Abstract:Solar thermal energy technology is a critical development strategy for future renewable energy generation. Inspired by polar bear hair, this study plans to use fabrics as efficient solar collector for photothermal conversion. The solar collector is proposed with a spacing fabric/epoxy resin composites as the hollow and transparent hair of polar bears while black fabrics are used to simulate their black skins. On the spacing fabric basis, reflective powders are incorporated, after which the photothermal conversion efficacy of solar thermal energy collector (solar collector) is evaluated. When the wavelength is between 300 nm and 1350 nm, the presence of reflective powders improves the light transmittance of the composites considerably. Under the simulated sunlight, the solar collector (w/ reflective powders) exhibits 15.5% greater temperature than that of the control group (w/o reflective powders), and a maximal temperature of 84.3 °C. In addition, comparing to the use of pure resin, epoxy resin that is combined with spacing fabrics also help increasing two-fold greater thermal insulation effect. In the meanwhile, the spacing fabrics also effectively reduce the external impacts, contributing 9.2% of energy dissipation, thereby makes the composites highly impact resistant. The proposed solar collectors provide a new perspective for improving photothermal conversion efficiency.
