Traveltime inversion can be implemented in either the image domain or the data domain. Typical image domain inversion methods, such as the Ray-based tomographic migration velocity analysis or the wave-equation migration velocity analysis, require the calculation of common image gathers, which is quite computational demanding. For data domain traveltime inversion methods, it is difficult to measure the reflection traveltime difference between the observed and synthetic data accurately, especially in the absence of prior information of the subsurface structure. In this paper, we start from the sparse decomposition of prestack seismic data, using the characteristic wavefield decomposition (CWD) method to separate the reflection events and estimate the ray-parameters. Meanwhile, the traveltime of each reflection event is defined by its envelope maxima. Therefore, the stereo data space can be estimated directly from the CWD data. Then, a novel method for reflection traveltime residual estimation is proposed, which can eliminate the influence on traveltime residual measurement caused by the amplitude information. Finally, a characteristic wavefield reflection traveltime inversion (CWRTI) is developed, which can provide a good initial model for the subsequent waveform inversion and seismic imaging. The CWRTI method neither requires low-frequency seismic data and/or long-offset acquisition. In addition, it has a low dependence to the accuracy of the initial model. Furthermore, CWRTI is a fully automatic procedure, making it quite promising for automatic macro-velocity model building. Synthetic and field examples demonstrate the effectiveness of CWRTI. Waveform Imaging Based on Linear Forward Representations for Scalar Wave Seismic Data

Abstract:The current reverse-time migration, which is based on wave equations for imaging wavefields, employs an imaging formula derived from Claerbout’s imaging principle. This imaging formula is only valid for plane waves with small incident angles on the perfectly flat reflecting surface. However, the complexity of seismic wave propagation may lead to situations that do not meet this requirement. Therefore, this paper divides the subsurface into local scattering and reflecting bodies. It proposes linear forward representations for scattering and reflection data based on perturbations in the physical parameters and wave impedance, respectively. To further describe the effect on the reflecting body boundary, the local reflection coefficient is defined and the linear forward representation for the reflection data based on it is obtained. After that, the proposed linear forward representations are used as the forward equations for the linear inverse of the seismic data, and the seismic data waveform imaging method is developed based on linear inversion theory. At the same time, the specific waveform imaging calculation formulas for scalar wave scattering data and scalar wave reflection data are provided and validated via numerical experiments. Compared with the current reverse-time migration, waveform migration not only has the correct phase and higher resolution in theory but also does not increase the computational complexity. To some extent, it improves the deficiencies of the current structural imaging and provides a basis for subsurface lithological imaging.

Abstract:A wave equation method tracing wavefield propagation path is proposed with ray theory.A windowed Fourier frame expansion technique is employed for angle decomposition of wavefields of source-point and target-point.Directional illumination is calculated.An angle coherence technique is applied to directional illumination to acquire propagation path between source-point and target-point.The method takes into account focusing and defocusing effects of the wavefield propagation caused by inhomogeneous media.

Abstract:High-quality seismic data imaging plays an important role in the lithological interpretation of subsurface structures. However, high-quality imaging remains a challenging task. Based on the linear inversion theory of reflected wave equations, this paper proposes reflected wave least squares reverse time migration with angle illumination compensation to better balance the amplitude of seismic imaging. We use the reflected wave migration equation to unify forward and backward propagation, which helps to obtain an image with correct phase and symmetric waveform. Under the assumption that the spectrum of seismic wavefield remains unchanged, the Poynting vector method is used to efficiently calculate the propagation direction of seismic waveform and seismic illumination in the angle domain. During iteration, angle-domain illumination is used as a preconditioner to compensate for the amplitude of the iterated gradient terms based on the angle value. In this manner, we can enhance the imaging energy of steeply inclined structures. To improve the stability of linear inversion, the spatial derivative of the image is used as a regularized constraint term. Numerical tests show that the proposed method can suppress imaging noise as well as improve resolution and amplitude fidelity of the images. Furthermore, the inversed result can be used to estimate underground reflectivity, which is important for the further development of seismic inversion technology.
Full Waveform Inversion of the Second-Order Time Integral Wavefield

Abstract:We proposed a new full waveform inversion (FWI) method, namely full waveform inversion of the second-order time integral wavefield, by enhancing low-frequency components of seismic data with a second-order time integration to seismic wavefield, which can efficiently reduce the initial model dependence of FWI. According to the propagation equation of scattering wavefield in scattering theory, we derived a propagation equation for the scattering wavefield with second-order time integral, and used the leading order Born approximation for the linearization to the propagation equation. Based on this equation, using the scattering wavefield to inverse the distribution of scattering sources in subsurface, and using wavefield modeling to construct the incident wavefield, and according to the linear relationship between the scattering wavefield and incident wavefield, velocity perturbation in the linear propagation equation for the scattering wavefield with second-order time integral, we applied a formula similar to the imaging formula of migration to estimate velocity perturbation, and established an iterative inversion method for the full waveform inversion of second-order integral wavefield. Applying the inversion result of full waveform inversion of second-order integral wavefield as the initial velocity model for the conventional FWI can efficiently reduce the initial model dependence of FWI. Numerical tests using synthetic data of the Marmousi model demonstrate the validity and feasibility of the proposed method. The final results of the new method can obtain much improved results than the conventional FWI. Furthermore, to test the independence to the seismic frequency-band, we used a low-cut source wavelet (cutting from 4Hz below) to generate the synthetic data. The inversion results by our new method show no appreciable difference from the full-band source results.

Abstract:ABSTRACTSufficient low‐frequency information is essential for full‐waveform inversion to get the global optimal solution. Multi‐scale envelope inversion was proposed using a new Fréchet derivative to invert the long‐wavelength component of the model by directly using the low‐frequency components contained in an envelope of seismic data. Although the new method can recover the main structure of the model, the inversion quality of the model bottom still needs to be improved. Reflection waveform inversion reduces the dependence of inversion on low‐frequency and long‐offset data by using travel‐time information in reflected waves. However, when the underground medium contains strong contrast or the initial model is far away from the true model, it is hard to get reliable reference reflectors for the generation of reflected waves. Here, we propose a combination inversion algorithm, i.e., reflection multi‐scale envelope inversion, to overcome the limitations of multi‐scale envelope inversion and reflection waveform inversion. First, wavefield decomposition was introduced into the multi‐scale envelope inversion to improve the inversion quality of the long‐wavelength components of the model. Then, after the initial model had been established to be accurate enough, migration and de‐migration were introduced to achieve multi‐scale reflection waveform inversion. The numerical results of the salt‐layer model and the SEG/EAGE salt model verified the validity of the proposed approach and its potential.
Wave-equation Traveltime Slope Inversion by Combining Finite Difference and Cross-Correlation Methods

Abstract:As an essential step in seismic inversion, velocity macromodel building provides a low-wavenumber background velocity model for seismic imaging and full waveform inversion. Defined as the first-order partial derivative of traveltime with regard to spatial coordinates, slope information has been directly or indirectly applied in ray-based geophysical inversion to retrieve models containing low and intermediate wavenumbers. In this study, to use slopes of locally coherent events in background velocity model building, we extend the slope inversion from ray theory to wave equation, which we name wave-equation traveltime slope inversion (WSI). Unlike traditional ray-based slope inversion, which relies on tedious picking of continuous horizons, we compute slope conveniently and robustly through cross-correlation and finite difference methods. Furthermore, we present the formulation of wave-equation traveltime slope inversion under the framework of wave-equation traveltime inversion. Traveltime and slopes are distinct data attributes that play different roles in reconstructing low-wavenumber background velocity models. Compared with the classic traveltime inversion, the wave-equation traveltime slope inversion is more sensitive to local velocity changes. Numerical examples demonstrate that the proposed method improves the horizontal resolution in velocity model building, which especially shows excellent potential in obtaining a higher lateral resolution of reconstruction for steeply dipping structures than traditional wave-equation traveltime inversion. What's more, this study makes the joint inversion of travel time and slope based on the wave equation possible, which can theoretically bring a higher resolution stabilized inversion.

Abstract:Estimation of an accurate macro velocity model plays an important role in seismic imaging and model parameter inversion. Full waveform inversion (FWI) is the classical data-domain inversion method. However, the misfit function of FWI is highly nonlinear, and the local optimization cannot prevent convergence of the misfit function toward local minima. To converge to the global minimum, FWI needs a good initial model or reliable low frequency component and long offset data. In this article, we present a wave-equation-based reflection traveltime tomography (WERTT) method, which can provide a good background model (initial model) for FWI and (least-square) pre-stack depth migration (LS-PSDM). First, the velocity model is decomposed into a low-wavenumber component (background velocity) and a high-wavenumber component (reflectivity). Second, the primary reflection wave is predicted by wave-equation demigration, and the reflection traveltime is calculated by an automatic picking method. Finally, the misfit function of the l2-norm of the reflection traveltime residuals is minimized by a gradient-based method. Numerical tests show that the proposed method can invert a good background model, which can be used as an initial model for LS-PSDM or FWI.
Least squares migration of seismic data with reflection wave equation

Abstract:We proposed a least squares migration method of seismic data for the estimation of subsurface reflectivity distribution based on reflection wave equation. Under high frequency approximation, the source term of inhomogeneous primary reflection wave equation is generated by the interaction between the reflectivity and the first order derivative of incident wavefield with respect to time. According to the reflection wave equation, we used the linear least squares inversion to recover the subsurface reflection source generating reflection wave from seismic reflection data, then to obtain the estimation of subsurface reflectivity distribution from the recovered reflection source by combining the subsurface incident wavefield calculated by forward modeling. In the reconstruction of the subsurface reflection source with the linear least squares inversion, we adopted the iterative manner for the solution, and used the seismic wave illumination intensity of the receiver direction as the approximation of Hessian matrix of the least squares optimization problem.
Marchenko Equation for Time Reversal Imaging in an Underwater Acoustic Waveguide

Abstract:Time reversal (TR) has been used to acoustic imaging to recover the spatial distribution of scatterers or the source location in an underwater acoustic waveguide. This study presents a method based on Marchenko equation, and we focus on achieving acoustic source distribution inside the medium. However, to achieve accurate results for TR imaging, a detailed model of the medium should be known. Otherwise, artifacts can emerge and the results will suffer a lot from model mismatch. Our proposed methodology aims to eliminate the artifacts caused by model mismatch, and to improve the results of imaging weaker sources. To achieve this, reflection data must be acquired from a vertical array and a transducer array is also needed to emit the signal iteratively.
Rytov-approximation-based Wave-Equation Traveltime Tomography

Abstract:Most finite-frequency traveltime tomography methods are based on the Born approximation, which requires that the scale of the velocity heterogeneity and the magnitude of the velocity perturbation should be small enough to satisfy the Born approximation. On the contrary, the Rytov approximation works well for large-scale velocity heterogeneity. Typically, the Rytov-approximation-based finite-frequency traveltime sensitivity kernel (Rytov-FFTSK) can be obtained by integrating the phase-delay sensitivity kernels with a normalized weighting function, in which the calculation of sensitivity kernels requires the numerical solution of Green's function. However, solving the Green's function explicitly is quite computationally demanding, especially for 3D problems. To avoid explicit calculation of the Green's function, we show that the Rytov-FFTSK can be obtained by crosscorrelating a forward-propagated incident wavefield and reverse-propagated adjoint wavefield in the time domain. In addition, we find that the action of the Rytov-FFTSK on a model-space vector, e.g., the product of the sensitivity kernel and a vector, can be computed by calculating the inner product of two time-domain fields. Consequently, the Hessian-vector product can be computed in a matrix-free fashion (i.e., first calculate the product of the sensitivity kernel and a model-space vector and then calculate the product of the transposed sensitivity kernel and a data-space vector), without forming the Hessian matrix or the sensitivity kernels explicitly. We solve the traveltime inverse problem with the Gauss-Newton method, in which the Gauss-Newton equation is approximately solved by the conjugate gradient using our matrix-free Hessian-vector product method. An example with a perfect acquisition geometry found that our Rytov-approximation-based traveltime inversion method can produce a high-quality inversion result with a very fast convergence rate. An overthrust synthetic data test demonstrates that large- to intermediate-scale model perturbations can be recovered by diving waves if long-offset acquisition is available.
Wave-equation First-Arrival Tomography for 3-D Near-Surface Velocity Inversion

Abstract:Summary In wave-equation traveltime inversion, the major computation comes from the calculation of the functional gradient or Fréchet derivative. Considering that the goal of traveltime inversion is to recover the large-scale velocity model (i.e., the low-wavenumber component), we propose a computationally economical method to calculate the functional gradient using the monochromatic traveltime sensitivity kernel, which considerably reduces the computational cost as well as memory requirement. 3-D field test demonstrates that a high-resolution near-surface velocity model can be inverted using wave-equation traveltime tomography with affordable computer resources.

Abstract:The core of seismic wave inversion imaging is to translate solving a strong nonlinear inverse problem to a further convex inverse problem.The reason of strong nonlinearity in inverse problem lies in the far from linear relation between the real data and the model parameters and the forward problem cannot accurately predict the full wave field.Therefore,we put forward the theoretical framework of characteristic wave inversion (CWI).Its basic idea is not to seek predicting the whole wave phenomena in the real data,but to aspire for interpreting characteristic wave field.Comparing with the full waveform inversion (FWI),CWI is consisted of four basic steps:characteristic wave field (CWF) extracting;wave equation based transmitted wave tomography;wave equation based reflection wave tomography;least square prestack depth migration.CWI is an inversion-imaging framework based on the characteristic wave phenomena in the real data.CWF extraction is the key step,which has three levels meaning:decomposing of the wave phenomena (such as vector wave filed is decomposed into scalar wave field,primaries and multiples are decomposed);decomposing of the temporally and spatially local,single seismic phase,directional and bandlimited wave field from real data;decomposing of the wavelet on the events into the travletime,phase and something else.The compressive sensing method is used in CWF extractior.Wave equation based transmitted wave tomography is based on the first arrival and early arrival traveltime.The inversion imaging based on the disturbance wave field firstly deal with the reflection wave from the layered strata,and then the scattered wave and diffracted wave.The background velocity estimation in the data domain mainly depends on the traveltime and phase,and the effect of the amplitude of the wavelet on the traveltime and phase measuring is removed as possible.The traveltime or phase information can be only used in the background velocity estimation in the imaging domain;it is not suitable for using the amplitude information.For the parameter disturbance estimation,the azimuth/opening-angle reflectivity estimation should be firstly implemented,and then the scattering strength is estimated.Characteristic Wave Inversion Imaging is a realistic procedure to push the classical FWI into the practical application.The numerical experimentation proves the statements.
Investigation and Use of Surface-wave Characteristics for Near-surface Applications

Abstract:High-frequency surface-wave methods can provide reliable near-surface shear-wave (S-wave) velocity, which is a key parameter in many shallow-engineering applications, groundwater and environmental studies, and petroleum exploration. Recent research and key accomplishments at the China University of Geosciences at Wuhan into nearfield effects on surface-wave analysis provide not only insight into minimum-source geophone offsets required for generating high-quality surface-wave images but also provide a better understanding of the propagation characteristics of seismic wavefields through near-surface materials. New numerical modeling and dispersion-analysis algorithms are key tools used routinely in those studies. The modeling results illustrate very different energy-partitioning characteristics for Rayleigh and Love waves. Using a high-resolution linear Radon transform produces dispersion images with much better resolution and therefore represents a tool for more accurate separation and determination of phase velocities for different modes. Mode separation results in wavefield components that individually possess great potential for increasing horizontal resolution of S-wave velocity-field determinations. Amplitude corrections can significantly improve the accuracy of phase-velocity estimates from mixed-modal wavefields. Results from two simple models demonstrate how dramatic topographic changes can distort wavefields. This finding was the catalyst for suggesting that a topographic correction should be considered for surface-wave data acquired on a rugged ground surface. Phase-velocity inversion is an ill-posed problem. Rayleigh-wave sensitivity analysis reveals the difficulty in estimating S-wave velocities for a model with a low-velocity layer. Constraints in the model space are therefore necessary. Approximating cutoffs could help build a better initial model and provide critical information about the subsurface when higher modes are present.
3D Wave-Equation First-Arrival Tomography Using Monochromatic Traveltime Sensitivity Kernel

Abstract:Seismic traveltime tomography is a key technique for near-surface velocity model building. Specifically, the wave-equation tomography can correctly handle the first-order diffraction phenomena when the scale of velocity heterogeneity is comparable with the incident wavelength. Although wave-equation-based traveltime inversion can theoretically produce a velocity model with higher resolution compared with ray tomography, the computational cost is much higher which prohibits its implementation for industry-scaled 3-D problems. To address this problem, by introducing the random boundary condition and the discrete Fourier integration, we propose a practical 3-D waveequation first -arrival tomography using the monochromatic gradient inversion scheme. The advantages of the proposed method are: in terms of computational cost and storage space, the proposed method only needs very few memory spaces (i. e., compared with wave-equation forward modeling, only two additional monochromatic wavefields and one image volume are required), and meanwhile, the computational cost is decreased at least by 1/3 (i. e., compared with the wavefield reconstruction scheme, only two wavefield propagations are needed, and no special treatment for numerical boundaries). Besides, the introduction of random boundary conditions further simplifies the modeling algorithm which in turn makes it well suited for GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) acceleration. Theoretically, considering that the major area that may influence the first -order diffraction of seismic waves is usually referred to as the first Fresnel zone, which has a very similar shape to the monochromatic sensitivity kernel calculated with the dominant frequency. On one hand, the monochromatic sensitivity kernel within the first Fresnel zone will be coherently increased because the scattered wavefield caused by random boundaries becomes less spatial correlative. On the other hand, the multi-fold seismic acquisition system makes the sensitivity kernels outside the first Fresnel zone further canceled. Numerical example demonstrates that the smoothed monochromatic gradient contains sufficient low-wavenumber components which are adequate for background velocity inversion. Moreover, a 3-D synthetic data test demonstrates that a high-resolution near-surface velocity model can be inverted using wave-equation traveltime tomography with affordable computer resources. Compared with the traditional wave-equation tomography methods, the proposed method not only reduces the memory requirement remarkably but also significantly increases the computational efficiency. Therefore, it is very promising for dealing with industrial-sized 3-D inverse problems.
Wave equation traveltime tomography using Rytov approximation

Abstract:The conventional wave-equation traveltime sensitivity kernel ( TSK) or traveltime Frechet derivative is derived from the Born approximation and cross-correlation measurement, which has a very narrow valid condition. In fact, the seismic traveltime has a more linear relationship with the large-scale velocity structure. For small-angle forward scattered wavefield, Rytov approximation is proved to be superior to Born approximation. Based on the Rytov approximation and cross-correlation measurement, a new wave-equation traveltime sensitivity kernel is derived. Meanwhile, an implicit matrix-vector product method is proposed, which can directly calculate the product of a matrix (TSK) and a model-space vector as well as the product of a matrix transpose and a data-space vector, eliminating the need of calculating TSK explicitly. Based on the proposed implicit matrix-vector product method, traveltime tomography using the Gauss-Newton inversion algorithm is implemented efficiently by solving the normal equation iteratively using a conjugate gradient method. Compared with the conventional TSK method, the proposed inversion strategy is free of TSK calculation and storage, making it more practical for large-scale problem. Compared with the adjoint traveltime tomography, the proposed method has a quasi-second-order convergent rate and a broader valid condition. Numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Summary The conventional travel-time sensitivity kernel (TSK) is derived using the first-order Born approximation. However, the first-order Rytov approximation is more suitable for the first arrival tomography due to its better behaving for the forward scattering. In this paper, we present a wave-equation based travel-time tomography method, which is derived from the first-order Rytov-approximation to the wave equation. The travel-time sensitivity kernel can be calculated using the well-known RTM-like algorithm. The L2-norm of travel-time residuals is minimized by the Gauss-Newton algorithm. The presented method is applied to the first arrival travel-time inversion. Synthetic examples show that the long-wavelength part of the velocity model can be recovered well.

Abstract:Finite-frequency traveltime inversion offers higher accuracy for velocity model building than ray-based traveltime inversion. The adjoint force is the key for the computation of inversion kernels. Starting at the definition of inversion kernels for the acoustic wave equation, we have derived the explicit formula for the spectral distribution density function used in the adjoint force computation. Two formulations are developed for the computation of adjoint forces for receiver-side extrapolation, frequency-domain representation, and time-domain representation. The accuracy of finite-frequency traveltime inversion kernels is benchmarked with the analytical solutions for homogeneous isotropic media. We use wavefront construction to compute the first Fresnel zones for kernel conditioning. Based on dynamic ray tracing, we design a processing procedure guided by synthetic data tests to extract the desired events for wavefield backward extrapolation from the data. Unlike ray-based velocity tomography, finite-frequency inversion can resolve the velocity structures comparable with the size of Fresnel zones as we demonstrate on a marine salt model using ocean-bottom node acquisition geometry. Despite the fact that the inversion kernels are based on Born approximation, velocities with errors up to 20% can be well-resolved. For practical purposes, a simple formulation is given for the determination of the shot spacing. Our workflow for finite-frequency inversion is efficient and converges in only very few iterations.
