Abstract:Ferrocene-grafted polyethyleneimine(PEI-Fc) was synthesized via the reaction of ferrocene carboxaldehyde with branched PEI.The graft level of Fc was about 8.35%.Based on the host-guest interaction between ferrocene and β-cyclodextrin(CD),CD-modified PEI was successfully prepared.1H-NMR spectrum indicated that there were 26 CD molecules per PEI-Fc chain.CD-modified PEI via host-guest interaction showed effective DNA condensation ability.At N/P ratio above 3,the positive nanoparticles with diameter of about 150-250 nm were formed.At the cell culture medium of DMEM with 10% FBS,PEI-Fc/CD/DNA polyplexes showed excellent stability.It was probably due to the electronic adsorption of proteins on the surface of polyplexes.HEK293 cells culture results indicated that the transfection of PEI-Fc/CD/DNA polyplexes at N/P ratio of 3,5 and 10 was almost 2-3 folds of that of PEI polyplexes at N/P ratio of 10.The CD modified PEI via host-guest interactions significantly improved the transfection efficiency.

Abstract:This study describes the electron transfer (ET) phenomenon through a series of (Pro-Hyp-Gly) repeat units containing collagen mimics. The peptides contain redox-active ferrocene (Fc) and thiol-functionalized cystein (Cys) at the N- and C-terminals, respectively. Peptide films were prepared on gold surfaces and characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ellipsometry, and Fourier transform-reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (FT-RAIRS). Electrochemical investigations of the films showed a linear but weakly distance-dependent ET. The importance of H-bonding was realized, and the possibility of a conformationally gated ET mechanism has been discussed.

Abstract:The interfacial electrochemistry of mixed monolayers formed by self-assembly from a dilute dodecanethiol-11-(ferrocenylcarbonyloxy)undecanethiol (FcSH) ethanolic solution at pre-treated Au electrodes is reported. The effect of different electrolytes on the interaction among electrochemical products, the interfacial capacitance and the heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant (k(0)), using fast cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry, are examined. The anions have a strong influence on the kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of the interfacial redox reaction through the formation of ion pairs with the oxidized ferrocenium. The ion-pairing capability of various anions with immobilized ferrocenium is compared through evaluation of an effective formation constant. The electrolyte cation is shown to affect the thermodynamics of the ferrocene-ferrocenium electrochemical reaction, with cations of lower mobility shifting the apparent formal potential to more positive potentials, which is explained for the first time with the electric force by means of Debye-Huckel theory. A linear relationship between the apparent formal potential of the ferrocene redox couple in self-assembled monolayers and cation mobility and concentration was observed.

Abstract:With ever-increasing need for thin, flexible, and functional materials in electrochemical systems, various techniques have been explored for creating materials used in fuel cells, batteries, electrochromic devices, solar cells, and sensors. In the present study, a novel ferrocene (Fc) and cholesterol (Chol)-containing oligomer, oligo(FcDC-co-CholDEA), was specially designed and prepared by putting Fc in the main chain and Chol as a side group. MALDI-TOF MS and freezing point depression measurements revealed that in average each oligomer contains three Fc units and three Chol units. Cyclic voltammetric measurements revealed that the oligomer displays superior electrochemical stability if compared with other Fc derivatives containing only one Fc unit and one or two Chol unit and with poly(ferrocenylsilane) with Fc in the main chain. In particular, the Fc-containing oligomer possesses an unusual oxidation center, of which the oxidation potential could be as high as 1.81 V. The oligomer is also superior in self-assembly, as demonstrated by forming an LB film of layered structures. Furthermore, supramolecular films with high mechanical strength in the wet state can be prepared by employing a simple solution casting method. This finding demonstrates that self-assembly is a simple but effective way to create films of potential uses in real-life applications provided proper building blocks are designed and employed.

Abstract:Ferrocene and its derivatives have been widely studied by various physical methods because of their key role in the stimulation of the development of organometallic chemistry and material science [1-6]. They are valuable in organic and organometallic syntheses, for example in asymmetric synthesis, catalytic hydrogenation peptide synthesis etc.. They are also potential aids to the understanding of biological electron transfer and the design of molecular electronic devices. Their redox potential and kinetic parameters are helpful for selecting d o n o r / a c c e p t o r couples for the establishment of biomimetic membrane system. However, the absence of straightforward and reliable procedures for the determination of kinetics of heterogeneous electron transfer reactions with rate constants above 10 -4 m s -~ has long been a problem. In recent years, microelectrodes have become popular as a means of ameliorating this difficulty, especially when used in conjunction with voltammetry [1,5,7-12]. The most striking feature of microelectrodes is their extremely small surface areas which can both enhance the effective mass transport rate and reduce the potential drop in the resistive solution. In general, they exhibit sigmoidal vol tammograms at slow scan rates, which offers a number of advantages over the more familiar transient voltammetry. Self-assembly of catecholic ferrocene and electrochemical behavior of its monolayer

Abstract:Self-assembly of catecholic ferrocene was studied on different surfaces. The self-assembly kinetics of Fc-terminated (Fc-dopamine) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and their stability have been studied and characterized using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and cyclic voltammetry (CV), respectively. AFM images have revealed that the self-assembly process of Fc-dopamine molecules on a mica surface follows the systematic increase of surface coverage with assembly time until a closely packed density is reached. The redox behavior of the Fc-dopamine monolayer in NaClO4 electrolyte solutions was characterized using CV, and the stability of the Fc-dopamine SAMs on an Au surface at different pH values and voltages was evaluated. CV results show that the Fc-dopamine SAMs are stable over a scan voltage range of -0.8-1.0 V under pH values lower than 11, but very rapidly destroyed above pH 11. Finally, the wetting behavior of the Fc-dopamine grafted on rough surfaces is tuned by a redox reaction of the Fc group in SAMs, which exhibits superhydrophobicity with a static water contact angle of 161 degrees on anodized alumina surfaces, and hydrophilicity with a CA of 5 degrees after Fc is oxidized. The work provides useful information for understanding the adhesion and deposition mechanisms of catecholic compounds on substrates.

Abstract:A host-guest equilibrium involving the redox guest 11-(ferrocenylcarbonyloxy)undecanethiol (FcSH) in a self-assembled monolayer on gold electrode surfaces and a beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) host in solution is investigated. The effect of varying the ratio of FcSH to a diluent (n-decanethiol) in the self-assembly solution on the electrochemical characteristics of the ferrocene/ferricenium redox process and the inclusion properties of FcSH self-assembled monolayers (FcSH-SAMs) is examined using cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. alpha- and gamma-cyclodextrin have a negligible effect on both the thermodynamics and kinetics of the redox reaction. The electrochemical and ion-pairing behavior of FcSH-SAMs in solutions containing beta-CD suggests that an inclusion complex is formed and that the included form of the ferrocenyl group is electroinactive in the potential window investigated. Inclusion results in a decrease in cyclic voltammetric peak currents (surface coverage of electroactive FcSH) and a slight increase in the standard electron transfer rate constant for the ferrocene/ferricenium redox process. The decrease in surface coverage of electroactive FcSH upon addition of beta-CD exhibits a response similar to that expected for a Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Stability constants for the inclusion complexes of beta-CD and the ferrocenyl or ferricenium forms of an FcSH-SAMs, containing a FcSH surface coverage of 5.2 x 10(-11) mol cm(-2), have been evaluated as 3.6 (0.4) x 10(4) and 3.2 (0.4) x 10(4), respectively. The stability constants thus evaluated were shown to be dependent on the surface coverage of FcSH in the FcSH-SAMs.

Abstract:Ferrocene-containing polymers (FcPs) have attracted much research interest in the last decade, due to their unique properties and enormous applications. However, it is a great synthetic challenge to prepare FcPs before the advent of click chemistry. In this review, we summarized the recent research efforts on synthesizing FcPs through click reactions, which include click modification of preformed polymers and click polymerization of ferrocene (Fc) containing monomers. Due to the containing Fc moieties, the FcPs enjoy excellent redox activity, thermal stability, electrochemical property, and magnetism. Accordingly, they are promising to be used as electrochemical sensors, catalysts, magneto-ceramics, electrode modifiers, optical devices, etc.
Enhanced Electrochemical Stimuli Multilayers Based on a Ferrocene-Containing Polymer

Abstract:Based on the noncovalent functionalization of ferrocene-grafted polyethylenimine (PEI-Fc) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), CNT bundles are exfoliated by PEI-Fc solution and thus form stable compounds PEI-Fc@CNTs, which is used to construct the PEI-Fc@CNTs/DNA multilayers through layer-by-layer assembly. The multilayers show a highly uniform and homogeneous characteristic, which significantly improve the electrical property of the multilayers. Upon the oxidation electrical potential, the ferrocene groups are switched from reduction state ([Fe(C5H5)2]) to oxidation state ([Fe(C5H5)2]+), leading to change of microenvironments’ charge density, resulting in swelling of the multilayers and a final degree of swelling of 37 % and the decrease of multilayer stiffness. We maintain that electrochemical control over the swelling behavior of multilayers could have important implications for responsive coatings of nanoscale devices, including mechanically tunable surfaces which are used to modulate cellular activities and control drug delivery.

Abstract:The title compound (FCVFc) was found to have electrochemical properties of reversible one electron oxidation and two step one electron reduction. Polymerization of FCVFc can be initiated by electrochemical reduction in 0.1 M Et 4 NClO 4 /MeCN to produce an electrochemically active film with multifunctional groups on Pt and glassy carbon electrodes. Conditions of polymerization have been studied. The modified surface state of P-FCVFc has also been studied by external reflection ir , XPS, and back-scatter Mössbauer spectroscopy. The mechanisms of polymerization in two different potential ranges were proposed.

Abstract:The electrochemical behavior of a dense self-as sembled monolayer of 11-ferroceneundecane-l-thiol was studied. Adsorption of ferrocene-terminated alkanethiol on gold electrode yields stable, electroactive, dense self-assembled monolayers, providing an ideal system for disentangling the fundamental events in interfacial electron transfer. On the basis of the sharp oxidation and reduction peaks corresponding to 11-ferroeeneundecane-1-thiol, and the full width at half maximum narrower than statistical calculation value, we propose that there are two kinds of electron transfer. One is the electron transfer through methylene groups corresponding to the sharp oxidation and reduction peaks, the other Is the electron transfer between the ferroeene molecules corresponding to the broad oxidation and reduction peaks.

Abstract:Hydrogen-bonding interactions between the carboxylic acid groups of mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA) coated gold substrates and the ester surface of peptide dendrimers allows the formation of glutamic acid dendrimers films. Dendrimer films were prepared for generations 1-6 (G1-G6) and analyzed by spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques. Electrochemical studies using cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry show that all films except those of G6 were electrochemically active. Lack of activity of G6 films is rationalized by the total encapsulation of the ferrocene redox probe by the dendritic sheath and lack of ion pairing, which prevents its oxidation.

Abstract:The novel ferrocene-based compound 2-Fc is synthesized through the reaction of ferrocene carbonate acid and epoxy rosin E-51, and characterized by H-1 NMR. The CV behaviors of 2-Fc in different organic solvents are recorded, and the major influential factors, namely, potential scan rate, concentration of electrolyte, and concentration of 2-Fc, and the mechanism of the electrode process are investigated. The CV behaviors of 2-Fc film on electrode in LiClO4 aqueous and organic solutions and the application of 2-Fc in H2PO4- recognition are also studied.

Abstract:Abstract Long-term, minimally perturbative brain electrophysiology requires electrodes to seamlessly integrate into surrounding tissue. In this work, we demonstrate electrodes composed of covalently functionalized graphite, decorated with various functional affinity and epitope tags, and use them to detect changes in electrical potential on the surfaces of illuminated quantum dots and near fluorescing molecules. Affinity and epitope tagging of carbon was achieved using direct attachment of biotin and solid phase peptide synthesis (SPPS) of histidine (His)- and human influenza hemagglutinin (HA)-tags. Surface modification was confirmed with Auger, Energy-Dispersive X-ray (EDX), Raman, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Photoresponse was detected with compatible binding protein-surface tag combinations, confirming desired tag and electrode functionality. These results provide a path to organic, biofunctionalized, fully molecularly-defined electrodes for neuronal applications, and to a wide range of other secondary reactions and modifications of carbon; potential uses include affinity chromatography, DNA sequencing technologies, biomolecular sensors, and surfaces and scaffolds for targeted interfaces with biological tissues.

Abstract:Aggregation and fibril formation of β-amyloid peptides (Aβ) is the key event in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease. Many efforts have been made on the development of effective inhibitors to prevent Aβ fibril formation or disassemble the preformed Aβ fibrils. Peptide inhibitors with sequences homologous to the hydrophobic segments of Aβ can alter the aggregation pathway of Aβ, together with decrease of the cell toxicity. In this study, the conjugate of ferrocenoyl (Fc) with pentapeptide KLVFF (Fc-KLVFF), was synthesized by HBTU/HOBt protocol in solution. The inhibitory effect of Fc-KLVFF on Aβ(1-42) fibril formation was evaluated by thioflavin T fluorescence assay, and confirmed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses. Fc-KLVFF shows high inhibitory effect towards the fibril formation of Aβ(1-42). Additionally, the attachment of ferrocenoyl moiety onto peptides allows us to investigate the interaction between the inhibitor and Aβ(1-42) in real-time by electrochemical method. As expected, tethering of ferrocenoyl moiety onto pentapeptide shows improved lipophilicity and significant resistance towards proteolytic degradation compared to its parent peptide.
Electrolyte-modulated electrochemistry and electrocatalysis on ferrocene-terminated polyelectrolyte brushes

Abstract:We prepared a responsive polyelectrolyte (ferrocene-terminated poly[1-ethyl 3-(2-methacryloyloxyethyl) imidazolium chloride], PEMEImCl) brush on an Au surface through a three-step procedure consisting of surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization, followed by treatment with NaN3 and by a reaction with ethynylferrocene via azide-alkyne Huisgen cycloaddition reaction, known as 'click' chemistry. The interfacial resistance of the polyelectrolyte brush was characterized with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) using [Fe(CN)(6)](3-/4-) as the redox probe in different electrolyte solution. Moreover, the redox behavior of ferrocene (Fc) at the terminus of polyelectrolyte brushes in different electrolyte solutions was characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV). The electrochemical properties depended on the distance between redox probes (Fc at the terminus) and the substrate, which were affected by the conformation of the polyelectrolyte brush triggered by external environments. The electrocatalysis behavior of the Fc-terminated polyelectrolyte brush also can be modulated via the conformation of the brush. It is interesting that all the electrochemical behavior of the polyelectrolyte brush can be mediated by the kind and concentration of anion.

Abstract:A novel ferrocene-based epoxy compound of the glycidyl ether of poly(bisphenol-A 1,1'-ferrocene dicarboxylate) (GEPBFC) was synthesized and the electrochemical behavior of its films and solutions was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV). It was found that the GEPBFC films and solutions present different CV behavior in different solvents and the swelling ability of the solvent is the main factor that affects the CV behavior of GEPBFC films. The kinetic parameters of the film-electrode process, including the surface transfer coefficient, the apparent diffusion coefficient and the standard rate constant in LiClO4 ethanol solution, were calculated, and the corresponding electrode-process mechanism was discussed. Abstract:Ferrocenylalkanethiol (HSC(10)Fc) can be self-assembled into a stable and reproducible monolayer on gold. The self-assembled monolayer(SAM) showed a reversible redox behavior in 0.1 mol/L HClO4 solution, while its voltammetric properties was influenced by both type and concentration of the supporting electrolytes, On the basis of "ion pair" effect, a detailed experimental investigation was performed to evaluate the role of type and concentration of the different anions in determining the shapes and positions of the redox peaks, At the same time, the mixed monolayer of HSC10Fe with HSC11CH3 was prepared, which showed varied electrochemical behavior comparing to the pure monolayer, However, the ion-pair effect was the same as the pure monolayer.

Abstract:Abstract Stable, site‐specific immobilization of redox proteins and enzymes is of interest for the development of biosensors and biofuel cells, where the long‐term stability of enzymatic electrodes as well as the possibility of controlling the orientation of the biomolecules at the electrode surface have a great importance. Ideally, it would be desirable to immobilize redox proteins and enzymes in a specific orientation, but still with some flexibility to optimize reaction kinetics. In this work, we establish such an approach by using site‐directed mutagenesis to introduce cysteine residues at specific locations on the protein surface and the reaction between the free thiol group and maleimide groups attached to the electrode surface to immobilize the mutated enzymes. Using cellobiose dehydrogenase (CDH) as a model system, carbon nanotube electrodes were first covalently modified with maleimide groups following a modular approach based on electrografting of primary amines at the carbon surface and solid‐phase synthesis methodology to elaborate the surface‐modified electrode. The CDH‐modified electrodes were tested for direct electron transfer (DET), showing high catalytic currents as well as excellent long‐term storage stability. The key advantage of this method is its great flexibility, as the main components of the modification can be independently varied to change the local environment at the electrode surface and a wide range of redox proteins or enzymes can be specifically engineered to present cysteine residues at their surface for oriented immobilization.

Abstract:We reported a new approach for the immobilization of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) on glass carbon electrode by employing ferrocene (Fc)-phenylalanine (denoted as Fc-F) hydrogels. To demonstrate the application of the modified electrode, chlorpyrifos, an AChE inhibitor, was determined. Specifically, with the addition of substrate acetylthiocholine, the enzymatic conversion from acetylthiocholine to thiocholine by AChE proceeded. The AChE/Fc-F modified electrode exhibited good electro-catalytic performance for the oxidation of the enzymatically produced thiocholine. In this process, the oxidized forms of Fc (Fc.) in the hydrogels were reduced by thiocholine, resulting in an increase in the anodic current of Fc. Based on the inhibition of the AChE activity, chlorpyrifos was determined with a detection limit of 3 nM.
