusted by varying the geometric parameters of the unit-cell structure.

Abstract:We propose a sub-wavelength range-based dual-band tunable ideal terahertz metamaterial perfect absorber. The absorber structure consists of three main layers, with the absorber layer consisting of a metal I-shaped structure. By simulating the incident wave absorbance of the structure, we found that the structure has more than 99% absorption peaks in both bands. In addition, we have investigated the relationship between structural absorbance and the structural geometrical parameters. We have studied the relationship between the thickness of the metal absorber layer hb and the absorbance of the metamaterial structure in the 4–14 THz band. Secondly, we have studied the relationship between the thickness of the SiO2 dielectric layer and structural absorbance. Afterwards, we have studied the relationship between the incident angle of the incident electromagnetic wave and structural absorbance. Finally, we have studied the relationship between the length of the metal structure and structural absorbance. The structure can be effectively used for detectors, thermal emitters, terahertz imaging and detection.

Abstract:This paper proposes a perfect metamaterial absorber based on a dielectric−dielectric−metal structure, which realizes ultra-narrowband dual-band absorption in the near-infrared band. The maximum Q factor is 484. The physical mechanism that causes resonance is hybrid coupling between magnetic polaritons resonance and plasmon resonance. At the same time, the research results show that the intensity of magnetic polaritons resonance is much greater than the intensity of the plasmon resonance. By changing the structural parameters and the incident angle of the light source, it is proven that the absorber is tunable, and the working angle tolerance is 15°. In addition, the sensitivity and figure of merit when used as a refractive index sensor are also analyzed. This design provides a new idea for the design of high-Q optical devices, which can be applied to photon detection, spectral sensing, and other high-Q multispectral fields.

Perfect Metamaterial Absorber with Dual Bands

Abstract:In this paper, we present the design, simulation, and measurement of a dual-band metameterial absorber in the microwave region. Simulated and experimental results show that the absorber has two perfect absorption points near 11.15 GHz and 16.01 GHz. Absorption under different polarizations of incident EM waves are measured with magnitude of over 97% at low-frequency peak and 99% at high-frequency peak respectively. Current distribution at the dual absorptive peaks is also given to study the physical mechanism of power loss. Moreover, it is verified by experiment that the absorpiton of this kind of metamaterial absorber remain over 90% at the low-frequency peak and 92% at the high-frequency peak with wide incident angles ranging from 0 degrees to 60 degrees for both transverse electric wave and transverse magnetic wave.

Abstract:We propose a simple structure of a metamaterial (MM) to achieve near-perfect narrowband absorption. This MM utilizes both a plasmonic antenna and its complimentary structure for trapping electromagnetic fields, without the use of a complete ground plate compared to conventional designs. The simple design opens a new possibility of engineering perfect absorbers that can be easily fabricated, and thus many potential applications in mid-infrared include thermal imaging, energy harvesting, localized biological sensing, optical tweezers, and laser beam shaping.

Abstract:We numerically and experimentally demonstrated a polarization insensitive dual-band metamaterial perfect absorber working in wide incident angles based on the two magnetic Mie resonances of a single dielectric “atom” with simple structure. Two absorption bands with simulated absorptivity of 99% and 96%, experimental absorptivity of 97% and 94% at 8.45 and 11.97 GHz were achieved due to the simultaneous magnetic and electric resonances in dielectric “atom” and copper plate. Mie resonances of dielectric “atom” provide a simple way to design metamaterial perfect absorbers with high symmetry.

Abstract:A novel design of double resonant plasmonic nanoantennas is proposed. Numerical simulations using finite-difference time-domain method show that the designed asymmetric H-shaped bowtie antenna can provide double resonances with a common electromagnetic hot spot in the antenna gap. These resonant modes are due to the plasmon hybridization in the asymmetric structure. In addition, a dual-narrow-band perfect absorber is achieved, consisting of the asymmetric structure positioned at a well-specified distance above a metal plane with a silica spacer layer. A broadband plasmonic absorber covering from 300nm to 22 µm with over 95% absorption is also reported.

Abstract:Mid-infrared (IR) perfect absorbers have great potential in practical applications such as biomedical sensing and thermal energy and have been successfully demonstrated in a number of plasmonic metallic nanostructures. However, all the experimental realizations of perfect absorbers are strongly dependent on nanofabrication techniques, which usually require high costs and a long time to fabricate a wafer scale device. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate a wafer scale, polarization independent, wide angle, and dual-band IR perfect absorber. By fabricating double "E"-shaped metallic structures on a ZnSe coated gold film, a dual-band metamaterial absorber has been uniformly realized on a 2'' silicon wafer. Two absorption peaks have been realized at 18 and 27 THz, which are well consistent with the designs. We believe that our research will boost the applications of metamaterial perfect absorbers.

Abstract:Near perfect infrared light absorption at multi-spectral wavelengths has been experimentally demonstrated by using multiplexed metal square plasmon resonance structures. Optical power absorption over 95% has been observed in dual-band metamaterial absorbers at two separate wavelengths and optical power absorption over 92.5% has been observed in triple-band metamaterial absorbers at three separate wavelengths. The peak absorption wavelengths are primarily determined by the sizes of the metal squares in the multiplexed structures. Electrical field distributions in the middle of the dielectric spacer layer were calculated at the peak absorption wavelengths. It is shown that strong light absorption corresponds to the local quadrupole plasmon resonance modes in the metamaterial structures.

Abstract:An infrared (IR) absorber based on the metamaterial structure is proposed theoretically and numerically. The near-unity absorption can be achieved at a certain wavelength by optimizing geometrical parameters of the structure. Moreover, we can switch a single-band absorber to dual-band absorber by decreasing the thickness of top metallic layer which is perforated by an air-filled ribbon. At the same time, we confirm that the mechanism of this two absorption bands is completely different. The simultaneous effects of the magnetic resonance and the cavity resonance occur at our proposed structure. Besides according to the control of polarization direction, the absorption peaks occur at the two constant wavelengths, and the superposed value of this two absorption peaks is always close to a constant. Based on this phenomenon, a simple dual-band absorber is designed when the thickness of top shaped metallic film is relatively large. The cavity response is not the existence in this condition. These results that we obtain may provide some promising applications such as sensors, thermal imagers, and IR detectors.

Abstract:A dual band metamaterial absorber composed of dielectric and metallic atoms with high symmetry was numerically designed and experimentally verified. Due to simultaneously generated electric and magnetic resonances of both plasmon and Mie resonators, two absorption peaks with near unity absorptivity were obtained at 9.45 and 9.80 GHz. The loss of the electromagnetic wave at the first resonance frequency was mainly caused by ohmic loss based on plasmon resonance. For the second absorption peak resonance frequency, the incident wave was trapped inside the dielectric cube and the main loss of the electromagnetic wave was caused by dielectric loss based on Mie resonance. Most of the proposed dual band metamaterial absorbers were sensitive to the polarization direction hindering its potential applications in scientific and technological areas. Combing both plasmon and Mie resonances provides a new and simple way to build dual band isotropic metamaterial perfect absorbers eliminating polarization effect.

Abstract:Background: In recent decades, numerous researchers have been keenly interested in plasmonic absorbers due to their efficiency in a variety of applications such as solar cells. This is because the surface plasmons formed at the interface between metal and insulators interact strongly with light, thereby augmenting electromagnetic (EM) waves. In most cases, plasmonic absorbers featuring metal-insulated-metal structure (MIM) are favored for their robust absorption rates, straightforward fabrication process, minuscule size, and portability. ‌Methods: This paper proposes a tunable plasmonic perfect absorber (PPA) based on graphene and two metal-insulator substructure within the 28-60 μm wavelength range. This device is simulated by 3D finite element analysis using CST software. Also, in our proposed structure, instead of using a single micro-blade, two micro-blades are arranged opposite of each other in the absorber structure through which the electric field is locally strengthened and a sharper resonance peak with greater amplitude is obtained. ‌Results: Simulation results demonstrate that a resonance peak is observable in the absorption spectrum of the structure and that this peak can be shifted between 30μm and 40μm by applying a gate bias voltage to the graphene nanolayer without modification of the structure's dimensions. Conclusion: The features of this absorber make it suitable for sensor applications, which will be further explored in future research. We also investigated the influence of dimensions on absorption to take into account the allowable tolerances and sensitivities associated with its fabrication. Furthermore, we proposed a structure that can enhance absorber performance in the future.

Abstract:In this paper, a dual-band perfect absorber, composed of a periodically patterned elliptical nanodisk graphene structure and a metal ground plane spaced by a thin SiO(2) dielectric layer, is proposed and investigated. Numerical results reveal that the absorption spectrum of the graphene-based structure displays two perfect absorption peaks in the terahertz band, corresponding to the absorption value of 99% at 35μm and 97%at 59μm, respectively. And the resonance frequency of the absorber can be tunned by controlling the Fermi level of graphene layer. Further more, it is insensitive to the polarization and remains very high over a wide angular range of incidence around ±60(0). Compared with the previous graphene dual-band perfect absorption, our absorber only has one shape which can greatly simplify the manufacturing process.

Abstract:We report a perfect absorber metallic hole array with wide-angle near unity absorbance in the visible regime. The periodicity of the structure enables excitation of surface-plasmon polaritons and results in a splitting of the absorbing peaks. An analytical formalism based on perturbation theory provides results in good agreement with experimental data and shows how the absorption peak can be tuned with hole geometry, periodicity, and material parameters. Being extendable to more complex hybrid structures, our result is important for the development of photon harvesting devices and thermal emitters.
