Abstract:The unique flowerlike SnO2 hollow nanosheets with multilayer walls have been successfully synthesized by a simple anneal-etching strategy based on flowerlike ZnSn(OH)(6) solid nanosheets. FESEM and TEM observations reveal that this new type of nonspherical SnO2 hollow structure is composed of hexagonal hollow nanosheets with mesoporous and multilayered interiors, where the secondary building blocks are numerous nanoparticles. Synthetic step-related investigation demonstrates that the formation of flowerlike hollow nanosheets with mesoporous and multilayer walls are ascribed to the final well-preserved shapes of flowerlike ZnSn(OH)6 solid template and the critical hollowing process in the last etching treatment. The well-aligned porous and multilayer walls of SnO2 hollow nanosheets retain actual high surface area and surface accessibility, and the improved gas sensing performances can be anticipated. It is found that our SnO2 nanostructures have a response of 18.3-50 ppm acetone at the optimal working temperature of 300 degrees C, and the response time and recovery time are within 0.9 and 5.8 s, respectively. Abstract:Flowerlike nanometer scaled tin oxide (nano-SnO2) was synthesized by a novel and green method without annealing. Accordingly, a dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) gas sensor based on a quartz crystal microbalance was fabricated and studied. According to the experimental results, the sensor with the flowerlike nano-SnO2 sensing film working at room temperature exhibited good sensitivity and selectivity as well as a rapid response to DMMP. An environmentally friendly idea to synthesize material in a green way and fabricate sensors to detect harmful or toxic gases was realized.

Abstract:A new type of nonspherical yolk-shell structures in the case of SnO2 has been successfully prepared by a simple anneal-etching strategy without employing any additional templates or capping agents. The morphological and structural characterization reveals that SnO2 yolk-shell particles have a hierarchical architecture with penetrable multi-walled surfaces and cuboctahedral shape, where the secondary building blocks are numerous nanoparticles. The synthetic step-dependent evolution process of SnO2 yolk-shell cuboctahedra is investigated and the possible formation mechanism is also discussed. To demonstrate the merit of unique structure for the fast mass transfer, sensor based on SnO2 products has been fabricated and the results exhibit excellent sensing performances for toluene detection. It is found that our SnO2 yolk-shell structures have a response of 28.6–20 ppm toluene at the optimal working temperature of 250 °C, and the response time and recovery time are within 1.8 and 4.1 s, respectively.

Abstract:Unique SnO2 triple-shelled hollow cages with a well-defined cubic shape have been successfully prepared via additional deposition of polycrystalline SnO2 on hybrid Zn2SnO4/SnO2 double-shelled nanotemplates followed by removal of Zn2SnO4. Structural characterization demonstrates that SnO2 triple-shelled hollow cubes (THCs) are hierarchically composed of numerous primary nanoparticles with a size of about several nanometers. The synthetic step-dependent multilayered evolution mechanism can be addressed in terms of different hollowing strategies. Based on the unique less-agglomerated multilayered and porous configuration, the gas sensing performances of SnO2 THCs exhibit an obvious improvement of response and shortened response-recovery characteristics at their optimal working temperature, compared with those of referenced single- and double-shelled SnO2 nanostructures.
Synthesis, characterizations and improved gas-sensing performance of SnO2 nanospike arrays

Abstract:Using a tin-oleate complex as the precursor and the capping agent, we successfully synthesized ultrafine SnO2 nanospike arrays with diameter 6-15 nm and length 150 nm, growing along the [001] direction from a simple hydrothermal route. The as-obtained SnO2 products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electronic microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, UV-vis absorption spectrum, photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopy. As-synthesized SnO2 nanospike arrays exhibited improved gas sensing performance as compared to bulk SnO2 due to the small grain size-distribution and specific surface properties. The detection limits of the sensor were found to be down to 0.5 ppm for acetone, ethanol and 1.0 ppm for methanol with response time as short as 5 s.

Abstract:SnO2 urchin-like structures composed of nanorods with diameters of 10–15nm and lengths of 50–70nm have been hydrothermally synthesized via a H2O2-assisted route without any surfactant, using SnCl2 as raw material. With the addition of methenamine (HMT), SnO2 hollow microspheres with diameters of 2–3μm and shell thickness of 60–140nm were also prepared. The as-obtained products were examined using diverse techniques including X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected-area electron diffraction (SAED), high-resolution TEM and photoluminescence spectra. The gas sensitivity experiments have demonstrated that the as-synthesized SnO2 materials exhibit good sensitivity to alcohol vapors, which may offer potential applications in gas sensors.

Abstract:Novel hierarchical urchin-like hollow SnO2 nanostructures have been synthesized via a facile one-pot template-free hydrothermal approach. The size and density of the SnO2 prickles as well as the morphology of the SnO2 spheres can be modified by tuning the synthetic parameters such as temperature, time, concentration, as well as pH value. The novel hierarchical nano-sized SnO2 hollow urchins possess enriched prickles with diameters of 5-20 nm and lengths of <70 nm and high surface area up to 116 m(2) g(-1), exhibiting advanced sensing performance to the ethanol vapor due to the special hierarchical nanostructures and being promising for the potential gas sensor material.

Abstract:Semiconductor tin oxide (SnO2) is acknowledged to be one of the semiconductor oxides with most potential for utilization as nitrogen dioxide (NO2)-sensor materials. However, the challenge to improve the gas sensitivity still remains, and this limits the full realization of the SnO2 sensor potential. In this paper, enhanced gas sensitivity obtained by the formation of a SnO2/niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) hybrid structure is reported. As the NO2 concentration is lower to 3 ppm, the measured resistance in the SnO2/Nb2O5-based sensor is still 2.5 times larger than that in a pristine SnO2-based sensor. With an increase in the NO2 concentration, the response time of the SnO2/Nb2O5-based sensor decreases sharply whereas the pristine SnO2-based sensor response time increases. The enhanced performance is attributed to the presence of more oxygen vacancies and a higher specific surface area in the hybrid structure induced by the introduction of Nb2O5. These results provide some general guidelines for the selection of compositions to enhance the sensor performance.

Abstract:Tin oxide (SnO2) hollow nanospheres have been successfully synthesized from mixed ethanol and water systems containing the surfactants sodium dodecyl benzenesulfonate (SDBS) and terephthalic acid. Systematic studies reveal that terephthalic acid plays pivotal roles in the formation of hollow nanospheres. In the present work, the as-synthesized SnO2 hollow nanospheres exhibit excellent room-temperature ethanol sensitivity and potential catalytic ability towards the electrooxidation of ethanol, and thus are expected to be economical alternative catalysts and useful in industrial applications such as room-temperature gas sensors. Abstract:Multidimensional nanostructures (0D–1D composite nanostructure) SnO2 nanoparticles in SnO2 nanotubes were easily synthesized by combining the co-precipitation method with the coaxial electrospinning method. SnO2 nanoparticles with a size of about 30 nm were synthesized by co-precipitation method, and SnO2 nanoparticles in SnO2 nanotubes were synthesized by coaxial electrospinning by using a dispersion of SnO2 nanoparticles as the inner precursor. Such 0D–1D SnO2 nanostructures have advantages of the enhanced gas sensing performances due to the improved specific surface area and gas accessibility. The multidimensional nanostructures SnO2 nanoparticles in SnO2 nanotubes exhibit an enhanced gas sensing performances in comparison to 0D SnO2 nanoparticles and 1D SnO2 nanotubes.

Abstract:A low-cost and environmentally friendly hydrothermal route to the synthesis of hierarchical SnO2 nanostructures was described. The structure and morphology of the as-prepared product were characterized by various characterization techniques. The results revealed that these nanostructures were built from two-dimensional (2 D) nanosheets with the thicknesses of about 8 nm. Moreover, the amount of hydrochloric acid played a crucial role in the control of the final size and morphology of product. Gas sensors based on hierarchical SnO2 nanostructures were fabricated, and their gas sensing properties were tested for response to ethanol, acetone, formaldehyde, CO, toluene, H2 and H2S gases. The sensor showed excellent selectivity toward ethanol. At an ethanol concentration of 100 ppm, the response of the hierarchical SnO2 nanosheets was about 33, which was about 2.5 times higher than that of the nanoparticles. The response time of the sensor to 60 ppm ethanol was shorter than 11 s at the optimal operating temperature of 275 °C. The enhancement in gas sensing properties was attributed to their unique structures.

Abstract:In this paper, three-dimensional (3D) SnO2 hollow microspheres composed of numerous subunits of nanorods are prepared through a facile one-pot hydrothermal method. These SnO2 microspheres are structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscope, and high resolution transmission electron microscope, respectively. It is shown that the hierarchical SnO2 microspheres ranged from 600 to 900 nm in diameter are constructed from self-assembled one-dimensional tetragonal prism SnO2 nanorods. Most importantly, the gas sensor based on these hierarchical SnO2 microspheres exhibits excellent selectivity and fast response-recovery capability to ethanol. The response and recovery times are 2.6 s and 11 s, respectively, if the sensor is exposed to 50 ppm ethanol at the optimal operating temperature of 280 degrees C. Abstract:Hierarchically porous intestine-like SnO2 hollow nanostructures of different dimension were successfully synthesized via a facile, organic template free, H2O2-assisted method at room temperature. The morphology as well as texture (congregated solid sphere, intestine-like solid nanostructure, hollow core–shell one, and intestine-like hollow one) of SnO2 materials can be controlled by varying H2O2 concentration and the size of intestine-like hollow SnO2 can be tuned in the range of 20–120nm by changing SnSO4 concentration. The hierarchically porous intestine-like SnO2 has high specific surface area (142m2g−1). The gas-sensing behaviors of the intestine-like SnO2 material to different gas probes such as ethanol, H2, CO, methane, and butane have been investigated; among them a high selectivity to ethanol was achieved.

Abstract:Hierarchical meso-macroporous SnO2 was synthesized by a sol–gel process using carbonaceous spheres as sacrificial templates. The morphology of meso-macroporous structures can be controlled by adjusting the sintering temperature. Compared with the traditional SnO2, the hierarchical meso-macroporous SnO2 exhibited higher gas response and shorter response and recovery times in detecting indoor air pollutants including ethanol, benzene and toluene. With regard to the gas sensing property, mesopores provide plenty of active sites for surface chemical reactions, on the one hand. On the other hand, the gas diffusion in the sensing film can be improved by macropores greatly. The morphology and structures were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) respectively.

Abstract:Hierarchical and hollow SnS2nanostructures as precursors were fabricated via a surfactant-assisted assembly process using sodium dodecyl sulfate as soft templates. The as-prepared SnS2nanostructures were further oxidized to form porous SnO2conversion for investigating their gas-sensing properties in drug-precursor detection. On the basis of a series of time- and ratio-dependent reactions, a formation mechanism of the special nanostructures and factors influencing morphology and structure were determined. Gas-sensing measurements revealed that the porous and hierarchical SnO2hollow nanostructures were sensitive to drug precursors, indicating promising applications in environmental monitoring and public safety investigation. In addition, we found that the assembled SnO2nanomaterials possessed significantly enhanced gas-sensing properties compared with unassembled SnO2with a solid interior.

Abstract:Owing to their distinct chemical and physical properties, mesoporous metal oxide semiconductors have shown great application potential in catalysis, electrochemistry, energy conversion, and energy storage. In this study, mesoporous crystalline SnO2 materials have been synthesized through an evaporation-induced co-assembly (EICA) method using poly(ethylene oxide)-b-polystyrene diblock copolymers as the template, tin chlorides as the tin sources, and tetrahydrofuran as, the solvent. By controlling conditions of the co-assembly process and employing a carbon-supported thermal treatment strategy, highly ordered mesoporous SnO2 materials with a hexagonal mesostructure (space group P6(3)/mmc) and crystalline pore walls can be obtained. The mesoporous SnO2 is employed for fabricating gas sensor nanodevices which exhibit an excellent sensing performance toward H2S with high sensitivity (170, 50 ppm) and superior stability, owing to its high surface area (98 m(2)/g), well-connected mesopores of ca. 18.0 nm, and high density of active sites in the crystalline pore walls. The chemical mechanism study reveals that both SO2 and SnS2 are generated during the gas sensing process on the SnO2-based sensors.
Enhanced Toluene Sensing Performances of Pd- Loaded SnO2 Cubic Nanocages with Porous Nanoparticle-Assembled Shells

Abstract:Pure and Pd-loaded SnO2 cubic nanocages with hierarchically nanoparticle-assembled and porous shells have been successfully fabricated through a straightforward multi-step route. The synthetic step dependent structure evolution and the formation mechanism have been discussed. Furthermore, the toluene-sensing performances of these Pd-loaded SnO2 nanocages are elaborated and compared with those of pure SnO2. The toluene sensing results demonstrate that Pd-loaded SnO2 nanocages with the optimal loading amount of 1.0 mol% show a low detection limit (0.1 ppm) with response of 41.4-20 ppm toluene at the working temperature of 230 degrees C with the fast response time of 0.4 s, and improved selectivity. The improvement of toluene sensing properties is not only attributed to the effective utility of hollow and porous architecture, but also due to the dramatic sensitization of the loaded Pd nanoparticles. Abstract:A new kind of SnO2 nanotubes loaded with Ag2O nanoparticles can be synthesized by using Ag@C coaxial nanocables as sacrificial templates. The composition of silver in SnO2 nanotubes can be controlled by tuning the compositions of metallic Ag in Ag@C sacrificial templates, and the morphology of tubular structures can be changed by use of nanocables with different thicknesses of carbonaceous layer. This simple strategy is expected to be extended for the fabrication of similar metal-oxide doped nanotubes using different nanocable templates. In contrast to SnO2@Ag@C nanocables as well as to other types of SnO2 reported previously, the Ag2O-doped SnO2 nanotubes exhibit excellent gas sensing behaviors. The dynamic transients of the sensors demonstrated both their ultra-fast response (1-2 s) and ultra-fast recovery (2-4 s) towards ethanol, and response (1-4 s) and recovery (4-5 s) towards butanone. The combination of SnO2 tubular structure and catalytic activity of Ag2O dopants gives a very attractive sensing behavior for applications as real-time monitoring gas sensors with ultra-fast responding and recovering speed.

Abstract:Metal oxide semiconductors with porous or hollow heterostructures can significantly improve the gas sensing performance of materials by promoting the increase of free electron density and the diffusion of test gas. Firstly, ZnSn(OH)6 was synthesized by one-step hydrothermal method, then hollow Zn2SnO4/SnO2 nano-cubes with the n-n heterojunction between Zn2SnO4 and SnO2 grains was obtained by calcination in air. The Zn2SnO4/SnO2 sensor possesses good response (Ra/Rg) toward ethanol and formaldehyde compare to other volatile organic compound (VOC) gas. In detail, the Ra/Rg is 11.12 and 9.16 in 100 ppm 200 °C ethanol and formaldehyde, respectively. Moreover, the repeatability, stability and ambient humidity as well as enhancement mechanism of this sensor are systematically discussed. These results indicate that Zn2SnO4/SnO2 nano-cubes with hollow structure is a promising sensing material for VOC gas detection.

Abstract:Pd-loaded SnO2 hollow microspheres have been successfully prepared via a facile one-pot hydrothermal route and subsequent Pd-loaded treatment without involving any templates, surfactants, or capping agents. The morphological and structural characterization confirms that Pd-loaded SnO2 hollow micro spheres are hierarchically constructed of numerous well-aligned rodlike SnO2 subunits with ultrathin diameter of about 5-10 nm and monodisperse Pd particles with several nanometers in size. The time dependent investigation demonstrates that the formation of hierarchical SnO2 hollow spheres is driven by Ostwald-ripening mechanism. Furthermore, gas sensors based on pure and Pd-loaded SnO2 have been fabricated. The Pd-loaded SnO2 hollow microspheres exhibit relatively lower operating temperature, higher response and selectivity to toluene in comparison with that of pure SnO2. Besides structural merits of ultrathin nanorod-assembled hollow and porous structure, the promotion of sensing performances can also be attributed to the contribution of catalytic Pd particles.
