Abstract:Structural modifications in two novel Dy-6 clusters, [DY6(mu(3)-OH)(4)(mu(2)-OH)(2)(L-1)(8)(H2O)(6)](CF3SO3)(4)center dot 6H(2)O (1) and [Dy6Na2(L-2)(4)(O-2)(PhCOO)(10)(H2O2] (2), enhances their single-molecule magnet (SMM) performance. Of particular interest is that these two compounds exhibit analogous Dy-6 cores via coupling Dy-3 units and possess identical coordination geometries with different distortions. Alternating-current magnetic susceptibility measurements revealed that compound 1 displayed obvious SMM behavior under a zero applied direct current (dc) field. Fitting the magnetic data of compound 1 gives an effective energy barrier to magnetization reversal, (U-eff, of 19.8 K, whereas only slow relaxation is observed for compound 2. This significant discrepancy is mainly due to the extremely distorted coordination geometries of the Dy-III ions for compound 2, which introduce stronger quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM). Structures and Single-Molecule Magnet Behavior of Dy3 and Dy4 Clusters Constructed by Different Dysprosium(III) Salts

Abstract:Using the Schiff base ligand H2L-pyra (N'-(2-hydroxybenzoyl)pyrazine-2-carbohydrazonamide) with multiple dentate sites, the trinuclear DyIII-based complex [Dy3(HL-pyra)2(L-pyra)2(CH3COO)3]·2H2O (1) was synthesized. By analyzing the fragmented assembly process and fine-tuning the bridging anions, complex [Dy4(HL-pyra)2(L-pyra)4(NO3)2(H2O)2]·8H2O (2) with different nuclear numbers was successfully synthesized. Magnetic studies demonstrated that 1 did not exhibit magnetic relaxation behavior under the external field; however, 2 exhibited zero-field single-molecule magnetic relaxation behavior with an effective energy barrier (Ueff) of 197.44 K. This is attributed to the improved anisotropy of the single ion after the normalization of the crystal structure, thus realizing the molecular magnetic switching. Moreover, magnetic dilution analysis of 2 demonstrated that the weak magnetic interaction between metal ions inhibited the occurrence of quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM), resulting in high-performance single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior. The reasons for the magnetic difference between these two complexes were analyzed using ab initio calculation and magneto-structural correlations. This study provides a reasonable prediction of the ideal configuration of the approximately parallelogram DyIII-based SMMs, thus offering an effective approach for synthesizing Dy4 complexes with excellent properties.

Abstract:By using a polydentate Schiff base ligand (H3L), in this paper, a new Dy(III)-based cluster, namely [Dy4(HL)4(CH3O)4]•4CH3OH (1), was successfully obtained and further characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal structure measurement suggests that cluster 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c and the four center Dy(III) ions of cluster 1 displays a tetrahedral arrangement. The magnetic study reveals that cluster 1 shows remarkable single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior under zero dc filed (ΔE/kB = 54.6 K, and τ0 = 6.43 × 10−7 s).

Abstract:Precise control of the crystal field and local symmetry around the paramagnetic spin center is crucial for the design and synthesis of single-molecule magnets (SMMs). Herein, three mononuclear Dy(III)-based complexes, ([Dy(LN6)(CH3COO)2](BPh4)(CH2Cl2) (1), [Dy(LN6)(2,6-Cl-4-NO2-PhO)(H2O)2]2(PF6)2(H2O)(2,6-Cl-4-NO2-PhO)2 (2) and [Dy(LN6)(2,6-Cl-4-NO2-PhO)2](BPh4)(CH2Cl2)2 (3) (LN6 = N6-hexagonal plane accomplished by a neutral Schiff base ligand formed from 2,6-diacetylpyridine and ethylenediamine), are successfully isolated. In these complexes, the Dy(III) centers are coordinated with six neutral N atoms from the nonrigid equatorial ligand, while different oxygen-bearing ligands are arranged at the axial positions of the central ions through a gradual regularization of the axial ligands. As a result, the Dy(III) ions in three complexes exhibit various coordination geometries, forming ten-coordinate tetradecahedron for 1, nine-coordinate muffin configuration for 2 and distortedly eight-coordinate hexagonal bipyramid for 3. Magnetic studies reveal that all complexes perform no SIM behaviour under zero dc field, due to the predominant quantum tunneling of the magnetizations (QTM) which can be effectively suppressed by the additional dc fields. Experiments, coupled with theoretical calculations demonstrate that varying local symmetries and coordination geometries are synergistically responsible for the disparities of the QTM and uniaxial anisotropy, resulting in notably different magnetic properties.

Herein, we report the assembly ofthree novel Dy-III clusters, where in situ ligand transformation-assistedassembly offered a system with high SMM performance successfully.These clusters, [Dy-6(bepho)(3)(NO3)(6)(CH3OH)(3)(H2O)(3)]center dot 5CH(3)OH center dot CH3CN center dot 2H(2)O (1), [Dy-4(bepho)(2)(H(3)epho)(2) (CH3OH)(2)]center dot 2CH(3)OH (2), and [Dy-5(eehz)(3)(eqzl)(mu-CH3O)(mu(3)-CH3O)(2)(mu(4)-O)(CH3OH)]center dot 2CH(3)OH (3), were all assembled from 3-ethoxysalicylidene terminal-decoratedacylhydrazones. H(4)bepho, H(5)epho, H(3)eehz, and Heqzl represent N,N '-bis(3-ethoxysalicylicdene)pyridine-2,6-dicarbohydrazide N-oxide, N-(3-ethoxysalicylidene)pyridine-2,6-dicarbohydrazide N-oxide, N-(3-ethoxysalicylicdene)-2-(3-ethoxysalicylideneamino)benzohydrazide,and 3-(3-ethoxysalicylicdeneamino)quinazolinone, respectively. Cluster 1 is built by H(4)bepho directly, showing a hexanuclearzig-zag chain structure, while for 2 and 3, their original ligands all undergo unprecedented in situ transformationsduring the assembly. H(5)epho featuring asymmetric chelatingarms and Heqzl bearing the quinazolinone parent are formed in 2 and 3, respectively, and participate in theassembly of clusters along with original ligands. In 2, H(4)bepho and H(5)epho construct a quasi-linear{Dy-4} topology. A unique pentanuclear core of 3 is assembled by H(3)eehz and Heqzl. It consists of a [Dy-4] tetrahedron and a [Dy-3] triangle unit sharingan edge. Clusters 1-3 all show zero-fieldSMM behaviors, and 2 displays two distinct relaxationprocesses. Strikingly, the quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM)effect in 3 might be suppressed by intramolecular magneticinteractions associated with its unique cluster topology. The zero-fieldenergy barrier (U (eff)) of 3 reaches up to 211.3 K, which is among the high values for all polynuclearLn-SMM species and also the second largest one in the {Ln(5)}-SMM family. Three Dy clusters have beenassembled by 3-ethoxysalicylideneterminal-decorated acylhydrazone ligands, where in situ ligand transformation-assistedassembly offered a {Dy-5}-SMM with a zero-field high energybarrier of 211.3 K.
Two Pairs of Homochiral Parallelogram-like Dy4 Cluster Complexes with Strong Magneto-Optical Properties

Abstract:Two pairs of homochiral Dy(III) tetranuclear cluster complexes derived from (+)/(-)-3-trifluoroacetyl camphor (D-Htfc/L-Htfc), [Dy4(OH)2(L1)4(D-tfc)2(DMF)2]·4DMF (D-1) [H2L1 = (E)-2-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylideneamino)phenol)]/[Dy4(OH)2(L1)4(L-tfc)2(DMF)2]·4DMF (L-1) and [Dy4(OH)2(L2)4(D-tfc)2(DMF)2]·2H2O·3MeCN (D-2) [H2L2 = (E)-3-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylideneamino)naphthalen-2-ol]/[Dy4(OH)2(L2)4(L-tfc)2(DMF)2]·2H2O·3MeCN (L-2), were synthesized at room temperature, which have a Dy4 parallelogram-like core. The magnetic studies revealed that D-1 exhibits single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior under zero dc magnetic field, and its magnetic relaxation has a distinct Raman process in addition to the Orbach process, with the Ueff/k value of 57.5 K and the C value of 28.27 s-1K-2.14; while D-2 displays dual magnetic relaxation behavior at 0 Oe field, with the Ueff/k value 114.8 K for the slow relaxation process (SR) and the C value of 10.656 s-1K-5.80 for the fast relaxation process (FR), respectively. Theoretical calculations indicated that the conjugated groups (phenyl vs naphthyl) of the Schiff base bridging ligands (H2L1 and H2L2) significantly affect the intramolecular magnetic interactions between the Dy3+ ions and ultimately lead to different relaxations. Furthermore, magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) measurements showed that these two pairs of Dy4 enantiomers exhibit strong room temperature magneto-optical Faraday effects; notably, increasing the conjugated group on the Schiff base bridging ligand is beneficial to enhancing the magneto-optical Faraday effects.
Tuning Magnetic Anisotropy Via Terminal Ligands along the DyDy Orientation in Novel Centrosymmetric [dy2] Single Molecule Magnets.

Abstract:Four DyIII complexes, [Dy2(NO3)4(L)2(H2O)2]·2MeCN (1), [Dy2(NO3)4(L)2(H2O)2]·2(NO3)·DMBD·2MeOH (2), [Dy2(NO3)4(L)2(TPO)2]·2MeCN (3) and [Dy2(L')6(H2O)2]·4MeCN (4), were elaborately synthesized, structurally characterized and magnetically investigated (HL = 2,6-dimethoxyphenol, HL' = 4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxybenzaldehyde, DMBD = 1,1'-dimethyl-[4,4'-bipyridine]-1,1'-diium and TPO = phosphine triphenyl oxide). In 1-3, the nearly planar molecular structures consisting of two DyIII ions and two L ligands are almost perpendicular to four nitrate ligands, which provides an opportunity to introduce auxiliary ligands (H2O or TPO) at the terminal position along the DyDy orientation of [Dy2]. The slightly discrepant coordination environment around the DyIII ion with different terminal ligands plays a key role in tuning the magnetic anisotropy, and further strongly affects the magnetic properties of 1-4. The magnetic studies reveal that they all behave as single-molecule magnets (SMMs) at zero dc field with ferromagnetic dipole-dipole interaction between DyIII ions. The dynamic magnetic investigations give the energy barriers of 107.5 (1), 127.1 (2), 168.7 (3) and 251.9 K (4), respectively. The magnetic axis orientation of the ground state gradually verges on the Dy-Oaux bond from 1 to 4, leading to the stronger uniaxial anisotropy of DyIII ions and better SMM properties of 3 and 4. In addition, complexes 3 and 4 possess higher energy barriers than reported dinuclear DyIII-SMMs also constructed from HL or HL' with β-diketone. It is believed that the ligands coordinating to the DyIII ion at both terminals of the DyDy linkage improve the SMM properties of dinuclear DyIII complexes. This design may provide a new strategy for obtaining dinuclear DyIII-based SMMs.
Substitution Effects Regulate the Formation of Butterfly-Shaped Tetranuclear Dy(III) Cluster and Dy-Based Hydrogen-Bonded Helix Frameworks: Structure and Magnetic Properties

Abstract:The generation of two types of complexes with different topological connections and completely different structural types merely via the substitution effect is extremely rare, especially for -CH3 and -C2H5 substituents with similar physical and chemical properties. Herein, we used 3-methoxysalicylaldehyde, 1,2-cyclohexanediamine, and Dy(NO3)3·6H2O to react under solvothermal conditions (CH3OH:CH3CN = 1:1) at 80 °C to obtain the butterfly-shaped tetranuclear DyIII cluster [Dy4(L1)4(μ3-O)2(NO3)2] (Dy4, H2L1 = 6,6'-((1E,1'E)-(cyclohexane-1,3-diylbis(azanylylidene))bis(methanylylidene))bis(2-methoxyphenol)). The ligand H2L1 was obtained by the Schiff base in situ reaction of 3-methoxysalicylaldehyde and 1,2-cyclohexanediamine. In the Dy4 structure, (L1)2- has two different coordination modes: μ2-η1:η2:η1:η1 and μ4-η1:η2:η1:η1:η2:η1. The four DyIII ions are in two coordination environments: N2O6 (Dy1) and O9 (Dy2). The magnetic testing of cluster Dy4 without the addition of an external field revealed that it exhibited a clear frequency-dependent behavior. We changed 3-methoxysalicylaldehyde to 3-ethoxysalicylaldehyde and obtained one case of a hydrogen-bonded helix framework, [DyL2(NO3)3]n·2CH3CN (Dy-HHFs, H2L2 = 6,6'-((1E,1'E)-(cyclohexane-1,3-diylbis(azanylylidene))bis(methanylylidene))bis(2-ethoxyphenol)), under the same reaction conditions. The ligand H2L2 was formed by the Schiff base in situ reaction of 3-ethoxysalicylaldehyde and 1,2-cyclohexanediamine. All DyIII ions in the Dy-HHFs structure are in the same coordination environment (O9). The twisted S-shaped (L2)2- ligand is linked by a Dy(III) ion to form a spiral chain. The spiral chain is one of the independent units that is interconnected to form Dy-HHFs through three strong hydrogen-bonding interactions. Magnetic studies show that Dy-HHFs exhibits single-ion-magnet behavior (Ueff = 68.59 K and τ0 = 1.10 × 10-7 s, 0 Oe DC field; Ueff = 131.5 K and τ0 = 1.22 × 10-7 s, 800 Oe DC field). Ab initio calculations were performed to interpret the dynamic magnetic performance of Dy-HHFs, and a satisfactory consistency between theory and experiment exists.
Anion-Perturbed Magnetic Slow Relaxation In Planar {Dy-4} Clusters

Abstract:Two planar tetranuclear dysprosium(III) complexes, [DY4(mu(3)-OH)(2)-(hmmpH)(2)(hMMP)(2)(Cl)(4) center dot 3MeCN center dot MeOH (1) and [DY4(mu(3)-OH)(2)-(hmmpH)(2)(hMMP)(2)(N-3)(4)] center dot 4MeOH (2) {hmmpH(2) = 2-[(2-hydroxyethylimino)methyl]-6-methoxyphenol}, which exhibit an anion-dependent magnetic slow relaxation behavior, have been synthesized by in situ condensation of o-vanillin and 2-aminoethanol. The higher energy barrier observed in 2 could be the result of a more favorable crystal field and/or orientations of single-ion easy axes of magnetization of the Dy-III ions.
Synthesis, Structures, and Single-Molecule Magnetic Properties of Three Dy-2 Complexes

Abstract:To explore the influences of the subtle structural variations in the ligand backbones on the single-molecule magnetic properties of dinuclear dysprosium(III) complexes, three ligands-H2L1 (H2L1=N-1,N-3-bis(salicylaldehyde)diethylenetriamine), H2L2 (H2L2=N-1,N-3-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)diethylenetriamine), and H2L3 (H2L3=N-1,N-3-bis(5-chlorosalicyladehyde)diethylenetriamine)-were synthesized and employed to prepare the expected dinuclear dysprosium(III) complexes. The three ligands differ in terms of the substituents at the benzene rings of the salicylaldehyde moieties. The reactions of Dy(NO3)(3) . 6 H2O, pivalic acid, and the ligands H2L1, H2L2, and H2L3 generated complexes with the formulae [Dy-2(L-1)(2)(piv)(2)] (1), [Dy-2(L-2)(2)(piv)(2)] (2), and [Dy-2(L-3)(2)(piv)(2)] . 2 MeCN (3), respectively. The purposeful attachment of the functional groups with varied sizes at the benzene rings of the salicylaldehyde backbones resulted in slight differences in the Dy-O-Dy bond angles and the Dy ... Dy bond lengths in 1-3; consequently, the three complexes exhibited distinct magnetic properties. They all showed slow magnetization relaxation with energy barriers of 40.32 (1), 31.67 (2), and 33.53 K (3). Complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) calculations were performed on complexes 1-3 to rationalize the slight discrepancy observed in the magnetic behavior. The calculated results satisfactorily explained the experimental outcomes.
Half-Sandwich Complexes of Dy(III): A Janus-Motif with Facile Tunability of Magnetism.

Abstract:Three half-sandwich organometallics [(Cp-R)Dy(DBM)(2)(THF)]center dot solvent [Cp-R = Cp* (1Dy, Cp* = C5Me5), Cp-4PrPh (2Dy, Cp-4PrPh = C5Pr4Ph), Cp' (3Dy, Cp' = C5Me4TMS, solvent = THF), DBM- = dibenzoylmethanoate anion, THF = tetrahydrofuran, TMS = trimethylsilyl] with a Janus structural motif, where the ligands of DBM- and [Cp-R](-) are widely used in Dy-III/beta-diketonate and Ln(III)/cyclopentadienyl systems, were synthesized, structurally and magnetically characterized, and theoretically investigated. Single-crystal structural analysis reveals that the three complexes crystallize in the same space group P2(1/c). All the molecules display slow magnetic relaxation in the absence of an applied magnetic field, and the magnetic hysteresis loops of 2Dy and 3Dy can be observed under a magnetic field sweep rate of 10 Oe/s, indicating all three complexes are single-ion magnets (SIMs). The modifications of the Cp-ring lead to the distinct increment of the energy barrier from 46 K (1Dy) to 76 K (2Dy) to 320 K (3Dy). Ab initio calculations show that the ground Kramers doublet is strongly axial with gz approaching the value of 20 expected for the pure M-J = +/- 15/2 state, and the magnetic anisotropy axes for three complexes share a similar orientation which is perpendicular to the molecular pseudosymmetric axis. Electrostatic analyses confirm the magnetic anisotropy orientations and reveal that proper charge distribution of the coordination sphere (including the first and second) around Dy-III ion enhances the magnetic anisotropy. Further investigation of the relaxation mechanisms suggests the energy barrier should be carefully used to evaluate single-ion magnets if Raman process is dominant in the low temperature range.
Magnetic 3d–4f Chiral Clusters Showing Multimetal Site Magneto-Chiral Dichroism

Abstract:Here, we report the molecular self-assembly of hydroxido-bridged {Ln5Ni6} ((Ln3+ = Dy3+, Y3+) metal clusters by the reaction of enantiopure chiral ligands, namely, (R/S)-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzyl)-serine), with NiII and LnIII precursors. Single-crystal diffraction analysis reveals that these compounds are isostructural sandwich-like 3d-4f heterometallic clusters showing helical chirality. Direct current magnetic measurements on {Dy5Ni6} indicates ferromagnetic coupling between DyIII and NiII centers, whereas those on {Y5Ni6} denote that the NiII centers are antiferromagnetically coupled and/or magnetically anisotropic. Magneto-chiral dichroism (MChD) measurements on {Dy5Ni6} and its comparison to that of {Y5Ni6} provide the first experimental observation of intense multimetal site MChD signals in the visible-near-infrared region. Moreover, the comparison of MChD with natural and magnetic circular dichroism spectra unambiguously demonstrate for the first time that the MChD signals associated with the NiII d-d transitions are mostly driven by natural optical activity and those associated with the DyIII f-f transitions are driven by magnetic optical activity.

Abstract:Three dinuclear dysprosium(III) complexes, [Dy2L2(O2CPh)(2)].2 MeOH (1), [Dy2L2{(2-NO2)O2CPh}(2)] (2), and [Dy2L2{(2-OH)O2CPh}(2)].MeOH.MeCN (3) (H2L=N-1,N-3-bis(4-chlorosalicyladehyde)diethylenetriamine), have been synthesized and structurally characterized. Complexes 1-3 possess similar Ln(2) cores and differ in substituents at the benzyl rings of benzoates. Direct current (dc) magnetic susceptibility studies in the 2-300 K range showed weak antiferromagnetic interactions between two dysprosium(III) ions in 1-3. The alternating current (ac) magnetic susceptibility measurements indicated that they all exhibited SMM behavior. The strategic attachment of the -NO2 group (in 2) and the -OH functionality (in 3) on the skeleton of the benzoic acid led to subtle variations of the bond lengths and bond angles in the coordination environments of the central dysprosium(III) ions, consequently resulting in the enhancement of the energy barriers for 2 and 3. Complete-active-space self-consistent field (CASSCF) calculations were employed to rationalize the experimental outcomes. Theoretical calculations confirm the existence of antiferromagnetic interactions in 1-3, and the calculated dc magnetic susceptibility data agree well with those obtained experimentally. The computational results reveal more axial g tensors, as well as higher first excited Kramers doublets in 2 and 3; thus resulting in higher energy barriers in compounds 2 and 3.

Abstract:Three new mononuclear Dy(III) compounds with a Schiff base ligand (H2L = N,N′-bis(2-hydroxy-5-methyl-3-formylbenzyl)-N,N′-bis-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)ethylenediamine) and different β-diketonate co-ligands have been synthesized: [Dy(L)(tffb)] (1, tffb = 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(2-furyl)-1,3-butanedione), [Dy(L)(fbta)] (2, fbta = 3-(4-fluorobenzoyl)-1,1,1-trifluoroacetone), and [Dy(L)(tta)] (3, tta = thenoyltrifluoroacetone). Compounds 1–3 exhibit distorted N4O4 trigonal dodecahedron configurations with different coordination substituents leading to various axial Dy–O bond lengths and O–Dy–O bond angles. The magnetization dynamics of compounds 1–3 are apparently different. Compound 1, showing the best single-molecule magnet (SMM) properties here, has the longest τQTM (0.357 × 10–2 s in theory vs 0.134 × 10–2 s in experiment) and an experimentally fitted U eff of 94.76 K under a zero dc field. In 2 and 3, no reasonable U eff could be fitted from the experimental data as no exponential dependence of τ on temperature is observed. This implies that the contribution of the Orbach pathway of 2 and 3 is even weaker than that of the Raman pathway. Both the accurate ab initio extraction and point charge electrostatic model show that 1 has the largest value of diagonal crystal field parameters, B 2 0. This work verifies that the electronic structure of 1 is more suitable for SMM than 2 and 3.

Abstract:We report herein the synthesis of three dinuclear Dy III helicates, [Dy III 2 (H 2 L R ) 3 ](NO 3 ) 3 & sdot; xH 2 O ( 1 -3, R = Me, Cl, Br), by reacting Dy(NO 3 ) 3 & sdot; 5H 2 O and three closely related Schiff bases derived from 3-Hydroxy-2-naphthohydrazide and three different 2,6-diformylphenols. Single crystal X-ray structural characterization revealed that all these complexes are isostructural and composed of complex cations of general formula [Dy III 2 (H 2 L R ) 3 ] 3+ , in which three monoanionic Schiff base ligands are wrapped around two Dy III centers, leading to triple-stranded helical structures. Notably, the configuration of monoanionic H 2 L R ligands imparts a coordination-induced chirality on individual complex cation, and the presence of equivalent amounts of enantiopure Lambda and Delta complex cations made the solid products as racemic mixtures, crystalizing in the centrosymmetrical space groups. Variabletemperature magnetic susceptibility measurements have been performed in the temperature range 2 - 300 K for a representative complex 2 , and AC susceptibility studies further disclose the slow relaxation of magnetization in 2 , characteristics for single-molecule magnets.

Abstract:Four chair-like hexanuclear Fe-Ln complexes containing mixed organic ligands, namely, [Fe(4)Ln(2){(py)(2)CO2}(4)(pdm)(2)(NO3)(2)(H2O)(2)Cl-4]center dot xCH(3)CN center dot yH(2)O (Ln = Gd-III (1, x = 1, y = 0), Dy-III (2, x = 1, y = 1), Ho-III (3, x = 0, y = 2), and Er-III (4, x = 1, y = 3); (py)(2)CO2H2 = the gem-diol form of di-2-pyridyl ketone and pdmH(2) = 2,6-pyridinedimethanol) have been obtained by employing di-2-pyridyl ketone and 2,6-pyridinedimethanol reacting with FeCl3 and Ln(NO3)(3) in MeCN. The structures of 1-4 are similar to each other except for the number of lattice solvent molecules. Four Fe-III and two Ln(III) in these complexes comprise a chair-like core with the "body" constructed by four Fe-III ions and the "end" constructed by two Ln(III) ions. Among the four compounds, 2 shows field-induced single molecule magnet behavior as revealed by ac magnetic susceptibility studies, with the effective energy barrier and the pre-exponential factor of 22.07 K and 8.44 x 10(-7) s, respectively. Ab initio calculations indicated that, among 2_Dy, 3_Ho and 4_Er fragments, the energy gap between the lowest two spin-orbit states for 2_Dy is the largest, while the tunneling gap for 2 is the smallest. These might be the reasons for complex 2 exhibiting SMM behavior. Additionally, the orientations of the magnetic anisotropy of Dy-III in 2 were obtained by electrostatic calculations and ab initio calculations, both indicating that the directions of the main magnetic axis of Dy1 ions are almost aligned along Dy1-O5 (O5 from the pdm(2-) ligand).

Abstract:A stable 3d-4f heterometallic cluster, namely, {Dy4Ni5L10(NO3)4(CO3)4(CH3OH)2}·CH3CN (Dy4Ni5, HL = 8-hydroxyquinoline), has been solvothermally synthesized and structurally characterized. The compound exhibits an interesting structure in which a tetrahedron based on 4f ions interpenetrates with a square pyramid based on 3d ions. Besides, a unique intermolecular interaction was found in Dy4Ni5, giving rise to its high stability not only when it is in the solid state but also when it dissolves in organic solvents. In addition, the magnetic behavior of solid Dy4Ni5 and the magneto-optical activity of the Dy4Ni5 solution were also studied.

Abstract:A rigid pentadentate chelating ligand (H2L) has been utilized to synthesize a series of octa-coordinate mononuclear complexes, [Dy(L)(Ph3PO)(OOCR)] (where R = C6H5 (1), C(CH3)3 (2), CF3 (3)) and a dinuclear complex, [Dy2(L)2(Ph3PO)2{(OOC)2C6H4}] (4) based on the highly anisotropic Dy(III) ion. All the complexes are structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The complexes are formed by the coordination action of the dianionic pentadentate ligand [L]2-, one phosphine oxide, and the carboxylate ligands. DC and AC magnetic measurements were performed on 1–4. Complexes 1–4 show SMM behaviour, under zero DC field for 1 and 4, under 500 Oe and 1000 Oe DC field for 2 and 3 respectively, with thermally activated, Raman and Raman + quantum tunnelling dominant relaxation mechanisms for 1 and 2, 3 and 4 respectively.

Abstract:Two trinuclear complexes of formulae [Dy3(µ 3-H2O)(hmp)3(CH3COO)3] (1) and [Gd3(µ 3-H2O)(hmp)3(CH3COO)3] (2) were synthesized by employing Dy(CH3COO)3·6H2O and Gd(CH3COO)3·6H2O as lanthanide sources and a Schiff-base H2hmp (H2hmp = 2-(((2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzyl)imino)methyl)-5-methoxyphenol) as a ligand. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that compounds 1 and 2 are isostructural. The three LnIII ions are bridged by three doubly-deprotonated Schiff-base ligands hmp2−, three acetate ions and one µ 3-H2O molecule, forming a regular triangle structure (Ln…Ln…Ln angles of 60°, and Ln…Ln distances of 3.812 Å for 1, and 3.838 Å for 2). Magnetic property studies for 1 and 2 indicate that complex 1 displays field-induced single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior, and there are weak antiferromagnetic interactions among three GdIII ions in complex 2. The main magnetic axes on DyⅢ ions of 1 are calculated by complete-active-space self-consistent field (CASSCF) calculations.

Abstract:Four tetranuclear 3d-4f complexes, namely [Fe2Ln2(L)2(teaH)2(Cl)2](NO3)2·4CH3CN (H2L = N1,N3-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)diethylenetriamine, teaH3 = triethanolamine, Ln = Dy for 1 and Ln = Gd for 1') and [Co2Ln2(L)2(pdm)2(CH3COO)2(CH3OH)2](NO3)2·xCH3OH·yH2O (pdmH2 = 2,6-pyridinedimethanol, Ln = Dy, x = 5 and y = 2.5 for 2 and Ln = Gd, x = 6 and y = 1.5 for 2'), have been reported. Two FeIII and two DyIII in 1 formed a zigzag Fe1-Dy1-Dy1a-Fe1a arrangement with a Fe1-Dy1-Dy1a angle of 105.328(3)°. However, in contrast to 1, two CoIII and two DyIII ions in 2 formed a more linear Co1-Dy1-Dy1a-Co1a arrangement with a Co1-Dy1-Dy1a angle of 141.86(2)°. Additionally, two DyIII ions in 1 are eight-coordinated with a triangular dodecahedron geometry, while two DyIII ions in 2 adopt nine-coordination with a muffin geometry. Magnetic studies revealed slow magnetic relaxation behavior for 1, with an energy barrier Ea of 6.9 K. For 2, single molecule magnet behavior was presented under a zero dc field with an effective energy barrier Ueff of 64.0(9) K. Ab initio calculations for 1 and 2 indicate that compared to 2, complex 1 has a larger transversal magnetic moment of its ground Kramers doublets (KD) and a larger value of the tunnelling parameter (Δt) for the exchanged coupled ground state, which may result in poor single molecule magnet behavior for 1.
