Abstract:A series of linear conjugated molecular wires (diphenylacetylene connected by double or triple bonds) asymmetrically substituted by various functional groups was investigated by using density functional theory combined with nonequilibrium Green's function method. The transportation behaviors of these models did not show obvious rectification, inferring that the simple asymmetric substitution of the conjugation chain was insufficient to improve the molecular rectification. We proposed that the molecular transportation can be modulated by proton transfer between the adjacent dissociable groups on the molecular wire. The theoretical calculations showed that the rectification ratio increased about six times at 1.0 V after proton transfer. This behavior was interpreted by means of transmission spectra and spatial distribution of molecular orbitals; the alignment of molecular orbitals to the Fermi level promoted by proton transfer is also responsible for the rectification.

Abstract:We studied the contact coupling effect on the asymmetric electron transport in molecular junctions by the first-principles density functional theory incorporating with the non-equilibrium Green's function method. To realize the decoupling, a rigid saturated ring is inserted into the metallic electrode and conjugated molecular bridge (linear oligo phenylene ethynylene and cyclic porphine). As a tunneling barrier, the saturated ring reduces the conductance by 2-3 orders of magnitude. However, the electronic decoupling greatly improves the asymmetric electron transport. In the case of the linear system, the favorite direction of electron transport is from the strong coupling end to the weak coupling one with a rectification ratio of 5 at 2.0 V. In addition, the rectification performance is sensitive to the molecular proportion of the molecular wire length and the tunneling barrier width. When the same barrier is applied, shortening the length of conjugated part can reduce rectification performance. The mechanism of rectification is analyzed by means of the potential drop, the spatial distribution of the molecular orbitals and the transmission spectra.

Abstract:The field of molecular electronics was initiated from 1970s, when Aviram and Ratner proposed a concept for a molecular rectifier based on a single organic molecule. The molecular rectification has received great progress in the latest 30 years, both in experimental measurement and theoretical simulation. In this paper, we review the recent investigation on molecular rectification, both of molecular structures and rectification mechanisms. Several rectification mechanisms have been summarized, such as D-sigma-A, D-pi-A and D-A types, rectification induced by conformation reverse and interface. The negative differential resistance is also addressed, which is induced by charging, conformational flexibility, intermolecular charge transfer, molecular double dot, and the polaron mechanism. Finally, the problems and challenges in the study of molecular rectification are proposed.

Abstract:Instead of asymmetric Molecular substitution, we investigate the molecular rectification originating from asymmetrical electrode-molecule contacts using density functional theory combined with the nonequilibrium Green's function method. In the porphyrin-based molecular junction, we employ an additional thiol group on the left side to enhance the electronic coupling. The transportation of these contact-asymmetrical junctions shows obvious rectification, implying that the asymmetrical interface modification is feasible in the design of molecular diodes. The theoretical calculations show that the rectification ratio is about 2.6 in the large bias range from 0.6 to 1.2 V. We give an interpretation using the alignment of the molecular orbital levels to the biased electrodes in the metal-molecule-metal junction. This highlights the fact that contact asymmetry is a significant factor to be considered when evaluating nanoelectrical junctions incorporating single molecules.
Electrochemically controlled rectification in symmetric single-molecule junctions.

Abstract:Single-molecule electrochemical science has advanced over the past decades and now extends well beyond molecular imaging, to molecular electronics functions such as rectification and amplification. Rectification is conceptually the simplest but has involved mostly challenging chemical synthesis of asymmetric molecular structures or asymmetric materials and geometry of the two enclosing electrodes. Here we propose an experimental and theoretical strategy for building and tuning in situ (in operando) rectification in two symmetric molecular structures in electrochemical environment. The molecules were designed to conduct electronically via either their lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO; electron transfer) or highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO; "hole transfer"). We used a bipotentiostat to control separately the electrochemical potential of the tip and substrate electrodes of an electrochemical scanning tunneling microscope (EC-STM), which leads to independent energy alignment of the STM tip, the molecule, and the STM substrate. By creating an asymmetric energy alignment, we observed single-molecule rectification of each molecule within a voltage range of ±0.5 V. By varying both the dominating charge transporting LUMO or HOMO energy and the electrolyte concentration, we achieved tuning of the polarity as well as the amplitude of the rectification. We have extended an earlier proposed theory that predicts electrolyte-controlled rectification to rationalize all the observed in situ rectification features and found excellent agreement between theory and experiments. Our study thus offers a way toward building controllable single-molecule rectifying devices without involving asymmetric molecular structures.

Abstract:To understand the barrier effect on the asymmetric electron transport, we have employed a series of hybrid molecular junctions composed of conjugated and saturated hydrocarbon chains. The length of molecular wire is fixed, while the ratio of conjugated and saturated chains varies. In each model, the current–voltage characteristics have been studied using the first-principles density functional theory in conjunction with the non-equilibrium Green’s function method. We found that the rectification performance is correlated to the barrier length. The mechanism of this phenomenon is related to the asymmetric coupling between the conjugated moiety and the metallic electrode.

Abstract:Biphenyl, as the elementary unit of organic functional materials, has been widely used in electronic and optoelectronic devices. However, over decades little has been fundamentally understood regarding how the intramolecular conformation of biphenyl dynamically affects its transport properties at the single-molecule level. Here, we establish the stereoelectronic effect of biphenyl on its electrical conductance based on the platform of graphene-molecule single-molecule junctions, where a specifically designed hexaphenyl aromatic chain molecule is covalently sandwiched between nanogapped graphene point contacts to create stable single-molecule junctions. Both theoretical and temperature-dependent experimental results consistently demonstrate that phenyl twisting in the aromatic chain molecule produces different microstates with different degrees of conjugation, thus leading to stochastic switching between high- and low-conductance states. These investigations offer new molecular design insights into building functional single-molecule electrical devices.

Abstract:Theoretical investigations of a series of asymmetrically substituted conducting molecular wires [oligo(phenylene ethynylene)s] have been carried out using density functional theory and nonequilibrium Green's function formalism. To get the molecular rectification, the electron-donating group (-NH2) and the electron-withdrawing group (-NO2) are placed on the different positions of the molecular wire. The dependences of spatial distribution and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy level on the applied voltage have been found playing dominating but opposite roles in controlling the rectification behavior. In the tested bias range, since the shift LUMO energy level is more important, the electrons transfer more easily from donor to acceptor through the molecular junction in general. Abstract:The concept of single molecule rectifiers proposed in a theoretical work by Aviram and Ratner in 1974 was the starting point of the now vibrant field of molecular electronics. In the meantime, a built-in asymmetry in the conductance of molecular junctions has been reported at the experimental level. In this contribution, we present a theoretical comparison of three different types of unimolecular rectifiers: i) systems where the donor- and acceptor-part of the molecules are taken from charge-transfer salt components; ii) zwitterionic systems; and iii) Tour wires with nitro substituents. We conduct an analysis of the rectification mechanism in these three different types of asymmetric molecules on the basis of parameterized quantum-chemical models as well as with a full non-equilibrium Greens function / density functional theory (NEGF-DFT) treatment of the current/voltage characteristics of the respective metal/molecule/metal junctions. We put a particular emphasis on the prediction of rectification ratios (RR), which are crucial for the assessment of the technological usefulness of single molecule junctions as diodes. We also compare our results with values reported in the literature for other types of molecular rectification, where the essential asymmetry is not induced by the structure of the molecule alone but either by a difference in the electronic coupling of the molecule to the two electrodes or by attaching alkyl chains of different lengths to the central molecular moiety.

Abstract:We study the electron transport of thiolated benzene and borazine using ab initio method Transiesta through 3D atomic metal-molecule-metal structures. The calculation is based on well-established density functional theory (DFT) and nonequilibrium Green's functions (NEGF). DFT with norm conserving nonlocal pseudopotentials is used to define the atomic core and NEGF are used to calculate the charge distribution where the contributions of scattering sates and bound states to charge density are naturally accounted. The transmission functions and I-V characteristics are presented. Simulation results show that the conductance through benzene is about four times larger than through borazine. Negative differential resistance behavior is observed with borazine while saturation feature appears with benzene.

Abstract:In aromatic systems with large π-conjugated structures, armchair and zigzag configurations can affect each material’s electronic properties, determining their performance and generating certain quantum effects. Here, we explore the intrinsic effect of armchair and zigzag pathways on charge transport through single hexabenzocoronene molecules. Theoretical calculations and systematic experimental results from static carbon-based single-molecule junctions and dynamic scanning tunneling microscope break junctions show that charge carriers are preferentially transported along the hexabenzocoronene armchair pathway, and thus, the corresponding current through this pathway is approximately one order of magnitude higher than that through the zigzag pathway. In addition, the molecule with the zigzag pathway has a smaller energy gap. In combination with its lower off-state conductance, it shows a better field-effect performance because of its higher on-off ratio in electrical measurements. This study on charge transport pathways offers a useful perspective for understanding the electronic properties of π-conjugated systems and realizing high-performance molecular nanocircuits toward practical applications.

Abstract:We present a theoretical study of electron transport in tailored zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) with triangular structure using density functional theory together with the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism. We find significant rectification with a favorite electron transfer direction from the vertex to the right edge. The triangular ZGNR connecting to the electrode with one thiol group at each terminal shows an average rectification ratio of 8.4 over the bias range from -1.0 to 1.0 V. This asymmetric electron transport property originates from nearly zero band gap of triangular ZGNR under negative bias, whereas a band gap opens under positive bias. When the molecule is connected to the electrode by multithiol groups, the current is enhanced due to strong interfacial coupling; however, the rectification ratio decreases. The simulation results indicate that the unique electronic states of triangular ZGNR are responsible for rectification, rather than the asymmetric anchoring groups.

Abstract:Molecular rectification is a particularly attractive phenomenon to examine in studying structure-property relationships in charge transport across molecular junctions, since the tunneling currents across the same molecular junction are measured, with only a change in the sign of the bias, with the same electrodes, molecule(s), and contacts. This type of experiment minimizes the complexities arising from measurements of current densities at one polarity using replicate junctions. This paper describes a new organic molecular rectifier: a junction having the structure Ag(TS)/S(CH2)11-4-methyl-2,2'-bipyridyl//Ga2O3/EGaIn (Ag(TS): template-stripped silver substrate; EGaIn: eutectic gallium-indium alloy) which shows reproducible rectification with a mean r(+) = |J(+1.0 V)|/|J(-1.0 V)| = 85 ± 2. This system is important because rectification occurs at a polarity opposite to that of the analogous but much more extensively studied systems based on ferrocene. It establishes (again) that rectification is due to the SAM, and not to redox reactions involving the Ga2O3 film, and confirms that rectification is not related to the polarity in the junction. Comparisons among SAM-based junctions incorporating the Ga2O3/EGaIn top electrode and a variety of heterocyclic terminal groups indicate that the metal-free bipyridyl group, not other features of the junction, is responsible for the rectification. The paper also describes a structural and mechanistic hypothesis that suggests a partial rationalization of values of rectification available in the literature.

Abstract:Based on the ab initio calculation, a method of one-dimension transmission combined with three-dimension correction approximation (OTCTCA) is developed to investigate electron-transport properties of molecular junctions. The method considers that the functional molecule provides a spatial distribution of effective potential field for the electronic transport. The electrons are injected from one electrode by bias voltage, then transmit through the potential field around the functional molecule, at last are poured into the other electrode with a specific transmission probability which is calculated from one-dimension Schrodinger equation combined with three-dimension correction. The electron-transport properties of alkane diamines and 4, 4'-bipyridine molecular junctions are studied by applying OTCTCA method. The numerical results show that the conductance obviously exponentially decays with the increase of molecular length. When stretching molecular junctions, steps with a certain width are presented in conductance traces. Especially, in stretching process of 4, 4'-bipyridine molecular junction, if the terminal N atom is broken from flat part of electrode tip and exactly there is a surface Au atom on the tip nearby the N atom, the molecule generally turns to absorb on the surface Au atom, which further results in another lower conductance step in the traces as the experimental probing.

Abstract:We study the current through conjugated aromatic molecular transistors modulated by a transverse field. The selfconsistent calculation is realized with density function theory through the standard quantum chemistry software Gaussian03 and the non-equilibrium Green’s function formalism. The calculated �� − �� curves controlled by the transverse field present the characteristics of different organic molecular transistors, the transverse field effect of which is improved by the substitutions of nitrogen atoms or fluorine atoms. On the other hand, the asymmetry of molecular configurations to the axis connecting two sulfur atoms is in favor of realizing the transverse field modulation. Suitably designed conjugated aromatic molecular transistors possess different �� − �� characteristics, some of them are similar to those of metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFET). Some of the calculated molecular devices may work as elements in graphene electronics. Our results present the richness and flexibility of molecular transistors, which describe the colorful prospect of next generation devices.

Abstract:We calculate a current rectification by molecules containing a conjugated molecular group sandwiched between two saturated (insulating) molecular groups of different length (molecular quantum dot) using an ab-initio non-equilibrium Green's function method. In particular, we study S-(CH2)m-C10H6-(CH2)n-S dithiol with Naphthalene as a conjugated central group. The rectification current ratio ~35 has been observed at m = 2 and n = 10, due to resonant tunneling through the molecular orbital (MO) closest to the electrode Fermi level (lowest unoccupied MO in the present case). The rectification is limited by interference of other conducting orbitals, but can be improved by e.g. adding an electron withdrawing group to the naphthalene.

Abstract:We study current rectification effect in an asymmetric molecule HOOC-C$_6$H$_4$-(CH$_2$)$_n$ sandwiched between two Aluminum electrodes using an {\sl ab initio} nonequilibrium Green function method. The conductance of the system decreases exponentially with the increasing number $n$ of CH$_2$. The phenomenon of current rectification is observed such that a very small current appears at negative bias and a sharp negative differential resistance at a critical positive bias when $n\ge 2$. The rectification effect arises from the asymmetric structure of the molecule and the molecule-electrode couplings. A significant rectification ratio of $\sim$38 can be achieved when $n=5$.
