Abstract:This paper deals with the ultrasonic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC·HCl) in aqueous solution and reveals the effects of ultrasonic frequency, ultrasonic power, initial mass concentration of the solution, pH value and anion on the degradation efficiency. The results indicate that (1) with ultrasonic irradiation, TC·HCl in aqueous solution effectively degrades with high speed, which accords with the pseudo first-order reaction model; (2) at a pH value of about 5.60, 88.17% of 1.00 mg/L TC·HCl is decomposed within 20 min under the irradiation with 400 kHz and 100 W ultrasonic; (3) the degradation rate of TC·HCl increases with the increase in ultrasonic power and with the decrease in the initial TC·HCl concentration; (4) the pH value of the solution greatly influences the TC·HCl degradation and the degradation performs well in alkaline condition; and (5) Cl- and SO4 2- slightly inhibit the degradation, while NO3 -, HCO3 - and HPO4 2- accelerate the degradation, especially the latter two.

Abstract:Degradation of ibuprofen (IBP) at two concentrations (0.05 and 0.1mM) through ultrasonic irradiation at 585kHz was studied under the air-, oxygen-, argon-, and nitrogen-saturated conditions. Effects of H2O2 on the degradation of IBP were also studied. Addition of hydroxyl radical scavengers (isopropyl alcohol and terephthalic acid) was used to derive and compare the reaction constants of IBP in the three zones (the cavitation bubble, the bulk solution, and the supercritical interface) formed during ultrasonic irradiation. Some results are as follows: first, degradation pathways proceed through first-order kinetics in all experiments by ultrasonic irradiation; second, IBP degradation rate was faster at the lower IBP concentration of 0.05mM; third, additions of H2O2 from 0 to 5mM could accelerate the degradation of IBP. In addition, degradation of IBP by -radiolysis was also compared to the degradation by ultrasonic irradiation under the air-, nitrous oxide-, and argon-saturated conditions. Results indicated that IBP degradation per unit energy during ultrasonic irradiation was only about 0.01% of that in -radiolysis at both IBP concentrations. Pathways of IBP degradation in both ultrasonic irradiation and -radiolysis were proposed based on liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis, which mainly differed in the exclusive formation of two 5-membered ring products in -radiolysis.

Abstract:60Co γ-ray irradiation-induced degradation of diclofenac and effect of degradation paraments such as initial diclofenal concentration,radical promoters,radical scavengers,and coexisting substances in natural waters were investigated.Furthermore,the degradation results were evaluated in comparison with the results by dielectric barrier discharge,and the corresponding transformation pathways were proposed.The results showed when the initial concentration of diclofenac was 20.5,30.4 and 50.1 mg·L-1,the kinetics constant was 2.55,2.12 and 1.90 kGy-1.The results obtained with the additon of H2O2,CH3OH and thiourea suggest that degradation of diclofenac could take place via two pathways： oxidation by ·OH radicals and reduction by e-aq and H·.The commonly coexisting substances in natural waters,such as humic acid and NO-3,did not affect the degradation efficiency.Based on the intermediates identification,the transformation pathways were proposed to be initiated mainly by H·,e-aq and ·OH.

Abstract:Purpose Gamma ray irradiation is considered as an effective way to degrade diclofenac. However, due to the extensive coexisting substances in natural waters, the use of gamma ray irradiation for degradation is often influenced by multiple factors. The various factors that affect degradation efficiency, such as initial diclofenac concentration, initial pH, and the concentration of the additives including H 2 O 2 (·OH radical promoter), CH 3 OH (·OH radical scavenger), thiourea (·OH, H·, and e aq − scavenger), humic acid, and NO 3 − (coexisting substances in natural waters), are investigated. Furthermore, possible intermediate products are identified and corresponding transformation pathways are proposed. Methods Degradation experiments were performed in a 50-mL airtight Pyrex bottle loaded with 25 mL of diclofenac solutions at various initial concentrations of 20.5, 30.4, and 50.1 mg L −1 . The radiation doses were controlled at 0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 1.0 kGy. Results Study results indicate that: (1) The degradation efficiency of diclofenac decreases with the increase of its initial concentration. (2) The degradation efficiency is higher under acidic conditions than in neutral and alkaline media. (3) The results obtained when H 2 O 2 , CH 3 OH, and thiourea were added show that the degradation of diclofenac takes place via two pathways: oxidation by ·OH radicals and reduction by e aq − and H·. (4) The extensive coexisting substances in natural waters, such as humic acid and NO 3 − , do not affect the degradation efficiency. Based on the identified intermediates, it is proposed that transformation pathways are initiated mainly by H·, e aq − , and ·OH. Conclusion Gamma ray irradiation effectively degrades diclofenac.

Abstract:The degradation of 2,4-dichlorophoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) by ozonation combined with sonication(O 3/US) was investigated.Based on the authors’ first paper about the synergistic effect of ozone and US, this paper presents intermediate products of 2,4-D degradation.The main intermediates were 2,4- dichlorophenol, benzopuinone, hydroquinone and organic acids,such as maleic acid and oxalic acid and so on.In various experimental conditions, concentrations of main intermediates and chloride ion in the solution were determined to analyze reaction pathways, and the degradation mechanism was discussed.
A fundamental study on the degradation of paracetamol under single- and dual-frequency ultrasound

Abstract:The degradation of paracetamol, a widely found emerging pharmaceutical contaminant, was investigated under a wide range of single-frequency and dual-frequency ultrasonic irradiations. For single-frequency ultrasonic irradiation, plate transducers of 22, 98, 200, 300, 400, 500, 760, 850, 1000, and 2000 kHz were employed and for dual-frequency ultrasonic irradiation, the plate transducers were coupled with a 20 kHz ultrasonic horn in opposing configuration. The sonochemical activity was quantified using two dosimetry methods to measure the yield of HO• and H2O2 separately, as well as sonochemiluminescence measurement. Moreover, the severity of the bubble collapses as well as the spatial and size distribution of the cavitation bubbles were evaluated via sonoluminescence measurement. The paracetamol degradation rate was maximised at 850 kHz, in both single and dual-frequency ultrasonic irradiation. A synergistic index higher than 1 was observed for all degrading frequencies (200 - 1000 kHz) under dual-frequency ultrasound irradiation, showing the capability of dual-frequency system for enhancing pollutant degradation. A comparison of the results of degradation, dosimetry, and sonoluminescence intensity measurement revealed the stronger dependency of the degradation on the yield of HO• for both single and dual-frequency systems, which confirms degradation by HO• as the main removal mechanism. However, an enhanced degradation for frequencies higher than 500 kHz was observed despite a lower HO• yield, which could be attributed to the improved mass transfer of hydrophilic compounds at higher frequencies. The sonoluminescence intensity measurements showed that applying dual-frequency ultrasonic irradiation for 200 and 400 kHz made the bubbles larger and less uniform in size, with a portion of which not contributing to the yield of reactive oxidant species, whereas for the rest of the frequencies, dual-frequency ultrasound irradiation made the cavitation bubbles smaller and more uniform, resulting in a linear correlation between the overall sonoluminescence intensity and the yield of reactive oxidant species.

Abstract:The resistance of diclofenac (DCF), one of the most popular nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, to biodegradation processes and its abundance in the aquatic environment made it an environmental concern. Degradation by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation in the presence of various catalysts has possibility to eliminate DCF from water resources. In the present study, optimization of DCF degradation under UV light irradiation using biogenic selenium nanoparticles (Se NPs) in the presence of H2O2 (assisted by central composite design) in a photoreactor followed by identification of the produced metabolites (using GC-MS (EI) technique) was evaluated. To assess the influence of parameters on the UV/Se NPs/H2O2-assisted degradation efficiency of DCF, four main factors including light intensity (W/m2), Se NPs concentration (μg/mL), pH, and H2O2 concentration (mM) were chosen. Predicted values of degradation efficiency were found to be in good agreement with experimental values (Pre-R2 = 0.9982 and Adj-R2 = 0.9953). Optimization results showed that maximum degradation efficiency (97.43%) was achieved at the optimum conditions including Se NPs concentration of 32 μg/mL, UV light intensity of 30 W/m2, pH 7.5, and H2O2 concentration of 0.05 mM. 1-(2, 6-dichlorophenyl)-2-indolinone was found to be the main product among several peaks in the GC-MS chromatogram of the DCF treated sample.

Abstract:Many pharmaceutical compounds and metabolites are found in surface and ground waters suggesting their ineffective removal by conventional wastewater treatment technologies. Advanced oxidation/reduction processes (AO/RPs), which utilize free radical reactions to directly degrade chemical contaminants, are alternatives to traditional water treatment. This study reports the absolute rate constants for reaction of diclofenac sodium and model compound (2, 6-dichloraniline) with the two major AO/RP radicals: the hydroxyl radical (•OH) and hydrated electron (eaq−). The bimolecular reaction rate constants (M−1 s−1) for diclofenac for •OH was (9.29 ± 0.11) × 109, and for e−aq was (1.53 ± 0.03) ×109. To provide a better understanding of the decomposition of the intermediate radicals produced by hydroxyl radical reactions, transient absorption spectra are observed from 1 – 250 μs. In addition, preliminary degradation mechanisms and major products were elucidated using 60Co γ-irradiation and LC-MS. The toxicity of products was evaluated using luminescent bacteria. These data are required for both evaluating the potential use of AO/RPs for the destruction of these compounds and for studies of their fate and transport in surface waters where radical chemistry may be important in assessing their lifetime.

Abstract:Abstract: The photodegradation of meclofenamic acid (MCFA) was investigated using UV irradiation process. Parameters affecting the photodegradation process such as dissolved oxygen, reaction temperature, solution pH, initial MCFA concentration, humic acid, cations and anions were carried out. The intermediate products were identified by HPLC-MS analysis, and a tentative photodegradation pathway of MCFA was proposed. Results show that the photodegradation of MCFA can be modeled by the first-order kinetics. The photodegradation efficiency increases with the decreased concentration of humic acid or the decreased initial MCFA concentration, while the reaction temperature and the inorganic ions have no significant effect on the MCFA removal. It has found that the optimal initial solution pH for MCFA degradation is about 7.0. Finally, the HPLC-MS results reveal that the Cl atom in the MCFA molecule would form Cl–, followed by dechlorination, hydroxylation and cyclization of pentacyclic compounds.

Abstract:The degradation of phenol in aqueous solution by the dual-frequency ultrasound technology and the major affecting factors such as sound intensity, pH value of solution, initial concentration and medium temperature are studied.The results show that the dual-frequency ultrasound technology is superior to single frequency ultrasound technology in degradation of phenol.Within half an hour, the phenol removal rate by using dual-ultrasonic irradiation is obviously higher than the sum of the removal rates by using two separate single frequency ultrasonic irradiations.The synergetic effect of dual-frequency ultrasound is significant. In addition, adding Fenton reagent could accelerate the phenol removal rate.

Abstract:The treatment of waterborne micropollutants, such as diclofenac, presents a significant challenge to wastewater treatment plants due to their incomplete removal by conventional methods. Ozonation is an effective technique for the degradation of micropollutants. However, incomplete oxidation can lead to the formation of ecotoxic by-products that require a subsequent post-treatment step. In this study, we analyze the susceptibility of micropollutant ozonation products to enzymatic digestion with laccase from Trametes versicolor to evaluate the potential of enzymatic treatment as a post-ozonation step. The omnipresent micropollutant diclofenac is used as an example, and the enzymatic degradation kinetics of all 14 detected ozonation products are analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry (HPLC-HRMS) and tandem mass spectrometry (MS 2 ). The analysis shows that most of the ozonation products are responsive to chemo-enzymatic treatment but show considerable variation in enzymatic degradation kinetics and efficiencies. Mechanistic investigation of representative transformation products reveals that the hydroxylated aromatic nature of the ozonation products matches the substrate spectrum, facilitating their rapid recognition as substrates by laccase. However, after initiation by laccase, the subsequent chemical pathway of the enzymatically formed radicals determines the global degradability observed in the enzymatic process. Substrates capable of forming stable molecular oxidation products inhibit complete detoxification by oligomerization. This emphasizes that it is not the enzymatic uptake of the substrates but the channelling of the reaction of the substrate radicals towards the oligomerization of the substrate radicals that is the key step in the further development of an enzymatic treatment step for wastewater applications.

Abstract:The pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in aquatic environment have aroused more interest recently. Many of them are hard to degrade by the typical biological treatments. Diclofenac (DCF), as a significant anti-inflammatory drug, is a typical PPCP and widely existed in water environment. It is reported that DCF has adverse effects on aquatic organisms. This work aims to investigate the mechanism, kinetics and ecotoxicity assessment of DCF transformation initiated by O-3 in aqueous solution, and provide a solution to the degradation of DCF. The O-3 -initiated oxidative degradations of DCF were performed by quantum chemical calculations, including thirteen primary reaction pathways and subsequent reactions of the Criegee intermediates with H2O, NO and O-3. Based on the thermodynamic data, the kinetic parameters were calculated by the transition state theory (TST). The total reaction rate constant of DCF initiated by O-3 is 2.57 x 10(3) M-1 s(-1) at 298 K and 1 atm. The results show that the reaction rate constants have a good correlation with temperature. The acute and chronic toxicities of DCF and its degradation products were evaluated at three different trophic levels by the ECOSAR program. Most products are converted into less toxic or harmless products. Oxalaldehyde (P3) and N-(2,6-dichloropheny1)-2-oxoacetamide (P6) are still harmful to the three aquatic organisms, which should be paid more attention in the future.
Kinetics of Perfluorooctane Sulfonate and Perfluorooctanoate Degradation by Ultrasound Irradiation

Abstract:The feasibility of perfluorooctane sulfonate(PFOS)and perfluorooctanoate(PFOA)degradation by ultrasound irradiation was studied,and the effects of ultrasonic frequency,initial PFOS and PFOA concentration,initial pH,sorts of saturated gas,various organic and inorganic compounds coexisting with PFOS and PFOA,on the sonochemical decomposition rates were evaluated.The experimental results showed that PFOS and PFOA degradation followed the pseudo-first order kinetics in range of initial concentration 10—3650 μg·L-1.Complete sonolysis could be reached over a range of frequencies from 200 to 610 kHz and at 100 μg·L-1 of initial concentration.However,the degradation rate constants has an apparent maximum at 358 kHz,and at this frequency,the influences of initial concentration,initial pH and sorts of saturated gas on PFOS and PFOA degradation are great.Volatile aliphatic and aromatic organic components have effect on the degradation,while inorganic compound NaClO4 could accelerate the degradation rates.

Abstract:Diclofenac (DCF) is one of the most frequently detected pharmaceuticals in the aquatic environment. This study investigated the heterogeneous activation of Oxone by Co3O4 nanoparticles to eliminate DCF in aqueous phase. The performance of Co3O4/Oxone process was optimized by examining the influence of various parameters such as pH levels, Co3O4 dosage, oxone concentration, DCF initial concentration and the presence of inorganic anions on the degradation rate of DCF. The mechanism of the heterogeneous catalysis (Co3O4/Oxone) was also elucidated through comparing XRD patterns and Co 2p XPS spectra of Co3O4 nanoparticles before and after the degradation reaction of DCF by Co3O4/Oxone process.

Abstract:Diclofenac (DCF) degradation in aqueous solution under electron beam (EB) irradiation after nanobubbling treatment was studied and compared with treatments using nanobubbling or EB irradiation alone. It was found that the removal efficiency of DCF increased by increasing the adsorbed dose, and it depended on the initial concentration of DCF in solution, being higher for the lower concentrations. Furthermore, when using the nanobubbling treatment alone, about 16% of the DCF was removed from the aqueous solution due to the OH radicals generated during the process. On the other hand, using EB treatment at 0.5 kGy, the degradation of DCF increased from 36% to 51% when adding a nanobubbling pretreatment before the EB radiation. At higher doses (5 kGy), the degradation of DCF was 96% using EB radiation and 99% using nanobubbling before EB radiation, indicating that the nanobubbling effect was not synergistic. With an increase in the adsorbed doses, EB radiation seemed to play a more important role on the degradation of DCF, probably due to the reactive species generated. Moreover, the solutions treated with nanobubbling and EB radiation presented higher COD values and radiolytic by-products with aromatic rings with chlorine. This work can support the development of innovative strategies to treat municipal wastewaters using ionizing radiation technologies.

Abstract:The present study comparatively investigated the ultrasonic degradation of ketoprofen (KET) and paracetamol (PCT) in water. Ultrasonic irradiation at 555 kHz achieved rapid degradation of KET and PCT in water, the removal efficiencies of KET (2.5-80 μM) and PCT (2.5-80 μM) reached 87.7%-100% and 50.6%-86.9%, respectively, after 10 min of reaction under an ultrasonic power of 60 W. The degradation behaviors of both KET and PCT followed the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model. KET was eliminated faster than PCT because of its higher hydrophobicity. Acidic media favored ultrasonic degradation of KET and PCT. Organic compounds in water matrices exerted a great negative effect on the ultrasonic degradation rates of KET and PCT major by competing with target compounds with the generated radicals at the bubble/water interfacial region. The effects of anions were species dependent. The introduction of ClO4- and Cl- enhanced KET and PCT degradation to different extents, while the introduction of HCO3- posed a negative effect on both KET and PCT. KET and PCT degradation are accompanied by the generation of several transform intermediates, as identified via LC/MS/MS analysis, and corresponding reaction pathways have been proposed. A human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) toxicity evaluation indicated that ultrasonic treatment was capable of controlling the toxicity of KET or PCT degradation. Of note, the enhanced formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs), i.e., trichloromethane (TCM) and trichloronitromethane (TCNM), was found due to chlorination after ultrasonic treatment for both KET and PCT.

Abstract:This study presents an in-depth investigation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-assisted photocatalytic degradation of diclofenac (DCF) using N-doped TiO2 (N-TiO2) in a submerged membrane photocatalytic reactor (SMPR) under visible light. The technical achievements of this work include optimizing critical parameters such as solution pH, catalyst concentration, DCF concentration, and H2O2 concentration to maximize degradation efficiency. The results indicate that the optimal conditions for DCF removal were achieved at pH 6.5, [N-TiO2] of 1.0 g/L, DCF concentration of 20 mg/L, and H2O2 concentration of 21.75 mg/L. Under these conditions, DCF removal efficiency significantly improved from 42.21% in the absence of H2O2 to 79.55% with the addition of H2O2. This demonstrates the crucial role of H2O2 in enhancing photocatalytic degradation performance. Comparative analysis with other studies using UV light further emphasizes the efficacy of this visible light-driven process, which achieved competitive removal rates, demonstrating the potential of visible light and N-TiO2 as a sustainable solution for DCF degradation in wastewater. This research provides valuable insights into optimizing conditions for DCF degradation using N-TiO2 under visible light, offering potential applications for this photocatalytic process.

Abstract:This study explores the impact of different reactor/container materials, such as glass and plastic, on the degradation of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) using indirect ultrasonication in aquatic media. After subjecting the system to ultrasonication at 130 kHz with a 100 % effective power for 3.0 h, approximately 95 % and 46 % defluorination of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) were achieved in a glass reactor and a polypropylene (PP) reactor, respectively. Under optimal conditions, calorimetry power at the highest applied power averaged 51 ± 0.7 W/L for glass and 55.1 ± 1 W/L for PP. A similar trend was observed for the defluorination of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (6:2 FTS), and aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) containing a complex mixture of PFAS, indicating that the glass reactor exhibited higher efficiency in ultrasonic irradiation transportation. The kinetics of PFOA degradation also revealed that a glass beaker facilitated faster removal than PP. The reaction mechanism suggested that the primary pathway involved a pyrolytic reaction, while free radicals also played a contributing role. The effect of free radicals, especially hydroxyl radicals (OH) was approved by potassium iodide (KI) dosimetry as well as reaction between OH with benzoic acid (BA) as a radical scavenger. Overall, the findings unambiguously demonstrate how the reactor material affects the indirect ultrasonication of PFAS in an aqueous environment.
