Abstract:A novel Zn-based metal organic framework (MOF) was synthesized from the mixed ligands, 3,3',5,5'-azoxybenzenetetracarboxylic acid (H(4)AOBTC) and 1,4-bis(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-1-yl)benzene (phenDIB) ligand. The crystal structure of the complex exhibits an interpenetrated three-dimensional framework that can be simplified as a (4,4)-connected 2-nodal bbf net. This MOF displays extraordinary thermostability in boiling water for 12 h and chemical stability in a wide pH range of 2-13. The most intriguing feature is that it can successfully separate cationic dyes from mixed dye molecules in aqueous solution with high effectivity and selectivity, even for rhodamine B molecule with a large size. Furthermore, this material is reusable, and the adsorbed dye molecules can be released and recovered completely. It is very important for the practical application from a view of environmental protection and resource recycling.

The confinement effect of the MOFs is beneficial for low-threshold lasing. By effectively controlling the polarity of the MOF pores, the population distribution between the locally excited and ICT states is continuously modulated, thus achieving broadband tunable MOF-based microlasers.

Abstract:Microporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent a new family of microporous materials, offering potential applications in gas separation and storage, catalysis, and membranes. The engineering of hierarchical superstructured MOFs, i.e., fabricating mesopores in microporous frameworks during the crystallization stage is expected to serve a myriad of applications for molecular adsorption, drug delivery, and catalysis. However, MOFs with mesopores are rarely studied because of the lack of a simple, effective way to construct mesoscale cavities in the structures. Here, we report the use of a perturbation-assisted nanofusion technique to construct hierarchically superstructured MOFs. In particular, the mesopores in the MOF structure enabled the confinement of large dye species, resulting in fluorescent MOF materials, which can serve as a new type of ratiometric luminescent sensors for typical volatile organic compounds.

Abstract:The optical properties of dye molecules in confined spaces can differ from the solution phase due to confinement effects. Pre-organized mesoscale channels of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are very suited for hosting various dyes, and the robust frameworks often render the encapsulated dyes with certain preferential geometries, which are different from those found in solution. Furthermore, pre-organized open channels can efficiently guide the uniform and unique spatial distribution of dye molecules in a controlled manner, which are otherwise difficult to achieve. Thus, sufficiently large dye molecules can avoid the formation of complex aggregates when captured inside open channels. In contrast, small dye molecules can form well-defined dimers or aggregates. The resulting dye-encapsulated MOFs can display unusual photophysical properties of the captured dyes. An anionic framework of In-BTB with mesoscale 3D channels is utilized for the efficient encapsulation of various cationic dyes through cation-exchange processes. Six different cationic dyes are encapsulated in the anionic framework of In-BTB, and their crystal structures are completely solved. Novel photophysical properties of these spatially distributed dye molecules in dye@In-BTBs are investigated.

Abstract:Two europium metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on the same ligand, named as ZJU-23-Eu and ZJU-24-Eu, are selectively synthesized by fine-tuning solvent contents to tailor the coordination modes. Eu atoms are eight-coordinated and nine-coordinated in ZJU-23-Eu and ZJU-24-Eu respectively, and their frameworks vary in both spatial connectivity and symmetry. The ligand not only has multiphoton response but also suitable triplet energy level (19 998 cm(-1)) to sensitize Eu3+. Thus ZJU-23-Eu exhibits characteristic emission of Eu3+ peaking at 614 nm via the energy transfer from the two-/three-photon excited ligand to Eu3+, with its bidimensional layered structure benefiting this process. In contrast, the changed spatial connectivity in tridimensional ZJU-24-Eu narrows the distances between adjacent Eu3+ ions and reduces the density, resulting in poor two-photon excited fluorescence. Besides, noncentrosymmetric ZJU-24-Eu shows second harmonic generation (SHG) response with an intensity of approximate to 6.2 times relative to KH2PO4 (KDP) microcrystalline powder while centrosymmetric ZJU-23-Eu cannot. These results have established two nonlinear optical (NLO) models based on MOFs to synchronously analyze the effects of two structural variables on different NLO behaviors, and provide ingenious ways to design MOF-based NLO devices with function on demand.

Abstract:The unique features of the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), including ultrahigh porosities and surface areas, tunable pores, endow the MOFs with special utilizations as host matrices. In this work, various neutral and ionic guest dye molecules, such as fluorescent brighteners, coumarin derivatives, 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-(p-dimethylaminostyryl)-4H-pyran (DCM), and 4-(p-dimethylaminostyryl)-1-methylpyridinium (DSM), are encapsulated in a neutral MOF, yielding novel blue-, green-, and red-phosphors, respectively. Furthermore, this study introduces the red-, green-, and blue-emitting dyes into a MOF together for the first time, producing white-light materials with nearly ideal Commission International ed'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates, high color-rendering index values (up to 92%) and quantum yields (up to 26%), and moderate correlated color temperature values. The white light is tunable by changing the content or type of the three dye guests, or the excitation wavelength. Significantly, the introduction of blue-emitting guests in the methodology makes the available MOF host more extensive, and the final white-light output more tunable and high-quality. Such strategy can be widely adopted to design and prepare white-light-emitting materials.

Abstract:In order to expand the application range of luminescent dye, metal-organic framework (MOF) is applied as a carrier to solve the problem such as low luminescent efficiency and poor stability. Here a two-photon luminescent dye-confined ionic metal-organic framework (iMOF) ZJU-68 superset of DMASM was prepared through size confinement and electrostatic interaction. The dye loading content was investigated to obtain maximum luminescent efficiency and it was found that the change of two-photon emission intensity was consistent with that of quantum efficiency. In addition, the composite showed excellent physiological temperature sensing performance from 20 degrees C to 60 degrees C with a high relative sensitivity, good water stability and good biocompatibility, possessing great potential to be applied in biological field.

Abstract:Molecule-based crystalline materials with angle-dependent polarized emission have attracted considerable attention owing to their extensive applications in displays and anticounterfeiting. Herein, one anionic metal–organic framework (MOF) {[Zn2.5(μ3-OH)(NDC)2(HNDC)](HPIM)}n was constructed on the basis of an excellent photoactive ligand naphthalene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid (H2NDC). The protonated 2-propylimidazole (HPIM) guests residing in the nanochannels of MOF can be exchanged by a D-π-A cationic dye. Abstract:Two novel adenine-containing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with the same components but different pore environments and topologies, named ZnTDCA-1 and ZnTDCA-2, were designed and synthesized. The host-guest composites were successfully fabricated by encapsulating a laser dye, 4-(p-dimethylaminostyryl)-1-methylpyridinium (DSM), into the MOFs, and their luminescence behaviours were found to be dependent on their different pore shapes, supported by spectral measurements, pore metrics analysis, and periodic density functional theory calculations. Notably, the quantum yield of DSM@ZnTDCA-1 can reach 39.3%, with no obvious decrease when increasing the content of DSM, indicating a favourable pore matching effect between the pocketlike pores of the ZnTDCA-1 host and the DSM, which facilitates the DSM to be fixed within the frameworks and uniformly dispersed. On the contrary, although ZnTDCA-2 has a larger size to adsorb more dye, DSM diffuses along one-dimensional square channels after entering the host framework, resulting in the accumulation of DSM in large and regular channels, leading to fluorescence quenching. The work reveals the influence of pore shape, in particular the pocketlike confinement space, on the luminescence of the DSM@MOFs system. Moreover, our preliminary cell culture and cytotoxicity experiments indicate the DSM@MOFs system is biocompatible and can serve as a platform for biological microlaser and various bio-applications.

Abstract:Two-photon-pumped dye lasers are very important because of their applications in wavelength up-conversion, optical data storage, biological imaging and photodynamic therapy. Such lasers are very difficult to realize in the solid state because of the aggregation-caused quenching. Here we demonstrate a new two-photon-pumped micro-laser by encapsulating the cationic pyridinium hemicyanine dye into an anionic metal-organic framework (MOF). The resultant MOF [symbol: see text] dye composite exhibits significant two-photon fluorescence because of the large absorption cross-section and the encapsulation-enhanced luminescent efficiency of the dye. Furthermore, the well-faceted MOF crystal serves as a natural Fabry-Perot resonance cavity, leading to lasing around 640 nm when pumped with a 1064-nm pulse laser. This strategy not only combines the crystalline benefit of MOFs and luminescent behaviour of organic dyes but also creates a new synergistic two-photon-pumped lasing functionality, opening a new avenue for the future creation of solid-state photonic materials and devices.

Abstract:A novel porous metal-organic framework, {[Zn-2(L)center dot H2O]center dot 3H(2)O center dot 3DMAc center dot NH2(CH3)(2)}(n) (Zn(II)-MOF), was synthesized under solvothermal conditions using a flexible multicarboxylic acid (H5L = 3,5-bis(1-methoxy-3,5-benzene dicarboxylic acid) benzoic acid). Zn(II)-MOF contains 1D nanotubular channels of 13.8 angstrom x 16.4 angstrom and exhibits a rare 5-connected vbk net with a Schlafli symbol of {4(5).6(5)} topology. Notably, Zn(II)-MOF can adsorb toluidine blue fast and effectively, and trap lanthanide ions such as Eu3+ and Tb3+ to sensitize their emissions in the solid state through a Ln(3+)-exchanged approach. Furthermore, we successfully obtained white light emitting materials.

Abstract:The long-persistent phosphorescent metal-organic framework (MOF) is a kind of highly desirable but rare material. Here, two new molecular MOF materials, {[Zn(tipa)Cl]center dot NO3 center dot 2DMF}(n) (1) and {[Cd-2(tipa)(2)Cl-4]center dot 6DMF}(n) (2) (tipa = tri(4-imidazolylphenyl)amine), which have 3D twofold interpenetrated (utp) and 2D noninterpenetrated (kgd) topologies, respectively, are reported. They exhibit unexpected long-persistent emissions yet reported: At 77 K, they persist in glowing after stopping the UV irradiation on a timescale up to seconds at 77 K, which can be detected by the naked eye (ca. 2 s). Compounds 1 and 2 also undergo single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC-SC) transformations through different routes; a simple anion-exchange route for 1 and a complicated replacement of mu(1)-Cl- ions by DMF molecules accompanying I-3(-) captured in the void for 2.

Abstract:We report the investigation on the nonlinear optical properties of two typical two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (2D MOFs) - 2D Cu-MOF and Zn-MOF (copper/zinc 1,4-benzene dicarboxylate, CuBDC and ZnBDC) using spatial self-phase modulation (SSPM) and spatial cross-phase modulation (SXPM) methods. It is found that 2D Cu-MOF exhibits a large nonlinear optical coefficient n2=5.20×10-11m2/Wandχ3=8.24×10−11e.s.u. By contrast, no nonlinear optical effect was observed from 2D Zn-MOF under the same condition. The main reason is the Cu center of Cu-MOF has variable valence electrons and a vacant 3d atom orbit, which can form a conjugated system with organic ligands through the d-π interaction and therefore strengthen the nonlinear optical effect by the delocalization of π electrons. However, the Zn ion of Zn-MOF with fixed valence electrons and fully occupied d orbit makes it hard to produce observable nonlinear optical effect. Furthermore, we demonstrated the ability of 2D Cu-MOF in all-optical spatial light modulation and optical switch based on the principle of SXPM. This work sheds light on the physics of 2D MOFs in all-optical light modulation, providing an insight for rational design of 2D MOFs with high nonlinear optical coefficients in future.
