Abstract:The synergistic effects derived from optimizing the chemical and structural features of electrocatalysts permit them to attain remarkable activity and stability. Herein, 1D/2D cobalt‐based nanohybrid (CoNH) electrodes are developed; the structural design consists of Co3O4 electrospun nanoribbons (NRs) deposited onto a carbon fiber paper substrate where Co3O4 nanosheets are subsequently grown via an electrodeposition step and UV/ozone treatment. The content of noncovalently functionalized carbon nanotubes within the Co3O4 NRs is first tuned to enhance their charge transfer properties and mechanical stability. The electrocatalytic activity of the electrodes is further improved by a phosphorus modification of the 1D NRs, resulting in the formation of NaCoPO4. The optimized 1D/2D CoNH electrode, i.e., ED‐0.09 wt% fCNTs/P‐CoNHs, displays a similar performance to that of platinum in 0.25 m Na2S/0.35 m Na2SO3 (Tafel slope ≈102 mV dec−1 for the former and ≈96 mV dec−1 for the latter) and outstanding stability for up to 48 h. The versatility and high activity of this electrode is also demonstrated according to tests in a conventional water splitting system (cell voltage 1.55V, to produce 10 mA cm−2) and a solar‐driven electrolyzer (1 m KOH).

Abstract:Self-assembled molecular iron and cobalt catalysts (MP4N2, M = Fe, Co) bearing a multihydroxy-functionalized tetraphosphine ligand electrocatalyze H2 generation from neutral water on a mercury electrode at −1.03 and −0.50 V vs. NHE, respectively. Complex CoP4N2 displays extremely low overpotential (Eonset = 80 mV) while maintaining high activity and good stability. Bulk electrolysis of CoP4N2 in a neutral phosphate buffer solution at −1.0 V vs. NHE produced 9.24 × 104 mol H2 per mol cat. over 20 h, with a Faradaic efficiency close to 100% and without apparent deactivation.

Abstract:Electrochemical water splitting has become a potential pathway for sustainable hydrogen production, where high-efficiency low-cost catalysts are highly desirable. MoS2 is a promising candidate to substitute effective but expensive Pt-based catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction. In this work, the computer simulation results reveal that alloying with Co and compositing with graphene could significantly improve the electrocatalytic performance of MoS2 thanks to the activation of MoS2 inert surfaces and enhanced electron transport. Based on this finding, we designed and synthesized a catalyst of (CoMo)S-2/graphene, which exhibits excellent performance with low onset potential (28 mV), overpotential (100 mV) for driving a current density of 10 mA cm(-2), and Tafel slope (60.8 mV dec(-1)), superior to most of MoS2-based electrocatalysts reported in open literatures. This study supplies important information for fundamental understanding of high-efficiency non-noble electrocatalysts toward applications in energy-conversion devices.
Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution in Acidic Water with Molecular Cobalt Tetraazamacrocycles

Abstract:A series of water-soluble molecular cobalt complexes of tetraazamacrocyclic ligands are reported for the electrocatalytic production of H(2) from pH 2.2 aqueous solutions. The comparative data reported for this family of complexes shed light on their relative efficiencies for hydrogen evolution in water. Rotating disk electrode voltammetry data are presented for each of the complexes discussed, as are data concerning their respective pH-dependent electrocatalytic activity. In particular, two diimine-dioxime complexes were identified as exhibiting catalytic onset at comparatively low overpotentials relative to other reported homogeneous cobalt and nickel electrocatalysts in aqueous solution. These complexes are stable at pH 2.2 and produce hydrogen with high Faradaic efficiency in bulk electrolysis experiments over time intervals ranging from 2 to 24 h.

Abstract:Under the gravity of future socio-economic development, the viability of water electrolysis still hinges on the accessibility of stable earth-abundant electrocatalysts and net energy efficiency. This work emphasizes the design and synthesis of two newly developed cobalt(II) complexes, [Co(HL)2(NCS)2] (Comono) and [Co2(L)3(CH3OH)]ClO4 (Codi), with a (N,O)-donor ligand, HL (2-methoxy-6-(((2-methoxyphenyl)imino)methyl)phenol). The study delves into understanding their structural, morphological, magnetic, and charge transport characteristics. Moreover, the study explores the potential of these complexes in catalyzing hydrogen production through heterogeneous electrocatalysis. The X-ray crystal structure of Comono reveals the octahedral geometry of the Co(II) ion, adopting two HL units and two NCS- units. The Codi complex exhibits a doubly-phenoxo-O-bridged (μ1,1) dinuclear complex, forming a typical octahedral geometry for both the Co(II) centres in coupling with three units of L-. Temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements showed that all of the Co(II) ion in Comono shows a typical paramagnetic behaviour for high spin octahedral Co(II) ions while the Co(II) centres in Codi are coupled with doubly-phenoxo-bridges bearing weak ferromagnetic characteristics at low temperature. Electron transport properties of the Co(II) complex-mediated Schottky device address the superior carrier mobility (μ) for Codi (9.21 × 10-5) over Comono (2.02 × 10-5 m2 v-1 s-1) with respective transit times of 1.70 × 10-9 and 7.77 × 10-9 s. Additionally, electron impedance spectral analysis supports the lower electrical transport resistance of Codi relative to Comono. The heterogeneous electrocatalytic HER activity of Codi and Comono in 0.1 M KOH shows excellent electrocatalytic efficiency in terms of the various electrochemical parameters. Constant potential electrolysis, multi-cycle CVs, and post-HER analysis reveal the pre-catalytic nature of the complexes, which in turn delivers Co3O4 nanoparticles as the active catalysts for efficient hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:Water electrolysis is the simplest way to produce hydrogen, as a clean renewable fuel. However, the high overpotential and slow kinetics hamper its applicability. Designing efficient and stable electrocatalysts for water oxidation (WO), which is the first and limiting step of the water splitting process, can overcome this limitation. However, the development of such catalysts based on non-precious metal ions is still challenging. Herein we describe a bio-inspired Co( III )-based complex i.e. , a stable and efficient molecular electrocatalyst for WO, constructed from a peptidomimetic oligomer called peptoid – N -substituted glycine oligomer – bearing two binding ligands, terpyridine and bipyridine, and one ethanolic group as a proton shuttler. Upon binding of a cobalt ion, this peptoid forms an intramolecular Co( III ) complex, that acts as an efficient electrocatalyst for homogeneous WO in aqueous phosphate buffer at pH 7 with a high faradaic efficiency of up to 92% at an overpotential of about 430 mV, which is the lowest reported for Co-based homogeneous WO electrocatalysts to date. We demonstrated the high stability of the complex during electrocatalytic WO and that the ethanolic side chain plays a key role in the stability and activity of the complex and also in facilitating water binding, thus mimicking an enzymatic second coordination sphere.

Synergistic Interfacial and Doping Engineering of Heterostructured NiCo(OH)x-CoyW as an Efficient Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Electrocatalyst

Abstract:Abstract To achieve high efficiency of water electrolysis to produce hydrogen (H 2 ), developing non-noble metal-based catalysts with considerable performance have been considered as a crucial strategy, which is correlated with both the interphase properties and multi-metal synergistic effects. Herein, as a proof of concept, a delicate NiCo(OH) x -Co y W catalyst with a bush-like heterostructure was realized via gas-template-assisted electrodeposition, followed by an electrochemical etching-growth process, which ensured a high active area and fast gas release kinetics for a superior hydrogen evolution reaction, with an overpotential of 21 and 139 mV at 10 and 500 mA cm −2 , respectively. Physical and electrochemical analyses demonstrated that the synergistic effect of the NiCo(OH) x /Co y W heterogeneous interface resulted in favorable electron redistribution and faster electron transfer efficiency. The amorphous NiCo(OH) x strengthened the water dissociation step, and metal phase of CoW provided sufficient sites for moderate H immediate adsorption/H 2 desorption. In addition, NiCo(OH) x -Co y W exhibited desirable urea oxidation reaction activity for matching H 2 generation with a low voltage of 1.51 V at 50 mA cm −2 . More importantly, the synthesis and testing of the NiCo(OH) x -Co y W catalyst in this study were all solar-powered, suggesting a promising environmentally friendly process for practical applications.

Abstract:Novel cobalt disulfide on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CoS2/MWCNTs) was synthesized via a facile one-step hydrothermal method in the presence of cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide. The physical properties of as-prepared materials were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrum, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectrum, and scanning electron microscopy techniques. Physical characterizations revealed that cattierite CoS2 nanospheres dispersed on the surface of MWCNTs uniformly. In addition, electrochemical performances of as-prepared materials for hydrogen evolution reaction were investigated by polarization curves, Tafel plots, and electrochemical impedance spectrum in 0.50 M H2SO4 electrolyte. It was demonstrated that MWCNT-based electrode exhibited almost no current response while CoS2/MWCNT nanocomposite-based electrode exhibited better electrochemical performances than pure CoS2-based electrode, including lower potential of − 257 mV for 10 mA cm−2 and smaller Tafel slope of 83 mV dec−1. Furthermore, CoS2/MWCNT nanocomposite retained its high activity even after 1000 cycles of cyclic voltammetry scans, demonstrating superior stability under acidic condition. The enhanced electrocatalytic activity of CoS2/MWCNT nanocomposite-based electrode was ascribed to more exposed sulfur edges of CoS2, larger accessible surface area, and higher conductivity derived from MWCNTs. The results suggested that CoS2/MWCNT nanocomposite had a potential application to hydrogen evolution reaction.

Abstract:The electroreduction of water for sustainable hydrogen production is a critical component of several developing clean-energy technologies, such as water splitting and fuel cells. However, finding a cheap and efficient alternative catalyst to replace currently used platinum-based catalysts is still a prerequisite for the commercialization of these technologies. Here we report a robust and highly active catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction that is constructed by in situ growth of molybdenum disulfide on the surface of cobalt diselenide. In acidic media, the molybdenum disulfide/cobalt diselenide catalyst exhibits fast hydrogen evolution kinetics with onset potential of −11 mV and Tafel slope of 36 mV per decade, which is the best among the non-noble metal hydrogen evolution catalysts and even approaches to the commercial platinum/carbon catalyst. The high hydrogen evolution activity of molybdenum disulfide/cobalt diselenide hybrid is likely due to the electrocatalytic synergistic effects between hydrogen evolution-active molybdenum disulfide and cobalt diselenide materials and the much increased catalytic sites.

Abstract:Producing hydrogen by electrolyzing water has received increased attention. Nevertheless, a major challenge remains in the search for high performance hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts. In this work, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) capped by TpPa covalent organic framework (TpPa-COF) react with cobalt nitrate hexahydrate (Co(NO 3 ) 2 ·6H 2 O) to form a novel ternary one-body complex (MWCNTs@TpPa-COF@Co/CoO). Wherein, TpPa-COF is constructed from 2,4,6-Triformylphloroglucinol (Tp) and p -phenylenediamine (Pa) as structural units. This COF is relatively inexpensive, provides more coordination sites for metal loading, and is particularly stable in acidic and basic media. The results show that the composite material has high electrocatalytic HER activity in a potassium hydroxide (KOH) condition with an overpotential value of 28.8 mV and a Tafel slope of 69.07 mV dec −1 at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Meanwhile, the MWCNTs@TpPa-COF@Co/CoO showed excellent stability after 2000 cycles in alkaline media. The characterization demonstrated that the material provided low resistance during the charge transfer process, which resulted in improved electrochemical performance. In addition, the COF loaded with cobalt nanoparticles provided more active sites for the reaction. Thus, the synthesized MWCNTs@TpPa-COF@Co/CoO emerges turns out to be a Pt-free, stable and efficient HER electrocatalyst, holding significant promise for practical applications.

Abstract:Alkaline water electrolysis holds promise for large-scale hydrogen production, yet it encounters challenges like high voltage and limited stability at higher current densities, primarily due to inefficient electron transport kinetics. Herein, a novel cobalt-based metallic heterostructure (Co3Mo3N/Co4N/Co) is designed for excellent water electrolysis. In operando Raman experiments reveal that the formation of the Co3Mo3N/Co4N heterointerface boosts the free water adsorption and dissociation, increasing the available protons for subsequent hydrogen production. Furthermore, the altered electronic structure of the Co3Mo3N/Co4N heterointerface optimizes ΔGH of the nitrogen atoms at the interface. This synergistic effect between interfacial nitrogen atoms and metal phase cobalt creates highly efficient active sites for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), thereby enhancing the overall HER performance. Additionally, the heterostructure exhibits a rapid OH- adsorption rate, coupled with great adsorption strength, leading to improved oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance. Crucially, the metallic heterojunction accelerates electron transport, expediting the afore-mentioned reaction steps and enhancing water splitting efficiency. The Co3Mo3N/Co4N/Co electrocatalyst in the water electrolyzer delivers excellent performance, with a low 1.58 V cell voltage at 10 mA cm-2, and maintains 100% retention over 100 hours at 200 mA cm-2, surpassing the Pt/C || RuO2 electrolyzer.

Abstract:Replacing commercial noble metal catalysts with earth-abundant metal catalysts for hydrogen production is an important research direction for electrolytic water. Improving the catalytic performance of non-noble metals while maintaining stability is a key challenge for alkaline hydrogen evolution. Herein, we combined alkali etching and surface phosphating to regulate the properties of Cr-doped CoMoO4 material, forming a surface structure in which amorphous cobalt phosphate and Cr-doped Co(Mo)Ox coexist. As expected, the as-prepared catalytic material exhibits remarkable hydrogen evolution activity in 1.0 M KOH, only requiring a low overpotential of 52.7 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm–2, and can maintain this current density for 24 h. The characterization and analysis of the catalyst before and after the stability test reveal that the Cr doping and surface engineering (i.e., alkali etching and phosphating) synergistically increase the adsorption and dissociation of water, optimize the desorption of H, and ultimately accelerate hydrogen evolution. Abstract:Green hydrogen production from water is one attractive route to non-fossil fuel and a potential source of clean energy. Hydrogen is not only a zero-carbon energy source but can also be utilized as an efficient storage of electrical energy generated through various other sources, such as wind and solar. Cost-effective and environmentally benign direct hydrogen production through neutral water (∼pH 7) reduction is particularly challenging due to the low concentration of protons. There is currently a major need for easy-to-prepare, robust, as well as active electrode materials. Herein we report three new molecular electrodes that were prepared by anchoring commercially available, and environmentally benign cobalt-containing electrocatalysts with three different ligand frameworks (porphyrin, phthalocyanine, and corrin) on a structurally modified graphite foil surface. Under the studied reaction conditions (over 7 h at 22°C), the electrode with Co-porphyrin is the most efficient for the water reduction with starting ∼740 mV onset potential (OP) (vs. RHE, current density 2.5 mA/cm 2 ) and a Tafel slope (TS) of 103 mV/dec. It is followed by the molecular electrodes having Co-phthalocyanine [825 mV (OP), 138 mV/dec (TS)] and Vitamin-B 12 (Co-corrin moiety) [830 mV (OP), 194 mv/dec (TS)]. A clear time-dependent improvement (>200 mV over 3 h) in the H 2 production overpotential with the Co-porphyrin-containing cathode was observed. This is attributed to the activation due to water coordination to the Co-center. A long-term chronopotentiometric stability test shows a steady production of hydrogen from all three cathode surfaces throughout seven hours, confirmed using an H 2 needle sensor. At a current density of 10 mA/cm 2 , the Co-porphyrin-containing electrode showed a TOF value of 0.45 s −1 at 870 mV vs. RHE, whereas the Co-phthalocyanine and Vitamin-B 12 -containing electrodes showed 0.37 and 0.4 s −1 at 1.22 V and 1.15 V (vs. RHE), respectively.

Abstract:This study reports the synthesis, characterization, and electrocatalytic fate of an oxo‐acetato‐bridged tricobalt(III) complex for efficient hydrogen production in an alkaline medium. This study presents the synthesis and electrocatalytic performance of the cobalt(III) complex [Co3(μ1,1,1‐O)(μ1,3‐CH3CO2)(L)3]2(DMF)3 (Cotri), featuring a double deprotonated (N,O)‐donor ligand (L2‐), where the protonated form of it (H2L) is 2,2′‐(hydrazine‐1,2‐diylidenebis(ethan‐1‐yl‐1‐ylidene))diphenol. The X‐ray structure reveals a trinuclear cobalt cluster formed with three cobalt(III) centers interlinking through oxido (μ1,1,1‐O) and acetato (μ1,3‐O2CCH3) bridges in coupling with bis‐congregator‐type chelating ligands. Cotri adopts cobalt centers of octahedral and trigonal bipyramidal coordination geometries and bears a dominant Co(2)...H(DMF) agostic interactions appraised by lattice dimethyl formamide (DMF) molecules. Further, Cotri shows promising heterogeneous electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity in 1 M KOH, with an overpotential of 441 mV to achieve 10 mA/cm2 current density. Tafel slope analysis suggests the Volmer–Heyrovsky step as the rate‐determining step. The number of active sites and TOF for Cotri were estimated at 4.010 × 10−8 mol and 0.2467 s−1, respectively, ensuring its excellent hydrogen generation activity. Stability assessments through controlled potential electrolysis (CPE) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) for multiple cycles addressed the transformation of Cotri to Co2O3 nanoparticles, which turned out to be a more active Co2O3 electrocatalyst. The morphology and particle size of the in situ developed Co2O3 active catalyst under the electrochemical conditions attributes to the superior hydrogen evolution activity.

Cobalt Single‐Atom Reverse Hydrogen Spillover for Efficient Electrochemical Water Dissociation and Dechlorination

Abstract:AbstractEfficient water dissociation to atomic hydrogen (H*) with restrained recombination of H* is crucial for improving the H* utilization for electrochemical dechlorination, but is currently limited by the lack of feasible electrodes. Herein, we developed a monolithic single‐atom electrode with Co single atoms anchored on the inherent oxide layer of titanium foam (Co1−TiOx/Ti), which can efficiently dissociate water into H* and simultaneously inhibit the recombination of H*, by taking advantage of the single‐atom reverse hydrogen spillover effect. Experimental and theoretical calculations demonstrated that H* could be rapidly generated on the oxide layer of titanium foam, and then overflowed to the adjacent Co single atom for the reductive dechlorination. Using chloramphenicol as a proof‐of‐concept verification, the resulting Co1−TiOx/Ti monolithic electrode exhibited an unprecedented performance with almost 100 % dechlorination at −1.0 V, far superior to that of traditional indirect reduction‐driven commercial Pd/C (52 %) and direct reduction‐driven Co1−N−C (44 %). Moreover, its dechlorination rate constant of 1.64 h−1 was 4.3 and 8.6 times more active than those of Pd/C (0.38 h−1) and Co1−N−C (0.19 h−1), respectively. Our research sheds light on the rational design of hydrogen spillover‐related electrocatalysts to simultaneously improve the H* generation, transfer, and utilization for environmental and energy applications.
Co1-xS/N-doped graphene foam composite as efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for the evolution reaction of oxygen and hydrogen

Abstract:As an environment-friendly and sustainable energy conversion technology, water electrolysis is strongly dependent on the efficiency and cost of the electrocatalysts. Herein, nanosheet-constructed cobalt sulfide microspheres incorporated with nitrogen-doped graphene foam (Co1-xS/NGF), a highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting, was obtained by controlled two-step synthesis. The nitrogen-doped graphene foam (NGF) underlying the Co1-xS microspheres provides an electrically conducting support for the catalysts, contributes small size and homogeneous distribution of the in-situ grown Co1-xS microspheres, and affords abundant active sites for fast and sufficient transport of mass and electrons and, therefore, highly enhanced catalytic activity through the strong synergistic effect of Co1-xS microspheres and the NGF substrate. In 1 M KOH, the Co1-xS/NGF hybrid catalyst exhibits remarkable OER and HER catalytic performance, with overpotentials of 233.6 mV for the OER and 163.7 mV for the HER at 10 mA cm−2, and the corresponding Tafel slopes of 138 and 95 mV dec−1, respectively. The hybrid material of Co1-xS/NGF even exhibits a lower overpotential (η20) to reach 20 mA cm−2 towards OER than that of RuO2, and its performance matches the best cobalt sulfide bifunctional electrocatalysts reported to date. Besides, the Co1-xS/NGF is highly stable for long-term water electrolysis in the 1 M KOH. These findings support that the current Co1-xS/NGF is a competitive candidate of transition metal-based catalysts for cost-efficient and large-scale overall water electrolysis in the alkaline environment.

Abstract:It has been of interest in seeking electrocatalysts that could exercise equally high-efficient and durable hydrogen evolution upon nonselective electrolytes in both acidic and alkaline environments. Herein, we report a facile strategy to fabricate cobalt tungsten phosphides (CoxW2−xP2/C) hollow polyhedrons with tunable composition based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) template method. By the deliberate control of W doping, the synthesized catalyst with the composition of Co0.9W1.1P2/C is found to be able to achieve a current density of 10 mA·cm−2 at overpotentials of 35 and 54 mV in acidic and alkaline media, respectively. This combined electrochemical property stands atop the state-of-the-art electrocatalyst counterparts. To unveil the peculiar behavior of the structure, density functional theory (DFT) calculation was implemented and reveals that the surface W-doping facilitates the optimization of hydrogen absorption free energy (ΔGH*) as well as the thermodynamic and kinetics barriers for water dissociation, which is coupled with the hollow structure of Co-W phosphides, leading to the prominent HER catalytic performance.

Abstract:The simultaneous improvement of intrinsic activities and the number of active sites in electrocatalysts is the bottle-neck issue for H-2 production. Herein, commercial CNTs serving as conductive kernels are in situ coupled with 3D ZIF-67 derived Co/CoP core-corona clusters. Such a hierarchical bead string nanostructure not only possesses highly exposed active sites, but also favours fast electron transfer for electrocatalytic kinetics. Our material shows excellent HER (eta(10) = -151 mV) and glucose oxidation reaction (GOR) performance, showing a smaller hybrid water splitting potential of 1.42 V compared to conventional water splitting (eta(10) = 1.74 V) for H-2 production. DFT calculations indicate that the Schottky heterointerface at Co/CoP decreases the initial H2O dissociation energy barrier and possesses a thermoneutral H* adsorption free energy for the HER, as well as reducing the energy barrier for the GOR. Meanwhile, more oxidative cobalt oxyhydroxide favoured the GOR process. The present work opens a new avenue for designing Mott-Schottky multifunctional electrocatalysts for both energy-saving H-2 production and value-added products.

Abstract:Molecular hydrogen evolution catalysts (HECs) are synthetically tunable and often exhibit high activity, but they are also hampered by stability concerns and practical limitations associated with their use in the homogeneous phase. Their incorporation as integral linker units in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can remedy these shortcomings. Moreover, the extended three-dimensional structure of MOFs gives rise to high catalyst loadings per geometric surface area. Herein, we report a new MOF that exclusively consists of cobaloximes, a widely studied HEC, that act as metallo-linkers between hexanuclear zirconium clusters. When grown on conducting substrates and under applied reductive potential, the cobaloxime linkers promote electron transport through the film as well as function as molecular HECs. The obtained turnover numbers are orders of magnitude higher than those of any other comparable cobaloxime system, and the molecular integrity of the cobaloxime catalysts is maintained for at least 18 h of electrocatalysis. Being one of the very few hydrogen evolving electrocatalytic MOFs based on a redox-active metallo-linker, this work explores uncharted terrain for greater catalyst pathways.
