Abstract:C3N4/TiO2 hybrid photocatalysts with highly enhanced photocatalytic performance were prepared by a facile ball milling method. A layered structure of g-C3N4 was formed on the surface of TiO2. The mechanochemical process can promote the dispersion of C3N4 on the surface of TiO2 particles, to form a single layer hybrid structure and a multi-layer core-shell structure. The photocatalytic activities of C3N4/TiO2 under visible and UV light irradiation were 3.0 and 1.3 times those of pure g-C3N4 and TiO2, respectively. Under visible light and UV irradiation, the photocurrent response was up to 2.5 times and 1.5 times as high as that of the pure TiO2 and C3N4, respectively. The evident performance enhancement of g-C3N4-TiO2 was mainly attributed to high separation and migration efficiency of electron-hole pairs.

Abstract:N-doped ZnO/g-C3N4 composites have been successfully prepared via a facile and cost-effective sol-gel method. The nanocomposites were systematically characterized by XRD, FE-SEM, HRTEM, FT-IR, XPS, and UV-vis DRS. The results indicated that compared with the pure N-doped ZnO, the absorption edge of binary N-doped ZnO/g-C3N4 shifted to a lower energy with increasing the visible-light absorption and improving the charge separation efficiency, which would enhance its photocatalytic activity. Compared with the pure g-C3N4, ZnO, N-doped ZnO and the composite ZnO/g-C3N4, the as-prepared N-doped ZnO/g-C3N4 exhibits a greatly enhanced photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue and phenol under visible-light irradiation. Meanwhile, N-doped ZnO/g-C3N4 possesses a high stability. Finally, a proposed mechanism for N-doped ZnO/g-C3N4 is also discussed. The improved photocatalysis can be attributed to the synergistic effect between N-doped ZnO and g-C3N4, including the energy band structure and enhanced charge separation efficiency.

Abstract:The g-C3N4-ZnO composite photocatalysts with various weight percents of ZnO were synthsized by a simple calcination process. The photocatalysts were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), UV-vis diffuse reflection spectroscopy (UV-vis), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The PXRD and HR-TEM results show that the composite materials consist of hexagonal wurzite phase ZnO and g-C3N4. The solid-state UV-vis diffuse reflection spectra show that the absorption edge of the composite materials shifts toward the lower energy region and to longer wavelengths in comparison with pure ZnO and g-C3N4. Remarkably, the photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4-ZnO composites has been demonstrated, via photodegradation of Methyl Orange (MO) and p-nitrophenol experiments. The photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4-ZnO for photodegradation of Methyl Orange and p-nitrophenol under visible light irradiation was increased by over 3 and 6 times, respectively, to be much higher than that of single-phase g-C3N4, clearly demonstrating a synergistic effect between ZnO and g-C3N4. The concentrations of Zn2+ in g-C3N4-ZnO system after a photocatalytic reaction at various reaction times were found to be much lower than those for a ZnO system under the same reaction conditions, indicating that the g-C3N4-ZnO composite possesses excellent long-term stability for a photocatalytic reaction in aqueous solutions. Furthermore, a synergistic photocatalysis mechanism between ZnO and g-C3N4 was proposed based on the photodegradation results. Such obviously improved performance of g-C3N4-ZnO can be ascribed mainly to the enhancement of electron-hole separations at the interface of ZnO and g-C3N4.
Constructing Mesoporous G-C3n4/zno Nanosheets Catalyst for Enhanced Visible-Light Driven Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:Novel mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) was synthesized via one-step thermal condensation of ethyl cellulose (EC) and urea mixture. Morphology, crystal structure and charge carrier lifetime of the composites were controlled by tuning the amount of EC. The optimized 5 wt% EC/g-C3N4 (OEC/g-C3N4), which showed the highest surface area and longest carrier lifetime, were facilely incorporated into the ZnO nanosheet by the hydrothermal method as catalyst for methylene blue degradation under visible-light irradiation. The optimized photocatalytic activity of OEC/g-C3N4/ZnO nanosheets at a weight ratio of 3% under visible-light irradiation is almost 8.5 times higher than that of ZnO nanosheets. This enhancement in performance is mainly attributed to OEC/g-C3N4 incorporation, which broadens the light absorption and facilitates the separation and transfer of photogenerated electron hole pairs at the interface. In addition, this method is expected to be extended to other EC/g-C3N4 loaded materials.

Abstract:Visible-light-driven WO3/g-C3N4 composites photocatalysts were synthesized via a facile one-step simultaneously heating procedure with urea as the main precursor. These prepared catalyst samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N-2 adsorption, ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflection spectroscopy (UV-vis), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), photoluminescence (PL) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The photocatalytic activity of the WO3/g-C3N4 composites was evaluated by the photo-degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light irradiation. The results indicated that the composites with 25"wt.% WO3 content exhibited highest photocatalytic activity compared to pure WO3, bare g-C3N4 and other WO3/g-C3N4 composites. The favorable photocatalytic activity of WO3/g-C3N4 composites was mainly attributed to the excellent surface properties, enhanced visible-light absorption and the desirable band positions. A possible Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism was proposed based on structure and electrochemical characterizations results, which can well explain the enhanced migration rate of photogenerated electrons and holes in WO3/g-C3N4 heterojunctions. Abstract:A ZnO photocatalyst was hybridized with graphite-like C3N4 via a monolayer-dispersed method. After hybridization with C3N4, the photocurrent of ZnO was enhanced by 5 times under UV irradiation and a photocurrent under visible light irradiation was observed. The photocatalytic activity of C3N4/ZnO under UV irradiation was increased by 3.5 times, the visible light photocatalytic activity was generated and the photocorrosion of ZnO was suppressed completely after ZnO was hybridized with C3N4. The enhancement in performance and photocorrosion inhibition under UV irradiation was induced by the high separation efficiency of photoinduced holes from ZnO to the HOMO of C3N4. Under visible light irradiation, the electron excited from the HOMO to the LUMO of C3N4 could directly inject into the CB of ZnO, making C3N4/ZnO present visible light photocatalytic activity. The optimum synergetic effect of C3N4/ZnO was found at a weight ratio of 3%, which corresponded to a monolayer dispersion of C3N4 on the surface of ZnO.

Abstract:The preparation of high specific area (86.5 m2/g) ZnO nanospheres with good photocatalytic efficiency via a simple, green and efficient mechanochemical method was reported in this work. The products were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, BET and UV–Vis. The ball milling parameters were improved to reduce the agglomeration hazard during the ball milling process, and the specific surface area, band gap and photocatalytic efficiency were investigated in relation to ball milling time. Our study developed the opportunity for the low-cost and facile synthesis of a high specific surface area photocatalyst on a large scale for future industrial applications.

Abstract:g‐C3N5 has wide‐ranging applications in photocatalysis owing to its two‐dimensional layered structure, large surface area, and small band gap. In this study, the surface of g‐C3N5 was subjected to inorganic acid modification and combined with BiOCl to form a heterojunction, effectively improving the photocatalytic activity of the material. The rates of degradation of rhodamine B and ciprofloxacin by the 15‐C3N5‐BiOCl composite photocatalyst were 22.2 and 20.7 times higher, respectively, than those of degradation by g‐C3N5. This was attributed to the Z‐type heterojunction formed by g‐C3N5 and BiOCl, which significantly improved the efficiency of photogenerated electron–hole pairs separation and broadened the optical response range. The preparation of novel photocatalysts has broad application prospects in the treatment of organic pollutants in water.

Abstract:In this work, highly efficient g-C3N4/Bi4O7 heterojunction photocatalysts have been successfully fabricated by a facile method. Compared with the bare photocatalysts, the obtained g-C3N4/Bi4O7 hybrid photocatalysts exhibited efficient degradation activity toward methylene blue (MB), phenol, rhodamine B (RhB), and bisphenol A (BPA) under visible light irradiation. The influences of different g-C3N4 contents on the photocatalytic efficiency of the hybrid photocatalysts have been investigated. The results revealed that the g-C3N4/Bi4O7 with g-C3N4 mass ratio of 30% exhibited the best photocatalytic activity. The activity enhancement should be ascribed to the improved visible light adsorption as well as the effective Z-scheme charge transfer according to the energy band theory. The UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) shows that the absorption edge of g-C3N4 move towards longer wavelength with the increment of Bi4O7 component. The strong connection between g-C3N4 and Bi4O7 was investigated using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Subsequently, the effective Z-scheme charge transfer has also been verified by using transient photocurrent measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Controlled experiments proved that active species of O2- and h+ were produced in the degradation system, which played the major role in the degradation of MB. A possible Z-scheme degradation mechanism over g-C3N4/Bi4O7 hybrid photocatalysts was proposed.

Abstract:We examine the photocatalytic activity (PCA) of ZnO/graphitic carbon nitride g-C3N4 (g-CN) composite material for methylene blue (MB) degradation under visible-light irradiation (VLI). The polymeric g-CN materials were fabricated by the pyrolysis of urea and thiourea. More importantly, ZnO/g-CN nanostructured composites were fabricated by adding the different mounts (60, 65, 70, and 75 wt.%) of g-CN into ZnO via the simple hydrothermal process. Among fabricated composites, the 75% ZnO/g-CN nanocomposites displayed a superior PCA for MB degradation, which were ~three-fold an enhancement over the pure ZnO nanoparticles. The fabricated materials have been evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-Vis, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and electron microscopy. More importantly, the photodegradation of MB could get 98% in ZnO/g-CN could be credited to efficient separation of photo-induced charge carriers between ZnO and g-CN. Also, the recycling efficiency of the as-prepared composites was studied for multiple cycles, which shows that the photocatalysts are stable and suitable to carry out photocatalytic degradation in the logistic mode. Additionally, the probable photocatalytic mechanism has also discussed. The synthetic procedure of ZnO/g-CN based materials can be used in numerous fields such as environmental and in energy storage applications.

Tailored Polymeric Carbon Nitride Coupled with Bi2O3 for Constructing Z‐Scheme Heterojunction with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:The great demand for visible‐light‐induced catalysts with high photocatalytic performance has stimulated extensive interest in constructing g‐C3N4‐based Z‐scheme heterojunctions. In this research work, we constructed the g‐C3N4/Bi2O3 Z‐scheme heterojunction by precipitation‐hydrothermal method, and confirmed the close contact interface between g‐C3N4 and Bi2O3 to form the heterojunction by various characterization techniques, which facilitates the efficient separation of photogenerated electrons‐holes. Compared to pure g‐C3N4 and Bi2O3, the g‐C3N4/Bi2O3‐1 composite exhibited a transient photocurrent response approximately 7 and 5 times higher than that of g‐C3N4 and Bi2O3, respectively, with stronger visible photocatalytic activity and degraded 99.8% methylene blue within 75 min. Ion trapping experiments showed that •OH free radical had the greatest effect on the degradation of methylene blue, while •O2‐ and h+ had less effect. According to the experimental test results, the possible photocatalytic degradation mechanism of g‐C3N4/Bi2O3‐1 catalyst was proposed. This study provides a new avenue for the development of novel g‐C3N4‐based Z heterojunction materials with application value.

Abstract:N-doped ZnO/g-C3N4 hybrid core-shell nanoplates have been successfully prepared via a facile, cost-effective and eco-friendly ultrasonic dispersion method for the first time. HRTEM studies confirm the formation of the N-doped ZnO/g-C3N4 hybrid core-shell nanoplates with an average diameter of 50 nm and the g-C3N4 shell thickness can be tuned by varying the content of loaded g-C3N4. The direct contact of the N-doped ZnO surface and g-C3N4 shell without any adhesive interlayer introduced a new carbon energy level in the N-doped ZnO band gap and thereby effectively lowered the band gap energy. Consequently, the as-prepared hybrid core-shell nanoplates showed a greatly enhanced visible-light photocatalysis for the degradation of Rhodamine B compare to that of pure N-doped ZnO surface and g-C3N4. Based on the experimental results, a proposed mechanism for the N-doped ZnO/g-C3N4 photocatalyst was discussed. Interestingly, the hybrid core-shell nanoplates possess high photostability. The improved photocatalytic performance is due to a synergistic effect at the interface of the N-doped ZnO and g-C3N4 including large surface-exposure area, energy band structure and enhanced charge-separation properties. Significantly, the enhanced performance also demonstrates the importance of evaluating new core-shell composite photocatalysts with g-C3N4 as shell material.
Light-assisted preparation of heterostructured g-C3N4/ZnO nanorods arrays for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen performance

Abstract:The type II heterostructured g-C3N4/ZnO nanorods arrays (NRAs) with intimate interface connection were successfully synthesized via a light-assisted method for photocatalytic H2 production. Such type-II heterojunction between g-C3N4 and ZnO not only promotes the charge separation and transport but also extends light absorption to the visible light region. In addition, the high physicochemical stability of g-C3N4 layer keeps ZnO from photocorrosion during the reaction. Consequently, the heterostructured g-C3N4/ZnO NRAs demonstrate enhanced photocatalytic H2 performance. In particular, the highest photocatalytic activity enhancement of g-C3N4/ZnO heterostructure is 3.3 times that of ZnO NRAs with a good stability of 85% retention rate after 5 cycles. Our work here presents an effective strategy to construct heterojunction between g-C3N4 and metal oxide semiconductors for significantly enhanced photocatalytic H2 production.

Abstract:g-C3N4@CdS nanocomposites with different mass ratios were successfully fabricated by the precipitation method. Different ratios were investigated for their influence on the microstructure, photoelectrochemical, and photocatalytic properties of the as-prepared samples. The experimental results show that g-C3N4@CdS nanocomposites are hexagonal structures with good crystallization, and g-C3N4 wraps one-dimensional CdS nanorods. g-C3N4@CdS nanocomposites exhibit excellent visible-light absorption. The PL spectra, transient photocurrent response, and EIS measurements of g-C3N4@CdS composites indicate that heterojunctions accelerate the separation and migration of photo-generated electron-hole pairs and inhibit the recombination of photo-generated carriers. Under simulated sunlight irradiation, the g-C3N4@CdS photocatalyst accelerates the redox reaction and improves photocatalytic efficiency to degrade MO, compared to pure photocatalysts. g-C3N4@ CdS photocatalysts exhibit good degradation efficiency and excellent recyclability. In addition, O-center dot(2)- and( center dot)OH play a key role in the photocatalytic degradation process.

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) fabricated from different precursors exhibits unique microstructures and photocatalytic performance under visible light. Herein, we synthesized five different microstructures of g-C3N4 by the thermal poly condensation method using guanidine hydrochloride, melamine, urea, dicyandiamide and thiourea as the precursors. The results indicated that g-C3N4 prepared from urea precursor (UCN) has a nanostructure, porous layered structure, large specific surface area, and high separation efficiency of photo generated hole-electron pairs, which showed the best photocatalytic activity among all of the as-prepared samples. As for the lowest cost among the above five precursors, urea is an ideal candidate material for preparing g-C3N4 photocatalyst for a huge potential of wide industrial applications. In addition, Pt or Ni were used as the co-catalyst and loaded onto the g-C3N4 surface for photocatalytic hydrogen production. In comparison with noble metal Pt co-catalyst, Ni co-catalyst is inexpensive and has a significant effect o enhancing the photocatalytic activity under visible light. Therefore, Ni exhibits a considerable prospect to replace noble metal co-catalysts in the photocatalytic reactions.

2D/3D Interface Engineering: Direct Z-scheme G-C3n4/ymno3 Heterojunction for Reinforced Visible-Light Photocatalytic Oxidation

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a two-dimensional (2D) photocatalyst, but it appears a mediocre catalytic property due to the recombination of charge carriers. Constructing heterojunctions can boost the separation and suppress the recombination of photo-generated electron–hole pairs. For the conventional Type-II heterojunction, the oxidation ability is significantly reduced due to the decreasing of band gap. We try to maintain its oxidation capacity and promote the artificial bandgap by tailoring a Z-scheme heterojunction through interface engineering. Herein, we grafted different proportions of YMnO3 3D-nanoparticles onto g-C3N4 2D-nanosheets. This special 2D/3D mixed-dimensional nanocomposite exhibits efficient charge carrier transport performance according to the electrochemistry and photocurrent measurement. The outstanding photocatalytic oxidation ability can be verified by the rate of Rhodamine B degradation, which is 3.8 and 2.3 times of YMnO3 and g-C3N4, respectively. Theoretical calculation, active group capture experiments and electron spin resonance indicate the energy band position and the reactive groups (superoxide radicals and holes). The optimized g-C3N4/YMnO3 heterojunction utilizes the interfacial synergistic effect to achieve a composition of vigorous oxidizing ability and outstanding visible light harvesting. This work will pave a promising access for mechanism and interface engineering of other g-C3N4-based Z-scheme heterojunctions.

Abstract:The construction of heterojunction composite material can take advantage of the complementary advantages of MOF and g-C3N4 to make it possibly have superior performance to its constituent component in terms of the separation of photogenerated carrier, visible light absorption, and the number of active sites, making it a potential photocatalytic candidate material. In this work, a sulfur doped g-C3N4/MIL-101(Fe) Z-scheme heterostructure was successfully fabricated using a facile way integrated hydrothermal and ball-milling methods, of which S-doped g-C3N4 nanosheets were assembled on the surface of MIL-101(Fe) octahedra. By means of characterization of microstructure, chemical states, adsorption and specific surface area, optical and photoelectrochemical properties, and the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible light, the photocatalytic activities were systematically evaluated. Furthermore, the photocatalytic mechanism therein was clarified through the electron paramagnetic resonance (ESR) measurements and the active radical capture experiments. It was found that the introduction of a certain amount of sulfur doped g-C3N4 nanosheets on the surface of MIL-101(Fe) octahedra efficiently improved the separation and migration rate of photo-induced carriers, consequently resulted in a boost of photocatalytic efficiency for methylene blue (MB) degradation under visible light irradiation and full spectra. Among all photocatalysts MCN-2 presented the best photocatalytic activity for photodegradation of MB. A two-fold increasement was approved compared to bare MIL-101(Fe) under visible light. The superior performance arises from the Z-scheme heterojunction formed between MIL-101(Fe) and g-C3N4 with favorably matched band energy levels, enabling the separation and fast transfer of the photogenerated carriers. This work provides an effective way for constructing novel photocatalytic systems with efficient activity for refractory pollutant removal.

Abstract:A heterostructure material g-C3N4/SrZrO3 was simply prepared by grinding and heating the mixture of SrZrO3 and g-C3N4. The morphology and structure of the synthesized photocatalysts were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and infrared spectra. It showed visible light absorption ability and much higher photocatalytic activity than that of pristine g-C3N4 or SrZrO3. Under the optimal reaction conditions, the hydrogen production efficiency is 1222 μmol·g−1·h−1 and 34 μmol·g−1·h−1 under ultraviolet light irradiation and visible light irradiation, respectively. It is attributed to the higher separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons and holes between the cooperation of g-C3N4 and SrZrO3, which is demonstrated by photocurrent measurements.

Abstract:Heterojunction photocatalysts g-C3N4/BiPO4 with varying loadings of g-C3N4 were synthesized by ball milling process in different time, the synthetic method of which was a simple, rapid, economical, and easy-controlled way. The evaluation for the performance of as-prepared g-C3N4/BiPO4 was conducted by the degradation of tetracycline (TC) in stimulated sunlight condition. The superior performance was achieved from g-C3N4/BiPO4 heterostructure photocatalyst with 5 wt% g-C3N4 and ball milling time of 18 h, which could decompose 97% TC after 120 min illumination. The enhanced photocatalytic activity could be ascribed to the synergistic effects, including changes in morphology and structure after ball milling, increased specific surface area, outstanding visible-light absorption, and efficient separation of electron-hole pairs. The possible degradation mechanism was clarified by semiconductor energy band theory. This work may present a novel strategy for preparing heterojunction photocatalysts with high photoactivity and provide the analysis method of mechanism by combining theoretical calculations and experimental observations.
