Abstract:It was demonstrated that a novel [3]pseudorotaxane could be separated by column chromatography during the synthesis of a copillar[5]arene. Single crystal X-ray analysis revealed that this [3]pseudorotaxane consisted of the copillar[5]arene and its monomer in a molar ratio of 2 : 1.

Abstract:Mono-alkyl-functionalized pillar[5]arenes P1,P2,and P3 were synthesized by click reaction,which exhibited different self-assembly behavior in polar solvent DMSO.Stable pseudo[1]rotaxane was formed by the self-complexation from P1 or P2,whereas,concentration-dependent pseudorotaxane structures were generated by P3 which bearing more flexible side chain.Interestingly,the obtained pseudo[1]rotaxanes exhibited a dynamic fast assembly process upon adding NaBF 4 ,resulting in the formation of Na + -induced pseudorotaxanes.

Abstract:A ethylene glycol bridged pyridine and pillar[5]arene based mechanically selflocked pseudo[1]rotaxane was constructed successfully. The structure and selflocked conformation of pseudo[1]rotaxane were confirmed by H-1, 2D NMR spectrum and HR-ESI-MS. It was found that in dilute solution the pseudo[1]rotaxane could be operated as an acid/base-controllable two state molecular shuttle while In concentrated solution, the pseudo[1]rotaxane existed as a dimer and could be operated from shrinking state to extension state.

Abstract:A novel pillar[5]arene-based supramolecular polypseudorotaxane network constructed by orthogonal self-assembly has been successfully fabricated. The obtained supramolecular polypseudorotaxane polymer was formed by a combination of two different non-covalent interactions, quadruple hydrogen bonding and pillararene-based host-guest interactions. Furthermore, a translucent film could be generated from the combination of this supramolecular polymer with PEG-2000 as the polymer matrix. The present study will provide a convenient and efficient way for the creation of pillararene-based advanced supramolecular materials.

Abstract:Based on the pillar[5]arene/imidazolium recognition motif, a [2]rotaxane was effectively prepared. Solvent/temperature triggered molecular motions of the pillar[5] arene ring on the imidazolium axle were successfully realized. By comparison of proton NMR spectra of the [2] rotaxane in different solvents, we found that if we increased the solvent polarity, the pillar[5] arene ring gradually moved away from the imidazolium part. In DMSO, we also could adjust the binding site of the pillar[5] arene ring by changing the temperature. Furthermore, in DMSO, the [2] rotaxane self-assembled to form a supramolecular gel, which showed multiple stimuli-responsiveness.

Abstract:We report novel pseudorotaxanes based on the complexation between pillar[4]arene[1]quinone and 1,10-dibromodecane. The complexation is found to have a 1:1 host–guest complexation stoichiometry in chloroform but a 2:1 host–guest complexation stoichiometry in the solid state. From single crystal X-ray diffraction, the linear guest molecules thread into cyclic pillar[4]arene[1]quinone host molecules in the solid state, stabilized by CH∙∙∙π interactions and hydrogen bonds. The bromine atoms at the periphery of the guest molecule provide convenience for the further capping of the pseudorotaxanes to construct rotaxanes.

Abstract:A series of mono-amide-functionalized pillar[5]arenes with different lengths of N-ω-aminoalkyl groups as the side chain on the rim were designed and synthesized, which all formed pseudo[1]rotaxanes in the crystal state. And these pseudo[1]rotaxanes could be transformed into [1]rotaxanes or open forms in the crystal state. In addition, they were also studied in solution by (1)H NMR spectroscopy.

Abstract:Although the construction and application of pillar[5]arene-based [1]rotaxanes have been extensively studied, the types of stoppers for them are limited. In this work, we designed and prepared three series of pillar[5]arene-based [1]rotaxanes ( P5[1]Rs ) with pentanedione derivatives, azobenzene derivatives, and salicylaldehyde derivatives as the stoppers, respectively. The obtained P5[1]Rs were fully characterized by NMR ( 1 H, 13 C, and 2D), mass spectra, and single-crystal X-ray analysis. We found that the synergic C–H···π, C–H···O interactions and N–H···O, O–H···N hydrogen bonding are the key to the stability of [1]rotaxanes. This work not only enriched the diversity of pillar[n]arene family but also gave a big boost to the pillar[n]arene-based mechanically interlocked molecules

Abstract:Macromolecular supra-amphiphiles refer to a kind of macromolecular amphiphiles whose hydrophlic and hydrophobic parts are connected by noncovalent forces. They have applications in various fields, such as drug delivery, sensor systems, and biomedical materials. Here we report a novel molecular recognition motif between a new thermoresponsive water-soluble pillar[7]arene (WP7) and an azobenzene derivative. Furthermore, we utilized this recognition motif to construct the first pillararene-based supra-amphiphilic polypseudorotaxane which can self-assemble to form vesicles in water. Due to the dual-responsiveness of the molecular recognition motif (the thermoresponsiveness of WP7 and photoresponsiveness of azobenzene), the reversible transformations between solid nanospheres based on the self-assembly of the polymer backbone and vesicles based on the self-assembly of the supra-amphiphilic polypseudorotaxane were achieved by adjusting the solution temperature or UV-visible light irradiation. These dual-responsive aggregation behaviors were further used in the controlled release of water-soluble dye calcein molecules.

Abstract:It was found that spontaneous isomerization takes place between three isomers of a pillar[5]arene (P5)-based pseudo[1]rotaxane. The isomerization process could be monitored by (1)H NMR spectra in polar solvent and the geometric configurations of the three isomers were further evaluated by theoretical calculations. In the threaded forms, the alkyl side chain might be preorganized by intramolecular N-HO bonds between the urea group of the side chain and the methoxy group of the P5 and further stabilized by multiple interactions, including H-bonding, C-H∙∙∙π interactions, and the steric effect of the N-Boc moiety. These cooperative interactions greatly enhance the stability of the threaded form in polar solvent, and endow it with very special self-inclusion behavior.
