Abstract:Result 1.Hospital-based prevalence in infants under the age of 2 years in 2009, 2010 and 2011 is 0.26‰, 0.40‰, 0.39‰ relatively. On average it’s 0.35‰. Period from July to September in every year is the peak time of doctor visiting. 2. Most (99.8%)of infants with premature thelarche are manifested as isolated premature thelarche, while only 0.2% are represented as peripheral precocious puberty. 3. Among the patients under the age of 2 years with isolated premature thelarche 89.5% of them get a regression between the age of 2 and 3 years( The average of regression age is 17±5.8 months), 10.5% of them do not make recovery by the age of 3 years and even some (0.4%) turn into central precocious puberty(CPP). 4. The two influencing factors of breast regression are breast size by the first time of doctor visiting and whether basal estrogen is high or not.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the clinical status and natural course of premature thelarche (PT) in infants under 2 years of age and to analyze the predictive factors for regression of thelarche.METHODS:The clinical and laboratory data of 863 infants under 2 years of age, who visited the department of endocrinology in our hospital due to PT between October 2009 and September 2010, were analyzed. A a longitudinal follow-up study was performed.RESULTS:Of the infants under 2 years of age with isolated PT, 89.3% showed a regression before the age of 3 years (mean 17±5.6 months), 10.7% had recurrent or persistent thelarche, with no regression after the age of 3 years, and some even developed into central precocious puberty. The independent predictive factors for regression of thelarche were Tanner stage at the first visit and whether baseline estradiol level had increased.CONCLUSIONS:PT in infants under 2 years of age is not rare in the clinical setting, and it usually runs a self-limited course, subsiding before the age of 3 years. However, regular follow-ups should be performed for infants aged over 2 years with persistent thelarche.

Abstract:Objective: To explore the association between maternal bisphenol A (BPA) exposure during pregnancy and neurobehavioral development in infant. Methods: Participants were from the Ma'anshan Birth Cohort, which was established from October 2008 to October 2010 based on four municipal medical and health institutions in Ma'anshan. High-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was applied for the determination of serum BPA concentration in 1 783 pregnant women sampled at their first filing, and during 2.97 to 28.1 months age of the infants. Neurobehavioral development were assessed by 0-6-year-old pediatric examination table of neuropsychological development. Generalized linear model was used to analyze the association between serum BPA levels during pregnancy and infants' neurobehavioral development. Results: A total of 931 mother-child pairs had complete data on serum BPA detection during pregnancy and assessment of infants' neurobehavioral development status. The age of pregnant women at their first filing was (26.67±3.45) years old, and the M (P25,P75) of serum BPA concentration (ng/ml) was 0.23 (0.11, 0.52), with a detection rate of 84.1% (783/931). The age of infants was (13.18±5.46) months, and 53.5% (498) were boys. The developmental quotient scores of large motor, fine motor, adaptive ability, language ability and social behaviors of infants were (97.88±16.32), (97.16±15.35), (99.64±15.47), (95.3±16.04) and (98.95±14.76) points, respectively. Generalized linear model showed that after adjusting for factors such as delivery mode, feeding mode, family per capita monthly income, preterm delivery, gender, maternal age, residence, pre-pregnancy body mass index and residence time, serum BPA level in pregnancy was negatively associated with infant's development of social behavior [β (95%CI):-2.42 (-4.71, -0.12)]. The post-stratification analysis by infant age revealed that the serum BPA level in pregnancy was only negatively associated with the development of language and social behavior developmental quotient scores in infants between the ages of 12 and 18 months, with β (95%CI) about -6.66 (-13.06, -0.25) and -7.401 (-12.97, -1.83), respectively. Conclusion: BPA exposure during pregnancy affects language and social behavior development in infants, and the detection window is between 12 and 18 months old of the infant.
Serum Concentration of Bisphenol Analogues in Pregnant Women in China.

Abstract:There is increasing concern regarding human exposure to bisphenol analogues (BPs) due to their widespread use and potentially adverse effects. Nevertheless, information on the occurrence of BPs in pregnant women is limited. In this study, BPs were detected in 181 serum samples from pregnant Chinese women. Ten BPs, including bisphenol S (BPS), bisphenol F (BPF), bisphenol AF (BPAF), bisphenol B (BPB), bisphenol P (BPP), bisphenol Z (BPZ), bisphenol AP (BPAP), tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), tetrabromobisphenol S (TBBPS), and tetrachlorobisphenol A (TCBPA), were positively identified and quantified in serum samples with total BP concentrations (sum of bisphenols: Sigma BPs) of 0-144 ng/mL. Concentrations of the two frequently detected compounds, TBBPS and BPS, were 0.593 and 0.113 ng/mL, respectively. The results were also compared with the geographic distributions of the BPs. To our knowledge, this is the first time that TBBPS and TCBPA have been detected in serum samples of pregnant women. These findings suggest that additional studies are urgently needed to identify the risk of maternal and fetal exposure to these compounds. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Physis is a complex cartilaginous structure that is critical for longitudinal bone growth. As one of the endocrine-disrupting chemicals, bisphenol A (BPA) can interfere with the physis by deranging the complex networks of nutritional, cellular, paracrine, and endocrine factors, and this affects longitudinal bone growth, leading to different growth outcomes. However, the exact mechanisms underlying these phenomena remain unclear. Therefore, understanding the molecular pathways involved in the physis after neonatal exposure to low-dose BPA may permit the identification of research targets for therapeutics, which may aid in modulating the process of growth plate closure. In the present study, female Sprague–Dawley rats were exposed to 0.05 mg·kg−1·day−1 of BPA and corn oil vehicle from postnatal day 1 (PND1) to 15 via subcutaneous injection. Next-generation RNA sequencing was performed for the mRNA isolated from the physis. The levels of osteocalcin (OC), growth hormone (GH), and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) were measured on PND30 (BPA0.05mg vs. Vehicle; n = 5 for each group). We observed statistically significant enrichment of gene sets in the BPA0.05mg tissues compared with the Vehicle tissues. Further analysis of the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) identified BPA0.05mg-specific networks of secreted proteins (LEP, NPY, AGT, ACE2, C4B, and C4BPA) as well as those of local matrix and protease proteins (FBN2, LAMC2, ADAMTS16, and ADAMTS19). Furthermore, the levels of OC and GH were affected by BPA exposure. Our results revealed the specific molecular characteristics of physis contaminated with BPA and may provide new clues for physis maturation and supervision of industrial products and occupational exposure.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the role of bisphenol A (BPA), octylphenol (OP), 4-nonylphenol(4-NP) causing precocious girls.METHODS:The blood samples were collected from 110 cases of precocious girls and 100 cases of normal girls. The concentrations of BPA, OP, 4-NP in serum samples were measured by using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), the volume of the uteruse and ovary, the content of estradiol (E2) were determined at the same time. The contents of BPA, OP, 4-NP in blood serum of precocious girls and the indices of the target organs were analyed by using correlation.RESULTS:BPA and, OP were detected in blood serum for 40.9% and 33.6% of precocious girls respectively, BPA and OP were detected for only 2% and 5% in normal girls respectively, 4-NP was detected for 24.54% of precocious girls and 3% of normal girls. The ratio of BPA, OP, 4-NP in blood serum of precocious girls was higher than normal girls respectively (P < 0.01), BPA in blood serum of precocious girls patients was positive correlation with the volume of the uterus (r = 0.557, P < 0.05), and positive correlation with volume of the ovary (r = 0.469, P < 0.01). OP in blood serum of precocious girls patients was positive correlation with the volume of uterus (r = 0.576, P < 0.05), positive correlation with volume of ovary (r = 0.676, P < 0.01).CONCLUSION:Precocious girls patients were contaminated more severely than normal girls, and BPA, OP could influence the volume of the uterus and ovary, so it had some relationship with cause of precocious girls.

Abstract:Background: Bisphenol A (BPA) is an environmental endocrine disruptor and is found in many consumer products. Animal studies suggest that BPA may perturb pubertal development in males, although studies in humans are limited. Objective: This study investigated the association between BPA exposure and pubertal onset and progression among school-aged boys in Shanghai, China. Methods: A total of 671 boys aged 9-18 years from three schools (one elementary, one middle, and one high school) in Shanghai were enrolled in a cross-sectional study. Tanner stages for genital and pubic hair development and testicular volume were assessed by a specifically trained physician. Information concerning spermarche was self-reported. Urine samples were collected to examine peripubertal BPA exposure levels. Associations between BPA exposure and pubertal development, as indicated by the presence of different milestones in early puberty, mid-puberty and late puberty, were assessed using Poisson multivariate regression to derive adjusted prevalence ratios (PRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: Earlier onset of genital and pubic hair development was observed in boys with moderate BPA exposure compared with those exposed to the least BPA; the adjusted PRs were 1.31 (95%CI:1.03, 1.68) and 1.28 (95%CI:1.02, 1.60) for onset of genital maturation and pubic hair development, respectively. A similar trend was seen for onset of testicular development, although the association was not statistically significant. Conversely, compared with the lowest level of BPA exposure, moderate BPA exposure was associated with delayed presence of the late stage of genital development, with an adjusted PR of 0.78 (95%CI: 0.65, 0.92). A suggestive inverse association was also observed between BPA exposure and late progression of testicular development. Conclusions: Our findings indicate an association between peripubertal BPA exposure and earlier pubertal onset, but delayed pubertal progression, in boys. Longitudinal studies of male pubertal development with periodic follow-up are needed to verify these results. (C) 2016 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.
Prenatal Bisphenol A Exposure and Early Childhood Behavior and Cognitive Function: A Chinese Birth Cohort Study

Abstract:Introduction: Biomonitoring of bisphenol A (BPA) in human blood is still scarce, although already noticeable. We aimed to examine the associations between prenatal serum BPA concentrations and behavior and cognitive function in preschool children. Methods: A total of 1,782 mother-child pairs with complete demographic information, blood samples, and psychological measurements were included from the China-Anhui Birth Cohort (C-ABCS). We detected serum BPA concentrations and assessed children's neurodevelopment using a set of psychometric scales. Results: The median prenatal maternal serum BPA concentration was 0.23 (P25, P75: 0.07, 0.52) ng/mL, with a detection frequency of 85.19%. Compared with the girls with the lowest concentrations, those with highest BPA concentrations had increased risks of inhibitory self-control impairment [relative risk (RR) = 3.66, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.53, 7.58], emergent metacognition impairment (RR = 1.70, 95% CI: 1.07, 2.78), conduct problem (RR = 1.68, 95% CI: 1.12, 2.39), peer relationship problem (RR = 2.57, 95% CI: 1.33, 4.47), higher total difficulties score (RR = 1.76, 95% CI: 1.12, 2.67), and higher impact factor score (RR = 1.52, 95% CI: 1.11, 2.05), while the boys with the highest prenatal BPA concentrations had an increased risk of conduct problem compared with those with the lowest concentrations (RR = 1.59, 95% CI: 1.09, 2.24) (P-interaction = 0.011). After stratification by age, high prenatal BPA concentrations were associated with increased ADHD (RR = 4.44, 95% CI: 1.54, 10.85) among children aged 3 years, not among children aged 4 years. Conclusion: Our study revealed the sex-specific and age-specific impacts of prenatal BPA exposure on preschool children's cognitive and behavioral development.

Abstract:Background Growing evidence suggests that exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) during pregnancy could interfere with neonatal thyroid function. Bisphenol F (BPF) and bisphenol S (BPS) are increasingly used as the substitutes of BPA. However, little is known about the effects of maternal exposure to BPS and BPF on neonatal thyroid function. The current study was aimed to investigate the trimester-specific associations of maternal exposure to BPA, BPS, and BPF with neonatal thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels. Methods Between November 2013 and March 2015, a total of 904 mother-newborn pairs were recruited from the Wuhan Healthy Baby Cohort Study, providing maternal urine samples in the first, second, and third trimesters for bisphenol exposure assessment, and neonatal heel prick blood samples for TSH measurement. Multiple informant model and quantile g-computation were used to evaluate the trimester-specific associations of bisphenols individually and mixture with TSH, respectively. Results Each doubling concentration increase of maternal urinary BPA in the first trimester was significantly related to a 3.64 % (95% CI: 0.84 %, 6.51 %) increment in neonatal TSH. Each doubling concentration increase of BPS in the first, second and third trimesters were associated with 5.81 % (95 % CI: 2.27 %, 9.46 %), 5.70 % (95 % CI: 1.99 %, 9.55 %), 4.36 % (95 % CI: 0.75 %, 8.11 %) higher neonatal blood TSH, respectively. No significant association between trimester-specific BPF concentration and TSH was observed. The relationships between exposures to BPA/BPS and neonatal TSH were more evident in female infants. Quantile g-computation indicated that maternal co-exposure to bisphenols in the first trimester was significantly associated with neonatal TSH levels in a non-linear fashion. Conclusion Maternal exposure to BPA and BPS were positively associated with neonatal TSH levels. The results indicated the endocrine disrupting effect of prenatal exposure to BPS and BPA, which should be of particular concern.

Abstract:Findings about the association between prenatal Bisphenol A (BPA) exposure and neurobehavioral development in children are still inconsistent. In addition, whether fetal thyroid hormones (THs) mediate the reported association remains unclear. The present study aimed to examine the association between prenatal BPA exposure and risks of child behavioral problems at 2 and 4 years of age and whether the association could be explained by alteration of fetal THs as measured in cord plasma. Using the Shanghai-Minhang Birth Cohort Study (S-MBCS), BPA concentration was measured in maternal urine samples collected at 12-16 weeks of gestation. Children's neurobehavioral development was assessed using the Child Behavior Checklist/1.5-5 (CBCL), at 2 and 4 years of age. Using generalized estimating equation (GEE) models, 745 mother-pairs were included to examine associations of BPA with CBCL scores, Using multiple linear regression models, 348 mother-pairs were included to evaluate the association between maternal BPA and THs in cord plasma. A mediation analysis was conducted to explore the potential mediating role of THs. After adjusting for potential confounders, prenatal BPA level was associated with increased risks of Emotionally Reactive problem, Anxious/Depressed problem, having Somatic Complaints, exhibiting Aggressive Behavior, and Internalizing and Externalizing Problems: compared to the lowest tertile, the risks in the highest tertile and middle tertile, ranged between 1.55-fold (95% CI: 1.09, 2.21) and 2.59-fold (95% CI: 1.52, 4.42). The association was more pronounced among boys. None of the associations reached statistical significance among girls. An inverse association between prenatal BPA and fetal TH level was also observed. However, the observed neurotoxic effects of prenatal BPA exposure did not appear to be mediated by THs levels. The current findings suggest that prenatal exposure to BPA may disrupt fetal THs levels and may induce long-lasting behavioral alterations, especially in boys. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Bisphenol A (BPA) and its alternatives bisphenol S (BPS) and bisphenol F (BPF) are identified as endocrine disruptors that have negative impacts on infant growth. Their temporal variations in human milk and potential effects on fetal growth are not well known. In this study, colostrum collecting at four time points between 2006 and 2019 and paired urine in 2019 from Shanghai, China, were analyzed for eight bisphenols. The total concentrations in colostrum in 2019 were up to 3.43 ng/mL, with BPA being dominant, followed by BPS and BPF. BPA levels in colostrum noticeably decreased from 2010 to 2013. Additionally, obvious percentage changes in bisphenols were observed in 2019. The BPA concentrations in paired colostrum and urine were not significantly correlated. High levels of BPA in colostrum were linked to a significant reduction in birth head circumference in 2019 ( p = 0.031). BPA and BPS in colostrum might have similar negative effect on fetal growth in 2019, but these effects were generally non-significant. Further studies are needed to testify the potential impact. The hazard indexes for infants in the first week of life were below 1, suggesting no obvious health risks. However, the high contribution from BPA still warrants further attention.

Abstract:The impact of maternal exposure to Bisphenol A on child cognitive development as well as its sex dimorphism remains uncertain. This study used data of 215 mothers and their children from a birth cohort in Shanghai. Urinary BPA were measured in spot urine samples of mothers at late pregnancy and children at age 2 years. Cognitive development was evaluated by Ages & Stages Questionnaires, Third Edition (ASQ-3) at age 2 years. Urinary BPA was detectable in 98.9% of mothers (geometric mean, GM: 2.6 μg/g. creatinine) and 99.8% children (GM: 3.4 μg/g. creatinine). Relative to the low and medium BPA tertiles, high tertile of maternal urinary BPA concentrations were associated with 4.8 points lower (95% CI: -8.3, -1.2) in gross motor and 3.7 points lower (95% CI: -7.4, -0.1) in problem-solving domain in girls only, with adjustment for maternal age, maternal education, pre-pregnancy BMI, passive smoking during pregnancy, parity, delivery mode, birth-weight for gestational age, child age at ASQ-3 test. This negative association remained with additional adjustment for child urinary BPA concentrations at age 2 years. No association was observed in boys. These results suggested the sex-dimorphism on the associations of maternal BPA exposure with gross motor and problem-solving domains in children at age 2 years. This study also indicated that optimal early child development should start with a healthy BPA-free "in utero" environment.

Abstract:Many studies show that bisphenol A (BPA) is widespread in human breast milk. However, the occurrence of other bisphenol analogues (BPs), including bisphenol S (BPS), bisphenol F (BPF), and bisphenol AF (BPAF), in breast milk is still not well known. In this study, breast milk samples were collected from 190 women in Hangzhou, China, with the aims to characterize the occurrence of BPA, BPS, BPF, and BPAF in these samples and to investigate their effects on postnatal growth of infants through breast milk consumption. BPA (mean 2.5 ng/mL, range < LOD-15 ng/mL) was the most abundant BP in breast milk, followed by BPS (0.19 ng/mL,<LOD-1.3 ng/mL). BPAF (0.092 ng/mL, <LOD-0.58 ng/mL). BPF was not detected in all breast milk samples. We firstly found that breast milk concentrations of BPA were negatively correlated with infant's weight or length gain rate. Daily intakes (Drs) of BPs via the consumption of breast milk were calculated for infants, and the mean DI values were 531 ng/kg/day, 53 ng/kg/day, and 24 ng/kg/day for BPA, BPS, and BPAF, respectively. Overall, this study firstly demonstrats that the lactation exposure to BPA through breast milk consumption may affect the postnatal growth of infants. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Association Between Bisphenol a Exposure and Idiopathic Central Precocious Puberty (ICPP) among School-Aged Girls in Shanghai, China.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Bisphenol A (BPA) is a well-known and widely used endocrine disrupter, but data on its association with childhood reproductive development are limited.OBJECTIVES:We investigated the possible relationship between exposure to BPA and idiopathic central precocious puberty (ICPP) in school-aged girls.METHODS:We conducted a 1:1 matched case-control study in Shanghai, China, between July 2011 and September 2012. This study included 136 school-aged (6 to 9 years old) girls diagnosed with ICPP and 136 controls matched for age and body mass index (BMI). We measured the urinary BPA concentrations of all the girls and examined the association with odds of having ICPP. Laboratory examinations including serum estradiol (E2) levels, basal and gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-stimulated luteinizing hormone (LH), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels, bone ages (BA), and uterine and ovarian sizes were conducted in the ICPP girls.RESULTS:Median concentrations of urinary BPA in the ICPP and control groups were 6.35 and 1.17 μg/g creatinine (Cr), respectively (p < 0.001). After adjustment for confounders, compared to those with the lowest concentrations of BPA, the highest concentrations were associated with a 9.08-fold increased odds of having ICPP [odds ratio (OR) = 9.08, (95% confidence interval (CI): 2.83-29.15)]. In the ICPP group, modest negative correlation was present between urinary BPA concentrations (μg/g Cr) and peak FSH levels [β = -0.090 (95% CI: -0.178, -0.003), p = 0.044].CONCLUSIONS:Our findings suggest that BPA exposure is associated with increased odds of having ICPP in school-aged girls, and the potential mechanism may be attributable to the relatively low FSH levels.
[Multi-center study of premature thelarche and gynecomastia in Chinese infants and toddlers]

Abstract:Objective: The term "premature thelarche" refers to isolated breast development before 8 years of age in female, without any other signs of sexual maturation, while "gynecomastia" is the presence of breast tissue in males. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of premature thelarche and gynecomastia in Chinese infants and toddlers, identify the potential risk factors, and explore the influence of early breast development on physical growth, mental development and psychomotor development. Method: A total of 1 510 full term and healthy children at the age of 0-48 months were sampled by stratified cluster random sampling method from 8 provinces from 2011-2012. Weight, height and breast development were assessed by senior primary pediatricians, while Bayley Scale of Infant Development-I (BSID-I) was used to measure the mental developmental index (MDI) and psychomotor developmental index (PDI) for children aged 2-30 months. Social-demographic Questionnaires were completed by the caregivers. Result: The combined prevalence of premature thelarche and gynecomastia was 1.6% (23/1 475), girls 2.2% (15/695), boys 1.0% (8/780), all within 2 years of age. The birth weight, feeding patterns in first 4 months, delivery mode, weaning time and social economic status were not significantly associated with the breast development. However, lower father's education level (OR = 3.632, 95%CI = 1.565-8.432) as well as smoking mother (OR = 18.960, 95%CI = 1.590-226.304) were significantly related to breast development even after adjusting for potential confounders. Lower weight (-0.479 ± 0.648 vs. 0.005 ± 0.987, P < 0.05) and height (-0.602 ± 1.042 vs. 0.008 ± 0.986, P < 0.05) Z score were found in breast development group, even after adjusting for age, gender and father' education level. Neither mental development (t = -0.082, P > 0.05) nor psychomotor development (t = 1.054, P > 0.05) was associated with breast development. Conclusion: We showed a similar prevalence of premature thelarche with the data reported in similar studies reported from other countries. Among the 0-48 months old infants and toddlers, Father's education level and smoking mother were both related to breast development. Breast development was significantly associated with physical growth, but had no correlation with the mental or psychomotor development.
Maternal Serum Bisphenol A Levels and Risk of Pre-Eclampsia: a Nested Case–control Study

Abstract:Although recent studies have indicated the potential adverse effects of maternal bisphenol A (BPA) exposure on pregnancy such as increasing the risk of pre-eclampsia, epidemiological evidence is limited. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between maternal BPA exposure and the risk of pre-eclampsia. We conducted a nested case-control study among 173 women (74 cases of pre-eclampsia and 99 controls). BPA concentrations were measured using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry in the maternal serum samples collected during 16-20 gestational weeks. Multivariate logistic models were used to examine the relationship between maternal serum BPA concentrations and the risk of pre-eclampsia. BPA was detectable (> 0.1 A mu g/l) in 78.6% of the maternal serum samples at three levels: low (< 2.24 A mu g/l), medium (2.24-4.44 A mu g/l), and high (> 4.44 A mu g/l). BPA concentrations were significantly higher in the serum samples collected from the pre-eclampsia cases than those from controls (median: 3.40 vs. 1.50 A mu g/l, P < 0.01). With adjustment for maternal age, primiparous and BMI, the odds of developing pre-eclampsia were significantly elevated in subjects with high serum BPA levels compared with those with low levels (adjusted OR = 16.46, 95%CI = 5.42-49.85) regardless of subcategories of pre-eclampsia including severity and onset time. Among the pre-eclampsia subjects, the maternal serum concentration of BPA was not different between the early- and late-onset subjects (median: 3.09 vs. 3.50 A mu g/l, P = 0.57), but surprisingly higher in mild pre-eclampsia subjects compared with severe pre-eclampsia subjects (median: 5.20 vs. 1.80 A mu g/l, P < 0.01). These results demonstrated that maternal exposure to high level of BPA could be associated with an increased risk of pre-eclampsia.
Associations of exposure to bisphenol A and its substitutes with neurodevelopmental outcomes among infants at 12 months of age: A cross-sectional study

Abstract:Background Bisphenol A (BPA) exposure has been linked to adverse childhood neurodevelopment, but little is known about whether BPA substitutes exposures are also related to childhood neurodevelopment. Objectives To investigate the associations of exposure to BPA and its substitutes with infant neurodevelopment at 12 months. Methods A total of 420 infants at 12 months were included from the Laizhou Wan (Bay) Birth Cohort in Shandong, China. Urinary concentrations of BPA and its substitutes including bisphenol S (BPS), bisphenol B (BPB), bisphenol AF (BPAF), bisphenol AP (BPAP), bisphenol P (BPP) and bisphenol Z (BPZ) were measured. Developmental quotient (DQ) scores based on the Gesell Development Schedules (GDS) were used to evaluate infant neurodevelopment. The multivariable linear regression and weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression were applied to estimate the associations of exposure to individual bisphenols and their mixtures with DQ scores, respectively. Sex-stratified analyses were also performed. Results BPA was detected in most infants (89.05%) and had the highest median concentration (0.709 ng/mL) among all bisphenols. BPA substitutes except BPZ were ubiquitous in infants' urine samples (>70%), and BPS showed the highest median concentration (0.064 ng/mL) followed by BPAP (0.036 ng/mL), BPAF (0.028 ng/mL), BPP (0.015 ng/mL) and BPB (0.013 ng/mL). In multivariable linear regression, only BPAF exposure was inversely associated with social DQ scores among all infants (β = −0.334; 95% CI: −0.650, −0.019). After sex stratification, this inverse association was significant in girls (β = −0.605; 95% CI: −1.030, −0.180). Besides, BPA exposure was negatively related to gross motor DQ scores in boys (β = −1.061; 95% CI: −2.078, −0.045). WQS analyses confirmed these results. Conclusions Our study suggests that bisphenol exposure during infancy may be associated with poor infant neurodevelopment, and BPAF as a commonly used BPA substitute contributing the most to this adverse association deserves more attention.

Abstract:This study aims to investigate the associations of bisphenols with sex and thyroid hormones in cord blood among newborns. Four bisphenols, three hormones related to gonadal function, and four parameters related to thyroid function were measured in umbilical cord blood in 378 mother-newborn pairs. Multivariable linear regression, quantile-based g-computation (QGC), and Bayesian kernel machine regression were used. In the multivariable linear regression, bisphenol A ( BPA) was associated with increased testosterone (TT) (regression coefficient, β= 0.049, 95% confidence interval, CI: 0.013,0.085; p = 0.007) and free tri-iodothyronine (FT3) levels (β= 0.019, 95% CI: 0.003, 0.035; p = 0.023), and decreased thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) (β = -0.053, 95% CI: -0.098, -0.008; p = 0.021). Consistently associations were observed in males, except TT, which was observed in females, and bisphenol AF (BPAF) was associated with decreased follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in females. These associations were also observed in a mixture of bisphenols. Moreover, we observed maternal prepregnancy body mass index (BMI) and delivery mode disparity in the relationship between bisphenols and sex and thyroid hormones. This study suggests that bisphenols may exert effects on sex and thyroid hormones in newborns, the effect may vary with sex differences, maternal prepregnancy BMI, and delivery mode.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To determine the levels of the di-n-butyl phthalate and di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate in the serum of precocious girls in Shanghai, and study the development relationship between DBP, DEHP and precocious girls.METHODS:The concentrations of two phthalates (di-n-butyl phthalate, DBP, di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate, DEHP) in serum of 110 precocious girls and 100 normal children were measured by using gas chromatography, in the same time, the volumes of the uteruses and ovaries for precocious girls and normal children were measured by B-ultrasound and then did correlation analysis between the concentrations of DBP, DEHP and the volumes of uteruses and ovaries of precocious girls.RESULTS:DBP and DEHP were detected for 27.3% and 22.7% in precocious girls respectively, DBP and DEHP were detected for only 4% and 3% in normal children respectively. From the ratio of DBP and DEHP in serum of precocious girls were higher than normal children. Precocious girls uteruses and ovaries volume were higher than those of normal children respectively (P < 0.05, P < 0.05). DBP in serum of precocious girls had positive correlation with the volumes of the uteruses (r = 0.456, P < 0.05), and had positive correlation with volumes of the ovaries (r = 0.378, P < 0.01). DEHP in serum of precocious puberty had positive correlation with the volumes of uteruses (r = 0.382, P < 0.05), and had positive correlation with volumes of ovaries (r = 0.689, P < 0.01).CONCLUSION:Precocious girls could be contaminated more severely than normal girls, and DBP, DEHP could influence the volumes of the uteruses and ovaries.
