Abstract:Congenital granular cell tumors (CGCTs), which are rare benign lesions in newborns, locate predominantly on the anterior maxillary alveolar ridge of female neonates. However, this lesion rarely occurs on the tongue, and only 9 cases have been reported in the English literature. Of the 9 cases, which have been tested for S-100 protein, 4 were immunonegative to S-100 protein. In this present case, we reported a rare case of a 4-day-old Chinese girl with a CGCT on the anterior dorsum of the tongue. The lesion was excised under general anesthesia when the newborn was 3 months old. Histologically, pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia of the overlying mucosa was noted in this lesion. Immunohistochemical stains showed that the granular cells were diffusely strongly positive to S-100 protein, neuron-specific enolase, and vimentin. Depending on these findings, it was diagnosed as CGCT.

Abstract:s Choristomas are proliferative growths that occur when normal tissue develops in abnormal locations and may resemble tumors. Oral choristomas commonly present as slow-growing, indolent, and firm masses. The diagnosis primarily relies on histopathologic examination. Given their tumor-like growth and developmental pathogenesis, it is critical to differentiate them from neoplasms. In this article, we present two clinical cases of oral choristomas, a cartilaginous choristoma, and an osseous choristoma of the tongue. We also offer a brief review of the literature discussing clinical presentation, microscopic features, and therapeutic options.

Chondrosarcoma Of The Larynx: Report Of Two Cases And Review Of The Literature

Abstract:Primary chondroid tumors of the larynx represent less than 1% of all laryngeal tumors. Most of them are chondromas and they often involve to the cricoid cartilage. They are characterized by a low tendency to metastatic diffusion (low grade). The treatment of choice is surgery, which may be endoscopic or "open partial surgery", if extension of the cancer is limited. Prognosis is generally good. In this report, two cases of low grade chondrosarcoma of the larynx are presented, one was treated surgically with cricoidectomy and partial laryngectomy, and another was treated surgically with hemicricoidectomy. Laryngoscopy reveals tumefaction of the larynx, covered by intact mucosa. Computerized tomography imaging with contrast and magnetic resonance imaging defines not only coarse calcifications, pathognomonic of chondromatous neoformations but also the relationship of the neoformation with the surrounding tissues. Treatment is essentially surgical, given the importance of preserving the larynx to patients' quality of life, the only risk is recurrence, which is treated by a second surgery.

Abstract:Lingual osteoma, a rare, benign bone tumor that primarily affects the posterior tongue, can be difficult to diagnose. This study aims to report a case of osteoma affecting the tongue in a 17-year-old female. The patient had a foreign body sensation and a progressively growing lesion for 3 years and underwent clinical examination and diagnostic procedures. A well-defined, smooth-surfaced, white mass was discovered in the posterior third of the tongue. The 1.5 × 1 × 0.4 cm mass was completely excised under local anesthesia and histopathologically confirmed as a benign lingual osteoma. The 2-month post-operative outcome was uneventful. The rarity of lingual osteoma, as well as the fact that it is often asymptomatic, makes diagnosis difficult. The diagnosis entails a proper clinical examination, imaging studies, and histopathological analysis. Surgical intervention, primarily aimed at complete excision while preserving tongue function, remains the primary treatment option. Successful excision entails educating healthcare professionals about this rare benign bony tumor to ensure the best possible patient outcomes.

Abstract:Esophageal chondromatous hamartomas are very rare tumors, characterized by proliferating hyaline cartilage cells. We described the case of a 64-year-old woman, with a progressive foreign body sensation in the laryngopharynx caused by an intraluminal pedicled mass. Transcervical esophagectomy was performed and intraoperative biopsy revealed the mass was a cervical esophageal chondromatous hamartoma. The patient’s postoperative course was uneventful and she recovered well. A review of the literature was conducted, and the symptoms, locations, histopathology findings, treatment methods and follow up results of esophageal hamartoma cases were summarized. We found that pre-operative endoscopic ultrasonography-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) can aid in diagnosis and that aggressive surgical treatment should be recommended for cervical esophageal hamartomas.

Abstract:Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare malignant tumor that affects the salivary glands. Its notable characteristics include aggressive local growth, infiltration of nerves (perineural invasion), a propensity to disseminate to other parts of the body (metastasize), and a high likelihood of recurrence. Here, we present the case of a 71-year-old male patient who presented with swelling on the posterior left side of his tongue, which had been causing him difficulty in chewing for the past six months. The parotid gland is frequently impacted in the head and neck area, with the tongue being comparatively uncommon. While distant metastasis is frequent, metastasis to nearby lymph nodes is not as common. However, if it does occur, it is associated with a poor prognosis and reduces the average survival age of the patient. The preferred treatment for ACC is surgical removal with wide resected margins. If it metastasizes to lymph nodes, then adjunct therapy is the treatment modality for the lesion. ACC exhibits three histopathological patterns: solid, tubular, and cribriform. The solid type is associated with a poorer prognosis compared to cribriform type, which typically has a better prognosis. This case, occurring on the tongue, is rare.
Non-Calcifying Variant of Calcifying Epithelial Odontogenic Tumor with Langerhans Cells

Abstract:Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT) is a rare type of odontogenic tumor. The most characteristic feature of the classical CEOT is the presence of amyloid globules and Liesegang ring calcification in the tumor tissue. Here, we present a non-calcifying variant of intraosseous CEOT with the presence of Langerhans cells within tumor epithelial nests in a 52-year-old Taiwanese woman. The patient was referred from a local dentist to our hospital for treatment of a unilocular radiolucent lesion at the right anterior region of the maxilla. The lesion was excised. Microscopically, the tumor was composed of small nests or strands of odontogenic epithelial cells and amorphous eosinophilic globules of amyloid-like materials in a loose fibrous connective tissue stroma. The tumor epithelial cells were positive for pan-cytokeratins (AE1 and AE3). Langerhans cells demonstrated by anti-CD1a staining were found in nests or strands of tumor epithelial cells. The eosinophilic globules were positive for Congo red and showed green birefringence when subjected to polarized light. Review of the English literature revealed two cases of non-calcifying variant of intraosseous CEOT with Langerhans cells in the anterior and premolar regions of the maxilla. Taken together, we suggest that the non-calcifying, Langerhan cell-rich variant of CEOT may have a distinct predilection for occurrence in the anterior and premolar region of the maxilla in contrast to the classical CEOTs that usually occur in the molar and ascending ramus area of the mandible.
An Unusual Case of Oropharyngeal Chordoma

Abstract:Rationale: Chordomas are rare malignant neoplasms derived from incomplete regression of notochordal tissue along the cranio-coccygeal axis. Chordomas that develop in an atypical position are called ectopic chordomas, such as oropharyngeal chordomas (OCs). OCs are exceedingly rare; only 11 cases have been reported to date. Preoperative diagnosis is challenging, and an accurate diagnosis thus is based on postoperative pathologic examination findings and immunohistochemistry. Although surgical therapy and radiotherapy is performed in some patients, the 5-year survival rate is low. Increasingly more studies of chordomas have been based on molecular biology to increase the survival rate, and targeted therapy could be a new therapy in the future. Patient concerns: The patient presented with a left oropharyngeal mass that had begun slowly enlarging 1 year previously. He reported a foreign body sensation and dysphonia during this time period. Diagnoses: The patient was initially diagnosed with a neurogenic tumor. Routine postoperative pathology showed that the mass was consistent with a chordoma. Intervention: Mass resection was performed. Outcome: One year after the initial surgery, magnetic resonance imaging revealed block signal images at the left retropharyngeal space and clivus. The patient developed recurrence of the OC. Lessons: Surgical resection is the mainstay of treatment for OC, and postoperative adjuvant radiotherapy is also important. An understanding of the unusual case described in this report may be helpful in diagnosing OC, and development of targeted therapy may help clinicians to provide novel treatment for patients with OC.
A Ring-Like Soft Tissue Osteoma In The Temporomandibular Joint Capsule: Case Report

Abstract:Soft tissue osteoma is an extremely rare tumor. All previously reported cases occurred in the tongue and extremities. This report is of a case of soft tissue osteoma in the temporomandibular joint capsule in a 58-year-old woman. Computed tomography (CT) examination with three-dimensional reconstruction revealed a ring-like, well defined densely ossified mass in the right temporomandibular joint, but with no relation to the adjacent bony condyle or fossa. The mass was resected, and reconstruction was done by total alloplastic joint replacement. Intraoperatively, the lesion was embedded in the joint capsule, and completely not attached to nearby bone. The histological examination showed mature dense bone, osteoblast cells, adipose tissue, and hematopoietic tissue. Pathology confirmed the diagnosis of soft-tissue osteoma. The clinical presentation, anatomic features, histologic characteristics, and differential diagnosis of this lesion are discussed.

Abstract:Chondroblastoma is a rare benign bone tumor, which accounts for less than 1% of all osteocartiginous tumors.1 It is always located in the epiphysis of long bones and is commonly seen in patients of 15-20 years of age. While it is seldom seen in the pelvis and sternum, it is even less frequent in the temporomandibular region. We reported herein three cases of chondroblastoma in the temporomandibular region from June 1994 to October 1998 at the Deparment of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the Second Affiliated Hospital, College of Medicine, Zhejiang University, China.

Abstract:Osteochondrolipoma is an exceedingly rare histological variant of lipoma. We present a case of oral lipoma with areas of bone and cartilaginous differentiation. A 51-year-old male patient came with a primary concern of a painless swelling in the mouth that had been present for approximately 3 years. The lesion appeared as a sessile nodule with a smooth surface and a pink color located on the lower lip, measuring 3x3x2 cm. Upon palpation, the lesion was painless and had a soft consistency. An excisional biopsy was conducted.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Choristoma is a rare, benign, congenital proliferative tumor, with osseous choristoma being the rarest. Although the tumor is benign, effective identification is needed for its diagnosis and treatment. Here, we report the diagnosis and successful surgical treatment of two patients with osseous choristoma.CASE SUMMARY Two patients, a young female and young male patient, were found to have a mass on the ocular surface. The tumor presented on the superior temporal bulbar conjunctiva in the first patient and on the upper eyelid in the second patient. Ultrasound biomicroscopy detected a strong echo with clear boundaries covering the lower echo, and computed tomography examination revealed calcification. Both patients underwent surgery, and histopathological evaluation of the mass showed osseous choristoma. They were treated by excision and subsequently cured.CONCLUSION Osseous choristomas are usually asymptomatic. Our patients were cured immediately after surgery, suggesting that surgical treatment is an effective strategy.

Abstract:A 62-year-old male patient sought care due to a lesion in the left border region of the tongue, characterized by increased volume and sporadic painful symptoms. The patient had a smoking history of more than 10 years and noticed the lesion three months prior. Physical examination revealed a swelling with raised edges, ulcerated, firm to palpation, and prone to bleeding upon touch, measuring 2 centimeters. Following an incisional biopsy, oral squamous cell carcinoma was confirmed. The patient was referred to the Oncology service, where a collaborative effort with the Head and Neck Surgery specialty led to the resection of the lesion with a safety margin and ipsilateral neck dissection.

Abstract:Osteochondroma occurs most frequently in the long bones such as the proximal humerus, tibia, and distal femur. It is rare for it to originate in the talar neck. In the present case report, we describe a case of osteochondroma arising from the talar neck. Furthermore, a review of the published studies of talar osteochondroma was performed to obtain a better understanding of the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of this unusual entity.

Abstract:CONTEXT:Glial choristoma is an uncommon developmental abnormality typically presenting at birth or in early childhood. The nasal region is most frequently affected. Palate, tongue, cheek, scalp, and orbit can also be affected but these occurrences are relatively rare.OBJECTIVE:To report 6 cases of glial choristoma arising in the oral and maxillofacial region and to document the clinical and pathologic features of these lesions.DESIGN:Histologic and immunocytochemical examinations were performed on 6 cases of glial choristoma. Biologic behavior, prognosis, and pathogenesis were discussed together with a review of the literature.RESULT:The patients included 5 boys and 1 girl. They all presented with the lesions at birth or soon after birth. Four lesions occurred on the dorsal side of the tongue, near the foramen caecum. One lesion was present in the infratemporal fossa and parapharyngeal space, and the other one was in the submandibular region. All patients received surgical excision, and follow-up data revealed no recurrence for a period of 10 months to 5 years after surgery. Histologically, the lesions showed mature glial cells intermixed with connective tissue. The glial tissue was strongly positive for glial fibrillary acidic protein and S100 but negative for neurofilament.CONCLUSION:Glial choristoma should be classified as a developmental malformation that occurs in many sites of the head and neck. In oral cavity, the tongue is the most frequently affected site. Although these lesions are rare, they should be included in the differential diagnosis of congenital masses in the oral and maxillofacial region.
Alveolar Soft Part Sarcoma of the Tongue: a Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Abstract:Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) is a soft tissue malignant tumor of unknown origin in which tissues or cells are arranged like acini or organs. It usually presents in the deep muscles or fascia of the extremities, and rarely occurs in the head and neck, let alone the tongue. To our knowledge, only 49 cases of ASPS have been previously published in the tongue. Therefore, the course, age of onset, tumor size, and prognosis of ASPS in the tongue are not well understood. We present a case of ASPS in the dorsum of left tongue of a 24-year-old female. Histology of the resected tumor showed features of ASPS. She is currently disease-free at 12-month follow-up.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:Osteochondroma is rarely seen in the facial region, especially around the condyle. Here, we report a case of condylar osteochondroma, aiming to assist the diagnosis and treatment of the tumor.METHODS:A case of osteochondroma of the left mandibular condyle in a 49-year-old man was presented. Medical records with x-ray, computed tomographic scan, and bone scan of histologically proven osteochondroma of mandibular condyle were obtained.RESULTS:The patient underwent a surgical resection and had fewer functional changes as well as less dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint.CONCLUSIONS:The current study highlights the fact that, despite its rarity in the mandibular condyle, surgical resection is an effective treatment method. The decision, however, depends on how much swing of the mandible is required after surgery for correction of asymmetry and occlusion.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Spindle cell hemangioma (SCH) is an uncommon benign vascular tumor that rarely occurs in the mouth.METHODS AND RESULTS: We present an SCH arising in the tongue of a 52-year-old otherwise healthy woman. SCH should be considered in the differential diagnosis of vascular tumors in the oral cavity and not misinterpreted as a more aggressive vascular tumor. We describe the clinical presentation, investigation, differential diagnosis and management of this condition and a literature search showing published case reports.CONCLUSION: Although SCH rarely presents in the oral cavity it needs to be considered in the differential diagnosis of oral cavity tumors.

Abstract:Over the last 20 years, substantial knowledge has been developed in Veterinary oncology, and tumors previously reported only in humans have been identified in animals. Primary paragangliomas of the tongue are extremely rare tumors in human beings and have never been reported in animals. A Chow Chow dog showed an ulcerated nodule at the lingual body, deeply infiltrated, which extended to the base of the tongue. A full clinical and pathological investigation was conducted, and a post-surgical follow-up of 6 months did not detect recurrence. Cytological, histological, and immunohistochemical features are presented and support the diagnosis of lingual paraganglioma. The paraganglioma of the tongue reported in this Chow Chow dog shares many similarities with the human counterpart.
