Abstract:Neurotransmitter dopamine (DA) has been implicated in a variety of physiological and pathological processes, realizing its low detection limit and high sensitivity analysis is of great significance for early disease diagnosis. Herein, we propose a simple pyrolysis approach for dispersing Fe-sites onto the N-doped graphene support (denoted as Fe/N-GR) to construct an electrochemical biosensor for DA detection. The fully exposed Fe-sites guaranteed the well-defined active center for electrochemical oxidation of DA. The Fe/N-GR electrochemical biosensor achieves an ultra-low detection limit for DA of 27 pM with a linear range of 50 pM-15 nM. Specifically, the Fe/N-GR electrochemical biosensor exhibits favorable sensitivity and enzyme-level molecular identification ability in the selective detection of DA versus other typical redox-active interferents. What's more, the detection of dopamine in real human serum samples verifies the applicability of the developed sensor. Our results demonstrate a promising means of using fully exposed metal-site subnanometric catalysts for electrochemical sensing applications.

Abstract:An electrochemical sensor using a novel three dimensional (3D) ternary Pt nanodendrite/reduced graphene oxide/MnO2 nanoflower (Pt/RGO/MnO2) modified glassy carbon electrode was proposed for the selective and sensitive determination of dopamine (DA) in the presence of ascorbic acid (AA) and uric acid (UA). Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) were used to evaluate electrochemical behaviors of DA on the as-prepared electrode. The oxidation peak current of DA is linearly proportional to its concentration in the range from 1.5-215.56 mu M, with a detection limit of 0.1 mu M (at S/N = 3). Compared to bare RGO, Pt nanodendrite/RGO and MnO2 nanoflower modified electrodes, the 3D hierarchical ternary Pt/RGO/MnO2 composites displayed the highest electrocatalytic activity for the selective detection of DA. Moreover, the 3D Pt/RGO/MnO2 modified electrode can be reused with no obvious deterioration in the electrocatalytic performance. This work paves the way for developing a novel 3D nanostructure and offers new opportunities for improving the performance of electrochemical sensors with excellent sensitivity, repeatability and anti-interference.

Abstract:A three dimensional (3D) graphene assembly with hierarchical pores (3DHPG) was prepared by hydrothermal assembly and subsequent carbon-thermal reaction induced etching. The structure and component of the product were characterized by SEM, TEM, Raman, N2 adsorption-desorption, and XPS. The introduction of mesopores in basal plane of graphene in 3DHPG brings it more edge structure, more oxygen-containing defects, and larger surface area than typical 3D porous graphene foam (3DPG). Electrochemical study revealed the 3DHPG/GCE shows larger current response and improved mass transfer efficiency than 3DPG/GCE. Using dopamine as a model molecule, the 3DHPG/GCE shows much higher current response than that on 3DPG/GCE. The dopamine sensor based on 3DHPG/GCE display a linear range of 0.01- 300 μM and a detection limit of 3 nM. The linear range is wider than that on 3DPG (0.05-200 μM), and the detection limit is lower than that on 3DPG (20 nM). The improved sensing performance can be attributed to the hierarchically porous structure with large surface area, efficient mass transfer and enhanced catalysis due to the introduction of mesopores. The 3D hierarchically porous graphene assembly with unique structure and catalysis should be a promising material in electrochemical devices.

Abstract:Graphene, a single-atom-thick monolayer of sp(2) carbon atoms perfectly arranged in a honeycomb lattice, is an emerging sensing material because of its extraordinary properties, such as exceptionally high specific surface area, electrical conductivity, and electrochemical potential window. In this study, we demonstrate that three-dimensional (3D), macroporous, highly conductive, and monolithic graphene foam synthesized by chemical vapor deposition represents a novel architecture for electrochemical electrodes. Being employed as an electrochemical sensor for detection of dopamine, 3D graphene electrode exhibits remarkable sensitivity (619.6 μA mM(-1) cm(-2)) and lower detection limit (25 nM at a signal-to-noise ratio of 5.6), with linear response up to ∼25 μM. And the oxidation peak of dopamine can be easily distinguished from that of uric acid - a common interferent to dopamine detection. We envision that the graphene foam provides a promising platform for the development of electrochemical sensors as well as other applications, such as energy storage and conversion.

Abstract:Dopamine is an important neurotransmitter for organisms and affects their function, so monitoring and detecting dopamine levels is essential. Sensitivity and selectivity of electrochemical sensors for the detection of dopamine usually relies on hybrid nanocomposites. In this context, we designed a micro-regionally restricted hybrid nanocomposite by modulating the micro-nano structure. Using functional groups on nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (N-rGO) to restrict the random growth of tungsten disulfide nanosheets, we obtained a 2D layered material with bidirectional structural support to achieve high specific surface and high activity for application in robust and novel dopamine electrochemical sensors. A facile electrochemical sensor for dopamine detection was fabricated by modifying a screen-printed carbon electrode with the nanocomposite. The sensor exhibits excellent performance of dopamine detection in the wide range of 1 μmol/L100 μmol/L with a detection limit of 0.2 μmol/L and a high sensitivity of 0.56 μA/μmol/L. The optimized sensor shows a good selectivity, satisfactory long-term stability and reproducibility towards DA and a separation of peak potential of 142 mV with uric acid. In addition, the prepared sensor provides favorable recovery in human serum and artificial cerebrospinal solution (aSCF), indicating great potentials in electrochemical detection and biological sensing applications.

Abstract:Platinum wire microelectrodes generally exhibited properties of low sensitivity but are easily contaminated where it comes to dopamine detection. In this paper, a platinum wire modified with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was used to electrochemically detect dopamine in vivo. Electrochemical performances of microelectrodes (before and after surface modification) were investigated by impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The results showed that AuNPs/rGO composites significantly increase the electrode surface area and improve the electrocatalytic property of platinum wires. The modified electrodes exhibited excellent sensitivity for dopamine detection (LOD=16.57nM), as well as ascendant selectivity (simultaneous detection of ascorbic acid, dopamine, and uric acid), reproducibility (R.S.D.=3.98%), and stability (≫100 repetitive potential sweeps, 1-week lifespan). In vivo experiments showed that the proposed AuNPs/rGO electrode was also capable of detecting dopamine in complex physiological environments, particularly in the striatum of anesthetized rats. Hence, the proposed electrodes provided a potential application in in vivo multiplexing neurotransmitter detection in further research.
Three-dimensional Graphene Oxide Foams Loaded with AuPd Alloy: a Sensitive Electrochemical Sensor for Dopamine

Abstract:The authors describe a chemical sensor for dopamine (DA). It is based on the use of three-dimensional graphene oxide (3D rGO) loaded with varying amounts of AuPd bimetallic nanoparticles (3D rGO/AuPd NPs). The 3D rGO acts as an effective substrate providing a large surface area and allowing fast electron transfer. The interaction between 3D rGO and surface AuPd NPs increases the activity of the sensing material. These composites were fabricated as the active layer on an indium tin oxide for DA determination. The electrode showed the best performance at a working potential of 0.25 V (vs. the saturated calomel reference electrode) and a scan rate of 100 mVs−1. The best electrode exhibits good sensitivity (4670 μA·mM−1·cm−2), a wide linear response (0.5 μM to 135 μM), and a low detection limit (0.2 μM). It is also selective, easily reproducible, and stable. It was applied to the determination of DA in spiked human serum and in clinical DA hydrochloride injections. The excellent performance of this electrode is attributed to the efficient electron transfer and large specific surface area of 3D rGO and to the high electrocatalytic activity of AuPd NPs due to the synergistic effect between the 3D rGO substrate and the AuPd alloy NPs.

Abstract:Graphene was synthesized chemically by Hummers and Offeman method and the graphene-modified electrode was applied in selective determination of dopamine with a linear range from 5μM to 200μM in a large excess of ascorbic acid. Selective detection was realized in completely eliminating ascorbic acid, different from the methods based on the potential separations. π–π stacking interaction between dopamine and graphene surface may accelerate the electron transfer whereas weaken the ascorbic acid oxidation on this graphene-modified electrode. The resulted graphene-modified electrode also showed a better performance than multi-walled carbon nanotubes-modified electrode. The phenomena were considered from the elusive two-dimensional structure and unique electronic properties of graphene.

Abstract:The authors describe a hybrid nanocomposite consisting of polypyrrole (PPy) nanospheres doped with p-toluenesulfonic acid (p-TSA) and deposited on sheets of reduced graphene oxide (rGO). The rGO sheets oxide were first coated with Fe3O4 particles, and pyrrole was then polymerized on their surface to obtain architecture of the type PPy/Fe3O4/rGO. Addition of p-TSA during polymerization leads to the formation of p-TSA-doped PPy to obtain doped-PPy/Fe3O4/rGO. The resulting nanocomposite was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, FTIR, X-ray diffraction spectrometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The nanocomposite was placed on a glassy carbon electrode to give an electrochemical sensor for dopamine (DA) that has a fairly low operational voltage (0.3–0.6 V vs. SCE), a wide linear range (7.0 nM–2.0 μM), a low detection limit (2.33 nM), and good selectivity for DA over ascorbic acid and uric acid. It gave satisfactory results in the determination of DA in spiked samples of urine and serum.

Abstract:In this paper a nanocomposite prepared by graphene (GR) and SnO2 nanosheets was used to modify a N-hexylpyridinium hexafluorophosphate based carbon ionic liquid electrode. The presence of GR–SnO2 nanocomposite on the electrode surface exhibited synergistic effects to improve the electrochemical performance of the modified electrode. Electrochemical behaviors of dopamine (DA) on the electrode were evaluated by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. The results indicated that the GR–SnO2 nanocomposite modified electrode displayed high electrocatalytic activity to the oxidation of DA with the increase of the redox peak currents and the decrease of the peak-to-peak separation. Under the selected conditions the oxidation peak current was proportional to the DA concentration in the range from 0.5 to 500.0μmol/L with a detection limit of 0.13μmol/L (S/N=3). The modified electrode showed excellent selectivity and sensitivity even in the presence of high concentration of uric acid. The proposed method was applied to determine DA content in real samples with satisfactory results.

Abstract:The nanocomposite of an electron-deficient flat tetrakis-(ethoxycarbonyl) porphyrin copper(II) (Cu-TECP) and reduced grapheme oxide (RGO) was prepared and used for electrochemical detection of dopamine (DA). The prepared nanocomposite was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Electrochemical studies of the modified glass carbon electrode (GCE) were carried out by the cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammograms (DPV) methods. The RGO/Cu-TECP/GCE exhibited enhanced electrocatalytic activity towards the detection of dopamine (DA). The detection limit was 0.58 mu M, while the linear range was from 2 to 200 mM (R-2 = 0.997).

Abstract:A dopamine electrochemical sensor was easily fabricated by modifying the glassy carbon electrode with well-dispersed graphene and molybdenum disulfide hybrids. Graphene had the ability to enhance the electrochemical response intensity and molybdenum disulfide served as an amplification element when added to the graphene layer. The modification activity was investigated with the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technique. A highly sensitive electrochemical method was developed to detect dopamine based on the strong enhancement effect of graphene-molybdenum disulfide. The oxidation peak currents varied linearly with the addition of dopamine over the range from 5.0×10−8 to 1.0×10−5molL−1, and the lower detection limit was 7.13×10−9molL−1 (S/N=3). This work demonstrated a simple, efficient design for a chemical sensor that employs graphene-molybdenum disulfide for dopamine detection.

Abstract:Fe 3 O 4 with different shapes are reported herein to modify the glassy carbon electrode and then they are used to detect dopamine (DA), a member of the catecholamine and phenethylamine families. Cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, differential pulse voltammetry and linear sweep voltammetry are all chosen to characterise the sensor's performance to DA. Under the optimal conditions, the modified sensor (N-rGO/Fe 3 O 4 NRs/GCE) had some good performance, followed as short response time (∼3 s), wide linear range (0.2–176 μM), low detection limit (0.05 μM, S/N = 2), good stability and reproducibility. The fabricated DA biosensor was further investigated for DA determination in human blood serum, suggesting its great potential in biological samples.

Abstract:The development of a miniaturized and low-cost platform for the simultaneous and high-sensitive detection of the nervous system metabolites has gained great interest for early diagnosis and prognostic monitoring of some diseases. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) interpenetrating hydrogel ink synthesized through a simple hydro-thermal assembly way was utilized for the sensitive detection of dopamine released from neural cells in vivo. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were utilized as the structural framework, while reduced graphene nanosheets were employed as the outer covering, resulting in the formation of a "skeleton/skin" structure. The attachment of hydrophilic IL molecules onto the graphene nanosheets confers distinctive hydrophilic traits on the resulting nanocomposite material. Consequently, this facilitates its effortless conversion into freestanding paper-like material via printing. The modified electrode was proved to be efficient in electrochemical detection of dopamine by means of DPV, despite the existence of interfering substances like ascorbic and uric acid. With a sensitivity of 41.86 mu A mu M-1 cm-2 and a low detection limit of 2 nM (S/N = 3), the paper electrode exhibited a linear response ranging from 0.01 to 50 mu M. Furthermore, the rGO-CNT-IL was used to determine dopamine levels in the neural cells. The modified paper electrode can also be potentially applied for further drug detection, health monitoring and other biological applications.
Selective and Sensitive Determination of Dopamine by Composites of Polypyrrole and Graphene Modified Electrodes

Abstract:A novel method is developed to fabricate the polypyrrole (PPy) and graphene thin films on electrodes by electrochemical polymerization of pyrrole with graphene oxide (GO) as a dopant, followed by electrochemical reduction of GO in the composite film. The composite of PPy and electrochemically reduced graphene oxide (eRGO)-modified electrode is highly sensitive and selective toward the detection of dopamine (DA) in the presence of high concentrations of ascorbic acid (AA) and uric acid (UA). The sensing performance of the PPy/eRGO-modified electrode is investigated by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), revealing a linear range of 0.1-150 μM with a detection limit of 23 nM (S/N = 3). The practical application of the PPy/eRGO-modified electrode is successfully demonstrated for DA determination in human blood serum.
Application of Graphene/Tetraphenylboron-Dopamine Modified Graphite Electrode for Selective Determination of Dopamine

Abstract:A novel electrochemical sensor based on graphene and tetraphenylboron-dopamine electroactive material was developed for determination of dopamine which is correlative to some neurogenic disease. Graphene was synthesized by one-step liquid-phase exfoliation of graphite and the tetraphenylboron-dopamine was prepared by precipitation reaction on formation-of ion association complex. The resultant electrode showed better performance in selectivity, sensitivity and narrow potential window comparing with bare graphite electrode and graphite electrode modified by tetraphenylboron-dopamine. In the presence of 1000-fold concentration interference-of ascorbic acid and uric acid, the linear range for dopamine was successfully determined from 1 x 10(-4) to 1 x 10(-10) mol/L with a correlation coefficient of 0.9969. The detection limit was estimated to be 7.39 x 10(-11) mol/L in 3 of signal to noise ratio (S/N = 3). According with successive measurements in 10 times, the relative standard deviation of all results for graphene/tetraphenylhoron-dopamine /graphite electrode still kept in 1.83 %. Moreover, the graphene/tetraphenylboron-dopamine /graphite electrode could be stored for 30 days in 4 degrees C without sharply decease Of its electroactivity. All results clearly prove that this modified electrode is sensitive way for selective determination of dopamine.

Abstract:In this study, we developed and characterized a new dopamine (DA) sensor based on the reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-carbon dot composite film with high sensitivity, nice specificity and good stability. The carbon dots (CDs) had carboxyl groups with negative charge, which not only provided good stability, but also enabled interaction with amine functional groups in DA through electrostatic interaction to enhance the specificity of DA with high specificity, and the interaction and electron communication between rGO and DA can be further strengthened via pi-pi stacking force. Under optimal conditions, the rGO-CDs electrode (GCE) showed better electrochemical response towards the detection of DA than the bare GCE, GO/GCE and CDs/GCE. A linear relationship between the oxidation peak current of DA and its concentration could be obtained in a range from 0.01000 mu M to 450.0 mu M with the limit of detection as 1.5 nM (3S/N). Furthermore, rGO-CDs/GCE exhibited good ability to suppress the background current from large excess ascorbic acid (AA) and uric acid (UA). Meanwhile, the rGO-CDs/GCE also was applied to the detection of DA content in the injection of DA with satisfactory results, and the biosensor could keep its activity for at least a month. Compared with the bare Au electrode, OPPy/GE/Au electrode exhibits much stronger electroactivity for DA, as well as intense electrostatic inhibition towards the oxidation of AA at the same time. Such a compatible with mass production and low-cost fabrication of on-chip DA sensor presented a sensitivity of 1.1 μA/μM with a correlation coefficient of 0.99. These properties make the prepared biosensor suitable for the analysis of trace detection of DA in most clinical preparations with a high sensitivity.
