Statins Associated with 46% Rise in Type 2 Diabetes Risk, Study Shows

Abstract:Taking a statin is associated with a 46% increase in the risk of type 2 diabetes, a large follow-up study of men in Finland has found. The paper suggested that the effect was due to decreased insulin sensitivity and secretion. However, experts commenting on the findings have pointed out various flaws in the study and its presentation. The study followed up 8749 men aged 45 to 73 years for an average of 5.9 years. They were randomly selected from the population of Kuopio, eastern Finland, and none had diabetes at baseline.
