Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) show great advantages as new kinds of active materials for energy storage. In this study, bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (Ni/Co-MOFs) with nanosheet-assembled flower-like structures were synthesized by etching Ni-MOF microspheres in a cobalt nitrate solution. It can be clearly observed that the amount of Co(NO3)2 and etching time play crucial roles in the formation of Ni/Co-MOF nanosheets. The Ni/Co-MOFs were used as electrode materials for supercapacitors and the optimized Ni/Co-MOF-5 exhibited the highest capacitances of 1220.2 F g-1 and 986.7 F g-1 at current densities of 1 A g-1 and 10 A g-1, respectively. Ni/Co-MOF-5 was further sulfurized, and the derived Ni-Co-S electrode showed a higher specific capacitance of 1377.5 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1 and a retention of 89.4% when the current density was increased to 10 A g-1, indicating superior rate capability. Furthermore, Ni/Co-MOF-5 and Ni-Co-S showed excellent cycling stability, i.e. about 87.8% and 93.7% of initial capacitance can be still maintained after 3000 cycles of charge-discharge. More interestingly, the Ni/Co-MOF-5//AC ASC shows an energy density of 30.9 W h kg-1 at a power density of 1132.8 W kg-1, and the Ni-Co-S//AC ASC displays a high energy density of 36.9 W h kg-1 at a power density of 1066.42 W kg-1. These results demonstrate that the as-synthesized bimetallic Ni/Co-MOF nanosheets and their derived nickel-cobalt sulfides have promising applications in electrochemical supercapacitors.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are both a series of crystalline porous materials. MOFs, COFs and their derivatives have attracted much attention in energy storage devices due to their highly ordered structures, large surface areas, tunable pore sizes and topologies, and well-defined redox-active porous skeletons. They must also have structural stability, an abundance of redox-active sites and high electronic conductivity for use in high-performance supercapacitor electrodes. We review the recent research progress on the design of MOFs and COFs, and their hybrids with conductive materials (e.g. conductive polymer, graphene and carbon nanotubes), and MOF- and COF-derived carbon materials. Their chemical and physical properties, capacitive performance and structure-property relationships are discussed. Finally, the challenges and prospects of MOF- and COF-based electrode materials are presented.

Abstract:Up to now, the mainstream adoption of renewable energy has brought about substantial transformations in the electricity and energy sector. This shift has garnered considerable attention within the scientific community. Supercapacitors, known for their exceptional performance metrics like good charge/discharge capability, strong power density, as well as extended cycle longevity, have gained widespread traction across various sectors, including transportation and aviation. Metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) with unique traits including adaptable structure, highly customizable synthetic methods, and high specific surface area, have emerged as strong candidates for electrode materials. For enhancing the performance, MOFs are commonly compounded with other conducting materials to increase capacitance. This paper provides a detailed analysis of various common preparation strategies and characteristics of MOFs. It summarizes the recent application of MOFs and their derivatives as supercapacitor electrodes alongside other carbon materials, metal compounds, and conductive polymers. Additionally, the challenges encountered by MOFs in the realm of supercapacitor applications are thoroughly discussed. Compared to previous reviews, the content of this paper is more comprehensive, offering readers a deeper understanding of the diverse applications of MOFs. Furthermore, it provides valuable suggestions and guidance for future progress and development in the field of MOFs.

Abstract:As a class of porous materials with crystal lattices, metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs), featuring an outstanding specific surface area, tunable functionality, and versatile structures, have attracted huge attention in the past two decades. Since the first conductive MOF was successfully synthesized in 2009, considerable progress has been achieved for the development of conductive MOFs, allowing their use in diverse applications for electrochemical energy storage. Among those applications, supercapacitors have received great interest because of their high power density, fast charging ability, and excellent cycling stability. In this review, we summarize the efforts hitherto devoted to the synthesis and design of conductive MOFs and their auspicious capacitive performance. Using conductive MOF as a unique platform medium, we discuss the electronic and molecular aspects of the energy storage mechanism in supercapacitors with MOF electrodes, highlighting the advantages and limitations to inspire new ideas for the development of conductive MOFs for supercapacitors.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:The energy storage field has witnessed a dramatic expansion in terms of short charging time of supercapacitors, especially in the highly active electrode materials. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials have been extensively applied as precursors or templates for the synthesis of carbon, metal oxides/sulfides-based compounds as high-performance electrodes in supercapacitors. The MOFs-derived materials can be broadly divided into two groups: MOFs-derived porous carbon and MOFs-derived metal oxide/sulfide compounds. These MOFs-derived materials are characterized by unique porous structures, controllable structures, high surface area, good conductivity (MOFs-derived carbon) and outstanding electrochemical stability, meeting the requirements of the desirable specific capacitance and long-term cyclic performance of both electrochemical double layer capacitors and pseudocapacitors. However, MOFs-derived materials still suffer from the complex synthesis process and high production cost of MOFs precursors, difficulties in mass production, and unstable structure in highly corrosive electrolyte. In addition, the electrical conductivity of MOFs-derived metal oxides/sulfides needs to be further improved. In this review, we summarize the recent progresses in the development of MOFs-derived porous carbons and metal oxide/sulfide compounds and their applications in supercapacitors. The prospects and challenges of MOFs-derived carbon and metal oxide/sulfide compounds as highly effective and durable electrodes in supercapacitors are discussed.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are one of the most advanced crystal materials assembled by organic ligands as linkers and metal ions as center ions, which can be used as excellent materials for batteries and supercapacitors due to their high adjustable pore sizes, controllable structures, and specific surface areas. Carbon-based functional materials (e.g., graphene, reduced graphene oxide and carbon nanotubes) have excellent electrochemical properties, thermal stability and electrical conductivity. The controllable integration of MOFs and carbon-based functional materials can further enhance the electrochemical stability and electrical conductivity of pristine MOFs. The assembled MOF/carbon-based functional materials composites possess superior rate, cycling properties and high reversibility, enabling the obtained MOF/carbon-based functional materials composites to be applied in wider fields. This review summarizes the recent research progress of MOF/carbon-based functional materials composites in the field of batteries and supercapacitors. In addition, the difficulties and challenges encountered by MOF/carbon-based functional materials composites are put forward. Finally, the future development of MOF/carbon-based functional material composites in electrochemical energy storage devices is prospected.

Abstract:With continuous development of electronics, the requirements for power supply systems are increasing. Supercapacitors (SCs), which have high energy density and excellent power output performance, are ideal power supplies for new generation of miniaturized, intelligent and wearable electronic devices. Thus, developing SCs with fast charge-discharge speed and high stability is a key research topic in the field of energy storage. As the most important part of SCs, electrode materials are critical to its performance. Due to the excellent performances of high-ordered pore structure, large specific surface area, diverse morphologies and dimensions, and adjustable conductivity, conductive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials have shown great potential as promising SCs electrode materials, and have attracted wide attention. This review introduces the structure, conductive mechanism and preparation methods of conductive MOFs following a short introduction of SCs, describes its design strategy as SCs electrode materials, reviews the research progress of conductive MOFs in the field of SCs, and prospects its future application.

Abstract:Two new metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), [Co(bcpp)(bbip)]·H2O (Co-MOF) and [Ni(bcpp)(bbip)]·H2O (Ni-MOF), have been generated based on a V-type flexible carboxylic ligand 3,5-bis(4-carboxyl phenoxy) pyridine (H2bcpp) and a rigid N-donor ligand 1,1′-(1,4-phenylene)bis(1H-benzimidazole) (bbip) by a solvothermal method. Co-MOF and Ni-MOF are isostructural with a 2-fold interpenetrated layered structure. Moreover, a series of bimetallic Co x Ni y -MOFs (x/y = 1:1, 2.5:1, 2.75:1, 3:1, 3.25:1, and 3.5:1) were obtained by using one-pot synthesis. Owing to their mixed metallic components and internal layered structure, the bimetallic Co x Ni y -MOFs possess a remarkable electrochemical storage property. Significantly, the Co2.75Ni1-MOF has high specific capacitance (699 F g–1) at 0.5 A g–1 and good cycling durability (retained 72.7% over 3100 turns). Additionally, an asymmetrical ultra-capacitor based on Co2.75Ni1-MOF and activated carbon (AC) delivers a maximum energy density of 20.44 Wh kg–1 at 387.49 W kg–1 and a high cycle-to-cycle stability with 85.4% of the primary capacitance over 15,000 turns.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been identified as promising electrode materials that increase energy densities in supercapacitors. Importantly, a greater level of understanding of charge storage mechanisms and transport behavior within these materials will facilitate improved design strategies. Here, we present results from the synthesis and characterization of a cobalt-based layered metal−organic framework (Co-LMOF) {[Co(Hmt) 2 (tfbdc)(H 2 O) 2 ]·(H 2 tfbdc)·(EtOH) 2 } n (H 2 tfbdc = 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoroterephthalic acid; Hmt = hexamethylenetetramine). Electrochemical measurements were performed with Co-LMOF/Carbon Black/PTFE electrodes that demonstrated that this material indeed shows notable performance potential as a supercapacitor electrode despite electrically insulating behavior determined experimentally and from density of states calculations. Nickel foam and carbon-based current collectors were used to distinguish Co-LMOF redox behavior from double layer and current collector contributions. We also cross-correlated findings from solid state NMR, quasi-elastic neutron scattering, and theoretical modeling to gain new insights into the dynamics of the water and ethanol present in this material. This information was coupled with characterization tools of nitrogen gas sorption, X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Finally, electrode degradation was evaluated for 10 k galvanostatic charge-discharge cycles with FTIR, Raman and energy dispersion X-ray spectroscopy.

Abstract:Supercapacitors are important energy storage devices due to its fast charging/discharging features and long cycle life. Design and fabrication of superior supercapacitor electrodes is of significance to the improvement of the overall performances of a device. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely reported for supercapacitor applications due to their high-tunability, including favorable porous properties, tunable chemical compositions, controllable crystal structures, and adjustable geometry morphologies. In this review, the recent reports focusing on MOF-based supercapacitor applications are elaborated. Particularly, the recyclable MOF-hydrolyzing strategy is introduced, during which the organic ligands can be recollected to drastically reduce the costs. Furthermore, challenges and perspectives of MOFs for supercapacitor electrode applications are also summarized.

Abstract:Supercapacitors play an important role in power systems since they are a key part of electrochemical energy storage devices. To assemble high-performance supercapacitors, it is crucial to discover and innovate high-capacitive electrode materials. Recently, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives have received wide concerns as electrode materials for supercapacitors, not only because of their high pore volume and large surface area for ions and electrons insertion and transportation, but also due to the intrinsic metal active sites that possibly offer extra faradaic pseudocapacitance. Additionally, the abundant species of MOFs with various morphologies also feature advantages in enriching the structural diversity of electrodes. In this paper, we first report the latest research progress and demonstrate the feasibility of pure MOFs for directly constructing supercapacitor electrodes. Furthermore, different MOF derivatives, including porous carbons, transition metal oxides, metal hydroxides and MOF composites for supercapacitors, are summarized, and their electrochemical performances with corresponding energy storage mechanisms are presented in detail. Finally, the perspectives for MOF-based materials applied in supercapacitors are discussed, aiming to provide a guideline for further research based on these promising materials.

Abstract:Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are a kind of porous coordination polymer supported by organic ligands with metal ions as connection points. They have a controlled structure and porosity and a significant specific surface area, and can be used as functional linkers or sacrificial templates. However, long diffusion pathways, low conductivity, low cycling stability, and the presence of few exposed active sites limit the direct application of MOFs in energy storage applications. The targeted design of MOFs has the potential to overcome these limitations. This study proposes a facile method to grow and immobilize MOFs on layered double hydroxides through an in situ design. The proposed method imparts not only enhanced conductivity and cycling stability, but also provides additional active sites with excellent specific capacitance properties due to the interconnectivity of MOF nanoparticles and layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets. Due to this favorable heterojunction hook, the NiMo-LDH@NiCo-MOF composite exhibits a large specific capacitance of 1536 F·g−1 at 1 A·g−1. In addition, the assembled NiMo-LDH@NiCo-MOF//AC asymmetric supercapacitor can achieve a high-energy density value of 60.2 Wh·kg−1 at a power density of 797 W·kg−1, indicating promising applications.

Abstract:As an attractive electrode material of supercapacitors, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have been greatly exploited. However, the nearly exclusive microporous structure prevented their advantages from being fully utilized, restraining their electrochemical performance. In this work, a hierarchical porous Zr-MOF (HP-Zr-MOF) was prepared via ligand thermolysis method, and its electrochemical performance was investigated. HP-Zr-MOF exhibits a high specific capacitance (492.7 F g −1 , 1 A g −1 ), and good rate performance (362.5 F g −1 , 10 A g −1 ). An asymmetric supercapacitor based on HP-Zr-MOF and activated carbon electrodes was assembled, which delivers a specific capacitance of 107.5 F g −1 , and an energy density of 38 Wh kg −1 with a power density of 1341 W kg −1 at 1 A g −1 , showing prospective prospect of hierarchical porous MOFs-based electrodes in energy storage application.

Abstract:Introducing a second metal ion into the monometallic metal organic frameworks (MOFs) is considered as an effective method to improve the energy storage performance of monometallic MOFs. Herein, a Co/Cu bimetallic metal organic framework was successfully prepared by a facile hydrothermal crystallization method. Interestingly, the Co/Cu MOF composite displays unique morphology composed of special spherical structure and the lamellar structure, which is significantly different from the small lamellar structure of Cu MOF and the large lamellar structure of Co MOF. More interestingly, the Co/Cu MOF exhibits a high specific capacity of 70.7 m Ah g −1 (462. 7 F g −1 ) at 1 A g −1 when the electrolyte is 1 M KOH solution, which is significantly higher than that of the monometallic metal–organic frameworks of Co and Cu. The composite still gives excellent rate capacity at high current density (76 % capacitance retention at 10 A g −1 ) and cycling performance (capacitance remains at 71 % after 5000 cycles). The reason for the excellent energy storage of Co/Cu MOF would be attributed to the unique morphology and excellent conductivity. Moreover, the asymmetric device was constructed with activated carbon (AC) as the negative electrode and Co/Cu MOF as the positive electrode. The device provides an energy density of 47.08 W h kg −1 when the power density is 750 W kg −1 .
