Abstract:A proton-conductive organic/inorganic hybrid complex {[Cu(H2O)8][H(H2O)3](HINO)4(PW12O40)}n, was constructed by a self-assembly of H+(H2O)3 clusters, [Cu(H2O)8]2+ clusters, [PW12O40]3− anions and isonicotinic acid N-oxide (HINO). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis at 293K revealed that the title complex presented exactly a three-dimensional (3D) hydrogen-bonded network with large one-dimensional (1D) channels. Interestingly, [PW12O40]3− anions just filled in the 1D channels and self-assembled into poly-Keggin-anion chains. Thermogravimetric analysis shows no weight loss in the temperature range of 20–100°C, indicating that all water molecules in the unit structure are not easily lost below 100°C. The title complex was characterized by a satisfactory ionic conductivity (1–2×10−3Scm−1) in the temperature range 85 to 100°C only. However, it is two orders of magnitude lower than that of Nafion membrane. A possible mechanism of the proton conduction was proposed according to the experimental results.

Abstract:We have succeeded in constructing a 3D POM–MOF, {H[Ni(Hbpdc)(H2O)2]2[PW12O40]·8H2O}n (H2bpdc=2,2′-bipyridyl-3,3′-dicarboxylic acid), by the controllable self-assembly of H2bpdc, Keggin-anions and Ni2+ ions based on the electrostatic and coordination interactions. Interestingly, Hbpdc− as polydentate organic ligands and Keggin-anion as polydentate inorganic ligands are covalently linked transition-metal nickel at the same time. The title complex represents a new example of introducing the metal N-heterocyclic multi-carboxylic acid frameworks into POMs chemistry. Based on Keggin-anions being immobilized as part of the metal N-heterocyclic multi-carboxylic acid framework, the title complex realizes four approaches in the 1D hydrophilic channel used to engender proton conductivity in MOFs. Its water adsorption isotherm at room temperature and pressure shows that the water content in it was 31cm3g−1 at the maximum allowable humidity, corresponding to 3.7 water molecules per unit formula. It exhibits good proton conductivities (10−4–10−3Scm−1) at 100°C in the relative humidity range 35–98%. The corresponding activation energy (Ea) of conductivity was estimated to be 1.01eV.

Abstract:Recently, research on lanthanide based polyoxometalates serving as a new type of proton conducting material holds tremendous promise for electrochemical devices. Herein, we have designed and characterized a new type 3D lanthanide silicotungstic acid proton conductor, namely La0.67(H2O)La(H2O)6 [{La(H2O)3(SiW11O39)}]·7H2O (1) under hydrothermal conditions. Compound 1 is a three-dimensional structure built from lanthanide-substituted polyoxoanion [{La(H2O)3(SiW11O39)}]5− building blocks with large number of channels filled with free water molecules. It shows a high proton conductivity of 1.26 × 10−3 S cm−1 at 90 °C under 98% RH. The activation energy of compound 1 calculated from the Arrhenius plots of the proton conductivity is 0.57 eV, which indicated the vehicle mechanism of proton transfer.

Abstract:Polyoxometalates (POMs), anionic nanosized oxoclusters that can be considered as fragments of metal oxides, have been extensively studied for their diverse composition and structure, showing promise in various fields such as catalysis and electronics. Proton conduction, relevant to catalysis and electronics, has attracted interest in materials chemistry, and POM anions are advantageous in terms of their proton carrier density and mobility. Recently, polar POMs have attracted attention for their unique ferroelectric behaviors, yet they have been little studied with regard to proton conduction, as their polarity has generally been believed to have a negative impact. Here, we propose that polar POMs can be used to align polar proton carriers, such as H2O and polymers, to construct efficient proton-conducting pathways. In this study, we present ionic crystals composed of polar Preyssler-type POMs ([Xn+(H2O)P5W30O110](15-n)-, Xn+ = Ca2+, Eu3+) and K+ exhibiting ultrahigh proton conductivity surpassing 10-2 S cm-1, which is required for practical applications. In contrast, ionic crystals with nonpolar Preyssler-type POMs show an order of magnitude lower proton conductivity. Structural and spectroscopic studies combined with theoretical calculations reveal that proton carriers align with the aid of staggered arrays of polar POMs, forming a hydrogen-bonding network favorable for proton conduction. This study integrates molecular chemistry by the design of POMs and solid-state chemistry by exploring long-range proton conduction mechanisms, offering novel insights for future materials design.

Abstract:Polyoxometalates (POMs), also known as transition metal‐oxygen clusters deliver unique physical and chemical properties such as low effective surface charge density, high thermal stability, and multi-electron acceptance, making them suitable for proton conductors. In recent years, proton conductive POMs have achieved significant progress in high performance (>10 −2 S/cm) comparable to conventional materials through structural regulation strategies. At the same time, the veiled conduction mechanism has been elucidated by structural analysis and characterization. In this review, the research of POMs (Keggin-type, Dawson-type, composite materials) in proton conduction is reviewed mainly from the design strategy, proton conductivity and mechanism, structure-function relationship, and application, finally with a detailed discussion of challenges and prospects. This review will provide more inspiration for exploring and applying proton-conducting POM materials.

Abstract:Two unique polyoxometalate (POM)-encapsulated tubular materials with the formula K(H2O)6[M6(btp)6(H2O)22](P2W18O62)3(Hbtp)5(btp)3·52H2O [M = Mn (1) and Co (2); btp = 2,6-bis(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)pyridine] were designed and synthesized based on the Dawson POM and V-type btp ligand, as confirmed by IR, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and element analysis. Single-crystal XRD analyses of compound 1 show that two kinds of remarkable metal-organic supramolecular nanotubes, including trigonal and hexagonal nanotubes, are constructed along the c-axis direction via π···π-packing interactions between {Mn3(btp)3} rings and the btp ligands, of which [α-P2W18O62]6- anions are confined in channels, making the entire structure extraordinarily stable. Meanwhile, the coordinated [α-P2W18O62]6- anion within the hexagonal channel makes the channel highly hydrophilic and attracts a number of guest water molecules to fill in the free space, conducive to proton transport. Therefore, the single-crystal sample of 1 exhibits a high proton conductivity of 6.39 × 10-3 S cm-1 along one-dimensional channels, 30 times higher than that of a pellet sample at 358 K and 98% relative humidity.

Abstract:Highly efficient proton conductors, polyoxometalate-poly(ethylene glycol) (POM-PEG) hybrid nanocomposites, have been synthesized by encapsulating a single PEG chain inside the 1D nanochannel defined by the frameworks of POMs. By employing two types of neutron scattering techniques complemented by thermal analysis, we prove that in a nanochannel a single PEG chain stays as a distorted helix. More importantly, we reveal that the PEG segments perform a localized longitudinal random walk and quantitatively show the strong correlation between the local motion of PEG and the macroscopic proton conduction of the material. On the basis of these spatial-temporal characteristics, a microscopic picture for the proton conduction process of POM-PEG hybrid materials is proposed.
Decoupling Segmental Dynamics and Ionic Transport for Superionic Anhydrous Proton Conductors of Polyoxometalate-poly(ethylene glycol) Nanocomposites

Abstract:Superionic anhydrous proton conductors can be obtained from the complexation of nanoscale polyoxometalates (POMs) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) in the "polymer in salt" regime. The reduced energy barrier of H+ hopping is facilitated from the increased H+ concentration and shortened inter-POM distances. POMs with identical structure/size (≈1 nm) but different charge densities are complexed with PEG, respectively, with concentrations ranging from 10 to 60 % wt. Increasing trends of viscosities can be observed with the rising charge densities of POMs due to the increasing confinement strength on PEG substrate from POMs. Fractional Walden rule is further applied to analyze the viscosity and proton conductivity correlations, and microscopic mechanisms of proton conduction for PEG-POM nanocomposites are revealed: 1) ion transport is highly associated with polymer chain dynamic for POMs concentrations ranging from 10 to 30 % wt.; 2) ionic conduction is largely decoupled from chain dynamic of polymer matrix for concentrations ranging from 40 to 60 % wt. with Walden plots shifted to the superionic regime. The decoupling of proton transport from polymer segment dynamics allows the simultaneous enhancements of the nanocomposites' mechanical properties and proton conductions, providing guidelines for the rational design of anhydrous proton conductors with integrated functionalities.
Acidic Groups Functionalized Carbon Dots Capping Channels of a Proton Conductive Metal–Organic Framework by Coordination Bonds to Improve the Water-Retention Capacity and Boost Proton Conduction

Abstract:Crystalline porous materials, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), have been demonstrated to be versatile material platforms for the development of solid proton conductors. However, most crystalline porous proton conductors suffer from decreasing proton conductivity with increasing temperature due to releasing water molecules, and this disadvantage severely restricts their practical application in electrochemical devices. In this work, for the first time, hydrophilic carbon dots (CDs) were utilized to hybridize with high proton conductivity MOF-802, which is a model of MOF proton conductors, aiming to improve its water-retention capacity and thus enhance proton conduction. The resultant CDs@MOF-802 exhibits impregnable proton conduction with increasing temperature, and the proton conductivity reaches 10-1 S cm-1, much superior to that of MOF-802, making CDs@MOF-802 one of the most efficient MOF proton conductors reported so far. This study provides a new strategy to improve the water-retention capacity of porous proton conductors and further realize excellent proton conduction.

Abstract:Proton conduction is a fundamental process in biology and in devices such as proton exchange membrane fuel cells. To maximize proton conduction, three-dimensional conduction pathways are preferred over one-dimensional pathways, which prevent conduction in two dimensions. Many crystalline porous solids to date show one-dimensional proton conduction. Here we report porous molecular cages with proton conductivities (up to 10−3 S cm−1 at high relative humidity) that compete with extended metal-organic frameworks. The structure of the organic cage imposes a conduction pathway that is necessarily three-dimensional. The cage molecules also promote proton transfer by confining the water molecules while being sufficiently flexible to allow hydrogen bond reorganization. The proton conduction is explained at the molecular level through a combination of proton conductivity measurements, crystallography, molecular simulations and quasi-elastic neutron scattering. These results provide a starting point for high-temperature, anhydrous proton conductors through inclusion of guests other than water in the cage pores.

Abstract:Although metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) and metalo hydrogen‐bonded organic frameworks (MHOFs) are designed as promising solid‐state proton conductors by incorporating various protonic species intrinsically or extrinsically, design and development of such materials by employing the concept of proton conduction through coordinated polar protic solvent is largely unexplored. Herein, we have constructed two proton‐conducting materials having different solvent coordinated metal cationic species: In‐H2O‐MOF, ({[In(H2O)6][In3(Pzdc)6]·15H2O}n; H2Pzdc: pyrazine‐2,3‐dicarboxylic acid) with coordinated water molecules from hexaaquaindium cationic species, and MHOF‐4, ([{Co(NH3)6}2(2,6‐NDS)2(H2O)2]n; 2,6‐H2NDS: 2,6‐naphthalenedisulfonic acid) with coordinated ammonia from hexaammoniacobalt cationic species. Interestingly, higher proton conductivity was achieved for In‐H2O‐MOF (1.5 × 10‐5 S cm‐1) than MHOF‐4 (6.3 × 10‐6 S cm‐1) under the extreme conditions (80 oC and 95% RH), which could be attributed to enhanced acidity of coordinated water molecules having much lower pKa value than that of coordinated ammonia. Greater charge polarization on hydrogen atoms of In3+‐coordinated water molecules than that of Co2+‐coordinated ammonia led to the high conductivity of In‐H2O‐MOF, as evident by quantum chemical studies. Such a comparative study on metal‐coordinated protic polar solvents in achieving proton conduction in crystalline solids is yet to be made.

Abstract:Ion conduction and transport in solids are both interesting and useful and are found in widely distinct materials, from those in battery-related technologies to those in biological systems. Scientists have approached the synthesis of ion-conductive compounds in a variety of ways, in the areas of organic and inorganic chemistry. Recently, based on their ion-conducting behavior, porous coordination polymers (PCPs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been recognized for their easy design and the dynamic behavior of the ionic components in the structures. These PCP/MOFs consist of metal ions (or clusters) and organic ligands structured via coordination bonds. They could have highly concentrated mobile ions with dynamic behavior, and their characteristics have inspired the design of a new class of ion conductors and transporters. In this Account, we describe the state-of-the-art of studies of ion conductivity by PCP/MOFs and nonporous coordination polymers (CPs) and offer future perspectives. PCP/MOF structures tend to have high hydrophilicity and guest-accessible voids, and scientists have reported many water-mediated proton (H(+)) conductivities. Chemical modification of organic ligands can change the hydrated H(+) conductivity over a wide range. On the other hand, the designable structures also permit water-free (anhydrous) H(+) conductivity. The incorporation of protic guests such as imidazole and 1,2,4-triazole into the microchannels of PCP/MOFs promotes the dynamic motion of guest molecules, resulting in high H(+) conduction without water. Not only the host-guest systems, but the embedding of protic organic groups on CPs also results in inherent H(+) conductivity. We have observed high H(+) conductivities under anhydrous conditions and in the intermediate temperature region of organic and inorganic conductors. The keys to successful construction are highly mobile ionic species and appropriate intervals of ion-hopping sites in the structures. Lithium (Li(+)) and other ions can also be transported. If we can optimize the crystal structures, this could offer further improvements in terms of both conductivity and the working temperature range. Another useful characteristic of PCP/MOFs is their wide application to materials fabrication. We can easily prepare heterodomain crystal systems, such as core-shell or solid solution. Other anisotropic morphologies (thin film, nanocrystal, nanorod, etc.,) are also possible, with retention of the ion conductivity. The flexible nature also lets us design morphology-dependent ion-conduction behaviors that we cannot observe in the bulk state. We propose (1) multivalent ion and anion conductions with the aid of redox activity and defects in structures, (2) control of ion transport behavior by applying external stimuli, (3) anomalous conductivity at the hetero-solid-solid interface, and (4) unidirectional ion transport as in the ion channels in membrane proteins. In the future, scientists may use coordination polymers not only to achieve higher conductivity but also to control ion behavior, which will open new avenues in solid-state ionics.
Significant Proton Conductivity Enhancement Through Rapid Water Induced Structural Transformation from A Cationic Framework to A Water-Rich Neutral Chain

Abstract:Searching for new host materials tailored for the high proton conductivity is highly desirable for the new generation of fuel cell system. We report here an anion exchangeable cationic metal organic framework with the formula of [Ce(Ccbp)(2)]Br0.25Cl0.75 center dot 6H(2)O center dot 2DMF (compound 1), which is constructed through the self-assembly of zwitterionic-based ligands H(2)CcbpBr (H(2)CcbpBr = 4-carboxy-1-(4-carboxybenzyl)pyridinium bromide) and (NH4)(2)Ce(NO3)(6). During the investigation of humidity dependent proton conduction behavior, we.observed a rate case of rapid water-induced single-crystal-to-single-crystal phase transformation from compound 1 to a neutral chain [Ce(Ccbp)(3)(H2O)(3)]center dot 8H(2)O (compound 2). This structural transformation originates from the coordination of water to Ce(III) metal centers, distortion of ligands, and the soft nature of the Cationic framework 1, as probed and confirmed by a variety of investigations including color change; water vapor adsorption measurement, powder X-ray diffraction, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, humidity-dependent proton-conducting measurements, IR and UV-vis spectroscopies, and thermogravimetric analysis. As a consequence, this process introduces significant amounts of both coordinated and lattice water molecules into the structure, further giving rise to a decent water-assisted proton conductivity of 1.104 X 10(-4) S cm(-1) at 368 K and 95% relative humidity.

Abstract:The long–term stability of proton conductors is one of the most important factors in evaluating materials. Guest molecules can act as “bridges” for proton conduction channels and reside in the channels of covalent organic frameworks, but they are prone to leakage. Therefore, it is important to develop proton conductors with intrinsic proton conductivity. In this paper, we synthesized an intrinsically sulfonated covalent organic framework, TpPa–SO3H, which has a more stable proton conducting performance than that of TpPa@H2SO4 by loading guest molecules. Meanwhile, the proton conductivity of TpPa–SO3H was further improved by coating a superabsorbent polymer through an in situ reaction to obtain PANa@TpPa–SO3H (PANa: sodium polyacrylate). As a result, the modified composite exhibits an ultrahigh proton conductivity of 2.33 × 10−1 S cm−1 at 80 °C under 95% relative humidity (RH). The stability of PANa@TpPa–SO3H makes it an efficient proton transport platform with excellent proton conductivity and long–term durability.

Abstract:Polyoxometalates (POMs) are inorganic polyacid clusters that can release multiple protons. Because of its high electrolyte solubility, poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) is the most important matrix for solid electrolytes composed of polymer/electrolyte mixtures. We herein combined the characteristics of POMs and PEOs to develop proton-conducting solid electrolytes wherein both components are covalently linked to the main chain. After synthesizing the POM- and PEO-containing norbornene monomers, we prepared block and random hybrid copolymers (weight-average molecular mass of 270–470 kDa) composed of POM–polyelectrolyte complexes and PEO bottlebrush polymers via living ring-opening metathesis polymerization. When all organic cationic counterions associated with the POM pendant had been exchanged with protons, the molecular weights of the copolymer polyelectrolytes were similar to the theoretical values, implying that the copolymer remained intact. The proton conductivities were 111 and 30–35.7 mS cm–1 for the random and block copolymer polyelectrolytes, respectively, at 80 °C and 100% relative humidity.
Unique Proton Transportation Pathway in a Robust Inorganic Coordination Polymer Leading to Intrinsically High and Sustainable Anhydrous Proton Conductivity

Abstract:Although comprehensive progress has been made in the area of coordination polymer (CP)/metal-organic framework (MOF)-based proton-conducting materials over the past decade, searching for a CP/MOF with stable, intrinsic, high anhydrous proton conductivity that can be directly used as a practical electrolyte in an intermediate-temperature proton-exchange membrane fuel cell assembly for durable power generation remains a substantial challenge. Here, we introduce a new proton-conducting CP, (NH4)3[Zr(H2/3PO4)3] (ZrP), which consists of one-dimensional zirconium phosphate anionic chains and fully ordered charge-balancing NH4+ cations. X-ray crystallography, neutron powder diffraction, and variable-temperature solid-state NMR spectroscopy suggest that protons are disordered within an inherent hydrogen-bonded infinite chain of acid-base pairs (N-H···O-P), leading to a stable anhydrous proton conductivity of 1.45 × 10-3 S·cm-1 at 180 °C, one of the highest values among reported intermediate-temperature proton-conducting materials. First-principles and quantum molecular dynamics simulations were used to directly visualize the unique proton transport pathway involving very efficient proton exchange between NH4+ and phosphate pairs, which is distinct from the common guest encapsulation/dehydration/superprotonic transition mechanisms. ZrP as the electrolyte was further assembled into a H2/O2 fuel cell, which showed a record-high electrical power density of 12 mW·cm-2 at 180 °C among reported cells assembled from crystalline solid electrolytes, as well as a direct methanol fuel cell for the first time to demonstrate real applications. These cells were tested for over 15 h without notable power loss.

Abstract:Confining hydrated hydrogen bonds to generate proton channel is a promising strategy to promote the intrinsic proton conductivity, while high water-harvesting capacity is the key for proton-conducting material. Herein, by preinstalling proton donor groups, two covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with exceptional water adsorption capacity (2,6-DHNA-TA and 2,3-DHNA-TA) were rationally designed. 2,6-DHNA-TA possesses a hexa-leaf clover pore, and the hydroxyl groups are suspended anisotropically to the edges of adjacent pores, forming independent hydrophilic domains. 2,3-DHNA-TA is exhibits hexagonal pore, and the hydrophilic diketone group in each compartment forms a wide hydrophilic band. Grand canonical Monte Carlo method is applied to verify that water molecules are preferentially adsorbed at the hydrophilic sites, and the water-filled process initiates at predefined independent anchors and terminates in domain-limited mesopores. Free water is enriched in COFs pores and rearrange in short and dense hydrogen bonds, facilitating proton conduction at low energy barriers. The two COFs exhibit excellent proton conductivity, especially for 2,6-DHNA-TA (1.27×10-3 S cm-1), which supasses most of the reported COFs. This work extends the application of water confinement strategy to proton conduction.

Abstract:In the fields of proton exchange membrane fuel cells as well as impedance recognition, molecular sieve, and biochemistry, the development of proton conductive materials is essential. The design and preparation of the next generation of proton conductive materials—crystalline metal–organic framework (MOF) materials with high proton conductivity and excellent water stability—are facing great challenges. Due to the large radius and high positive charge of lanthanides, they often interact with organic ligands to exhibit high coordination numbers and flexible coordination configurations, resulting in the higher stability of lanthanide-based MOFs (Ln-MOFs) than their transition metal analogues, especially regarding water stability. Therefore, Ln-MOFs have attracted considerable attention. This review offers a view of the latest progress of proton conductive Ln-MOFs, including synthesis strategy, structural characteristics, and advantages, proton conductivity, proton conductive mechanism, and applications.
