Abstract:Molecules are often born with high energy and large-amplitude vibrations. In solution, a newly formed molecule cools down by transferring energy to the surrounding solvent molecules. The progression of the molecular and solute-solvent cage structure during this fundamental process has been elusive, and spectroscopic data generally do not provide such structural information. Here, we use picosecond X-ray liquidography (solution scattering) to visualize time-dependent structural changes associated with the vibrational relaxation of I(2) molecules in two different solvents, CCl(4) and cyclohexane. The birth and vibrational relaxation of I(2) molecules and the associated rearrangement of solvent molecules are mapped out in the form of a temporally varying interatomic distance distribution. The I-I distance increases up to ~4 Å and returns to the equilibrium distance (2.67 Å) in the ground state, and the first solvation cage expands by ~1.5 Å along the I-I axis and then shrinks back accompanying the structural change of the I(2) molecule.
Solvent Dependent Structural Perturbations of Chemical Reaction Intermediates Visualized by Time-Resolved X-Ray Diffraction

Abstract:Ultrafast time-resolved wide angle x-ray scattering from chemical reactions in solution has recently emerged as a powerful technique for determining the structural dynamics of transient photochemical species. Here we examine the structural evolution of photoexcited CH2I2 in the nonpolar solvent cyclohexane and draw comparisons with a similar study in the polar solvent methanol. As with earlier spectroscopic studies, our data confirm a common initial reaction pathway in both solvents. After photoexcitation, CH2I2 dissociates to form CH2I⋅+I⋅. Iodine radicals remaining within the solvent cage recombine with a nascent CH2I⋅ radical to form the transient isomer CH2I−I, whereas those which escape the solvent cage ultimately combine to form I2 in cyclohexane. Moreover, the transient isomer has a lifetime approximately 30 times longer in the nonpolar solvent. Of greater chemical significance is the property of time-resolved wide angle x-ray diffraction to accurately determine the structure of the of CH2I−I reaction intermediate. Thus we observe that the transient iodine-iodine bond is 0.07 Å±0.04 Å shorter in cyclohexane than in methanol. A longer iodine-iodine bond length for the intermediate arises in methanol due to favorable H-bond interaction with the polar solvent. These findings establish that time-resolved x-ray diffraction has sufficient sensitivity to enable solvent dependent structural perturbations of transient chemical species to be accurately resolved.

Abstract:We studied structural dynamics in the photodissociation of iodoform (CHI3) dissolved in methanol by time-resolved x-ray diffraction. A femtosecond laser pulse induces the bond-breaking of an iodine atom from iodoform and an x-ray pulse generated from a synchrotron gives time-dependent diffraction signal which contains the structural information of photoproducts with 100 ps time-resolution and 0.001 angstrom spatial resolution. CHI2 radical and I atom are formed by the results of the ultrafast photodissociation of iodoform and these intermediates recombine to form iodoform again via geminate recombination. The iodine atoms which escape from the cages nongeminately recombine to form I-2. Solvent dynamics, heating and solvent expansion, caused by photodissociation, are also explained from time-resolved x-ray diffraction data.

Abstract:We report direct structural evidence of the bridged radical (CH 2 ICH 2 ·) in a polar solution, obtained using time-resolved liquid-phase x-ray diffraction. This transient intermediate has long been hypothesized to explain stereo-chemical control in many association and/or dissociation reactions involving haloalkanes. Ultrashort optical pulses were used to dissociate an iodine atom from the haloethane molecule (C 2 H 4 I 2 ) dissolved in methanol, and the diffraction of picosecond x-ray pulses from a synchrotron supports the following structural dynamics, with ∼0.01 angstrom spatial resolution and ∼100 picosecond time resolution: The loss of one iodine atom from C 2 H 4 I 2 leads to the C-I-C triangular geometry of CH 2 ICH 2 ·. This transient C 2 H 4 I then binds to an iodine atom to form a new species, the C 2 H 4 I-I isomer, which eventually decays into C 2 H 4 + I 2 . Solvent dynamics were also extracted from the data, revealing a change in the solvent cage geometry, heating, and thermal expansion.

Abstract:The cover picture illustrates the technique of time-resolved X-ray liquidography (solution scattering), a direct tool to probe structural dynamics and spatiotemporal kinetics of solution-phase reactions. Picosecond optical pulses (red line) trigger a chemical reaction in a solution and 100 ps long X-ray pulses (cyan line) from a synchrotron probe the evolving structures of transient species over picoseconds to microseconds. Molecules ranging from small molecules to organometallic complexes, nanoparticles and proteins are studied. Impulsive Solvent Heating Probed by Picosecond X-Ray Diffraction

Abstract:The time-resolved diffraction signal from a laser-excited solution has three principal components: the solute-only term, the solute-solvent cross term, and the solvent-only term. The last term is very sensitive to the thermodynamic state of the bulk solvent, which may change during a chemical reaction due to energy transfer from light-absorbing solute molecules to the surrounding solvent molecules and the following relaxation to equilibrium with the environment around the scattering volume. The volume expansion coefficient α for a liquid is typically ∼1×10−3K−1, which is about 1000 times greater than for a solid. Hence solvent scattering is a very sensitive on-line thermometer. The decomposition of the scattered x-ray signal has so far been aided by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, a method capable of simulating the solvent response as well as the solute term and solute/solvent cross terms for the data analysis. Here we present an experimental procedure, applicable to most hydrogen containing solvents, that directly measures the solvent response to a transient temperature rise. The overtone modes of OH stretching and CH3 asymmetric stretching in liquid methanol were excited by near-infrared femtosecond laser pulses at 1.5 and 1.7μm and the ensuing hydrodynamics, induced by the transfer of heat from a subset of excited CH3OH* to the bulk and the subsequent thermal expansion, were probed by 100ps x-ray pulses from a synchrotron. The time-resolved data allowed us to extract two key differentials: the change in the solvent diffraction from a temperature change at constant density, seen at a very short time delay ∼100ps, and a term from a change in density at constant temperature. The latter term becomes relevant at later times ∼1μs when the bulk of liquid expands to accommodate its new temperature at ambient pressure. These two terms are the principal building blocks in the hydrodynamic equation of state, and they are needed in a self-consistent reconstruction of the solvent response during a chemical reaction. We compare the experimental solvent terms with those from MD simulations. The use of experimentally determined solvent differentials greatly improved the quality of global fits when applied to the time-resolved data for C2H4I2 dissolved in methanol.

Abstract:We have studied the reaction dynamics for HgI(2) in methanol by using time-resolved x-ray diffraction (TRXD). Although numerous time-resolved spectroscopic studies have provided ample information about the early dynamics of HgI(2), a comprehensive reaction mechanism in the solution phase spanning from picoseconds up to microseconds has been lacking. Here we show that TRXD can provide this information directly and quantitatively. Picosecond optical pulses triggered the dissociation of HgI(2), and 100-ps-long x-ray pulses from a synchrotron probed the evolving structures over a wide temporal range. To theoretically explain the diffracted intensities, the structural signal from the solute, the local structure around the solute, and the hydrodynamics of bulk solvents were considered in the analysis. The results in this work demonstrate that the determination of transient states in solution is strongly correlated with solvent energetics, and TRXD can be used as an ultrafast calorimeter. It also is shown that a manifold of structural channels can be resolved at the same time if the measurements are accurate enough and that global analysis is applied. The rate coefficients for the reactions were obtained by fitting our model against the experimental data in one global fit including all q-values and time delays. The comparison between all putative reaction channels confirms that two-body dissociation is the dominant dissociation pathway. After this primary bond breakage, two parallel channels proceed. Transient HgI associates nongeminately with an iodine atom to form HgI(2), and I(2) is formed by nongeminate association of two iodine atoms.

Abstract:The structural dynamics of the photodissociation of iodoform in methanol (see picture: H blue, C green, I violet) are revealed by means of time-resolved X-ray diffraction in solution (also called transient X-ray liquidography because of its analogy to crystallography). Abstract:A time-resolved x-ray-diffraction experiment is presented that aims to study the recombination of laser-dissociated iodine molecules dissolved in CCl4. This process is monitored over an extended time interval from pico- to microseconds. The variations of atom-atom distances are probed with a milliangstrom resolution. A recent theory of time-resolved x-ray diffraction is used to analyze the experimental data; it employs the correlation function approach of statistical mechanics. The most striking outcome of this study is the experimental determination of time-dependent I-I atom-atom distribution functions. The structure of the CCl4 solvent changes simultaneously; the solvent thus appears as a reaction partner rather than an inert medium hosting it. Thermal expansion of the system is nonuniform in time, an effect due to the presence of the acoustic horizon. One concludes that a time-resolved x-ray diffraction permits real-time visualization of solvent and solute motions during a chemical reaction.

Abstract:Photolysis of iodoform (CHI3) in solution has been extensively studied, but its reaction mechanism remains elusive. In particular, iso-iodoform (iso-CHI2-I) is formed as a product of the photolysis reaction, but its detailed structure is not known, and whether it is a major intermediate species has been controversial. Here, by using time-resolved X-ray liquidography, we determined the reaction mechanism of CHI3 photodissociation in cyclohexane as well as the structure of iso-CHI2-I. Both iso-CHI2-I and CHI2 radical were found to be formed within 100 ps with a branching ratio of 40:60. Iodine radicals (I), formed during the course of CHI3 photolysis, recombine nongeminately with either CHI2 or I. Based on our structural analysis, the I-I distance and the C-I-I angle of iso-CHI2-I were determined to be 2.922 ± 0.004 Å and 133.9 ± 0.8°, respectively.

Abstract:Information about temporally varying molecular structure during chemical processes is crucial for understanding the mechanism and function of a chemical reaction. Using ultrashort optical pulses to trigger a reaction in solution and using time-resolved X-ray diffraction (scattering) to interrogate the structural changes in the molecules, time-resolved X-ray liquidography (TRXL) is a direct tool for probing structural dynamics for chemical reactions in solution. TRXL can provide direct structural information that is difficult to extract from ultrafast optical spectroscopy, such as the time dependence of bond lengths and angles of all molecular species including short-lived intermediates over a wide range of times, from picoseconds to milliseconds. TRXL elegantly complements ultrafast optical spectroscopy because the diffraction signals are sensitive to all chemical species simultaneously and the diffraction signal from each chemical species can be quantitatively calculated from its three-dimensional atomic coordinates and compared with experimental TRXL data. Since X-rays scatter from all the atoms in the solution sample, solutes as well as the solvent, the analysis of TRXL data can provide the temporal behavior of the solvent as well as the structural progression of all the solute molecules in all the reaction pathways, thus providing a global picture of the reactions and accurate branching ratios between multiple reaction pathways. The arrangement of the solvent around the solute molecule can also be extracted. This review summarizes recent developments in TRXL, including technical innovations in synchrotron beamlines and theoretical analysis of TRXL data, as well as several examples from simple molecules to an organometallic complex, nanoparticles, and proteins in solution. Future potential applications of TRXL in femtosecond studies and biologically relevant molecules are also briefly mentioned.

Abstract:Iodoform (CHI 3 ) has garnered significant attention for its unique ability to induce photo-cyclopropanation of olefins by releasing an iodine radical through C–I bond cleavage. However, the detailed mechanism underlying CHI 3 photodissociation is still not fully understood. Here, we elucidate the ultrafast structural dynamics of CHI 3 upon photoexcitation using femtosecond time-resolved X-ray liquidography (fs-TRXL) at an X-ray free-electron laser facility. The fs-TRXL data was decomposed into the isotropic and anisotropic data. The isotropic data reveal that the formation of CHI 2 and I radicals upon photolysis precedes the emergence of iso -CHI 2 –I. After a short induction period, two competing geminate recombination pathways of CHI 2 and I radicals take place: one pathway leads to the recovery of CHI 3 , while the other results in the formation of iso -CHI 2 –I. Additionally, the anisotropic data show how the transient anisotropic distribution of both the species formed upon photoexcitation and the ground-state species depleted upon photoexcitation decays through rotational dephasing. Furthermore, the observed structural dynamics of CHI 3 has distinctive differences with that of BiI 3 , which can be attributed to differences in their central moieties, CH and Bi. Our findings provide insights into the photoinduced reaction dynamics of CHI 3 , enhancing the understanding of its role in photochemical reactions.

Abstract:The realization of solution phase pump-probe diffraction experiments on bean-dine ID09B is described. The pink beam from a low-K in-vacuum undulator is used to study the structural dynamics of small molecules in solution to 100 picosecond time resolution and at atomic resolution. The X-ray chopper and the associated timing modes of the synchrotron are described. The dissociation of molecular iodine in liquid CCl4 is studied by single pulse diffraction. The data probe not only the iodine structures but also the solvent structure as the latter is thermally excited by the flow of energy from recombining iodine atoms. The low-q part of the diffraction spectra is a sensitive probe of the hydrodynamics of the solvent as a function of time.

Abstract:Abstract Charge-transfer-to-solvent states in aqueous halides are ideal systems for studying the electron-transfer dynamics to the solvent involving a complex interplay between electronic excitation and solvent polarization. Despite extensive experimental investigations, a full picture of the charge-transfer-to-solvent dynamics has remained elusive. Here, we visualise the intricate interplay between the dynamics of the electron and the solvent polarization occurring in this process. Through the combined use of ab initio molecular dynamics and machine learning methods, we investigate the structure, dynamics and free energy as the excited electron evolves through the charge-transfer-to-solvent process, which we characterize as a sequence of states denoted charge-transfer-to-solvent, contact-pair, solvent-separated, and hydrated electron states, depending on the distance between the iodine and the excited electron. Our assignment of the charge-transfer-to-solvent states is supported by the good agreement between calculated and measured vertical binding energies. Our results reveal the charge transfer process in terms of the underlying atomic processes and mechanisms.

Photodissociation Reaction of 1,2-Diiodoethane in Solution: A Theoretical and X-Ray Diffraction Study

Abstract:Various molecular species are known to form during the photoreaction of C2H4I2 in the gas phase and in solution. We have studied all species involved in this reaction by ab initio and density functional theory (DFT) calculations: Geometries, energies, and vibrational frequencies of C2H4I2, bridged C2H4I*, anti C2H4I*, C4H4, I2, I3-, and the isomer C2H4I-I were calculated. The absorption peaks and oscillator strengths of selected species along the potential energy surface (PES) were calculated using time-dependent DFT and were compared with available experimental results. The calculated PES satisfactorily describes the observed reactions of the photoexcited C2H4I2 molecule. In the gas phase, there is only one reaction pathway: the first C-I bond ruptures followed by a secondary C-I breakage in the haloethyl radical C2H4I*. In solution, by contrast, another reaction channel, which is energetically more favored over the secondary dissociation, is switched on due to a solvation effect: the bridged C2H4I* can bind to the free iodine atom to form a C2H4I-I isomer without any energy barrier. The isomer can then break into C2H4 and I2. The rotational barriers in the gas phase and in solution were also calculated and compared. To provide experimental data on the structure of C2H4I2 in solution, the ground state structure of C2H4I2 in methanol was determined from static X-ray diffraction data using 88 keV (lambda = 0.14 A) X-rays. The structural parameters are compared with those from the theoretical results.

Abstract:Ultrafast dynamic solvent properties are recognized to play an important role in controlling the rate of charge transfer reactions. 1 Dynamic solvation has been studied by time dependent fluorescence Stokes shift measurements of dipolar chromophores. However, only one measurement with sufficient time resolution to reveal a large contribution arising from underdamped solvent motion has been reported.2 The solvent motions giving rise to the solvent response should also contribute to the collective nuclear response in transient birefringence measurements of the neat liquid.3 To explore the connection between the two experiments and further characterize ultrafast dynamic solvation we have performed both time resolved fluorescence and transient birefringence experiments in acetonitrile, methanol, and dimethyl sulfoxide.

Abstract:The photochemical reaction pathways of CHBr3 in solution were unveiled using two complementary X-ray techniques, time-resolved X-ray solution scattering (TRXSS) and X-ray transient absorption spectroscopy, in a wide temporal range from 100 ps to tens of microseconds. By performing comparative measurements in protic (methanol) and aprotic (methylcyclohexane) solvents, we found that the reaction pathways depend significantly on the solvent properties. In methanol, the major photoproducts are CH3OCHBr2 and HBr generated by rapid solvolysis of iso-CHBr2-Br, an isomer of CHBr3. In contrast, in methylcyclohexane, iso-CHBr2-Br returns to CHBr3 without solvolysis. In both solvents, the formation of CHBr2 and Br is a competing reaction channel. From the structural analysis of TRXSS data, we determined the structures of key intermediate species, CH3OCHBr2 and iso-CHBr2-Br in methanol and methylcyclohexane, respectively, which are consistent with the structures from density functional theory calculations.
Probing C-I Bond Fission in the UV Photochemistry of 2-Iodothiophene with Core-to-Valence Transient Absorption Spectroscopy

Abstract:The UV photochemistry of small heteroaromatic molecules serves as a testbed for understanding fundamental photoinduced transformations in moderately complex compounds, including isomerization, ring-opening, and molecular dissociation. Here, a combined experimental-theoretical study of 268 nm UV light-induced dynamics in 2-iodothiophene (C$_4$H$_3$IS) is performed. The dynamics are experimentally monitored with a femtosecond XUV probe pulse that measures iodine N-edge 4d core-to-valence transitions. Experiments are complemented by density functional theory calculations of both the pump-pulse induced valence excitations as well as the XUV probe-induced core-to-valence transitions. Possible intramolecular relaxation dynamics are investigated by ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Gradual absorption changes up to ~0.5-1 ps after excitation are observed for both the parent molecular species and emerging iodine fragments, with the latter appearing with a characteristic rise time of 160$\pm$30 fs. Comparison of spectral intensities and energies with the calculations identify an iodine dissociation pathway initiated by a predominant $\pi\to\pi^*$ excitation. In contrast, initial excitation to a nearby n$_\perp\to\sigma^*$ excited state appears unlikely based on a significantly smaller oscillator strength and the absence of any corresponding XUV absorption signatures. Excitation to the $\pi\to\pi^*$ state is followed by contraction of the C-I bond, enabling a nonadiabatic transition to a dissociative $\pi\to\sigma_\textrm{C-I}^*$ state. For the subsequent fragmentation, a narrow bond-length region along the C-I stretch coordinate between 230 and 280 pm is identified, where the transition between the parent molecule and the thienyl radical + iodine atom products becomes prominent in the XUV spectrum due to rapid localization of two singly-occupied molecular orbitals on the two fragments.

Abstract:Excitons in a complex organic molecular crystal were studied by inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) for the first time. The dynamic dielectric response function is measured over a large momentum transfer region, from which an exciton dispersion of 130 meV is observed. Semiempirical quantum chemical calculations reproduce well the momentum dependence of the measured dynamic dielectric responses, and thus unambiguously indicate that the lowest Frenkel exciton is confined within a fraction of the complex molecule. Our results demonstrate that IXS is a powerful tool for studying excitons in complex organic molecular systems. Besides the energy position, the IXS spectra provide a stringent test on the validity of the theoretically calculated exciton wave functions.
