Abstract:A catalytic annulation cascade is achieved that affords an efficient access to phthalides from readily available benzoic acids and saturated ketones. The reaction is catalyzed by a bimetallic Ir/Cu system and proceeds via the combination of Cu-catalyzed dehydrogenation of ketones and Ir-catalyzed direct C-H functionalization under the assistance of the weakly coordinating carboxyl followed by the beta-H elimination and intramolecular Michael addition. This method shows a broad scope of substrates and good functional group tolerance. The protocol furnishes an alternative strategy for the construction of diverse 3-substituted phthalides.

Abstract:A Cp*Rh-III-catalyzed annulative carbooxygenation of challenging 1,1-disubstituted alkenes triggered by C-H activation of N-aryloxyacetamides has been established, which affords 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran derivatives with a quaternary carbon center in good to excellent yields under mild redox-neutral conditions. An amide group on the alkenes is essential for the process, and may inhibit the beta-H elimination from C(sp3)-Rh species by saturating the rhodium center through coordination. Furthermore, mechanistic insights obtained from control experiments suggest a mechanism involving a Rh-III-Rh-V-Rh-III catalytic cycle.

Abstract:The ruthenium-catalyzed activation of the C4 position of coumarins for coupling with acrylates was described using modifiable ketone as a directing group. The alkenylation reaction provided a direct approach to prepare previously inaccessible 4-alkenylated coumarins with operational simplicity and high atom-economy. This protocol also worked well with coumarin-3-carboxylic acids to unveil a rare instance of a tandem alkenylation/decarboxylation reaction. The potential value of this approach was further highlighted by the efficient synthesis of several heterocyclic fused coumarin derivatives.

Abstract:A rhodium-catalyzed coupling-cyclization reaction of alkenyldiazoacetates with o-alkenyl arylisocyanides has been developed. In this reaction, the highly reactive alkenylketenimine intermediates generated by coupling reaction of alkenyldiazoacetates with o-alkenyl arylisocyanides undergo intramolecular [4 + 2] cycloaddition and provide a novel, highly efficient method for the one-step synthesis of carbazoles by formation of three new bonds and two rings from readily available acyclic starting materials.

Abstract:An iridium-catalyzed alkenylation/annulation sequence between monocarba-closo-dodecaborate carboxylic acids and diarylacetylenes is reported. Regioselective activation of the B2 position, followed by B-C bond formation and ring closure, affords 3D bora-analogues of isocoumarins. The reaction tolerates a variety of functional groups on the aromatic rings and can be extended to B12-substituted derivatives. Furthermore, subsequent alkenylation of the B4 vertex has been achieved in high yields.

Abstract:An expedient and practical route for realizing a novel, substrate-controlled diastereoselective switch strategy has been successfully developed. The [4+1] annulation of thioamides with sulfur ylides proceeded smoothly via a Michael addition triggered sequential process, and trans-dihydrothieno[3,4-c]coumarins were obtained because of steric hindrance effects between the benzoyl group and the unit of 2H-chromen-2-one as shown in the Newman projection. Nucleophilic substitution was observed as the key step when the sulfur ylides were replaced with acetophenones in the [4+1] annulation, and a double pi,pi-stacking donor-acceptor interaction stabilized the transition state that led to the cis-dihydrothieno[3,4-c]coumarins. In addition, a facile chemoselective reaction was also investigated, providing a series of thieno[3,4-c]coumarins.

Abstract:A novel method for the regio- and stereoselective synthesis of substituted 3-coumaranones from salicylaldehydes and allenes using a rhodium(III) catalyst has been developed. This procedure gives access to new 2-vinyl-substituted 3-coumaranone compounds. The method involves a Rh(III)-catalyzed aldehyde C-H activation and annulation reactions. Moreover, this Rh(III)-catalyzed [4 + 1] annulation reaction has been applied to 2-aminobenzaldehydes to afford 2,2-disubstituted 3-indolinones.

Abstract:A facile silver-catalyzed oxidative decarboxylation of arylthiodifluoroacetic acids or aryloxydifluoroacetic acids with coumarins/quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones was developed. This transformation provided a series of C-3 aryloxydifluoromethylated or arylthiodifluoromethylated coumarins/quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones containing various functional groups in moderate to good yields, featuring good functional group tolerance, easily accessible starting materials and operational simplicity.

Abstract:A novel and green photocatalytic strategy for the synthesis of C-4-acylated coumarins with α-keto acids and 3-nitrocoumarin has been developed. This operationally simple protocol works under mild reaction conditions, providing convenient access to 4-acyl coumarin derivatives. The control experimental results showed that the nitro radical produced by the cleavage of the C-N bond acts as an electron acceptor to complete the photocatalytic cycle, achieving a redox-neutral reaction.

Abstract:Polycyclic aromatic compounds are widely used in materials science, so it is highly desirable to develop an efficient and practical approach to them. In this paper, a novel, efficient and practical method for the rhodium(III)-catalyzed desulfination of sodium arenesulfinates and oxidative annulation with alkynes has been developed, and the corresponding polycyclic aromatic compounds with multiple substituents were prepared in moderate to good yields. The reactions proceeded through sequential rhodium(III)-catalyzed desulfination, intermolecular addition of aryl-Rh(III) complexes to dialkyl but-2-ynedioates and diarylalkynes, and intramolecular oxidative annulation via C-H activation. The present method is the first example of the oxidative annulation of arene derivatives with two different alkynes. Therefore, it should afford a useful strategy for the synthesis of polycyclic aromatic compounds.

Abstract:A palladium-catalyzed base-accelerated ortho-selective C-H alkenylation of phenols to synthesize bioactive coumarin derivatives was developed. The reaction condition was mild and the substrate scope was broad with both electron-neutral and electron-deficient phenols, which is complementary to the previous methods to synthesize electron-rich coumarins. Several bioactive molecules were functionalized and several coumarins with bioactive properties were synthesized. Mechanistic studies showed that this reaction underwent C-H bond activation via direct metallation rather than the Friedel-Crafts pathway.

Abstract:A facile and efficient strategy for modular access to furo[3,2- c ]chromen-4-ones using 4-hydroxycoumarin and β-nitroalkenes via Lewis acid-catalyzed formal [3 + 2] annulation protocol is described. This reaction proceeds via cascade Michael addition/nucleophilic addition/elimination in the presence of Yb(OTf) 3 , which involves the formation of two new σ (C–C and C–O) bonds for the construction of a novel furan ring in a single operation. This protocol affords a variety of functional groups, thereby providing a practical and efficient method for the fabrication of a furo[3,2- c ]chromen-4-one framework.

Abstract:Cp*Rh(III)‐catalyzed regioselective C−H annulation and alkenylation of 2‐pyridones with terminal alkynes have been developed. The cationic Cp*Rh(III) catalytic system containing FeCl3 additive enables annulation of 1‐(2‐pyridyl)‐2‐pyridones with terminal alkynes, providing efficient access to 5,7‐diarylated 2‐quinolinones. The reaction pathway can be switched to alkenylation with [Cp*RhCl2]2 as the catalyst, NaOAc as the additive and HOAc as the solvent, affording C6‐alkenylated 1‐(2‐pyridyl)‐2‐pyridones in high yields. These protocols accommodate a wide range of substrates with good functional group compatibility.

Abstract:Here, we demonstrate the regio-selective C–H alkenylation reaction with acrylates by a rhodium-catalyzed reaction of PMS (phenylmethyl sulfoximine) directed 2-oxo-2 H -chromene-3-carboxylic acid derivatives. The current C(sp 2 )–C(sp 2 ) cross-coupling strategy could deliver a variety of C4-alkenylated coumarin carboxylic acid manifolds in an economical fashion. The key aspects of this method encompass its one-pot nature, straightforward workup process, higher yields, broad substrate compatibility, including various functional groups, and suitability for scale-up synthesis. The derivatives of the current protocol are also highly useful in attaining the various alkenylated coumarin-derived acid derivatives, which can also be useful for the synthesis of complex drug molecules.
