Abstract:The product from free radical and coordination polymerization generally are homopolymer or random copolymer with broad molecular weight distribution.In the past two decades,the breakthroughs in controlled/living radical and coordination polymerization and shuttling polymerization make it possible to use almost all vinyl monomers,particularly those cheap monomers,to produce more complex chain structures like di-,tri-block copolymer and gradient copolymers.With rational design,these copolymers might be high performance and high added value synthetic materials.The mechanisms and the up-to-date progress of these polymerization methods were introduced,and their possible applications were discussed.

Abstract:In the synthesis of polyethylene using supported Ziegler-Natta catalyst, the nascent polyethylene adopts distinct structures influenced by factors such as active site distribution, temperature, and growth rate. While experiments can achieve atomic-level observations through scanning tunnel microscopy (STM), acquiring statistical data on chain conformation and aggregation structures throughout the growth period remains challenging. To address this, we developed an in situ polymerization molecular dynamics simulation model that concurrently characterizes the growth and mobility of nascent polyethylene chains on supported catalysts. We unveiled the competition between the diffusion of monomers and the growth of nascent polymer chains. The simulation results demonstrated that conformational variations of nascent chains affect the diffusion resistance of the polymer melt to monomers with chain conformations aligned along the Z-axis facilitating monomer diffusion. Furthermore, by introducing a sidewall to simulate the nanoparticles on supported catalysts, we derived the compromise in competition between the attractive energy arising from the sidewalls and the cohesive energy within the nascent chains, resulting in diverse spatial and chain length distributions of the nascent chains. This work provides a new approach to investigate the reaction dynamics and the underlying microscopic mechanisms of in situ ethylene polymerization with the potential of further extension to the study of in situ growth for other nascent polymers.
Binding to Semiflexible Polymers: a Novel Method to Control the Structures of Small Numbers of Building Blocks

Abstract:Through the molecular dynamics simulation method, we demonstrate that long semi-flexible polymer chains can serve as an effective soft elastic medium for manipulating the ordered structures of small numbers of building blocks, which can be easily controlled by the chain bending stiffness. For two spherical particles in a polymer-particle mixture, three types of local organization are identified: monomer level tight particle bridging, direct contact aggregation, and dispersion. For small numbers of spherical particles in a polymer-particle mixture, the ordered structures of particles, such as spherical and linear particle aggregations, depend mainly on chain bending stiffness. For non-spherical building blocks, the relative orientations of neighboring building blocks are also strongly affected by chain bending stiffness. These results can help us to understand the complexity of the self-assembly of small numbers of building blocks in polymer-particle mixtures and the gene activity in living cells, as well as to construct novel materials in the nanotechnology field.

Abstract:Hyperbranched polymers with both highly branched structures and numerous vinyl functional groups have been synthesized via reversible activation/deactivation controlled polymerization of multifunctional vinyl monomers. By controlling the competition between propagation and reversible termination using a deactivation enhanced method, the growth rate of polymer chains is decreased and the onset of gelation is prevented until the system has achieved much higher levels of conversion than has previously been reported for nonenhanced systems. Here, we demonstrate this strategy by synthesizing highly branched, irregular dendritic polymers with a multiplicity of reactive functionalities such as vinyl and halogen functional groups, and controlled chain structure via deactivation enhanced atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of a commercially available multifunctional vinyl monomer-divinylbenzene (DVB) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA).

Abstract:Over the past decade, major progress in supramolecular polymerization has had a substantial effect on the design of functional soft materials. However, despite recent advances, most studies are still based on a preconceived notion that supramolecular polymerization follows a step-growth mechanism, which precludes control over chain length, sequence, and stereochemical structure. Here we report the realization of chain-growth polymerization by designing metastable monomers with a shape-promoted intramolecular hydrogen-bonding network. The monomers are conformationally restricted from spontaneous polymerization at ambient temperatures but begin to polymerize with characteristics typical of a living mechanism upon mixing with tailored initiators. The chain growth occurs stereoselectively and therefore enables optical resolution of a racemic monomer.

Abstract:Controlled/living radical polymerization (CRP) is a widely used technique that allows the synthesis of defined polymer architectures through precise control of molecular weights and distributions. However, the architectures of polymers prepared by the CRP techniques are limited to linear, cross-linked, and branched/dendritic structures. Here, we report the preparation of a new 3D single cyclized polymer chain structure from an in situ deactivation enhanced atom transfer radical polymerization of multivinyl monomers (MVMs), which are conventionally used for the production of branched/cross-linked polymeric materials as defined by P. Flory and W. Stockmayer nearly 70 years ago. We provide new evidence to demonstrate that it is possible to kinetically control both the macromolecular architecture and the critical gelling point in the polymerization of MVMs, suggesting the classical Flory-Stockmayer mean field theory should be supplemented with a new kinetic theory based on the space and instantaneous growth boundary concept.

Abstract:Supramolecular polymers have attracted plenty of interest in the scientific community; however, developing controllable methods of supramolecular polymerization remains a serious challenge. This article reviews some recent developments of methods for supramolecular polymerization from controllable fabrication to living polymerization. Three facile methods with general applicability for controllable fabrication of supramolecular polymers have been established recently: the first method is a self-sorting approach by manipulating ring-chain equilibrium based on noncovalent control over rigidity of monomers; the second is covalent polymerization from supramonomers formed by noncovalent interactions; and the third is supramolecular interfacial polymerization. More excitingly, living supramolecular polymerization has been achieved by two elegant strategies, including seeded supramolecular polymerization under pathway complexity control and chaingrowth supramolecular polymerization by metastable monomers. It is anticipated that this review may provide some guidance for precise fabrication of supramolecular polymers, leading to the construction of supramolecular polymeric materials with controllable architectures and functions.

Abstract:Supramolecular polymerization and supramolecular polymeric materials have attracted a great deal of attention over the past three decades. Traditional methods for fabricating supramolecular polymers and materials mainly focus on the self-assembly of building units, including the noncovalent polymerization of covalent monomers and the noncovalent cross-linking of linear polymers. Lately, we come up with a novel concept of supramonomer, which refers to a monomer that is fabricated by noncovalent interactions and is able to undergo covalent polymerization or noncovalent polymerization. Since then, plenty of supramolecular polymers and supramolecular polymeric materials have been successfully constructed through the polymerization of supramonomers. In this trend article, we will introduce the recent progress of supramolecular polymerization and supramolecular polymeric materials based on supramonomers. Firstly, we will focus on controllable supramolecular polymerization, including controllable covalent polymerization and promoted noncovalent polymerization. Secondly, we will summarize renewable supramolecular polymeric materials on the basis of supramonomers, including degradable materials, self-healing materials, and recyclable materials. It is highly anticipated that this trend article will enrich the methodology of supramolecular polymerization and open new avenues for fabricating supramolecular polymeric materials with tailor-made properties.

Abstract:Supramolecular polymers with multiple functionalities and hierarchical structures have received considerable attention and become a hot research topic over the past years. Herein, a main-chain supramolecular polymer has been successfully fabricated by using metal-ligand interactions and a thiol-ene click reaction. 1 H NMR, UV/Vis, DOSY, and viscosity measurements were carried out to investigate the molecular recognition and the process of supramolecular polymerization. From the study, the orthogonality between thiol-ene click reactions and the terpyridine-metal ions complexation behavior was testified, and supramolecular polymeric assemblies could be constructed by a one pot method. In the meantime, due to the incorporation of metal-ligand interactions, the supramolecular polymer shows stimuli-responsive properties toward chemical stimuli. Hence, this work could provide a methodology for developing supramolecular polymers as smart materials.

Abstract:The precise sequence control of polymer chain is an important research topic of polymer chemistry. Although some methods such as iterative synthesis and supramolecular polymerization have been developed to fabricate sequence-controllable polymer, it is still a great challenge to consecutively prepare multiple supramolecular polymers with different sequence structures. In this work, through the reasonable utilization of assembly motifs, we integrated multiple host-guest recognitions and metal coordination interactions to prepare different sequence-controlled supramolecular polymers by a multistep assembly strategy. This research provides inspiration for the design and preparation of supramolecular polymers with different sequence structures.

Abstract:As size-amplified analogues of canonical macromolecules, polymeric chains built up by "giant" monomers represent an experimental realization of the "beads-on-a-string" model at larger length scales, which could provide insights into fundamental principles of polymer science. In this work, we modularly constructed discrete giant polymeric chains using nanosized building blocks (polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane, POSS) as basic repeat units through an efficient and robust iterative exponential growth approach, with precise control on molecular parameters, including size, composition, regioconfiguration, and surface functionalities. Their chemical structures were fully characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, size-exclusion chromatography, and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. With elaborately designed amphiphilic block POSS chains and their analogues made of conventional monomers, the size effects were delicately studied and highlighted. Interesting assembly behaviors emerge as a result of distinct interactions and molecular dynamics. This category of molecules shares general self-assembly characteristics as the conventional counterparts in terms of phase transition and evolution. Meanwhile, it turns out that the monomer size has profound impacts on phase stability, as a trade-off between entropic and enthalpic contributions. It may open up a door for modular and programmable design of interesting materials with complex structures and diverse functions.

Abstract:Polymeric chains made of "giant" monomers at a larger length scale provide intriguing insights into the fundamental principles of polymer science. In this study, we modularly prepared a library of discrete amphiphilic polymeric chains using molecular nanoparticles as repeat units, with exact control of composition, chain length, surface property, and regio-configuration. These giant polymeric chains self-assembled into a rich collection of highly ordered phases. The precise chemical structure and uniform chain length eliminate all the inherent molecular "defects", while the nanosized monomer amplifies minute structural differences, providing an ideal platform for a systematic scrutiny of the self-assembly behaviors at a larger length scale. The compositional and regio-configurational contribution was carefully studied. The regio-regularity is found to have a direct and profound impact on the chain conformation, leading to a distinct molecular packing scheme and therefore shifting the phase boundaries. Abstract:The vastly expanding chemical and architectural parameter space of multiblock copolymers brings both opportunities and challenges for tailoring the structure and properties of a synthetic polymer. In this study, we reported a precise and concise multiblock model system to amplify the subtle structural variations and resolve the underlying phase principles. A series of giant polymeric chains based on polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane nanoparticles with an exact block number, regio-configuration, and sequence were designed and prepared. A close scrutiny of these sequence-/regio-isomers revealed that the interplay of geometric constraints, regio-configurations, and collective interactions dictates the self-assembled structures. Zigzag-packed lamellae with the layer normal perpendicular to the backbone were observed for the alternating chains, while a head-to-head arrangement with the lamellar normal along the chain direction was recognized in the case of block chains. Due to the geometric constraint, the alternating chains were exceedingly sensitive to the regio-regularity, leading to dramatically different phase stabilities. This work reveals the critical contribution of the block sequence and regio-configuration to phase behaviors, providing deeper insights toward rational structural engineering of multiblock copolymers.

Highly Controllable Ring–Chain Equilibrium in Quadruply Hydrogen Bonded Supramolecular Polymers

Abstract:Electron-rich dioxynaphthalene (DNP) group bridged bifunctional ureidopyrimidinone (UPy) derivatives (L1, L2, and L3) were synthesized, which could form small cyclic monomers, oligomers, or linear supramolecular polymers at certain concentration in solution, to achieve a highly controllable ring-chain equilibrium self-assembling supramolecular system. The ring-chain equilibrium of these supramolecular monomers constructed by different lengths of oligo(ethylene oxide) (oligoEO) chain as spacers were investigated by a combination of techniques, such as H-1 NMR, DOSY, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and viscometry. The experiment results demonstrated that there exists intramolecular pi-pi stacking interaction between DNP group and intramolecularly dimerized UPy motif in the monomeric cyclic form of these supramolecular monomers, and the strength of this pi-pi stacking interaction directly depends on the length of the oligoEO chain. Furthermore, strong intramolecular pi-pi stacking interaction was found to promote self-assembly favorable for intramolecularly cyclic monomerization, leading to a great increase of critical polymerization concentration (CPC). Monomer L1a with the shortest length of oligoEO chain is present as an exclusive type of intramolecularly hydrogen-bonded assembly, namely the cyclic monomers, over a broad concentration range (1.6-500 mM) in solution. Single crystal structure of the cyclic monomer Lib, which is an analogue of L1a, was thoroughly studied. The CPC values of monomer L2 and L3 with longer oligoEO chain are ca. 70 and 23 mM, respectively. However, L2 and L3 could perform selective cyclization over the entire concentration range in solution after threading into the tetracationic cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene)cyclophane (CBPQT(4+)) driven by host-guest interaction, which provides another supramolecular strategy to control ring-chain equilibrium. The combined results may provide new insights into the ring-chain equilibrium and offer valuable information on the understanding of the correlation between supramolecular assistance and polymerizability.
