Abstract:The lithospheric evolution of western Laurentia spans several billion years of Earth history and provides an exceptional opportunity for investigating continental deformation during Archean and Proterozoic assembly of the craton and subsequent Phanerozoic orogenic processes along its western margin. In this study we present fundamental-mode Rayleigh wave azimuthal anisotropy in the period range 20-150s for western Laurentia and the southern Canadian Cordillera. The surface wave phase velocity maps offer new constraints on the depth distribution of seismic anisotropy in this region. At short periods (20-25s), strong anisotropy with an orogen-parallel fast direction is evident in the Cordillera and neighboring foreland belt, suggesting pervasive ductile deformation in the lower crust during Laramide orogenesis. At periods of 70s and higher, a zone of low-to-null azimuthal anisotropy is evident in the southern part of the Cordillera. This apparent null region is interpreted to reflect complex asthenospheric flow due to the combined effects of the Juan de Fuca slab window, lithospheric delamination, and small-scale edge-driven convection. Depth-variant azimuthal anisotropy is evident beneath the cratonic part of the study region. The dominant direction of fast wave propagation in the southeastern part of the craton changes from N-S at periods of <120s to NE-SW at 150s period. This depth dependence is inferred to arise from different origins of the observed anisotropy, with frozen anisotropy within cratonic lithosphere underlain by flow-driven anisotropy in the asthenosphere. The frozen N-S trending fabrics in the middle to lower cratonic lithosphere most likely reflect processes of Paleoproterozoic assembly of western Laurentia.
Large Variations in Lithospheric Thickness of Western Laurentia: Tectonic Inheritance or Collisional Reworking?

Abstract:The ca. 2.0-1.8 Ga tectonic assembly of Laurentia provides a record of complex processes resulting in amalgamation of distinct lithospheric domains. In global and continental-scale teleseismic tomographic models, however, the subcontinental lithosphere beneath western Laurentia appears to have a deceptively simple structure that lacks a clear correlation with mapped crustal domains. Here we present a new shear-velocity model of the upper mantle beneath western Laurentia through Rayleigh-wave tomography, using data from several newly deployed broadband seismic arrays. Our models show prominent heterogeneities that appear to correlate well with crustal domains and other geophysical observations. The tomographic results delineate high-velocity keel-shaped anomalies beneath the Archean Hearne Province and the Paleoproterozoic Buffalo Head Terrane; these features are inferred to extend to depths of up to 260 km and likely represent ancient thick cratonic roots, whereas relatively thin lithosphere characterizes the adjacent Wabamun domain and Medicine Hat Block. A regional isostatic residual gravity anomaly in the foreland of the Cretaceous-Paleocene southern Canadian Rockies coincides with an area of inferred thick lithosphere in the Hearne Province, suggesting that along-strike variations in flexural rigidity correlate with lithospheric thickness. Taken together, our results suggest that high-amplitude basal topography of the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary beneath cratons reflects a complex lithospheric evolution that combines effects of both tectonic inheritance and collisional reworking. Shear Wave Splitting Discloses Two Episodes of Collision‐Related Convergence in Western North America

Abstract:Seismic anisotropy imposes first‐order constraints on the strain history of crust and upper mantle rocks. In this study, we analyze the mantle seismic anisotropy of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin using a new shear wave spitting data set consisting of 1,333 teleseismic arrivals from 82 seismic stations. The resulting 332 high‐quality measurements yield a regional mean apparent splitting time (i.e., the magnitude of anisotropy) of 1.1 ± 0.3 s and an average fast orientation (i.e., the direction of anisotropy) of 54.6° ± 17.2°, which favor a two‐layer anisotropic model based on the 90° back azimuthal periodicity in both parameters. The northeast trending fast orientations dominate the lower layer at lithospheric depths and are approximately parallel to the present‐day absolute plate motions (APMs; i.e., <35°) due to the active asthenospheric flow. On the other hand, deviations from the APMs along the Canadian Rocky Mountain foothills could reflect disrupted mantle flow surrounding a southwestward migrating cratonic lithosphere. Also revealed are two elongated upper‐layer anisotropic anomalies in the lithosphere that are spatially correlated with Moho depths. Their characteristics suggest frozen‐in anisotropy imprinted along two convergent boundaries: (1) the Paleoproterozoic Snowbird Tectonic Zone that separates northeast (north) from northwest (south) fast directions and (2) the foothills of the Rocky Mountains that exhibit northeast trending orientations consistent with those of the APMs, maximum crustal stress, and electromagnetic anisotropy. Compressions associated with the Cordilleran orogenesis could be responsible for the spatial changes in the shear wave anisotropy from the foothills to the cratonic interior.
Frayed Edges Of Cratonic Mantle Keels: Thermal Diffusion Timescales And Their Predicted Imprint On Mantle-Velocity Structure

Abstract:Lithospheric mantle keels beneath cratons are substantially colder than the surrounding asthenosphere. If processes of delamination or thermochemical erosion create a new edge that abruptly juxtaposes internal parts of a cratonic keel with convecting upper mantle, the intact part of the keel will be heated along the edge by thermal diffusion. Sustained heating along a newly exposed edge will lead to a reduction in seismic-wave speed and density within a slowly expanding region of the lithospheric keel. Here, we combine thermal-diffusion modeling with mineral-physics relations to explore the predicted seismic expression of this process, as well as the potential for characterizing its time dependence. Examples are presented that are broadly representative of -proposed models for the western edge of Laurentia beneath the Canadian Cordillera and the boundary between the Ordos Block and the eastern North China craton. Analysis of synthetic seismograms indicates that teleseismic body-wave delay times could be used to characterize an edge-proximal velocity reduction in order to provide an upper-bound estimate on time of formation of a craton edge.

Abstract:Understanding the Mesozoic–Cenozoic tectonic evolution of the North China Craton (NCC) and the NE Tibetan Plateau (TP) requires detailed knowledge of the lithospheric structure. Using dense regional networks and temporary deployments as well as updated reference models, we obtain the crust and upper mantle structure to 120km depth. Our tomographic results show several major features, which have particular implications for the Weihe–Shanxi rift system (WSRS), deformation of the NE TP, and lithospheric evolution of the NCC. Beneath the WSRS, the crust gradually thickens from south to north, the lithospheric mantle gradually becomes slower, and the mid-lower crustal velocities are lower in the Weihe Rift, where rifting of the WSRS initiated. We suggest that along-strike variations of the lithospheric structures of the WSRS have played an important role in its multistage evolution. A low-velocity zone (LVZ) in the mid-crust beneath the Qilian Orogen is characterized by relatively higher velocities compared to LVZs in other parts of the TP. Thus, coherent lithospheric deformation may occur due to the high viscosity of the LVZ during early plateau growth, causing strong anisotropy to develop. The western NCC (including the Ordos Block and part of the Alashan Block) shows a high-velocity cratonic root extending to the base of our model. In contrast, the lithosphere of the eastern NCC appears to have been completely modified during the Mesozoic through Cenozoic and presents a thin lithosphere of relatively low velocities underlain by hot asthenosphere. We observed significant upper-mantle heterogeneities in the NCC, which may reflect its diachronous lithospheric modification.
Melt-Enhanced Rejuvenation of Lithospheric Mantle: Insights from the Colorado Plateau

Abstract:The stability of the lithospheric mantle beneath the ancient cratonic cores of continents is primarily a function of chemical modification during the process of melt extraction. Processes by which stable continental lithosphere may be destabilized are not well-understood, although destabilization by thickening and removal of negatively-buoyant lithospheric mantle in "delamination" events has been proposed in a number of tectonic settings. In this paper we explore an alternative process for destabilizing continents, namely, thermal and chemical modification during infiltration of metasomatic fluids and melts into the lithospheric column. We consider observations pertinent to the structure and evolution of the Colorado Plateau within the western United States to argue that the physical and chemical state of the margins of the plateau have been variably modified and destabilized by interaction with melts. In the melt-infiltration process explored here, the primary mechanism for weakening and rejuvenating the plate is through thermal effects and the feedback between deformation and melt-infiltration. We speculate on the nature and geometry of a melt-modulated interaction zone between lithosphere and asthenosphere and the seismically-observable consequences of variable melt-infiltration into the margins of regions of thick, stable lithosphere such as the Colorado Plateau and the Archean Wyoming Province within North America.

Seismic Evidence for Stepwise Lithospheric Delamination Beneath the Tibetan Plateau

Abstract:Several models were proposed to account for the tectonic evolution of Tibetan Plateau, among which delamination of the Tibetan lithosphere is suggested to be a leading process. However, direct evidence for the removed Tibetan lithosphere in the deep mantle remains highly lacking. Here we image the mantle transition zone (MTZ) structure beneath western Tibet and Himalaya by common conversion point stacking of 25254 receiver functions (RFs) with unprecedented clarity. One striking feature is the significant depression (15-20 km) of 660-km discontinuity beneath Himalaya, which indicates the presence of the detached Lhasa lithospheric mantle (similar to 26 Ma) at the bottom of the MTZ. Our results also show similar to 15 km uplift of 410-km discontinuity (d410) and small d410 amplitude beneath western Tibet, which we ascribe to the more recently delaminated Qiangtang lithosphere (similar to 15 Ma). Furthermore, the small dependence of d410 amplitude on frequency indicates that the MTZ is anhydrous in the study area.
Lithospheric Structures Beneath the Western Mongolian Plateau: Insight from S Wave Receiver Function

Abstract:The Mongolian Plateau is located in the western segment of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt. In the Cenozoic, the western plateau was affected by the India-Asian collision; the Hangay Dome of a low-relief plateau has been formed. However, the mechanism of the uplift of the plateau and particularly the Hangay Dome is debated. In this study, we image the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary (LAB) with S wave receiver functions. The LAB is much shallower beneath the western Mongolian Plateau (-80?90 km) than beneath the North China Craton (-150 km) and Siberian Craton (-180 km). We also found another possible deep LAB at 200?250 km depths beneath the Hangay Dome, indicating a lithospheric delamination beneath western Mongolia. Thus we conclude that the consequential asthenospheric upwelling caused the tectonic uplift of the Hangay Dome.
A Reference Model of Crustal Thickness and Vp/Vs of Western Canada

Abstract:The Canadian Cordillera marks a transition region from the current plate boundary through the Phanerozoic Cordilleran orogen to the Precambrian cratons. Knowledge of the subsurface structure of western Canada has been greatly advanced by seismological investigations during the past two decades, pioneered by the Lithoprobe project and, more recently, by regional passive seismic arrays. In this study, we construct a new model (WCANM22) of crustal thickness and P- to S-wave velocity ratio, or V-p/V-s, by compiling receiver function data from 473 stations and existing constraints from over 2,600-km long active source experiments. Our model covers a broad swath (about 1/4) of the land area of North America (105 degrees-140 degrees W, 48 degrees-72 degrees N) and shows an overall flat Moho beneath the Cordillera with an average depth of similar to 36 km and a standard deviation of 3 km across orogenic belts. This study provides a comprehensive catalog of V-p/V-s in western Canada and reveals a moderate correlation between Poisson's ratio and the age of crustal domains. The average V-p/V-s values are 1.72, 1.79, and 1.82 for the Phanerozoic Cordillera, Proterozoic Cratons, and Archean-aged Medicine Hat Block, respectively, suggesting continued modifications to crustal composition through episodic tectonothermal events. This distinct trend in western Canada sheds new light on the debated role of secular changes in the composition of continental crust. Plain Language Summary The crust of western Canada consists of complex tectonic domains that collided during a protracted geological history dating back to 4 billion years ago. To uncover crustal structures and the associated tectonic processes, we systematically determine the depth to the base of the crust (Moho depth) and compressional-to-shear seismic wave speed ratio (V-p/V-s ) beneath 473 seismic stations integrated with the results from existing active source experiments. Along a northwest-southeast profile, V-p/V-s ratios exhibit a gradually increasing trend with the age of the crust. This variation in V-p/V-s may be caused by modifications to the crustal composition during the geological evolution of western Canada.
Tectonics of the Colorado Plateau and Its Margins

Abstract:The Cenozoic Colorado Plateau physiographic province overlies multiple Precambrian provinces. Its ∼2-km elevation rim surrounds an ∼1.6-km elevation core that is underlain by thicker crust and lithospheric mantle, with a sharp structural transition ∼100 km concentrically inboard of the physiographic boundary on all but its northeastern margin. The region was uplifted in three episodes: ∼70–50 Ma uplift above sea level driven by flat-slab subduction; ∼38–23 Ma uplift associated with voluminous regional magmatism and slab removal, and less than 20 Ma uplift associated with inboard propagation of basaltic magmatism that tracked convective erosion of the lithospheric core. Neogene uplift helped integrate the Colorado River from the Rockies at 11 Ma to the Gulf of California by ∼5 Ma. The sharp rim-to-core transition defined by geological and geophysical data sets suggests a young transient plateau that is uplifting as it shrinks to merge with surrounding regions of postorogenic extension. ▪ The Colorado Plateau's iconic landscapes were shaped during its 70-million-year, still-enigmatic, tectonic evolution characterized by uplift and erosion. ▪ Uplift of the Colorado Plateau from sea level took place in three episodes, the youngest of which has been ongoing for the past 20 million years. ▪ Tectonism across the Colorado Plateau's nearest plate margin (the base of the plate!) is driving uplift and volcanism and enhancing its rugged landscapes. ▪ The bowl-shaped Colorado Plateau province is defined by ongoing uplift and an inboard sweep of magmatism around its margins. ▪ The keel of the Colorado Plateau is being thinned as the North American plate moves southwest through the underlying mantle. Plate‐Scale Imaging of Eastern US Reveals Ancient and Ongoing Continental Deformation

Abstract:Eastern North America was constructed over several Wilson cycles, culminating in the breakup of Pangea. Previous seismological imaging lacked the resolution to depict precisely how ancient tectonic boundaries manifest throughout the lithosphere, how continental breakup modified the plate, or how ongoing mantle dynamics shapes the continental margin. We present a high‐resolution, plate‐scale seismic tomography model of the eastern US by combining an unprecedented suite of complementary data sets in a Bayesian framework. These data provide detailed resolution from crust to asthenosphere, identifying the base of the lithosphere and mid‐lithospheric discontinuities. The plate thins in steps that align with ancient orogens. The lithospheric step at the Appalachian front is associated with cells of mantle upwellings, likely edge‐driven convection, that erode the base of the plate and shape modern Appalachian topography. Low‐velocity structures in the lithospheric‐mantle align with the Grenville front and may be remnants of Rodinia assembly.

Abstract:The mechanism that causes the rapid uplift and active magmatism of the Hoh-Xil Basin in the northern Tibetan Plateau and hence the outward growth of the proto-plateau is highly debated, more specifically, over the relationship between deep dynamics and surface uplift. Until recently the Hoh-Xil Basin remained uncovered by seismic networks due to inaccessibility. Here, based on linear seismic arrays across the Hoh-Xil Basin, we present a three-dimensional S-wave velocity (VS) model of the crust and uppermost mantle structure beneath the Tibetan Plateau from ambient noise tomography. This model exhibits a widespread partially molten crust in the northern Tibetan Plateau but only isolated pockets in the south manifested as low-VS anomalies in the middle crust. The spatial correlation of the widespread low-VS anomalies with strong uppermost mantle low-VS anomalies and young exposed magmatic rocks in the Hoh-Xil Basin suggests that the plateau grew through lithospheric mantle removal and its driven magmatism.

Abstract:High‐elevation, low‐relief continental plateaus are major topographic features and profoundly influence atmospheric circulation, sediment transport and storage, and biodiversity. Although orogenic surface‐uplift mechanisms for modern continental plateaus near known plate margins like Tibet are well‐characterized, they cannot account for examples in intracontinental settings like the Colorado Plateau. In contrast to canonical plate‐tectonic uplift mechanisms, broad‐scale hydration‐induced metasomatism of the lower crust has been suggested to reduce its density and increase its buoyancy sufficiently to contribute to isostatic uplift. However, the relationships between key petrophysical properties in these environments are not fully quantified, which limits application of this model. Here, we develop a series of petrological models that describe the petrological and topographic effects of fluid–rock interaction in non‐deforming continental crust of varying composition. We apply an open‐system petrological modelling framework that utilizes reactive‐transport calculations to determine the spatial and temporal scales over which mineralogic transformations take place compared with the magnitude of infiltration of aqueous fluids derived from devolatilization of subducting oceanic lithosphere. The buoyancy effect of hydration‐induced de‐densification is most significant for metabasic lower crust, intermediate for metapelitic crust, and minimal for granodioritic crust. We apply these results to a case study of the ~2 km‐high Colorado Plateau and demonstrate that under ideal conditions, hydration of its lower–middle crust by infiltrating aqueous fluids released by the Farallon slab during Cenozoic low‐angle subduction could have uplifted the plateau surface by a maximum of ~1 km over 16 Myr. However, realistically, although hydration likely has a measurable effect on surface tectonics, the uplift of orogenic plateaus is likely dominantly controlled by other factors, such as lithospheric delamination.

Hot Cordilleran hinterland promoted lower crust mobility and decoupling of Laramide deformation

Abstract:The Late Cretaceous to Paleogene Laramide orogen in the North American Cordillera involved deformation >1,000 km from the plate margin that has been attributed to either plate-boundary end loading or basal traction exerted on the upper plate from the subducted Farallon flat slab. Prevailing tectonic models fail to explain the relative absence of Laramide-aged (ca. 90-60 Ma) contractional deformation within the Cordillera hinterland. Based on Raman spectroscopy of carbonaceous material thermometry and literature data from the restored upper 15-20 km of the Cordilleran crust we reconstruct the Late Cretaceous thermal architecture of the hinterland. Interpolation of compiled temperature data (n = 200) through a vertical crustal column reveals that the hinterland experienced a continuous but regionally elevated, upper-crustal geothermal gradient of >40 °C/km during Laramide orogenesis, consistent with peak metamorphic conditions and synchronous peraluminous granitic plutonism. The hot and partially melted hinterland promoted lower crust mobility and crust-mantle decoupling during flat-slab traction.
High‐Resolution Broadband Lg Attenuation Structure of the Anatolian Crust and Its Implications for Mantle Upwelling and Plateau Uplift

Abstract:The Anatolian Plateau, currently experiencing rapid uplift and westward escape, records both the termination of oceanic subduction and the conversion to continental collision. The crustal response to the transition of the subduction environment from eastern to western Anatolia can be inferred by the seismic velocity and attenuation structures. With this study, we construct a broadband Lg‐wave attenuation model for the Anatolian Plateau and use it to constrain lateral crust heterogeneities linked to this transition. Crustal Lg attenuation links late Cenozoic magmatism with asthenospheric upwelling by characterizing the lithospheric thermal structure. The widely distributed strong attenuation observed in eastern Anatolia may be related to the crustal partial melting due to mantle upwelling after the delamination and subsequent break‐off of the Bitlis slab. Lithospheric dripping in central Anatolia likely facilitates the mantle flows through the window between the Cyprus and Aegean slabs, which results in the piecemeal low anomaly in central Anatolia.

Abstract:Geodynamic models predict that deep mantle buoyancy forces exert important control on the vertical motion history of continents, but it is difficult to isolate the effects of dynamic topography in the geologic record. Here we apply low temperature thermochronometry to exposed Precambrian basement samples across an similar to 1300 km long tract of the western Canadian shield to resolve the thermal imprint, thickness, spatial extent, and evolution of missing portions of the Phanerozoic sedimentary record. New and published apatite (U-Th)/He and fission-track data from three study areas indicate a pronounced heating and cooling event in Paleozoic-early Mesozoic time. This pattern, coupled with geologic observations, indicates that an extensive region of the continent was inundated and buried by sedimentary rocks in Paleozoic time, followed by significant Paleozoic-early Mesozoic unroofing that removed these strata from the rock record. This burial and unroofing history is opposite that expected from eustatic sea level chronologies. A process that can induce long-wavelength (>1000 km) elevation change in a continental interior region without significant crustal deformation therefore appears required to explain our results. These characteristics of the vertical motions largely eliminate plate margin tectonism as a probable mechanism, and point toward dynamic topography as a likely cause.To evaluate the hypothesis of a dynamic control on the rise and fall of this cratonic region, we compare the 400 to 150 Ma burial and unroofing histories with the evolution of dynamic topography in the western Canadian shield predicted by a three-dimensional model of thermochemical convection. The histories of burial and unroofing mimic the predicted history of elevation change to first order, indicating that dynamic topography is a viable cause for the vertical motions. A phase of significant burial before similar to 350 Ma may be due to cold mantle downwellings that produced subsidence during Pangea assembly, followed by unroofing between similar to 350 Ma and 250 Ma induced by development of warm mantle upwellings after Pangea amalgamation. While a fuller range of mantle dynamic models must be explored to more completely understand the causes of cryptic elevation change in the North American continental interior, our study highlights the utility of cratonic thermochronometry data for testing and calibrating dynamic models, and for evaluating mantle and surface process interactions deep in Earth history. Abstract:How the Tibetan Plateau deformed in the Indian-Eurasian continental collision has been long debated, more specifically, over the relationship between the deep processes and surface structural complexity. Here, we use ambient noise tomography to obtain a high-resolution crustal S-wave velocity model beneath the Tibetan Plateau and adjacent areas involving a comprehensive dataset from over 500 stations. Our images reveal that the crustal flow should be in a limited scale according to the intermittent low-velocity zones (LVZs) observed in the middle crust at 20–40-km depth of the Tibetan Plateau. The distributions and strengths of LVZs further imply that different deep processes promote the surface deformation in various regions of the Tibetan Plateau. The LVZs in the northern plateau, collocated potassic magmatism and low velocity anomalies in the upper mantle, should be originated from the lithospheric delamination. However, in the southern plateau, the S-wave velocity showed an apparent lateral segmentation feature correlated with the north–south trending rifts. The feature indicates that the LVZs were likely controlled by the lateral tearing of the subducted Indian mantle lithosphere, which promotes the rifting deformation. Moreover, the LVZ in the central Tibet should have contributed to the formation of the conjugate strike-slip fault system. In the Tarim Basin, our model showed a high-velocity anomaly in the lower crust that may be related to ancient mantle plume activity.

Insight into the Evolution of the Eastern Margin of the Wyoming Craton from Complex, Laterally Variable Shear Wave Splitting

Abstract:Dense seismic arrays such as EarthScope's Transportable Array (TA) have enabled high-resolution seismic observations that show the structure of cratonic lithosphere is more heterogeneous and complex than previously assumed. In this study, we pair TA data with data from the Bighorn Arch Seismic Experiment and the Crust and lithosphere Investigation of the Easternmost expression of the Laramide Orogeny (CIELO) to provide unprecedented detail on the seismic anisotropic structure of the eastern margin of the Wyoming Craton, where several orogens emerged from nominally strong cratonic lithosphere during the Laramide Orogeny. In this study, we use the splitting of teleseismic shear waves to characterize fabrics associated with deformation in the Earth's crust and mantle. We constrain distinct anisotropic domains in the study area, and forward modeling shows that each of these domains can be explained by a single layer of anisotropy. Most significantly, we find a fast direction in the southern part of the Powder River Basin, which we refer to as the Thunder Basin Block (TBB), that deviates from absolute plate motion (APM). This change in splitting behavior coincides with changes in other modeled geophysical observations, such as active source P-wave velocity models, potential field modeling, and seismic attenuation analysis, which all show a significant change moving from the Bighorn Mountains to the TBB. We argue that these results correspond to structure predating the Laramide Orogeny, and most likely indicate a Neoarchean boundary preserved within the lithosphere.

Abstract:Most previous studies of the Tibetan Plateau have focused on the processes of crustal thickening and subsequent outward growth. However, lithospheric structure across the tectonic boundaries of the plateau has not yet been fully imaged, and therefore, how geological structures evolved in association with the lateral expansion of the margins remains unclear. Here together with interpretation of regional aeromagnetic anomalies, we employ a recently acquired 165km long deep seismic reflection image that crosses the northeastern flank of the Tibetan Plateau. The resulting crustal architecture suggests that crustal shortening is a primary driver for plateau uplift of northeastern Tibet and that the Xiaoguan Shan to the east of the Liupan Shan belt marks the easternmost edge of the strata that has been affected by the northeastward growth of the plateau. In addition, decoupled crustal deformation owing to differential structural integrity has been accommodated during the subsequent northeastward growth of the plateau.

Abstract:Current end-member models for the geodynamic evolution of orogenic plateaus predict (a) slow and steady rise during crustal shortening and ablative subduction (i.e., continuous removal) of the lower lithosphere or (b) rapid surface uplift following shortening, which is associated with punctuated removal of dense lower lithosphere and/or lower crustal flow. This review integrates results from recent studies of the modern lithospheric structure, geologic evolution, and surface uplift history of the Central Andean Plateau to evaluate the geodynamic processes involved in forming it. Comparison of the timing, magnitude, and distribution of shortening and surface uplift, in combination with other geologic evidence, highlights the pulsed nature of plateau growth. We discuss specific regions and time periods that show evidence for end-member geodynamic processes, including middle–late Miocene surface uplift of the southern Eastern Cordillera and Altiplano associated with shortening and ablative subduction, latest Oligocene–early Miocene and late Miocene–early Pliocene punctuated removal of dense lower lithosphere in the Eastern Cordillera and Altiplano, and late Miocene–early Pliocene crustal flow in the central and northern Altiplano.
