Abstract:Two neutral mononuclear iron(II) complexes with different spin-crossover (SCO) properties, Fe(L1)2(SCN)2 (1) and Fe(L2)2(SCN)2 (2) (L1 = 2-(thiophen-3-yl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline and L2 = 2-(thiophen-2-yl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline), were solvothermally synthesized. With the different substituted position in 1,10-phenanthroline derivatives, 1 exhibits gradual SCO around room temperature with T1/2 = 280 K, while 2 displays abrupt SCO with 10 K hysteresis at T1/2↓ = 210 K and T1/2↑ = 220 K.

Abstract:The engineering of switchable molecules with magnetic multistability is lying on the cutting-edge research topics for integrating multi-switches and ternary memory devices. Here we presented a cyanide-bridged {FeIII2FeII} desolvated complex {[(pzTp)FeIII-(CN)3]2[FeII(L)]} (1), obtained through single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transformation from its solvated phase {[(pzTp)-FeIII(CN)3]2[FeII(L)]}·2CH3OH·5H2O (1·sol). Remarkably, 1 exhibited unprecedented three-step transition in magnetization with wide thermal hysteresis (44, 40, and 36 K) in the temperature range of 80–320 K. The detailed studies demonstrated that the tristable character originates from both an order-disorder structural phase transition (SPT) and a strongly cooperative two-step spin crossover (SCO) process. This work thus provides a new promising strategy for realizing multiple bistablity in magnetization by introducing two different transitions.

Abstract:The magnetic bistability of spin-crossover (SCO) materials is highly appealing for applications as molecular switches and information storage. However, switching of the spin state around room temperature remains challenging. In this work, we reported the successful manipulation of the spin states of two iron(II) complexes (1-Fe and 2-Fe) based on pyridylacylhydrazone ligands in manifold ways. Both complexes are stabilized in the low-spin (LS) state at room temperature because of the strong ligand-field strength imposed by the ligands. 2-Fe shows thermoinduced SCO above room temperature with a very large and reproducible hysteresis (>50 K), while 1-Fe remains in the LS state up to 400 K. Acidity-driven spin-state switching of the two complexes was achieved at room temperature as a result of the complex dissociation and release of iron(II) in its high-spin (HS) state. Recovery of the complex is feasible upon further alkalization treatment in the case of 1-Fe, allowing bidirectional modulation of the spin state of the metal center. Light-driven one-way switching from LS to HS is also achieved by virtue of E-to-Z isomerization at the C═N double bond, which results in dissociation of the complex because of the poor binding affinity in the Z configuration.

Abstract:Two-step thermo-induced spin-state switching has been observed in a cyanide-bridged [Fe2Fe2] molecular square complex, {[Fe(pzTp)(CN)3]2[Fe(L)2]2}[Fe(pzTp)(CN)3]2·4CH3OH·2H2O [1·4MeOH·2H2O; pzTp = tetrakis(pyrazol-1-yl)borate and L = bis(1-ethylimidazol-2-yl)ketone (bik*)] which has been characterized fully by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, (photo)magnetic measurements, and spectroscopic techniques. 1·4MeOH·2H2O exhibits two-step thermo-induced spin transition with T1/2 (1) ↑ = 306 K and T1/2 (2) ↑ = 370 K converting the low-temperature ground state, {[(FeIIILS)2(FeIILS)2](FeIIILS)2} into the high-temperature state, {[(FeIIILS)2(FeIIHS)2](FeIIILS)2} via a stable intermediate phase. The desolvated phase, 1 also exhibits gradual but reversible thermo-induced spin state change with T1/2 value of 190 K, significantly shifted to a lower temperature. It also exhibits photo-induced spin-state switching at 20 K with the TLIESST value of 60 K.

Abstract:The switching between spin-crossover (SCO) and single-ion magnet (SIM) are fascinating because the process provides potential in-depth understating of different bistability. Herein, we present a rare example of the desolvation-induced magnetic switching from single-ion magnetism to SCO between a halogen-functionalized cobalt(II) complex, [Co(Brphtpy)2](PF6)2 & sdot;2MeOH (Brphtpy = 4 '-(4-Bromophenyl)-2,2 ':6 ',2 ''-terpyridine, 1 & sdot;2MeOH) and its desolvated material of [Co(Brphtpy)2](PF6)2 (1). The temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility and variable-temperature single crystal X-ray diffraction results show a high spin state of the Co(II) ions in 1 & sdot;2MeOH. At lower temperature, frequency- and temperature-dependent slow magnetic relaxation behaviors were evidenced under an applied dc field of 1000Oe, originating from the easy-plane magnetic anisotropy (D=43.5 cm-1) of Co(II) ions. After the release of methanol molecules, interestingly, the desovated material 1 display a complete and cooperative two-step spin transitions with transition temperatures being 350 and 125K. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements support the stepwise SCO behavior and reveal the related Delta H and Delta S.

Abstract:Switchable molecules with magnetic bistability that can function at standard conditions are highly desirable from the perspective of practical applications. Over the last decade, significant progress has been made in modulating thermally induced electron-transfer-coupled spin transition (ETCST) events between diamagnetic {Fe II LS (μ-CN)Co III LS } and paramagnetic {Fe LS (μ-CN)-Co II HS } electron configurations (named LS and HS, respectively, for short) within the Fe/Co mixed-valence cyanometallate complexes. Herein, we prepared a novel [Fe 2 Co 2 ] square complex [(pzTp)Fe(CN) 3 Co(bnbpen)] 2 [NO 3 ] 2 ·4CH 3 OH·2.5H 2 O (1·Solv) and its desolvated phase [(pzTp)Fe(CN) 3 Co(bnbpen)] 2 [NO 3 ] 2 ( 1 ), obtained via single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transformation. Complex 1·Solv remaining in the diamagnetic state below room temperature exhibits an irreversible ETCST behavior accompanied by desolvation upon heating. Notably, complex 1 displays an unprecedented rate-dependent ETCST behaviour involving with two diamagnetic LS states (a dynamically favoured LS1 state and a thermodynamically favoured LS2 state), between which a net one-way transition from LS1 to LS2 is accessible likely via a structural phase transition (SPT) above 255 K. Consequently, two well separated transition channels (HS ↔ LS1 at around 255 K and HS ↔ LS2 in the temperature range of 317–350 K) are achieved according to either fast (> 20 K/min) or slow rate (< 1 K/min), respectively. At a moderate rate of 3 K/min, complex 1 shows a wide hysteresis of 66 K centered at 328 K, the largest yet reported for discrete Fe/Co cyanometallate complexes. Complex 1 represents the first ETCST example coupled with dynamic SPT, providing a new strategy for manipulating bistability within this fascinating cyanometallate family.

Spin-flop Transition and Magnetic Phase Diagram in CsCo2Se2 Revealed by Torque and Resistivity Measurements

Abstract:The magnetic properties of CsCo2Se2, possessing a ThCr2Si2 -structure, are systematically studied by using specific heat, resistivity, and torque measurements. Our results reveal that CsCo2Se2 undergoes a paramagnetic state to antiferromagnetic order at T-N approximate to 80 K at zero magnetic field. The T-N is nearly independent of the external magnetic field for H parallel to c-axis, and can be suppressed for H parallel to ab-plane below 4 T, above which spin-flop phase transition sets in. At 2 K, the magnetoresistance has a small value of 2.3% for H parallel to c-axis while goes up to 60% for H parallel to ab-plane at 9 T. A hump-like behavior in resistivity was discovered, which was ascribed to a field-induced spin-flop phase transition. The magnetoresistance results suggest that a crossover of spin-flop phase transition occurs at low temperatures in the field range of 2-4 T for H parallel to ab-plane. Furthermore, the magnetic torque results reveal a novel ordered Co spin structure at low temperatures under 6 T for H parallel to ab-plane. Finally, we summarize the magnetic phase diagram of CsCo2Se2 based on resistivity and torque results.

Abstract:The on-off switching of spin-crossover (SCO) and single-molecule magnetism (SMM) remains highly attractive, especially if it involves dynamic crystal-to-crystal transformation. Herein we report the first molecule, a mononuclear cobalt(ii) complex, that exhibits on-off switching between SCO and SMM reversibly during crystal-to-crystal transformation. Subtle structural transformation triggered by a simple dehydration-rehydration process induces significant geometrical changes of the Co-II center and modification of the supramolecular interactions and switches its colour and magnetic properties (dark red/SCO-on/SMM-off <-> orange/SCO-off/SMM-on). This work suggests that modification of the weak supramolecular interactions could be very effective in achieving switchable materials involving both SCO and SMM properties.

Abstract:Here, we explore the transport properties and simulate the spin-crossover (SCO) temperatures of two Fe(II) complexes by performing extensive density functional theory calculations combined with non-equilibrium Green's function technique. We find that two Fe(II) SCO complexes with the HS state display nearly perfect spin-filtering effect and the spin-down electrons govern the transport properties. Two examined Fe(II) SCO complexes display molecular switching behavior between the LS and HS states. The spin transition temperature is predicted to be 149 and 195 K for Fe(II) SCO complex with NCSe and NCBH3 coligands, respectively, which are close to the experimental values.

Abstract:Two mononuclear spin-crossover compounds Fe(L-1)(2) (1) and Fe(L-2)(2) (2) {HL1 = 2-hydroxy-3-methyl-N'-[1-(pyridine-2-yl)-butylidene]benzohydrazide, HL2 = 2-hydroxy-N'-[1-(pyridine-2-yl)butylidene]benzohydrazide} were successfully synthesized. The magnetic measurements of the compounds revealed different thermal magnetic behavior. Compound 1 undergoes a gradual complete thermal spin crossover (SCO) with T-1/2 up arrow/down arrow = 243/240 K and a hysteresis loop of 3 K. Compound 2 shows a gradual incomplete SCO during the measurable temperature region with T-1/2 approximate to 330 K. Through the comparison of the magnetic and structural results for 1 and 2 with previously reported related compounds, the alkyl substitutions of the ligand were considered to affect the ligand-field strength and hydrogen-bonding interactions. In addition, photomagnetism results showed an 87 % photoconversion and 36 K of T(LIESST) (LIESST = light-induced excited spin-state trapping) for compound 1. The results enrich the knowledge on how to control the spin-crossover behavior in the new system.

Abstract:AbstractA MnIII spin crossover complex with atypical two‐step hysteretic thermal switching at 74 K and 84 K shows rich structural–magnetic interplay and magnetic‐field‐induced spin state switching below 14 T with an onset below 5 T. The spin states, structures, and the nature of the phase transitions are elucidated via X‐ray and magnetization measurements. An unusual intermediate phase containing four individual sites, where are in a pure low spin state, is observed. The splitting of equivalent sites in the high temperature phase into four inequivalent sites is due to a structural reorganization involving a primary and a secondary symmetry‐breaking order parameter that induces a crystal system change from orthorhombic→monoclinic and a cell doubling. Further cooling leads to a reconstructive phase transition and a monoclinic low‐temperature phase with two inequivalent low‐spin sites. The coupling between the order parameters is identified in the framework of Landau theory.
A Halogen Hydrogen-Bonded Fe(III) Complex Showing Hysteretic Spin-Crossover Behavior above Room Temperature

Abstract:A mononuclear Fe(III) complex, (Fe-III(bzimpy-1H)(2)]Cl (1) was prepared by the reaction of a tridentate ligand 2,6-bis(benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine (bzimpy), where bzimpy-1H is the product of bzimpy after removing one proton, and its structure and magnetic properties were characterized in detail. The single crystal structure analysis shows that the Fe3+ center features a rare distorted octahedral N-6 coordination environment for the complex, and the 3D supramolecular structure is constructed by N-H center dot center dot center dot Cl hydrogen bonding between the adjacent cation complex units and counterbalance chloride ions. The complex showed hysteretic spin-crossover (SCO) behavior above room temperature as evidenced by combined magnetic investigations and differential scanning calorimetry measurements (T-1/2 up arrow =345 K, T-1/2 down arrow =330 K). In addition, the light-induced excited spin state trapping (LIESST) effect was also observed in the complex. The magnetism-structure relationship shows that the N-H center dot center dot center dot Cl hydrogen bonding plays an important role in the bistable SCO behavior of the complex.

Abstract:Although a great number of single-ion magnets (SIMs) and spin-crossover (SCO) compounds have been discovered, multifunctional materials with the combination of SCO and SIM properties are extremely scarce. Here magnetic studies have been carried out for a mononuclear, five-coordinate cobalt(ii) complex [Co(3,4-lut)4Br]Br (1) with square pyramidal geometry. Direct-current magnetic measurement confirms the spin transition between the S = 1/2 and 3/2 states in the range of 150-290 K with a small hysteresis loop. Frequency- and temperature-dependent alternating-current magnetic susceptibility reveals slow magnetization relaxation under an applied dc field of 3000 Oe. The work here presents the first instance of the five-coordinate mononuclear cobalt(ii)-based SIM exhibiting the thermally induced complete SCO.

Abstract:Coexistence and switching between spin-crossover (SCO) and single molecular magnet (SMM) behaviours in one single complex may lead to materials that exhibits bistable and stimuli sensitive property in a wide temperature range and multiple conditions, unfortunately, the conflict and dilemma in the principle of approaching SCO and SMM molecules make it in particular difficult: at low temperature, low spin (LS) SCO molecules possess highly symmetrical geometry and isotropic spins, which are not suitable for SMM behaviour. Herein, we overcome this issue by using a rational designed Co(II) mononuclear complex [Co(MeOphterpy) 2 ] (ClO 4 ) 2 ( 1 ; MeOphterpy = 4'-(4-Methoxyphenyl)-2,2':6',2''-terpyridine), the magnetic properties of which reversibly response to the desolvation and solvation. The solvated structure reinforced a low distortion of coordination sphere via hydrogen bonding between ligands and methanol molecules, while in the desolvated structure a methoxy group flipping occurred, increasing the distortion of the coordination sphere and stabilising HS state at low temperature, which exhibited a field-induced slow magnetic relaxation, resulting in a reversible switching between SCO and SMM properties within one molecule.

Abstract:Cooperative spin crossover transitions with thermal hysteresis loops are rarely observed in cobalt(II) complexes. Herein, two new mononuclear cobalt(II) complexes with hysteretic spin crossover at relatively high temperatures (from 320 to 400 K), namely, [Co(terpy-CH2OH)(2)]& BULL;X-2 (terpy-CH2OH = 4 & PRIME;-(hydroxymethyl)-2,2 & PRIME;;6 & PRIME;,2 & DPRIME;-terpyridine, X = SCN-(1) and SeCN- (2)), have been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. Both compounds are mononuclear Co-II complexes with two chelating terpy-CH2OH ligands. Magnetic measurements revealed the existence of the hysteretic SCO transitions for both complexes. For compound 1, a one-step transition with T-1/2 & UARR;= 334.5 K was observed upon heating, while a two-step transition is observed upon cooling with T-1/2 & DARR;(1) = 329.3 K and T-1/2 & DARR;(2) = 324.1 K (at a temperature sweep rate of 5 K/min). As for compound 2, a hysteresis loop with a width of 5 K (T-1/2 & DARR; = 391.6 K and T-1/2 & UARR; = 396.6 K, at a sweep rate of 5 K/min) can be observed. Thanks to the absence of the crystallized lattice solvents, their single crystals are stable enough at high temperatures for the structure determination at both spin states, which reveals that the hysteretic SCO transitions in both complexes originate from the crystallographic phase transitions involving a thermally induced order-disorder transition of the dangling -CH2OH groups in the ligand. This work shows that the modification of the terpy ligand has an important effect on the magnetic properties of the resulting cobalt(II) complexes.

Abstract:Spin-crossover(SCO) metal complexes are expected to be widely used in data storage materials, display devices and sensors.Although a lot of spin-crossover photoswitches have been developed, the reversible photomodulation cases that work at room temperature are limited. Herein, a novel cobalt complex o-1-Co(II) wherein the salen unit bridges with bis-diarylethene has been designed as switch to construct "off-on" logic operation at room temperature. The complex o-1-Co(II) displays an abrupt,reversible and hysteretic spin crossover(T 1/2 ↓=166 K, T 1/2 ↑=177 K, and ΔT 1/2 =11 K) between the high-spin(HS) and low-spin(LS) states. Meanwhile, photocyclization of o-1-Co(II) with UV light produces a photoresponsive closed form c-1-Co(II),which always stays at low-spin without SCO at all. Moreover, the magnetic switching of the complex can also be achieved with redox reactions between Co(II) and Co(III).

Abstract:Manipulating the transition temperature (T-1/2) of spin-crossover (SCO) complexes capable of fulfilling practical criteria through different synthetic strategies is one of the main focuses in the field of molecular magnetism. The reaction of the tricyanometallate precursor [(Tp*)Fe-III(CN)(3)](-) and Fe(II) salt with the "facially" tridentate ligand tris(2-pyridyl)phosphine oxide (TPPO) and NCE- anions afforded three isostructural {(Fe2Fe2II)-Fe-III} square complexes {[(Tp*)Fe-III(CN)(3)](2)[Fe-II(TPPO)](2)[NCE](2)}center dot Sol (E = S, Sol = 2CH(3)OH center dot 6H(2)O, 1; E = Se, Sol = 2MeCN center dot 2CH(2)Cl(2)center dot 2H(2)O, 2; E = BH3, Sol = 4CH(3)OH center dot 2MeCN, 3). Detailed structural analysis, variable-temperature IR analysis, magnetic susceptibility measurements and DFT calculations revealed that all compounds exhibit complete and one-step SCO behaviour between the {Fe-2(III),Fe-LS(2)II,HS} and {Fe-2(III),Fe-LS(2)II,LS} electronic states. As the ligand field increases from NCS- to NCSe- to NCBH3-, T-1/2 shifts dramatically from 214 to 250 to 288 K for 1, 2 and 3, respectively, demonstrating another effective way to tune the SCO properties of the [Fe-III-CN-Fe-II] systems through the introduction of NCE- co-ligands.

Abstract:The study of the spin-crossover phenomenon is an important field of magnetochemistry, which has attracted much attention. A new ligand, 2-methyl-1,4,8,9-tetraaza-triphenylene (mtt) and its complex, [Fe(mtt)(2)(NCS)(2)]. 2.5H(2)O, exhibiting high temperature spin crossover were prepared. Elemental analysis, H-1 NMR, infrared spectrum, electrospray ionization mass spectrum and ultraviolet spectrum were used to study the structure of the ligand and the complex. The variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility study shows that the temperatures of spin transition are T-e up arrow= 347 K and T-e down arrow 343 K, respectively, and the hysteresis loop is 4 K, which is the highest spin crossover temperature in the kind of [Fe(L)(2)(NCS)(2)] system. By comparing the complex with other similar structural complexes, it is revealed that the modification of ligand will influence greatly the critical temperature and hysteresis loop of spin crossover.
Slow Magnetic Relaxation In A Mononuclear Eight-Coordinate Cobalt(Ii) Complex

Abstract:The quest for the single-molecular magnets (SMMs) based on mononuclear transition-metal complexes is focused on the low-coordinate species. No transition-metal complex with a coordination number of eight has been shown to exhibit SMM properties. Here the magnetic studies have been carried out for a mononuclear, eight-coordinate cobalt(II)-12-crown-4 (12C4) complex [Co-II(12C4)(2)](I-3)(2)(12C4) (1) with a large axial zero-field splitting. Magnetic measurements show field-induced, slow magnetic relaxation under an applied field of 500 Oe at low temperature. The magnetic relaxation time tau was fitted by the Arrhenius model to afford an energy barrier of U-eff = 17.0 cm(-1) and a preexponential factor of tau(0) = 1.5 X 10(-6) s. The work here presents the first example of the eight-coordinate, mononudear, 3d metal complex exhibiting the slow magnetic relaxation.
