Abstract:Earth's lower mantle is generally believed to be seismically and chemically homogeneous because most of the key seismic parameters can be explained using a simplified mineralogical model at expected pressure-temperature conditions. However, recent high-resolution tomographic images have revealed seismic and chemical stratification in the middle-to-lower parts of the lower mantle. Thus far, the mechanism for the compositional stratification and seismic inhomogeneity, especially their relationship with the speciation of iron in the lower mantle, remains poorly understood. We have built a complete and integrated thermodynamic model of iron and aluminum chemistry for lower mantle conditions and from this model has emerged a stratified picture of the valence, spin, and composition profile in the lower mantle. Within this picture the lower mantle has an upper region with Fe3+-enriched bridgmanite with high-spin ferropericlase and metallic Fe and a lower region with low-spin, iron-enriched ferropericlase coexisting with iron-depleted bridgmanite and almost no metallic Fe. The transition between the regions occurs at a depth of around 1600 km and is driven by the spin transition in ferropericlase, which significantly changes the iron partitioning and speciation to one that favors Fe2+ in ferropericlase and suppresses Fe3+ and metallic iron formation. These changes lead to lowered bulk sound velocity by 3-4% around the middle-lower mantle and enhanced density by similar to 1% toward the lowermost mantle. The predicted chemically and seismically stratified lower mantle differs dramatically from the traditional homogeneous model.
Confirming a Pyrolitic Lower Mantle Using Self‐consistent Pressure Scales and New Constraints on CaSiO3 Perovskite

Abstract:In this study, we have examined the lower mantle composition and mineralogy by modeling the density ( ρ ), bulk sound velocity ( V Φ ), and dln ρ /dln V Φ profiles of candidate lower mantle minerals using literature and new experimental equation of state (EoS) results. For CaSiO 3 perovskite, complimentary synchrotron X‐ray diffraction measurements in a laser‐heated diamond anvil cell were conducted up to 156 GPa between 1200 K and 2600 K to provide more reliable constraints on the thermal EoS parameters. These new experimental results as well as literature P‐V‐T data sets are systematically analyzed using an internally self‐consistent pressure scale. We have modeled ρ , V Φ , and dln ρ /dln V Φ profiles of the lower mantle with representative pyrolitic and chondritic compositional models in which the effect of Fe spin transition in ferropericlase is also taken into account. Our modeling results show that a pyrolitic lower mantle with an aggregate mineralogy of 75 vol % bridgmanite, 17 vol % ferropericlase, and 8 vol % CaSiO 3 perovskite produces ρ and V Φ profiles in better agreement with preliminary reference Earth model than a lower mantle with a chondritic composition. The modeled ρ , V Φ , and dln ρ /dln V Φ are mainly affected by the relative ratio of bridgmanite and ferropericlase but are not sensitive to the variation of the CaSiO 3 perovskite content. In addition, the spin crossover of Fe in ferropericlase can greatly raise the value of dln ρ /dln V Φ in the middle lower mantle, which is useful in detecting the presence of ferropericlase in the region. Based on these new mineral physical constraints and radial seismic structure, our study suggests the lower mantle is pyrolitic, which is chemically indistinguishable from the upper mantle.
Velocity Structure and Composition of the Lower Mantle with Spin Crossover in Ferropericlase

Abstract:The composition of the Earth's lower mantle (LM) is critical in understanding the Earth's interior and dynamics. Previous reports on the composition of the LM are controversial. The composition of LM, constrained here using high-temperature and high-pressure data of the velocities and density of minerals from first-principles calculations, spans a large range: from pyrolite with similar to 15% ferropericlase (Fp) in weight (wt %) to perovskitic-rich composition with similar to 10wt % Fp. Any composition well constrained by preliminary reference Earth model (PREM) has a sufficient amount of Fp to exhibit the positive temperature dependence of V Phi (= root K/rho) at the middle LM, leading to the insensitivity of V-P to temperature. The depth at which V-P is insensitive to temperature variation deepens significantly with increasing temperature because the spin transition in Fp has the positive Clapeyron slope (similar to 17MPa/K). The Large Low Shear Velocity Provinces below Africa is estimated to be similar to 750K higher than the ambient mantle.
Elasticity and Anisotropy of the Pyrite-Type FeO2H-FeO2 System in Earth's Lowermost Mantle

Abstract:The pyrite-type FeO2H-FeO2 system has been experimentally confirmed to be stable in Earth’s lowermost mantle but there is limited information about its physical properties at high pressures constraining our understanding of its potential geophysical implications for the deep Earth. Here, static calculations demonstrate that the pyrite-type FeO2H-FeO2 system has a high density and Poisson’s ratio and ultra-low seismic velocities at conditions of Earth’s lowermost mantle. It provides a plausible mechanism for the origin of ultra-low velocity zones at Earth’s D″ layer. The incorporation of hydrogen in the pyrite-type FeO2H-FeO2 system tends to decrease the S wave velocity (VS) but increase the bulk sound velocity (VΦ), and can potentially explain the observed anti-correlation of VS and VΦ in the lowermost mantle. Additionally, FeO2H exhibits nearly isotropic whereas FeO2 is highly anisotropic, which may help understand some seismic anisotropies at the core-mantle boundary.

Abstract:Significance Presence of iron in Earth’s lower mantle may critically affect its physical properties and thermochemical structures. However, its effects on thermal conductivity and dynamics of deep mantle remain unknown. We studied lattice thermal conductivity of lower-mantle ferropericlase to 120 GPa using ultrafast optics. We observed an enhanced iron substitution effect in the low-spin iron-rich ferropericlase, with thermal conductivity that significantly drops across spin transition. Combined with bridgmanite data, we provided a self-consistent radial profile of lower-mantle thermal conductivity, which is dominated by pressure, temperature, and iron effects and shows a twofold increase throughout the lower mantle. If ultralow velocity zones are hot and strongly enriched in iron, their exceptionally low thermal conductivity will delay their cooling, influencing lowermost mantle dynamics.

Abstract:The mineralogical constitution of the Earth’s mantle dictates the geophysical and geochemical properties of this region. Previous models of a perovskite-dominant lower mantle have been built on the assumption that the entire lower mantle down to the top of the D″ layer contains ferromagnesian silicate [(Mg,Fe)SiO 3 ] with nominally 10 mole percent Fe. On the basis of experiments in laser-heated diamond anvil cells, at pressures of 95 to 101 gigapascals and temperatures of 2200 to 2400 kelvin, we found that such perovskite is unstable; it loses its Fe and disproportionates to a nearly Fe-free MgSiO 3 perovskite phase and an Fe-rich phase with a hexagonal structure. This observation has implications for enigmatic seismic features beyond ~2000 kilometers depth and suggests that the lower mantle may contain previously unidentified major phases.

Abstract:Mineralogical modeling of the lower mantle critically depends on thermoelastic parameters, such as the expansion coefficient and the Gruneisen parameters. Significant experimental discrepancies exist for these properties of silicate perovskite. We calculate density and seismic velocities of mineral assemblages of (Mg, Fe)SiO3 perovskite and (Mg, Fe)O magnesiowustite at lower-mantle pressures and temperatures. The results are compared with seismological results (PREM; Preliminary Reference Earth Model) and a statistical test of goodness of fit is applied. We plot the chemical composition of the lower mantle as a function of the thermoelastic parameters of perovskite. The inferred chemical composition depends on the adopted properties. The present uncertainity in the data accommodates most proposed compositional models. A better understanding of lower-mantle mineralogy requires better thermoelastic data, particularly of silicate perovskite. A preferred compositional model is constrained by combining mineral physics with seismological observations of the Earth's deep interior. It appears that the upper mantle and lower mantle are chemically distinct. A chondritic lower mantle cannot be ruled out with present data.
Elastic Properties of Fe-bearing Akimotoite at Mantle Conditions: Implications for Composition and Temperature in Lower Mantle Transition Zone

Abstract:The pyrolite model, which can reproduce the upper-mantle seismic velocity and density profiles, was suggested to have significantly lower velocities and density than seismic models in the lower mantle transition zone (MTZ). This argument has been taken as mineral-physics evidence for a compositionally distinct lower MTZ. However, previous studies only estimated the pyrolite velocities and density along a one-dimension (1D) geotherm and never considered the effect of lateral temperature heterogeneity. Because the majorite-perovskite-akimotoite triple point is close to the normal mantle geotherm in the lower MTZ, the lateral low-temperature anomaly can result in the presence of a significant fraction of akimotoite in pyrolitic lower MTZ. In this study, we reported the elastic properties of Fe-bearing akimotoite based on first-principles calculations. Combining with literature data, we found that the seismic velocities and density of the pyrolite model can match well those in the lower MTZ when the lateral temperature heterogeneity is modeled by a Gaussian distribution with a standard deviation of ∼100 K and an average temperature of dozens of K higher than the triple point of MgSiO3. We suggest that a harzburgite-rich lower MTZ is not required and the whole mantle convection is expected to be more favorable globally.

Abstract:Abstract We use an ab initio based thermodynamic model to study the Fe partitioning ( K D PPv-Fp  = (Fe/Mg) PPv /(Fe/Mg) Fp )) and Fe 3+ concentration in the Al-bearing and Al-free post-perovskite - ferropericlase (PPv-Fp) systems, and results are compared to a similar recent model (Xu et al., 2017) for bridgmanite (Bm). Lower mantle (lower oxygen fugacity) and oxidizing experimental conditions (higher oxygen fugacity) are considered. Under lower mantle conditions, we predict that the Fe 3+ concentration in both Al-free and Al-bearing PPv-Fp systems is very limited, due to the Fe 3+ and Fe 0 recombination and Fe 2+ production ( 2 Fe 3 + + Fe 0 → 3 Fe 2 + ). This effect leads to the majority of the total iron in the PPv-Fp systems being Fe 2+ and the lowermost mantle is predicted to have little metallic iron. The Fe 3+ content in PPv is approximately 3 times smaller than in Bm, which will lead to a large reduction of the amount of metallic iron in the lower mantle below the Bm/PPv transition. We also predict very little Fe in the PPv ( K D PPv-Fp  = (Fe/Mg) PPv /(Fe/Mg) Fp 3+ and more up to a 3 times increase in Fe partitioning coefficient compared to lower mantle conditions, suggesting that one must be cautious in applying results from more oxidizing experimental studies to lower mantle conditions. These results will help researchers understand the Fe chemistry in lower mantle phases both under the Earth’s lowermost mantle and laboratory experimental conditions.

Abstract:First-principles calculations and experiments are used to identify a stable, pyrite-structured iron oxide at 76 gigapascals and 1,800 kelvin that holds an excessive amount of oxygen and to show that goethite (rust) decomposes under these deep lower-mantle conditions to form an iron oxide and release hydrogen; this process provides another way to interpret the origin of seismic and geochemical anomalies in the deep lower mantle of Earth.
An Overview of the Experimental Studies on the Electrical Conductivity of Major Minerals in the Upper Mantle and Transition Zone

Abstract:In this paper, we present the recent progress in the experimental studies of the electrical conductivity of dominant nominally anhydrous minerals in the upper mantle and mantle transition zone of Earth, namely, olivine, pyroxene, garnet, wadsleyite and ringwoodite. The main influence factors, such as temperature, pressure, water content, oxygen fugacity, and anisotropy are discussed in detail. The dominant conduction mechanisms of Fe-bearing silicate minerals involve the iron-related small polaron with a relatively large activation enthalpy and the hydrogen-related defect with lower activation enthalpy. Specifically, we mainly focus on the variation of oxygen fugacity on the electrical conductivity of anhydrous and hydrous mantle minerals, which exhibit clearly different charge transport processes. In representative temperature and pressure environments, the hydrogen of nominally anhydrous minerals can tremendously enhance the electrical conductivity of the upper mantle and transition zone, and the influence of trace structural water (or hydrogen) is substantial. In combination with the geophysical data of magnetotelluric surveys, the laboratory-based electrical conductivity measurements can provide significant constraints to the water distribution in Earth's interior.

The High-Pressure Electronic Spin Transition in Iron: Potential Impacts Upon Mantle Mixing

Abstract:At the Rayleigh number appropriate to Earth's mantle, radial heat transport is dominated by solid state thermal convection. Because of the large number of physical properties required to determine the Rayleigh number, and because these properties are expected to be (perhaps strong) functions of pressure and temperature (P-T), laboratory measurements of them under the high pressure and temperature conditions that occur in the deep Earth are of fundamental importance. Recent experimental data demonstrate that an electronic spin transition in iron that occurs at midmantle depths results in significant changes in the physical properties of the ferropericlase component of mantle mineralogy. Additional recent results suggest that it may also exist in the dominant perovskite component. Using control volume based numerical models we investigate the impacts on mantle mixing of this spin transition through its influence on the most important subset of these physical properties, namely density, thermal expansivity, bulk modulus and heat capacity. Our numerical model results demonstrate that this electronic transition enhances mixing in the lower regions of the lower mantle by enhancing the vigor of rising plumes. The lowermost region of the mantle is slightly warmed and the upper mantle slightly cooled by spin-induced effects. However, the spin crossover in the lower mantle appears not to significantly influence mantle layering. Due to the competition that could exist between the strength of the spin-induced thermodynamic properties of ferropericlase and perovskite, cold descending thermal anomalies could stagnate at middle-to-lower mantle depths and lead to the occurrence of "mid mantle avalanches."
First-principles study of intermediate-spin ferrous iron in the Earth's lower mantle

Abstract:Spin crossover of iron is of central importance in solid Earth geophysics. It impacts all physical properties of minerals that altogether constitute ∼95 vol% of the Earth's lower mantle: ferropericlase [(Mg,Fe)O] and Fe-bearing magnesium silicate (MgSiO3) perovskite. Despite great strides made in the past decade, the existence of an intermediate-spin (IS) state in ferrous iron (Fe2+) (with total electron spin S=1) and its possible role in the pressure-induced spin crossover in these lower-mantle minerals still remain controversial. Using density functional theory + self-consistent Hubbard U (DFT+Usc) calculations, we investigate all possible types of IS states of Fe2+ in (Mg,Fe)O and (Mg,Fe)SiO3 perovskite. Among the possible IS states in these minerals, the most probable IS state has an electronic configuration that significantly reduces the electron overlap and the iron nuclear quadrupole splitting (QS). These most probable IS states, however, are still energetically disfavored, and their QSs are inconsistent with Mössbauer spectra. We therefore conclude that IS Fe2+ is highly unlikely in the Earth's lower mantle.

Abstract:AbstractEarth’s lower mantle is a potential water reservoir. The physical and chemical properties of the region are in part controlled by the Fe3+/ΣFe ratio and total iron content in bridgmanite. However, the water effect on the chemistry of bridgmanite remains unclear. We carry out laser-heated diamond anvil cell experiments under hydrous conditions and observe dominant Fe2+ in bridgmanite (Mg, Fe)SiO3 above 105 GPa under the normal geotherm conditions corresponding to depth > 2300 km, whereas Fe3+-rich bridgmanite is obtained at lower pressures. We further observe FeO in coexistence with hydrous NiAs-type SiO2 under similar conditions, indicating that the stability of ferrous iron is a combined result of H2O effect and high pressure. The stability of ferrous iron in bridgmanite under hydrous conditions would provide an explanation for the nature of the low-shear-velocity anomalies in the deep lower mantle. In addition, entrainment from a hydrous dense layer may influence mantle plume dynamics and contribute to variations in the redox conditions of the mantle.

Abstract:On the basis of mineral assemblage, mineralogy, petrology, and major, trace elemental and isotopic geochemistry of the underplated granulite- and eclogite-facies accumulate, peridotite and pyroxenite xenoliths entrained in Hannuoba Cenozoic basalts, this work constrained the petrological constituents for the crust-mantle transitional zone, which is supported by the results of high-temperature and pressure velocity experiments on rocks and geophysics deep survey. Present lower part of lower crust is mainly composed of granulite-facies mafic accumulates (dominantly plagioclase websterite) and crust-mantle transitional zone dominantly composed of eclogite-facies pyroxenites with or without garnet and spinel lherzolites; Archaean terrain granulite is only nominally early lower crust. Magma underplating in the crust-mantle boundary led to the crustal vertical accretion and the formation of the crust-mantle transitional zone, which is a significant mechanism for the chemical adjustment of the crust-mantle boundary since the Phanerozoic.
Insights into core-mantle differentiation from bulk Earth melt simulations

Abstract:The earth is thought to have gone through complex physicochemical changes during the accretion and magma ocean stages. To better understand this evolution process at the fundamental level, we investigate the behavior of a bulk earth melt system by simulating the composition Fe35.7Mg19.0Si15.2O30.2 (in wt%) at high pressure. A deep neural network potential trained by first-principles data can enable accurate molecular dynamics simulation of large supercells that greatly enhances sampling for reliable evaluation of elemental partitioning. Our simulated system undergoes a phase separation in which the four elements clump together to different extents into two major domains. Based on the coordination and space-decomposition analyses, the inferred composition at 3000 K and 29.1 GPa contains 96.2, 0.1, 1.9 and 1.7 wt% of Fe, Mg, Si, and O, respectively, for the one domain and the corresponding elemental proportions are 3.0, 29.7, 22.0, and 45.3 wt% for the other domain. The predicted segregation thus leads to the formation of an iron-rich phase which corresponds to the metallic core and a magma ocean phase which corresponds to the silicate mantle. The metallic domain incorporates more silicon and more oxygen whereas the magma ocean domain gains more iron oxides at higher temperatures. Our predicted compositions compare favorably with those derived from experimental work for the equilibrium state metal and silicate reacting under high-pressure conditions.

Abstract:High-pressure diamond-cell experiments indicate that the iron-magnesium partitioning between (Fe,Mg)SiO3-perovskite and magnesiowustite in Earth's lower mantle depends on the pressure, temperature, bulk iron/magnesium ratio, and ferric iron content, The perovskite stability field expands with increasing pressure and temperature. The ferric iron component preferentially dissolves in perovskite and raises the apparent total iron content but had little effect on the partitioning of the ferrous iron, The ferrous iron depletes in perovskite at the top of the lower mantle and gradually increases at greater depth. These changes in iron-magnesium composition should affect geochemical and geophysical properties of the deep interior.
Stability Of Ferrous-Iron-Rich Bridgmanite Under Reducing Midmantle Conditions

Abstract:Our current understanding of the electronic state of iron in lower-mantle minerals leads to a considerable disagreement in bulk sound speed with seismic measurements if the lower mantle has the same composition as the upper mantle (pyrolite). In the modeling studies, the content and oxidation state of Fe in the minerals have been assumed to be constant throughout the lower mantle. Here, we report high-pressure experimental results in which Fe becomes dominantly Fe2+ in bridgmanite synthesized at 40-70 GPa and 2,000 K, while it is in mixed oxidation state (Fe3+ /Sigma(Fe) = 60%) in the samples synthesized below and above the pressure range. Little Fe3+ in bridgmanite combined with the strong partitioning of Fe2+ into ferropericlase will alter the Fe content for these minerals at 1,100- to 1,700-km depths. Our calculations show that the change in iron content harmonizes the bulk sound speed of pyrolite with the seismic values in this region. Our experiments support no significant changes in bulk composition for most of the mantle, but possible changes in physical properties and processes (such as viscosity and mantle flow patterns) in the midmantle.
