Abstract:By the combination of a Ni(II) salt, a bisphosphine ligand, and a catalytic amount of carboxylic acid anhydride, atom-economic hydrocarboxylation of various alkynes with formic acid can be achieved with high selectivity and remarkable functional group compatibility, affording alpha,beta-unsaturated carboxylic acids regio- and stereoselectively. Both terminal and internal alkynes are amenable substrates. A mechanism proceeding through carbon monoxide recycling in a catalytic amount is demonstrated to be crucial for the success of this transformation.

Abstract:A simple, practical and governable palladium-catalyzed hydroformylation of terminal arylacetylenes has been disclosed. Abstract:The role of carbodiimide as dehydrant in the chemo-, regio-and stereoselective Pd (II/0)-catalyzed hydrocarboxylation of various alkynes with HCOOH releasing CO in situ is reported for the first time to obtain alpha,beta-unsaturated carboxylic acids. Both symmetrical and unsymmetrical monoalkynes show good reactivity. Importantly, 2,2'-(1,4-phenylene)diacrylic acid can also be synthesized in high yield through the dihydrocarboxylation of 1,4-diethynylbenzene. Besides, an excellent result in gram scale experiment and TON up to 900 can be obtained, displaying the efficiency of this protocol. Notably, regulating the types and concentrations of dehydrant can control the CO generation, avoiding directly operating toxic CO and circumventing sensitivity issue to the CO amount. On the basis of the attractive features of formic acid including easy preparation through CO2 hydrogenation and efficient liberation of CO, this protocol using formic acid as bridging reagent between CO2 and CO can be perceived as an indirect utilization of CO2, offering an alternative method for preparing acrylic acid analogues. Abstract:DFT calculations have been conducted to elucidate the mechanistic details of a novel Ni-catalyzed hydrocarboxylation reaction of alkynes, in which formic acid is atom-economically used through a catalytic CO recycling manner. On the basis of our theoretical investigations, the bisphosphine (dppbz, 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)benzene) ligated nickel monocarbonyl complex (dppbz)NiCO was located as the active catalytic species for this process, and such a carbonyl ligand is found to be critical for the final reductive elimination. Our studies also revealed the addition of H to alkynes proceeds via a proton transfer process directly from formic acid (i.e., outer-sphere pathway) rather than through a proposed hydrometalation process (i.e., direct hydride shift from Ni-H). The thermal decomposition of formic anhydrides was found to be vital to a successful reaction, and its barrier must be slightly higher than the energetic span of the Ni catalytic cycle. Fast release of CO can poison the Ni catalyst, so that the reaction would be shut down. Other intriguing experimental observations, such as ligand effect, regioselectivity, and extraordinary compatibility of C-X (X = halogen) bonds, are also discussed in this article.

Abstract:Hydrocarboxylation of terminal alkynes with formic acid (FA) was accomplished over a multifunctional ligand (L2) modified Pd-catalyst, advantageous with 100% atom-economy, free use of CO and H2O, mild reaction conditions, and high yields (56–89%) of α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acids with 100% regioselectivity to the branched ones. The multifunctional ligand of L2 as a zwitterion salt containing the phosphino-fragment (-PPh2), Lewis acidic phosphonium cation and sulfonate group (-SO3 −), was constructed on the skeleton of 1.1′-binaphthyl-2.2′-diphenyl phosphine (BINAP) upon selective quaternization by 1,3-propanesultone. It was found that L2 conferred to the Pd-catalyst the co-catalytic effect, wherein the phosphino-coordinated Pd-complex was responsible for activation of all the substrates (including CO, FA and alkyne), and the incorporated phosphonium cation was responsible for synergetic activation of FA. The 1H NMR spectroscopic analysis supported that FA was truly activated by the incorporated Lewis acidic phosphonium cation in L2 via “acid-base pair” interaction. The in situ FT-IR spectra demonstrated that, the presence of Ac2O and NaOAc additives in the catalytic amount could dramatically promote the in situ release of CO from FA, which was required to initiate the hydrocarboxylation.

Abstract:An unprecedented and highly reactive Pd/C catalytic system has been introduced for regiodivergent hydrocarboxylation of terminal alkynes to selectively afford various acrylic and cinnamic acids employing oxalic acid as CO source as well as a promoter for the formation of active Pd-H complex. Herein, the formation of cinnamic acid is proposed to follow a unique anti-Markovnikov hydroiodination mechanism and the formation of acrylic acid might follow the traditional hydrocarboxylation pathway. Additionally, internal alkynes undergo hydrocarboxylation and carbonylative esterification with aliphatic alcohols to afford different α,β-unsaturated acids and esters respectively. The designed strategies were successfully leveraged for the diverse class of α,β-unsaturated acids and esters with excellent selectivity and yields under mild reaction conditions. Furthermore, acid functionalization of complicated naturally derived alkynes, utilizing economical and bench-stable oxalic acid and commercially accessible reusable catalyst with gram-scale applicability are the additional benefits of the established protocol.

Abstract:A general and selective palladium-catalyzed alkoxycarbonylation of all kinds of alkenes with formic acid (HCOOH, FA) is described. Terminal, di-, tri-, and tetra-substituted including functionalized olefins are converted into linear esters with high yields and regioselectivity. Key-to-success is the use of specific palladium catalysts containing ligands with built-in base, e.g., L5. Comparison experiments demonstrate that the active catalyst system not only facilitates isomerization and carbonylation of alkenes but also promotes the selective decomposition of HCOOH to CO under mild conditions.

Abstract:Formic acid is efficiently used as a C1 source to directly carboxylate allylic alcohols in the presence of a low loading of palladium catalyst and acetic anhydride as additive to afford β,γ‐unsaturated carboxylic acids with excellent chemo‐, regio‐, and stereoselectivity. The reaction proceeds through a carbonylation process with in situ‐generated carbon monoxide under mild conditions, avoiding the use of high‐pressure gaseous CO. A bisphosphine ligand with a large bite angle (4,5‐bis{diphenylphosphino}‐9,9‐dimethylxanthene, Xantphos) was found to be uniquely effective for this transformation. The regio‐ and stereoconvergence of this reaction is ascribed to the thermodynamically favored isomerization of the allylic electrophile in the presence of the palladium catalyst.

Abstract:We herein present a carbonylative strategy to synthesize acid anhydrides from alkenes via in situ generated carboxylic acids. Formic acid (FA) reacts with alkene and CO under catalytic conditions to generate carboxylic acids. With our established palladium‐based catalytic reaction conditions and modulating the alkene:formic acid ratio to at least 2:1, symmetric acid anhydrides were effectively generated. The catalytic process was applied to various alkenes, simple as well as with various functional groups, to give moderate to excellent yields as observed with NMR and isolation of the corresponding (linear) amide produced on derivatization. Furthermore, one‐pot derivatization of the reaction mixtures provides direct access to various acyl‐based molecules including phenolic esters, primary amides, thioesters and ketones, which otherwise require special conditions for their synthesis via carbonylation.

Abstract:The reaction of internal alkynes (1) with amines (2) in the presence of catalytic amount of Pd(PPh 3 ) 4 and benzoic acid in dioxane at 100ºC gave the allylic amines (3) in good to excellent yields.The intramolecular reaction of alkynes with tethered amino groups (4) gave 2-vinylpyrrolidines and 2-vinylpiperidines (5) in good to excellent yields.The carbon-nitrogen bond is frequently encountered in fragments of various biologically active natural products.Hence, the development of efficient synthetic approaches leading to nitrogen based compounds is a subject of considerable attraction.The organometallic reactions involving the formal addition of a N-H bond across a carbon-carbon multiple bond appear to offer the most attractive route to such compounds, because this process does not generate byproducts generally observed in the metal-catalyzed substitution process.1 The palladium-catalyzed intermolecular hydroaminations of 1,3-dienes, 2 allenes, 3 enynes, 4 and methylenecyclopropanes 5 have been developed to realize the ideal carbon-nitrogen bond formation.On the other hand, we have previously reported that certain alkynes react with carbon pronucleophiles in the presence of palladium/acetic acid catalyst to give the corresponding allylation products. 6This hydrocarbonation is similar to the hydroacylation process reported by Trost et al. for the allylation of acetic acid with alkynes which gives allylic acetates. 7The utility of this methodology prompted us to extend the formal hydrocarbonation to the formal hydroamination to provide a new atom-economical procedure for the synthesis of amines from alkynes. 8In fact, the reaction of certain acetylene derivatives (1) with amines (2) in the presence of 5 mol% Pd(PPh 3 ) 4 and 10 mol% PhCO 2 H in dioxane at 100ºC gave the corresponding allylic amines (3) in very high to good yields (eq.1).We describe herein an account of our results, part of which has been reported previously.

Abstract:A branch-selective hydroalkylation of alkoxyallenes with monofluorinated nucleophiles was developed using palladium catalysis, allowing construction of valuable a-monofluoroalkylated allylic ethers. Notably, this represents the first catalytic hydrofluoroalkylation of alkoxyallenes. The practicability of this method is highlighted by its broad substrate scope and diversified product elaborations. Initial investigation of the asymmetric variant could afford chiral fluorine -containing allylic ethers with up to 68% ee.
