Abstract:Eight new dimethylgallium complexes bearing 4-alkyl-2,6-bis(aryliminomethylene)-phenol ligands of type Me2GaL [L=4-methyl-2,6-bis-(phenyliminomethylene)-phenolato (3); L=4-methyl-2,6-bis-(p-methylphenyliminomethylene)-phenolato (4); L=4-methyl-2,6-bis-(1-naphthyliminomethylene)-phenolato (5); L=4-methyl-2,6-bis-(2-chlorophenyliminomethylene)-phenolato (6); 4-tert-butyl-2,6-bis-(phenyliminomethylene)-phenolato (7); L=4-tert-butyl-2,6-bis-(p-methylphenyliminomethylene)-phenolato (8); L=4-tert-butyl-2,6-bis-(1-naphthyliminomethylene)-phenolato (9); and L=4-tert-butyl-2,6-bis-(2-chlorophenyliminomethylene)-phenolato] (3) have been synthesized by the reaction of trimethylgallium with appropriate phenol. The complexes obtained have been characterized by elemental analysis, 1H NMR, IR and mass spectroscopy, respectively. The solid-state structures of dimethyl[4-methyl-2,6-bis-(p-methylphenyliminomethylene)-phenolato]gallium (4) have been determined by X-ray single crystal analysis. In the structure, Ga atom is coordinated by one nitrogen atom and the other nitrogen atom remains constant. The distorted tetrahedron geometry around gallium is presented.

Abstract:Reduction of the dichloro gallium(III) alpha-diimine complex [(L-ipr)center dot-GaCl2] (1, L-ipr = [(2,6-iPr(2)C(6)H(3)) NC(Me)](2)) by different equivalents of sodium metal afforded the gallium complexes [(L-ipr)Ga-2-(III)(mu(2)-Cl)(2)Na(THF)(4)] (2) and [(Na(THF)(6))(+)center dot((L-ipr)Ga2--Ga(L-ipr)(2-))(center dot-)] (3). Interestingly, in complex 2 a Na+Cl- ion pair is incorporated, while compound 3 is an anionic digallium complex. Moreover, a cationic gallium complex with a tetrachlorogallium(III) counter anion, [(LGaCl2)(+)center dot(GaCl4)(-)] (4), was accessed from the reaction of GaCl3 with 0.5 equiv. of ligand L-ipr. In contrast, the reaction of GaCl3 with the doubly reduced anion (Na2L2-) of the smaller a-diimine ligands L-Me ([(2,6-Me2C6H3) NC(Me)] 2) or L-Et ([(2,6-Et2C6H3) NC(Me)](2)) yielded the Ga-Ga-bonded complexes [(L-Et)(center dot-ClGaII)-(GaCl)-Cl-II(L-Et)(center dot-)] (5) and [(L-Me)(center dot-ClGaII)-(GaCl)-Cl-II(L-Me)(center dot-)] (6). Here L is the neutral alpha-diimine ligand, L(center dot-)represents the monoanion, and L2- is the dianionic form of the ligand. The complexes were characterized by X-ray diffraction and their electronic structures were studied by DFT computations.

Abstract:Three dimethylgallium complexes of type Me2GaL [L = 2-methoxylphenylmethyleneiminophenolato (1), N-(4-N,N'-dimethylamino) phenylmethyleneiminophenolato (2), N-(2-naphthyl)methyleneiminophenolato (3)] have been synthesized by the reaction of trimethylgallium with appropriate N-arylmethyleneiminophenol. The complexes obtained have been characterized by elemental analysis, H-1, C-13{H-1} NMR, IR and mass spectroscopy, respectively. The solid structure of 2 has been determined by X-ray single crystal analysis. The gallium atom was bonded by an oxygen atom and coordinated by an imine nitrogen atom forming one five-membered ring. The stable dimmer was formed by the coordination of bridging oxygen atom of phenolate to another gallium atom. The photoluminescence of complexes 1-3 were studied. The maximum emission wavelengths of 1-3 are between 305 and 320 nm upon radiation by UV light. The electroluminescent properties of diodes using 1-3 as emitting material were measured. N-Heterocyclic imine-based bis-gallium(i) carbene analogs featuring a four-membered Ga<sub>2</sub>N<sub>2</sub> ring

Abstract:A combination of Ga(i) centers as important building blocks and scaffolds containing N-heterocyclic imines gives new insights into low-valent Ga chemistry. In this study, a mixture of (LNLi)-N-Dip (L-Dip = 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-imidazolin-2-ylidene), (BuOK)-Bu-t, and Cp*Ga (Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) in toluene afforded [(LN)-N-Dip-Ga](2) (1) via salt metathesis. X-ray structure analysis of 1 revealed a four-membered Ga2N2 ring, and DFT studies indicated the presence of a lone pair at each Ga center. In addition, compound 1 demonstrated diverse reactivities towards methyl trifluoromethanesulfonate, diphenyl disulfide, 9,10-phenanthrenequinone, and ECl2 (E = Ge or Sn).
[Study on the Structure and Photoluminescent Properties of Mono-Zn(Ⅱ) and Di-Cu(Ⅰ) Complexes Constructed from Nitrogen Heterocyclic Ring Ligand].

Abstract:The mononuclear Zn(Ⅱ) complex [Zn(2,6-PDA)(phen)H2O]·H2O (1) and binuclear Cu(Ⅰ) complex{[Cu(μ-Ⅰ)(phen)H2O]·H2O}2 (2) (2,6-H2PDA=2,6- pyridinedicarboxylic acid，phen=1,10- phenanthroline monohydrate) have been prepared with hydro-thermal synthesis method. These complexes have been characterized with single-crystal X-ray, elemental analysis, and IR spectroscopy. The fluorescence spectra of 1 and 2 are studied in solid-state and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solution. The maximum absorption peak of 1 and 2 are at 253 nm and 242 nm respectively, which are red shift to that of the phen ligand with inceased intensity. It may be assigned to the intraligand π→π* transition of the phen ligand that is modified by the Zn(Ⅱ) or Cu(Ⅰ) ions. On the basis of the coordination, the absorption of organic ligands in the ultraviolet region is increased, which is better for the energy absorption of the ligand. 1 and 2 all showed blue light emission. The emission peak of 1 and 2 have experienced a red shift (ca. 55 and 23 nm) in the solid state (λem = 407, 434, 467 nm for 1, 442, 469, 501 nm for 2) compared to in DMSO solution (λem = 361, 379, 392 nm for 1, 422, 443, 461 nm for 2). The red shift phenomenon can be attributed to the π-stacking of the aromatic rings and other intermolecular Interactions in these molecules in the solid state. Especially, the strong Cu(Ⅰ)…Cu(Ⅰ) interaction of 2 can decrease the HOMO—LUMO energy gap with the red-shifted emission wavelength.

Abstract:Binuclear complex [Cu2 (mu-I)2 (phen)2] x CH3CN(1)(phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) was synthesized under solvothermal conditions and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectrum, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that complex 1 is monoclinic, space group P2(1/n), and the cell parameters are: alpha = 10.505 A, b = 23.628 A, c = 10. 676 A, alpha = 90, beta = 91.40 degrees and gamma = 90 degrees. The authors have studied the luminescence property of 1, Complex 1 has blue-purple luminescence in solutions of DMSO with emission bands at 369, 380 and 460sh nm; and has red luminescence in the solid state at room temperature with a broad emission band at 650-678 nm. These all can be attributed to the pi* --> pi transition based on the ligand. In the solid state, the emission frequencies for complex 1 are red-shifted about 280 nm compared with their emission maximum peaks in solutions of DMSO. This red-shift of emission energy from solution to solid is likely to be caused by the intermolecular pi--pi packing interaction in the solid state which effectively decreases the energy gap. The fluorescence decay curve of complex 1 indicated that the processes of decay consists of two components, whose corresponding lifetimes are tau1 = 1.36 micros and tau2 = 5.98 micros, corresponding factors are 50.21% and 49.79% in DMSO solutions, and tau1 = 1.42 micros, tau2 = 8.85 micros, corresponding factors are 51.15% and 48.85% in the solid state.

Abstract:Three metal-organic complexes Cd(HBIDC)(phen)(2)center dot 4H(2)O (1), [Cd(BIC)(Phen)](n) (2) and {[Eu(HBIDC)(H2BIDC)(H2O)]center dot H2O}(n) H2O) 1 (3) (H3BIDC=benzimidazole-5,6-dicarboxylic acid, H2BIC=benzimidazole-6-carboxylic acid, phen=1,10-phenanthroline) have been synthesized under hydro(solvo)thermal conditions and structurally characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectrum, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. With similar reaction conditions, reactions of the same ligand with different metal cations selected from different blocks (d-block and f-block) result in different coordination modes of carboxylate groups and final frameworks of complexes 1 and 3. The decarboxylation was observed in complex 2 and resulted in the formation of BIC2- ligand. Complexes 1-3 have intense fluorescent emissions at room temperature in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) solution and in the solid-state, which indicate they are potential fluorescence materials. Syntheses, Crystal Structures and Luminescent Properties of Three New Gallium Complexes Containing Pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic Acid

Abstract:Three new gallium complexes formulated as [Ga(PDA)(2)][Ga(H2O)(PDA)(phen)]center dot 4H(2)O(1), [Ga(PDA)(2)]center dot(H2IN)center dot 2H(2)O(2) and [Ga(OH)(PDA)(H2O)](2)(3)(H(2)PDA=pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid; phen=1,10-phenanthroline; HIN=isonicotinic acid) have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. In the mixed-ligand system of complex 1, PDA(2-) and phen are connected to the central Ga3+ cation as tri- and bi-dentate ligands, respectively. In complex 2, each Ga3+ cation is six-coordinated by two PDA(2-) anions octahedrally. Complex 3 shows a binuclear structure, with the bond distance of Ga1-Ga2 being 0.30061(3) nm. The 3D supramolecular structures of the three complexes are constructed via hydrogen bonds and aromatic pi-pi packing interactions. All the three complexes exhibit intense blue emission at room temperature in the solid state, which are attributed to pi*-pi transition centered on the ligands.
Activation of CO2, CS2, and COS by Α-Diimine-stabilized Gallylenes.

Abstract:Several gallylenes [LPhGaM(THF)n] stabilized by an α-diimine ligand (LPh=[(2,6-iPr2C6H3)NC(Ph)]2 2-; M=Li, n=3, 3-Li; M=Na, n=4, 3-Na; M=K, n=1, 3-K) were prepared, which display diverse reactivities toward carbon dioxide and its sulfurized analogues. The reaction of 3 with CO2 yielded a trimeric carbonate complex [{LPhGa(CO3)2}3{μ-K9(THF)6}] (4) and a dinuclear oxo-carbonate complex [K2(THF)6][LPhGa(μ-CO3)(μ-O)GaLPh] (5) in one pot through reductive disproportionation of CO2. For CS2, two ethenetetrathiolate gallium complexes, [M2(Solv)4][LPhGa(μ-C2S4)GaLPh] (M=Na, Solv=THF, 6; M=K, Solv=DME, 7), were obtained via reductive coupling of CS2. In the case of COS, disproportionation gave a disulfide-bridged complex [K2(THF)6] [LPhGa(μ-S)2GaLPh] (8) at room temperature, but a dithiocarbonate [Na2(THF)5][LPhGa(S2CO)]2 (9) at low temperature, the latter being the first example of dithiocarbonates of p-block elements.
Molecular and electronic structures of paramagnetic gallium complexes with differently charged o-quinone ligands

Abstract:A series of new paramagnetic six-coordinate gallium complexes based on 3,6-di-tert-butyl-o-benzoquinone with N-donor ligands, such as pyridine (Py), 2,2′-dipyridyl (2,2′-dipy), and 4,4′-di-tert-butyl-2,2′-dipyridyl (But-dipy), were synthesized and structurally characterized. The molecular structures of the synthesized compounds were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The complexes with bidentate N-donor ligands have the cis arrangement of the o-quinone ligands, whereas the compound with coordinated pyridine molecules has the trans arrangement of the diolate moieties. The synthesized compounds are characterized by spin density delocalization between the differently charged redox-active ligands. Regardless of the metal coordination environment, the near-IR region of the electronic absorption spectra of all the synthesized complexes show a low-intensity charge-transfer band between the catecholate and o-semiquinolate ligands, which was confirmed by DFT calculations.

Abstract:A gallium dichloro complex (L−)GaIIICl2 (1) with an α-diimine ligand [(2,6-iPr2C6H3)NC(Me)]2 (L0 represents the neutral ligand, L− is the radical-anionic form of the ligand, and L represents its dianion L2−) was used to synthesize a series of alkali metal complexes of an N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs)-like gallium(I) species. Reduction of the precursor 1 with three equivalents of Na, Li, K or KC8, respectively, in THF gave the complexes [LGaINa(THF)3] (2), [LGaILi(THF)3] (3), [LGaI{μ2-K(THF)4}GaIL][K(THF)6] (4) and [LGaI(μ2-K){μ2-K(THF)2}GaIL] (5). In these complexes, the original radical-anionic ligand was further reduced to the dianion, whereas the GaIII ion was reduced to GaI to yield the NHCs analogue [:GaN2C2]−, which then coordinated to alkali metal ions to form the complexes 2–5. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that these complexes feature direct Ga–M bonds (M=Li, Na, and K), which have also been studied by DFT computations.
Phenylthiyl radical complexes of gallium(III), iron(III), and cobalt(III) and comparison with their phenoxyl analogues

Abstract:Three hexadentate, asymmetric pendent arm macrocycles containing a 1,4,7-triazacyclononane-1,4-diacetate backbone and a third, N-bound phenolate or thiophenolate arm have been synthesized. In [L(1)](3)(-) the third arm is 3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzyl, in [L(2)](3)(-) it is 2-mercaptobenzyl, and in [L(3)](3)(-) it is 3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-mercaptobenzyl. With trivalent metal ions these ligands form very stable neutral mononuclear complexes [M(III)L(1)] (M = Ga, Fe, Co), [M(III)L(2)] (M = Ga, Fe, Co), and [M(III)L(3)] (M = Ga, Co) where the gallium and cobalt complexes possess an S = 0 and the iron complexes an S = (5)/(2) ground state. Complexes [CoL(1)].CH(3)OH.1.5H(2)O, [CoL(3)].1.17H(2)O, [FeL(1)].H(2)O, and [FeL(2)] have been characterized by X-ray crystallography. Cyclic voltammetry shows that all three [M(III)L(1)] complexes undergo a reversible, ligand-based, one-electron oxidation generating the monocations [M(III)L(1)(*)](+) which contain a coordinated phenoxyl radical as was unambiguously established by their electronic absorption, EPR, and Mössbauer spectra. In contrast, [M(III)L(2)] complexes in CH(3)CN solution undergo an irreversible one-electron oxidation where the putative thiyl radical monocationic intermediates dimerize with S-S bond formation yielding dinuclear disulfide species [M(III)L(2)-L(2)M(III)](2+). [GaL(3)] behaves similarly despite the steric bulk of two tertiary butyl groups at the 3,5-positions of the thiophenolate, but [Co(III)L(3)] in CH(2)Cl(2) at -20 to -61 degrees C displays a reversible one-electron oxidation yielding a relatively stable monocation [Co(III)L(3)(*)](+). Its electronic spectrum displays intense transitions in the visible at 509 nm (epsilon = 2.6 x 10(3) M(-)(1) cm(-)(1)) and 670sh, 784 (1.03 x 10(3)) typical of a phenylthiyl radical. The EPR spectrum of this species at 90 K proves the thiyl radical to be coordinated to a diamagnetic cobalt(III) ion (g(iso) = 2.0226; A(iso)((59)Co) = 10.7 G).

Abstract:The reaction of trialkylgallium or indium R3M (M=In, Ga; R=Me, Et) with N,N′-ethylenebis(salicylideneimine) or 1,2-N,N′-phenylenebis(salicylideneimine) yields seven intramolecularly coordinated organogallium or organoindium complexes. Two hydroxyl protons in the ligands react with both trialkylindium and trimethylgallium, while one hydroxyl group reacts exclusively with triethylgallium. The complexes obtained have been fully characterised by elemental analysis, 1H-NMR, IR and mass spectroscopy. The structure of methyl-N,N′-bis(salicylidene)-1,2-phenylenediaminoindium (1) has been determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis. The In atom is five coordinate in the structure. Fluorescence spectroscopy has shown that the maximum emission wavelength of 1 is 499 nm upon radiation by UV light.

Abstract:By introducing tridentate Schiff base ligands, a binuclear gallium complex with mixed ligands, bis(salicylidene-o-aminophenolato)-bis(8-quinolinolato)-bis-gallium(III) [Ga-2(saph)(2)q(2)], has been synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Crystal data for C44H30Ga2N4O6 are as follows: space group, triclinic, P1; a = 11.357(3) Angstrom, b = 12.945(3) Angstrom, c = 12.947(3) Angstrom, alpha = 103.461(15)degrees, beta = 100.070(7)degrees, gamma = 96.107(18)degrees, Z = 2. This complex was identified as a dimeric complex of hexacoordinated gallium with strong intermolecular and intramolecular pi-pi stacking interactions between the pyridyl/pyridyl rings. The thermal analysis showed that Ga-2(saph)(2)q(2) can readily form a stable amorphous glass with a high glass transition temperature (T-g = 204 degreesC), which is 27 degreesC higher than that of tris(8-hydroxyquinolinolate)aluminum (Alq(3)). In addition, a high photoluminescence efficiency (phi(PL)) of 0.318 in DMF has been demonstrated, although the central gallium atom can result in heavy-atom quenching. Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on this complex displayed a turn-on voltage as low as 2.5 V and a high efficiency. Even at a low doping concentration of 1%, the doped Ga-2(saph)(2)q(2) devices with 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-tert-butyl-6-(1,1,7,7-tetramethyljulolidyl-9-enyl)-4H-pyran (DCJTB) as the dopant exhibited excellent red emission centered at 628 nm with improved durability, compared with the case of Alq(3) as the host. These distinguishing properties of Ga-2(saph)(2)q(2) make it a good candidate as a novel electron-transporting and emitting material for OLEDs.

Abstract:Tri-t-butylgallium has been reacted with the macrocycle 1,12-diaza-3,4:9,10-dibenzo-5,8-dioxocyclopentadecane which could be a potential ligand for gallium(III). A reaction product was analyzed and single crystal X-ray diffraction experiments showed that it consisted of the cyclic dimer of di-t-butylgallium-hydroxide hydrogen bonded to the macrocycle. Without a co-crystallized organic molecule di-t-butylgallium hydroxide crystallizes as a trimer. Density functional calculations have been used to predict the structures and the total energies for the monomer, dimer, trimer, and tetramer of dimethylgallium hydroxide in order to provide a basis for the understanding of oligomer population for the dimethylgallium hydroxides. Force field calculations are shown to be able to produce a similar strain energy difference for dimer, trimer, and tetramer forms of (CH3)2Ga(OH) and this method can economically be used for larger alkyl groups. The force field computations show that the trimeric di-t-butyl gallium(III) hydroxide is much more stable than the dimeric form which therefore must owe its existence to the association with the hydrogen-bonded macrocycle.

Abstract:We have developed a family of 2,7‐disubstituted 1,8‐naphthalenediol ligands to pre‐organize two metal ions to the distance of two neighboring phosphate diesters of 6‐7 Å in the DNA backbone by a rigid backbone. As complexes with divalent ions (CuII and NiII) bind to DNA, interferes DNA synthesis via PCR, and kills human cancer cells more efficiently than human stem cells of the same proliferation rate, we intended to increase the binding affinity by going from divalent to trivalent ions ‐ especially FeIII. Here, we apply GaIII as redox inactive model for FeIII and obtain for the first time a complex with trivalent ions. However, the structural characterization provides not a dinuclear GaIII complex, but a hexanuclear GaIII complex with a central {GaIII6(m‐OH)10} core, that is yet unprecedented.

Abstract:The combination of Ga(I) centers as important building blocks and scaffolds containing N-heterocyclic imines give new insights into the low-valent Ga chemistry. In this study, a mixture of L Dip NLi (L Dip = 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-imidazolin-2-ylidene), t BuOK, and Cp*Ga (Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) in toluene afforded [L Dip N-Ga] 2 (1) via salt metathesis. X-ray structure analysis of 1 revealed a square-planar Ga 2 N 2 ring, and DFT studies indicated the presence of a lone pair at each Ga center. In addition, compound 1 demonstrated diverse reactivity towards methyl trifluoromethanesulfonate, diphenyl diselenide, 9,10-phenanthrenequinone, and ECl2 (E = Ge or Sn).

Abstract:Reaction of trimethylgallium (trimethylindium) and triethylgallium (triethylindium) with N-salicylidene 2-aminopyridine or N-salicylidene 2-methoxyaniline in benzene solution yields seven intramolecular coordinated Group 13 metal Schiff-base complexes. All complexes obtained were characterized by elemental analysis, 1H-NMR, IR and mass spectrometry. The structure of dimethyl[N-salicylidene 2-aminopyridine]gallium (1) was determined by X-ray single crystal analysis. The Ga atom is four coordinate in the structure. Photoluminescent emission spectra of complexes dimethyl[N-salicylidene 2-aminopyridine]gallium (1), diethyl[N-salicylidene 2-aminopyridine]gallium (3), diethyl[N-salicylidene 2-aminopyridine]indium (4) and dimethyl[N-salicylidene 2-methoxylaniline]gallium (5) were measured. The maximum emission wavelength is between 503 and 511 nm, respectively on radiation by UV light.

Abstract:Crystals of dimethyl [4-tert-butyl-2,6-bis(1-naphthyliminomethylene)phenolato]gallium (1) are monoclinic, space group P21/c with a = 14.797(3)Å, b = 10.651(2)Å, c = 20.260(4)Å, β = 93.55(1)°, V = 3187.1(11)Å3, Z = 4. The structure was solved by direct methods and refined to a final R value of 0.0412 of 4150 reflections (I > 2σ(I)). The gallium atom was bonded by one oxygen atom and coordinated by one imine nitrogen atom, forming one six-member ring.

Abstract:Canadian Journal of Chemistry, Ahead of Print. Five pyrazagalloles bearing H and CH3 substituents on the gallium atom and/or in the pyrazole ring have been calculated. The theoretical results have been compared with literature results concerning geometries from the Cambridge Data Base with very good agreement. 1H and 13C NMR results from the literature, scarce, and unpublished from our group are also well reproduced from GIAO calculations. The most important conclusion from this work is the assignment to a pz3Ga3 trimer as the isomer present in the 1H NMR spectra of dimeric pyrazagalloles. A mechanism connecting dimers and trimers has been found and the transition states identified.
