Abstract:Here we developed a novel CO2-responsive pillararene-based molecular recognition motif established from a water-soluble pillar[5]arene and an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS). The inclusion complex acted as a supramolecular amphiphile and self-assembled into spherical bilayer vesicles as confirmed by DLS, SEM, and TEM experiments. These vesicles were disrupted upon bubbling N-2 or adding much more SDS to eliminate the inclusion complex. The assembly and disassembly of vesicles were successfully employed in gas and surfactant triggered releases of calcein, a water-soluble dye.

Abstract:An AB-type heteroditopic monomer was prepared by incorporating a dialkylammonium salt into a copillar[5]arene prepared from the co-oligomerization of 1-(10-bromodecyloxy)-4-methoxybenzene and 1,4-dimethoxybenzene. Based on the self-assembly of this new monomer in chloroform, a linear supramolecular polymer formed. The formation of the supramolecular polymer was characterized by various techniques including H-1 NMR, NOESY, DOSY, specific viscosity and SEM. This supramolecular polymer was anion responsive, since the self-assembly of the monomers could be destroyed by the addition of chloride anions. This study provides an efficient and convenient strategy to control the formation of supramolecular polymers.

Abstract:A strategy to prepare liquid anion-functionalized pillar[5]arene by incorporating a large asymmetrical cation on the rims was proposed. This kind of pillar[5]arene-based ionic liquid showed high thermal stability, good CO2 absorption capacity, and excellent reversibility. In contrast with the neutral pillar[5]arene and the noncyclic monomeric analogue, pillar[5]arene-based ionic liquid exhibited significantly enhanced CO2 absorption capacity. Through a combination of absorption experiments, spectroscopic investigations, and quantum chemical calculations, the results indicated that the increased capacity originated from multiple-site interactions between CO2 and the carboxylic anion, which was enhanced by the cavity of pillar[5]arene. This work provided an efficient methodology for preparing a liquid macrocyclic host as well as improving gas absorption.

Abstract:An amphiphilic pillar[5]arene was made. It could self-assemble to form vesicles and multiwalled microtubes in water. Dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and UV-vis and FTIR spectroscopy were employed to characterize its self-assembly process and the resultant assemblies. The vesicles could encapsulate calcein within their interiors under neutral conditions and release it in response to a decrease in pH. The microtubes, which have primary amine groups on their surfaces, could adsorb TNT through donor-acceptor interactions.

Abstract:Pillar[ n ]arenes primarily comprise pillar[5]arenes and pillar[6]arenes, which belong to the new class of supramolecular macrocyclic hosts. Pillar[ n ]arenes have aroused wide attention because of their highly rigid and symmetrical architectures, controllable cavity size, and wide applications in a wide variety of areas. Although pillar[6]arene is difficult to synthesize, numerous studies have been conducted on it. In this review, the strategies to synthesize and functionalize pillar[6]arenes are investigated systematically. In addition, their host-guest properties in organic solvents and in aqueous solution are described. Moreover, pillar[6]arenes applied in different fields ( e.g. , molecular recognition, drug release, cancer therapy, and gas separation) are clarified. Hopefully, this study is capable of arousing more attention from increasing scientists to study large-cavity pillar[ n ]arenes.

Abstract:In this letter, we report our fabrication of a three-dimensional hydroxy-rich pillar[5]arene-extended nanoporous aromatic framework PAF-P5-OH for CO2 uptake. CO2 adsorption study demonstrated that PAF-P5-OH exhibited excellent CO2 uptake capacity (88 cm3 g–1 at 273 K and 76 cm3 g–1 at 298 K) under atmospheric pressure, which could be attributed to the favored dipole interactions between the adsorbed CO2 molecules and the hydroxy groups in PAF-P5-OH.

Abstract:Three pillar[5]arene dimers, bridged by a flexible aliphatic chain (H1) or a relatively rigid phenylene unit (H2 and H3), were synthesized, with the possible synthetic strategies being discussed. The dimers could significantly enhance the binding affinities toward neutral model substrates in comparison with monomeric 1,4-dimethoxypillar[5]arene (H4) through the cooperative binding of two pillar[5]arene moieties. Abstract:Solid amine adsorbents with macrocycle are emerging as promising candidate for efficient CO2 adsorption due to their abundance of active sites, inherent cavities, and ease of encapsulation. Herein, a novel aminepillar[5]arene functionalized porous silica adsorbent (EDA-P5S) was synthesized to investigate CO2 adsorption, the adsorption process of CO2 was executed using a fixed-bed (FD-2000) reactor. The dynamic adsorption capacities of EDA-P5S were 7.62 (0.46) and 7.72 (0.41) mmol/g for CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2, respectively, both the gas mixtures showed high separation selectivity. Subsequent research indicated that its porous structure facilitated the dispersion of amines and increased the exposure of active sites, thereby enhancing CO2 adsorption. Furthermore, the in-situ FTIR, 13C NMR spectra, and computational results collectively confirmed that the CO2 adsorption mechanism on EDA-P5S was consistent with the zwitterion mechanism. This work may provide a useful strategy for CO2 solid amine porous adsorbents to obtain high-purity CO2 by selectively removing CO2 from CH4 or N2.
