Abstract:A heterotrimetallic [Cu2PdL4]2+ lantern-type coordination cage has been assembled in a single self-assembly step. Heterotopic ligands, comprised of both carboxylate and pyridyl binding groups, facilitate the simultaneous coordination of Cu(II) and Pd(II) ions, respectively. The resultant cage is a fusion of the two common lantern-type cage motifs, Cu4L4 and Pd2L4. It is envisioned that this simple design strategy will ease the assembly of structurally complex, low-symmetry cages in general.

Abstract:Supramolecular nanoreactors featuring multiple catalytically active sites are of great importance, especially for asymmetric catalysis, and are yet challenging to construct. Here we report the design and assembly of five chiral single- and mixed-linker tetrahedral coordination cages using six dicarboxylate ligands derived-from enantiopure Mn(salen), Cr(salen) and/or Fe(salen) as linear linkers and four Cp3Zr3 clusters as three-connected vertices. The formation of these cages was confirmed by a variety of techniques including single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer, quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry. The cages feature a nanoscale hydrophobic cavity decorated with the same or different catalytically active sites, and the mixed-linker cage bearing Mn(salen) and Cr(salen) species is shown to be an efficient supramolecular catalyst for sequential asymmetric alkene epoxidation/epoxide ring-opening reactions with up to 99.9% ee. The cage catalyst demonstrates improved activity and enantioselectivity over the free catalysts owing to stabilization of catalytically active metallosalen units and concentration of reactants within the cavity. Manipulation of catalytic organic linkers in cages can control the activities and selectivities, which may provide new opportunities for the design and assembly of novel functional supramolecular architectures.

Abstract:Recently developed self-assembly strategies allow to rationally reduce the symmetry of metallosupramolecular architectures. In addition, the combination of multiple ligand types without creating compound mixtures has become possible. Among several approaches to realize non-statistical heteroleptic assembly, Coordination Sphere Engineering (CSE) makes use of secondary repulsive or attractive interactions in direct vicinity of the metal nodes. Previously, we used steric congestion to turn dinuclear [Pd2L4] cages with fourfold symmetry into [Pd2L3X2] (X = solvent, halide) bowl structures. Here, we introduce a new subtype of this strategy based on balancing hydrogen bonding and repulsive interactions between ligands carrying quinoline (L-Qu) and 1,8-naphthyridine (L-Na) donors to generate trans-[Pd2L2L2'] and [Pd2L3L'] cages, assisted by templation of encapsulated fullerenes. Combined with steric congestion caused by acridine (L-Ac) donors, we further report the first example of a heteroleptic [Pd2L2L'X-2] bowl. Formation, structure and fullerene binding ability of these metallo-supramolecular hosts were studied by NMR, mass spectrometry and single crystal X-ray diffraction.
Enantioselective Assembly and Recognition of Heterochiral Porous Organic Cages Deduced from Binary Chiral Components.

Abstract:Chiral recognition and discrimination is not only of significance in biological processes but also a powerful method to fabricate functional supramolecular materials. Herein, a pair of heterochiral porous organic cages (HPOC-1), out of four possible enantiomeric products, with mirror stereoisomeric crystal structures were cleanly prepared by condensation occurring in the exclusive combination of cyclohexanediamine and binaphthol-based tetraaldehyde enantiomers. Nuclear magnetic resonance and luminescence spectroscopy have been employed to monitor the assembly process of HPOC-1, revealing the clean formation of heterochiral organic cages due to the enantioselective recognition of (S,S)-binaphthol towards (R,R)-cyclohexanediamine derivatives and vice versa. Interestingly, HPOC-1 exhibits circularly polarized luminescence and enantioselective recognition of chiral substrates according to the circular dichroism spectral change. Theoretical simulations have been carried out, rationalizing both the enantioselective assembly and recognition of HPOC-1.

Abstract:The stereochemistry of chiral-at-metal complexes is much more abundant, albeit complicated, than chiral-at-carbon compounds, but how to make use of stereolabile metal-centers remains a formidable challenge due to the highly versatile coordination geometry of metal ions and racemization/epimerization problem. We demonstrate herein a stepwise assembly of configurationally stable [Pd6(FeL3)8]28+ (Δ/Λ-MOCs-42) homochiral octahedral cages from unstable D3-symmetry tris-chelate-Fe type metalloligands via strong face-directed stereochemical coupling and facile chiral-induced resolution processes based on stereodifferentiating host-guest dynamics. Kinetic studies reveal that the dissociation rate of MOC-42 cages is 100-fold slower than that of Fe-metalloligands and the racemization is effectively inhibited, making the cages retain their chirality over extended periods of time (>5 months) at room temperature. Recyclable enantioseparation of atropisomeric compounds has been successfully achieved, giving up to 88% ee.

Abstract:Traditional methods of assembling low-symmetry heterometallic cage architectures are limited to stepwise construction and combinations of inert and labile metal ions, affording complex, anisotropic cage structures by sacrificing synthetic ease. Herein, a heterometallic [Cu2PdL4]2+ lantern-type cage has been assembled in a single self-assembly step through the use of a heteroditopic ligand with two different metal-binding groups. The resultant cage complex is a fusion of two common lantern-type cage motifs – carboxylate-based metal–organic Cu4L4 cages and pyridyl-based Pd2L4 coordination cages. Evidence for heterometallic cage formation in solution was provided by 1H and DOSY NMR spectroscopy and electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) data, while circular dichroism (CD) spectra confirmed the helical nature of the assembly. It is envisioned that the simple design strategy presented herein will ease the assembly of other structurally complex, low-symmetry cage architectures.

Abstract:Utilizing the mixed-ligand strategy, six new homochiral coordination polymers based on enantiopure (1R,2R)-1,2-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid and varied auxiliary bipyridyl ligands, [Zn-3(L)(2)(OH)(2)] (1), [Cu-3(HL)(2)(L)(2)(bpy)(3)]center dot 4H(2)O (2), [M(L)(bpe)(2)(H2O)(2)]center dot H2O (M = Co, 3; Ni, 4; Cd, 5), [Ni(L)(bpa)(H2O)(3)]center dot 2H(2)O (6), [H2L = (1R,2R)-1,2-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid, bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine, bpe = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)-ethylene, bpa = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl) ethane] have been hydrothermally synthesized. Compound 1 shows a 2D 63-hcb network in the absence of any bipyridyl ligand. Compound 2 is a 2D (4,4)-connected grid network in the presence of bpy. Compounds 3-5 are isomorphous and feature 1D staggered-sculls chains by using bpe instead of bpy. Compound 6 possesses a 1D left-handed helical chain sustained by flexible bpa ligand. Each type of these coordination structures is further extended into 3D supramolecular frameworks through different intermolecular interactions. Solid-state circular dichroism (CD) spectra of compounds 1-6 exhibit strong CD signals. Magnetic susceptibility measurement indicates weak antiferromagnetic interactions between the Cu(II) ions in compound 2. Abstract:In order to study the emergence of homochirality during complex molecular systems, most works mainly concentrated on the resolution of a pair of enantiomers. However, the preference of homochiral over heterochiral isomers has been overlooked, with very limited examples focusing only on noncovalent interactions. We herein report on diastereomeric discrimination of twin-cavity cages (denoted as diphanes) against heterochiral tris-(2-aminopropyl)amine (TRPN) bearing triple stereocenters. This diastereomeric selectivity results from distinct spatial orientation of reactive secondary amines on TRPN. Homochiral TRPNs with all reactive moieties rotating in the same way facilitate the formation of homochiral and achiral meso diphanes with low strain energy, while heterochiral TRPNs with uneven orientation of secondary amines preclude the formation of cage-like entity, since the virtual diphanes exhibit considerably high strain. Moreover, homochiral diphanes self-assemble into an acentric superstructure composed of single-handed helices, which exhibits interesting nonlinear optical behavior. Such a property is a unique occurrence for organic cages, which thus showcases their potential to spawn novel materials with interesting properties and functions.

Abstract:Chiral twisted prisms, cuboids, and capped cages are constructed through the full utilization of flexible tartrate ligands. The self‐assembly of different components in varying ratios, coupled with the use of ligands that can accommodate a range of coordination numbers, has enabled the emergence of a rich array of coordination patterns. Homochiral triangular prisms, cuboid cages, and capped polyhedral cages are successfully synthesized via coordination‐driven self‐assembly. Typical tartrate ligands demonstrated notable torsional flexibility and variable coordination numbers, allowing for diverse coordination patterns, including saturated chelation and terminal mono‐coordination with half‐sandwich rhodium and iridium fragments. The ligand lengths, molar ratios, and metal vertices are meticulously designed and fine‐tuned to yield chiral cages with entirely distinct architectures. Tartrate ligand exhibits abundant hydrogen bonding interactions and chiral induction capabilities, these supramolecular assemblies are characterized by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance, and circular dichroism spectroscopy. An efficient method is developed for constructing chiral structurally versatile cage‐like entities, facilitating self‐assembly in complicated multi‐component systems.

Design and Assembly of a Chiral Metallosalen-Based Octahedral Coordination Cage for Supramolecular Asymmetric Catalysis.

Abstract:Supramolecular containers featuring both high catalytic activity and high enantioselectivity represent a design challenge of practical importance. Herein, it is demonstrated that a chiral octahedral coordination cage can be constructed by using twelve enantiopure Mn(salen)-derived dicarboxylic acids as linear linkers and six Zn-4-p-tert-butylsulfonylcalix[4]arene clusters as tetravalent four-connected vertices. The porous cage features a large hydrophobic cavity (approximate to 3944 angstrom(3)) decorated with catalytically active metallosalen species and is shown to be an efficient and recyclable asymmetric catalyst for the oxidative kinetic resolution of racemic secondary alcohols and the epoxidation of olefins with up to >99% enantiomeric excess. The cage architecture not only prevents intermolecular deactivation and stabilizes the Mn(salen) catalysts but also encapsulates substrates and concentrates reactants in the cavity, resulting in enhanced reactivity and enantioselectivity relative to the free metallosalen catalyst.
Homochiral Cu(I) Coordination Polymers Based on a Double-Stranded Helical Building Block from Achiral Ligands: Symmetry-Breaking Crystallization, Photophysical and Photocatalytic Properties

Abstract:A pair of homochiral coordination polymers, [Cu(DPT)]n (1M and 1P, HDPT = 3,5-di-4-pyridinyl-2H-tetrazole), were assembled from achiral precursors. Crystal structure analysis showed that they are chiral three-dimensional (3D) coordination polymers based on a new double-stranded helical building block that is composed of two different 1D helices. Interestingly, rare symmetry-breaking crystallization was observed, in which the possibility of obtaining enantio-enriched bulk product with excessive M enantiomers (1-A) was obviously higher than that for P enantiomers (1-B) as demonstrated in multiple, repeated experiments with single-crystal diffraction and vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra. Moreover, compound [Cu(DPT)]n shows good chemical stability in water, with pH values ranging from 3 to 13, as well as in many common organic solvents. Photophysical properties, including thermochromic properties and two-photon excited luminescence, were studied, and the potential for applications in temperature sensing was exhibited. In addition, the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue in water indicated that compound [Cu(DPT)]n can be used as a photocatalyst.
Enantiopure Trigonal Bipyramidal Coordination Cages Templated by in Situ Self-Organized D2h-symmetric Anions

Abstract:The control of a molecule’s geometry, chirality, and physical properties has long been a challenging pursuit. Our study introduces a dependable method for assembling D3-symmetric trigonal bipyramidal coordination cages. Specifically, D2h-symmetric anions, like oxalate and chloranilic anions, self-organize around a metal ion to form chiral-at-metal anionic complexes, which template the formation of D3-symmetric trigonal bipyramidal coordination cages. The chirality of the trigonal bipyramid is determined by the point chirality of chiral amines used in forming the ligands. Additionally, these cages exhibit chiral selectivity for the included chiral-at-metal anionic template. Our method is broadly applicable to various ligand systems, enabling the construction of larger cages when larger D2h-symmetric anions, like chloranilic anions, are employed. Furthermore, we successfully produce enantiopure trigonal bipyramidal cages with anthracene-containing backbones using this approach, which would be otherwise infeasible. These cages exhibit circularly polarized luminescence, which is modulable through the reversible photo-oxygenation of the anthracenes.
Coal-Tar Dye-based Coordination Cages and Helicates

Abstract:A strategy to implement four members of the classic coal-tar dye family, Michler's ketone, methylene blue, rhodamine B, and crystal violet, into [Pd2L4] self-assemblies is introduced. Chromophores were incorporated into bis-monodentate ligands using piperazine linkers that allow to retain the auxochromic dialkyl amine functionalities required for intense colors deep in the visible spectrum. Upon palladium coordination, ligands with pyridine donors form lantern-shaped dinuclear cages while quinoline donors lead to strongly twisted [Pd2L4] helicates in solution. In one case, single crystal X-ray diffraction revealed rearrangement to a [Pd3L6] ring structure in the solid state. For nine examined derivatives, showing colors from yellow to deep violet, CD spectroscopy discloses different degrees of chiral induction by an enantiomerically pure guest. Ion mobility mass spectrometry allows to distinguish two binding modes. Self-assemblies based on this new ligand class promise application in chiroptical recognition, photo-redox catalysis and optical materials.

Abstract:It is extremely difficult to anticipate the structure and the stereochemistry of a complex, particularly when the ligand is flexible and the metal node adopts diverse coordination numbers. When trivalent lanthanides (LnIII) and enantiopure amino acid ligands are utilized as building blocks, self-assembly sometimes yields rare chiral polynuclear structures. In this study, an enantiopure carboxyl-functionalized amino acid-based ligand with C3 symmetry reacts with lanthanum cations to give a homochiral porous coordination cage, (Δ/Λ)12-PCC-57. The dodecanuclear lanthanide cage has an unprecedented octahedral "cage-in-cage" framework. During the self-assembly, the chirality is transferred from the enantiopure ligand and fixed by the binuclear lanthanide cluster to give 12 metal centers that have either Δ or Λ homochiral stereochemistry. The cage exhibits excellent enantioselective separation of racemic alcohols, 2,3-dihydroquinazolinones, and multiple commercially available drugs. This finding exhibits a rare example of a multinuclear lanthanide complex with a dual-walled topology and homochirality. Abstract:The homochiral exo-bidentate ligands (S)-2,2'-bis(pyridylmethyleneoxy)-1,1'-binaphthyl [(S)-L] and (R)-2,2'-bis(pyridylmethyleneoxy)-1,1'-binaphthyl [(R)-L] were synthesized and employed for the preparation of coordination complexes with the aim of investigating the effect of an axially chiral 1,1'-binaphthyl connector on self-assembly process. Five homochiral complexes, [Ag{(S)-L}(ClO4)](n) (1), [Ag{(R)-L}(ClO4)](n) (2), [{Cd{(S)-L)(H2O)Cl-2)(H2O)(0.5)](n) (3), [(Zn{(S)L)Cl-2)(DMF)(0.5)(H2O)(0.5)](n) (4), and [(Pd-2{(S)-L)(2)Cl-4)(H2O)(1.5)](n) (5), have been prepared and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. The enantionteric complexes 1 and 2 are isomorphous and are formed through interconnection of ligands and two-coordinate Ag-I centers. Complex 3 possesses a similar structural framework to 1 and is formed with two nitrogen atoms from (S)-L coordinating to six-coordinate Cd-II in a trans mode. The interlocking in part of the adjacent, one-dimensional helix-like chains stabilizes its structure. Complex 4 is a one-dimensional zigzag chain and is formed through interconnection of (S)-L and ZnCl2 units. Pd(II) Coordination Sphere Engineering: Pyridine Cages, Quinoline Bowls, and Heteroleptic Pills Binding One or Two Fullerenes.

Abstract:Fullerenes and their derivatives are of tremendous technological relevance. Synthetic access and application are still hampered by tedious purification protocols, peculiar solubility, and limited control over regioselective derivatization. We present a modular self-assembly system based on a new low-molecular-weight binding motif, appended by two palladium(II)-coordinating units of different steric demands, to either form a [Pd2L14]4+ cage or an unprecedented [Pd2L23(MeCN)2]4+ bowl (with L1 = pyridyl, L2 = quinolinyl donors). The former was used as a selective induced-fit receptor for C60. The latter, owing to its more open structure, also allows binding of C70 and fullerene derivatives. By exposing only a fraction of the bound guests' surface, the bowl acts as fullerene protecting group to control functionalization, as demonstrated by exclusive monoaddition of anthracene. In a hierarchical manner, sterically low-demanding dicarboxylates were found to bridge pairs of bowls into pill-shaped dimers, able to host two fullerenes. The hosts allow transferring bound fullerenes into a variety of organic solvents, extending the scope of possible derivatization and processing methodologies.
Modifying Π-Conjugated Coordination Silver Cation Onto Homochiral Zirconium-Organic Cage for Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Abstract:Although many racemic M4L6 cages have been synthesized, little attention has been paid to the resolution of M4L6 cages because resolution of these cages is very difficult. To explore the use of optically pure M4L6 cages in chiral applications, it is important to obtain a single enantiomer. In this work, the anionic ΔΔΔΔ-Zr4L6 and ΛΛΛΛ-Zr4L6 (L = embonate) cages have been completely separated by introducing chiral organic ligands R/S-BINAP and 1S,2S/1R,2R-DPEN, respectively, and the active vertex of homochiral Zr4L6 cage traps π-conjugated coordination silver cations (such as [Ag2(DPPM)2]2+, chiral [Ag2(PPh3)2(DPEN)]2+ and [Ag(PPh3)(DPEN)]+), obtaining two pair of pure enantiomers (PTC-375(Δ/Λ) and PTC-376(Δ/Λ)). Interestingly, the chiral resolution and surface modification of such zirconium cage endow it with homochirality and significant circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) response, and PTC-376 enantiomers show a CPL output with glum values up to ∼1.4×10−2. This work not only provides a new resolution strategy for metal-organic cages, but also expands their chiral application especially in CPL field.
