Abstract:Exploring white spaces in the indoor environment has been recognized as a promising way to satisfy the rapid growth of the wireless spectrum demand. Although a few indoor white space exploration systems have been proposed in the past few years, they mainly focused on exploring white spaces at a small set of candidate locations. However, what we need are the white space availabilities at arbitrary indoor locations instead of only those at the candidate locations. In this paper, we first perform an indoor TV spectra measurement to study the characteristics of indoor white spaces in a fine-grained way. Then, we propose a Fine-gRained Indoor white Space Estimation mechanism, called FRISE, which could accurately estimate the white space availabilities at arbitrary indoor locations. FRISE mainly consists of a method to determine the positions of candidate locations and an accurate spatial interpolation algorithm. Furthermore, we evaluate the performance of FRISE based on real-world measured data. The evaluation results show that FRISE outperforms the existing methods in estimating white spaces at arbitrary indoor locations.
MISEN: A Mobile Indoor White Space Exploration Method.

Abstract:With the exponential growth of the demand for wireless communications, people are faced with the shortage of spectrum resources. To tackle this problem, researchers consider about the further usage of TV channels with low occupancy, referred as white spaces. In this paper, we propose a mobile platform based indoor white space exploration method, namely MISEN, to profile the white space distribution inside a building. In this method, we design a tensor completion based algorithm based on the framework of Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) to recover a complete spectrum map, where we consider the linear dependency of white space information. Moreover, we build a prototype of MISEN and evaluate the performance in real scene. It is shown that MISEN senses on average 18:7% more white spaces with 20:0% less false alarm rate than the state of art methods.

Abstract:We present a system utilizing narrow band software defined radio to detect the moving human through walls, and give some motion details, such as motion orientation which includes relative moving direction. To achieve high accuracy, FindIt applies Short Time Fourier Transform (STFT) and statistical methods to received signals. In order to adapt to different environments, FindIt uses clustering and classification methods to determine thresholds. Moreover, FindIt provides user-friendly real-time detection results, which can be used as a trigger of high-level functions.

Abstract:Exploring the utilization of white spaces (vacant VHF and UHF TV channels) is a promising way to satisfy the rapid growth of the radio frequency (RF) demand. Although a few outdoor white space exploration methods have been proposed in the past few years, researches that focus on indoor white space exploration just emerge recently. In this paper, we propose a novel cost-efficient indoor white space exploration method by exploiting the location dependence and channel dependence of TV channels' signal strength in indoor environments. We measure the UHF TV channels in a building, and study the temporal and spatial features of indoor white spaces. Based on the extracted features, we design a cost-eficient Indoor White space EXploration mechanism, namely FIWEX. Furthermore, we build a prototype of FIWEX and extensively evaluate its performance in real world environments. The evaluation results show that FIWEX can identify 47.8% more indoor white spaces with 38.4% less false alarms compared with the best known existing solution.

Abstract:Constructing a map of indoor space has many important applications, such as indoor navigation, VR/AR, construction, safety, facility management, and network condition prediction. Existing indoor space mapping requires special hardware (e.g., indoor LiDAR equipment) and well-trained operators. In this paper, we develop a smartphone-based indoor space mapping system that lets a regular user quickly map an indoor space by simply walking around while holding a phone in his/her hand. Our system accurately measures the distance to nearby reflectors, estimates the user's trajectory, and pairs different reflectors the user encounters during the walk to automatically construct the contour. Using extensive evaluation, we show our contour construction is accurate: the median errors are 1.5 cm for a single wall and 6 cm for multiple walls (due to longer trajectory and the higher number of walls). We show that our system provides a median error of 30 cm and a 90-percentile error of 1 m, which is significantly better than the state-of-the-art smartphone acoustic mapping system BatMapper [64], whose corresponding errors are 60 cm and 2.5 m respectively, even after multiple walks. We further show that the constructed indoor contour can be used to predict wireless received signal strength (RSS).

Abstract:Exploration of white spaces has been recognized as a promising way to improve the utilization of wireless spectrums. Especially, indoor white space exploration has been shown to be much more challenging than that in outdoor environment. Most of existing works on indoor white space exploration infer availabilities of TV channels based on the correlations among the channels and locations, which is learned from the training data measured beforehand. However, the process of training data collection normally requires considerable time and devices, as well as human power. In this paper, we perform a measurement of indoor white spaces and study their characteristics. Based on the in-depth understanding of the characteristics, we propose a Training-free Indoor white space exploration MEchanism (TIME). In TIME, we design an algorithm for channel state inference based on Bayesian compressive sensing, as well as an incremental method for deployment of spectrum detectors. Furthermore, we present an algorithm to determine a proper number of spectrum detectors in need. Extensive real-world experiments are conducted to evaluate TIME's performance. The evaluation results demonstrate that TIME achieves competitive performances against the state-of-the-art training-based mechanisms.

Abstract:Exploring and utilizing indoor white spaces (vacant VHF and UHF TV channels) have been recognized as an effective way to satisfy the rapid growth of the radio frequency (RF) demand. Although a few methods of exploring indoor white spaces have been proposed in recent years, they only focus on the exploration of the current indoor white spaces. However, due to the dynamic nature of the spectrum and the time delay in the process of exploration, users often cannot get accurate white space information in time, resulting in issues, such as spectrum utilization conflicts or inadequate white space utilization. To solve the problem, in this paper, we first perform an indoor TV spectrum measurement to study how the spectrum state changes over time and the spatio-temporal-spectral correlation of spectrum. Then, we propose a real-time aCcurate indoOR whiTe spacE predictioN mechanism, called CORTEN. CORTEN can predict the white space distribution for various time spans with high accuracy. Furthermore, we build a prototype of CORTEN and evaluate its performance based on the real-world measured data. The evaluation results show that CORTEN can predict accurately 38.7% more indoor white spaces with 51.3% less false alarms compared with the baseline approach when predicting the white spaces one hour ahead.

Abstract:Mobile indoor localization is the foundation for the location-based features of many pervasive computing applications. Due to the popularity of WiFi networks in indoor environments, WiFi-based indoor localization has been considered to be a promising approach. Despite the feasibility of WiFi-based localization, the existing WiFi-based schemes suffer from the serious problem of low precision. In this paper, we propose a high-precision indoor localization scheme for mobile networks, Mobile Indoor Localization (MIL). Technically, MIL adopts a matrix completion approach which efficiently utilizes the collected information to achieve high localization precision at low computation cost. Our experimental results indicate that MIL outperforms the state-of-the-art mobile indoor localization schemes in terms of localization precision.
WIN FM Indoor White Space Network Design

Abstract:The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) released the final rule to approve of TV white spaces (TVWS), i.e., locally vacant TV channels, for unlicensed use in 2010. This TV spectrum will mitigate the shortage of wireless spectrum resources and provide opportunities for new applications. TVWS differ from the conventional Wi-Fi spectrum in three aspects: spectrum fragmentation, spatial variation, and temporal variation. These differences make the network design over TVWS challenging and fundamentally different from Wi-Fi networks. While most prior works on TVWS network design focused on outdoor large -area scenario, the important indoor scenario is largely open for investigation. In this paper, we present WINET (for White -space Indoor NETwork), the first design framework for indoor multi -AP white space network. We optimize AP placement, spectrum allocation, and AP association. Spectrum fragmentation, spatial variation, and temporal variation are all tackled in our network design. We build a test-bed and conduct extensive measurements inside an office building across four months to obtain real -world traces. Experimental results show that WINET can increase AP coverage area by an average of 62.2% and obtain 67.9% higher system throughput while achieving fairness among users as compared to alternative approaches.

Abstract:Considering the problem of lower accuracy of the indoor localisation using Wi-Fi fingerprints technology,we propose a weighed three-point fix-based Wi-Fi fingerprints localisation system.Firstly,we use nearest neighbour matching method to make Wi-Fi fingerprints localisation and chose reference points.Secondly,we use multiple reference points to conduct weighted three-point fix in localisation. Experiments demonstrate that relative to the localisation system using Wi-Fi fingerprints alone,the proposed system can effectively improve the accuracy and stability of indoor localisation,and the real-time property is satisfied as well.
WFID: Passive Device-free Human Identification Using WiFi Signal

Abstract:We present WFID, a passive device-free indoor human identification system with one pair of WiFi signal transmitter and receiver. WFID design is motivated by the observation that PHY layer Channel State Information (CSI) is capable of capturing the frequency diversity of wideband channel, such that the human body curve may be uniquely identified by learning the feature pattern of CSI. Different from many CSI-based techniques focusing on phase shift, we propose a novel feature of subcarrier-amplitude frequency (SAF). Based on this feature, WFID realizes human identification through a linear-kernel SVM. We have implemented a prototype of WFID with a commercial AP and a computer equipped with one Intel 5300 NIC. WFID is evaluated in two typical indoor scenarios. The results confirm that WFID achieves high classification accuracy which is permanent over several days under two typical indoor scenarios, with low computation cost. This reveals the potential for WFID to realize real-time indoor human identification.

Abstract:Numerous indoor localization techniques have been proposed recently to meet the intensive demand for location-based service. Fingerprint-based approach is one of most popular and inexpensive solution. In terms of constructing the fingerprint database, there have to be a synchronized measurement for both indoor space(eg by labor-intensive site-survey or sensor-based crowd sensing) and fingerprint space, by this means the fingerprints database is established. It is the indoor space measurement hinders the usability of fingerprint-based localization system. In this work, we propose a sensor-free crowds ensing indoor localization scheme, protocol. The main contribution of our protocol is that we don't need indoor space measurement. Floor plan and RSS samples temporal sequence is the only requirement. The core of our method is a graph matching based manifold alignment process, which automatically finds the best correspondence between floor plan and wireless fingerprint transition structure. With no more need of indoor space measurement, the system deployment complexity and cost are significantly reduced. We implement our protocol at AP-end and deploy it in a 2000m2 office environment. The evaluation has shown that our protocol can handle complex environment mapping and achieve high localization & tracking accuracy.

Abstract:An indoor localization approach uses Wi-Fi Access Points (APs) to estimate the Direction of Arrival (DoA) of the WiFi signals. This paper demonstrates FIND, a tool for Fine INDoor localization based on a software-defined radio, which receives Wi-Fi frames in the 80 MHz band with four antennas. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first-ever prototype that extracts from such frames data in both frequency and time domains to calculate the DoA of Wi-Fi signals in real-time. Apart from other prototypes, we retrieve from frames comprehensive information that could be used to DoA estimation: all preamble fields in the time domain, Channels State Information, and signal-to-noise ratio. Using our device, we collect a dataset for comparing different algorithms estimating the angle of arrival in the same scenario. Furthermore, we propose a novel calibration method, eliminating the constant phase shift between receiving paths caused by hardware imperfections. All calibration data, as well as a gathered dataset with various DoA in an anechoic chamber and in a classroom, are provided to facilitate further research in the area of indoor localization, intelligence surfaces, and multi-user transmissions in dense deployments.

Abstract:Indoor localization is of great importance in pervasive applications and RSS fingerprint is known as a quite effective indoor location method. Floor attenuation might not give enough margin discrepancy to classify two neighboring floors, such as windows nearby or ring structure. Fingerprint location using the nearest Euclidean distance to the reference point can be interfered by the neighboring floor. In this paper, a multifloor localization framework with floor identification is proposed. The discriminative floor model is trained to maximize between-class scatter and floor identification is triggered by stair walk and elevator events. In experiments, a real dataset is collected in the building of six floors to evaluate our method. The results show that our method can identify accurate location in multifloor environment.

Abstract:As people spend significant parts of daily lives indoors, it is useful and important to measure indoor densities and find the dense regions in many indoor scenarios like space management and security control. In this paper, we propose a data-driven approach that finds top-k indoor dense regions by using indoor positioning data. Such data is obtained by indoor positioning systems working at a relatively low frequency, and the reported locations in the data are discrete, from a preselected location set that does not continuously cover the entire indoor space. When a search is triggered, the object positioning information is already out-of-date and thus object locations are uncertain. To this end, we first integrate object location uncertainty into the definitions for counting objects in an indoor region and computing its density. Subsequently, we conduct a thorough analysis of the location uncertainty in the context of complex indoor topology, deriving upper and lower bounds of indoor region densities and introducing distance decaying effect into computing concrete indoor densities. Enabled by the uncertainty analysis outcomes, we design efficient search algorithms for solving the problem. Finally, we conduct extensive experimental studies on our proposals using synthetic and real data. The experimental results verify that the proposed search approach is efficient, scalable, and effective. The top-k indoor dense regions returned by our search are considerably consistent with ground truth, despite that the search uses neither historical data nor extra knowledge about objects.

Abstract:Self-calibrating wireless indoor localization systems construct the radio map even the indoor floor plan automatically, which avoids the labor-intensive site survey process; however, existing systems utilizing the feature of Wi-Fi signals can only provide coarse-grained indoor maps, which hinders improvement of localization accuracy. In this paper, we present FineLoc, a fine-grained self-calibrating localization system based on the freely-deployed Bluetooth low energy (BLE) nodes and crowdsourced data, which can profile more detailed layout information of the indoor space. We first reveal that existing systems can only generate inaccurate floor plans owning to the coarse-grained Wi-Fi reference information. Then, we utilize the increasingly popular BLE beacon nodes as the source of reference information, with which a series of dead-reckoning optimization and new schemes particularly for finer-grained indoor map construction are presented. We implement a prototype FineLoc system, which is deployed in around 11,000 m(2) areas. Our experimental results with the prototype show that FineLoc can achieve 80 percent localization errors within 1.6 m, 1.4 m, and 1.1 min the library, classroom building, and office building, respectively, with an average density of deployed BLE nodes less than 2.6/100 m(2).

Abstract:Although fingerprint based localization is promising for indoor applications, its accuracy still remains a huge challenge. Most of existing approaches rely on the Radio Signal Strength (RSS) to generate fingerprints. However, merely using RSS is unable to accurately localize objects since such an one-dimensional fingerprint will be seriously influenced by the interference and multi-path effect in the indoor environment. In this paper, we propose a new localization approach based on multidimensional Wi-Fi fingerprint. Instead of only using RSS to construct fingerprint, we employ RSS, transmitted power, and channel information to construct an integrated fingerprint. The extended fingerprint enables fine-grained localization and tracking services. We also deign a cosine similarity based matching algorithm and enhanced particle filter mechanism to achieve accurate localization and tracking. Extensive experiment and implementation results show that the new fingerprint and proposed algorithms can achieve an accuracy within two meters in 90% of testing points, while demonstrating a good adaptability to complex indoor environments.

Abstract:People spend a significant amount of time in indoor spaces (e.g., office buildings, subway systems, etc.) in their daily lives. Therefore, it is important to develop efficient indoor spatial query algorithms for supporting various location-based applications. However, indoor spaces differ from outdoor spaces because users have to follow the indoor floor plan for their movements. In addition, positioning in indoor environments is mainly based on sensing devices (e.g., RFID readers) rather than GPS devices. Consequently, we cannot apply existing spatial query evaluation techniques devised for outdoor environments for this new challenge. Because Bayesian filtering techniques can be employed to estimate the state of a system that changes over time using a sequence of noisy measurements made on the system, in this research, we propose the Bayesian filtering-based location inference methods as the basis for evaluating indoor spatial queries with noisy RFID raw data. Furthermore, two novel models, indoor walking graph model and anchor point indexing model, are created for tracking object locations in indoor environments. Based on the inference method and tracking models, we develop innovative indoor range and k nearest neighbor (kNN) query algorithms. We validate our solution through use of both synthetic data and real-world data. Our experimental results show that the proposed algorithms can evaluate indoor spatial queries effectively and efficiently. Abstract:Positioning system can be used for different purposes and for different services, so a lot of research is going on to find a more accurate position with low error techniques with good results. The Positioning techniques have been actively studied recently due to service as well as safety and security matters. Global Positioning System (GPS) is more widely used for outdoor but GPS is not suitable for indoor . There are many localization systems with different architectures, configurations, accuracies and reliabilities Wi-Fi Positioning system (WPS) solves this problem. Here we find out position with the help of Wi-Fi signal strength. We also discuss location fingerprinting in detail since it is used in most current system or solutions. A small program installed on to calculate the position. This will help in many applications for mobile users and network administrators. It will make use of existing Wi-Fi infrastructure, although Wi-Fi system was never designed to find out the location. The smart device regularly scans the signal strengths for surrounding Wi-Fi access points and send information to a central server. This paper try to survey the recent work related to indoor positioning system.
