Abstract:Localization of optical fields in a bow-tie nano-antenna is studied using a high-frequency structure simulator (HFSS). Simulation results show a strong localization effect in the gap of the antenna. The enhanced intensity in the gap is due to the surface plasmon resonance and the concentration of energy flow.

Abstract:In this paper, the nanometer scale bow-tie antenna and its geometrically complementary bow-tie shaped aperture antenna are proposed and discussed focusing on their optical resonance characteristics. To demonstrate such structures, the finite integration technique is developed in broad band calculations especially in the visible and infrared region. Characterized by surface plasmon resonance, localized strong field are found at the separation gap of the bow-tie antenna, thus providing satisfying near-field confinement and enhancement. In addition, the resonant properties depending on the effects of the geometrical parameters of length and gap distance are systematical studied. Furthermore, comparison of the performances between the two structures is presented for the first time. This investigation can be applied to near-field optical detection or imaging, scanning probe microscopy, lithography and optical manipulation, which has a promising prospect for nanoantennas.

Abstract:In this paper, an investigation on the topic of the bow-tie nanoantenna for optical application is carried out. Based on the broad band calculations in the visible and near infrared range of the optical spectrum implemented through the finite integration technique, we focus our study on such nanoantenna's near-field optical properties. It is found that characterized by surface plasmon resonance, highly localized field are found in the gap between the two components of the bow-tie nanoantenna. In addition, such field enhancement is observed to be dependent on the geometric effects, such as the angle and the tip size of the apex, the spacing and the length. A systemic and detailed demonstration of these effects is provided in this study for nanoantenna's design purpose. This bow-tie nanoantenna can be easily combined with the microscope in order to provide a strong light spot for sufficient illumination when probing the near-field properties in microscopy.

Abstract:Ridge nanoscale aperture antennas have been shown to be a high transmission nanoscale light source. They provide a small, polarization-dependent near-field optical spot with much higher transmission efficiency than circularly-shaped apertures with similar field confinement. This provides significant motivations to understand the electromagnetic fields in the immediate proximity to the apertures. This paper describes an experimental three-dimensional optical near-field mapping of a bowtie nano-aperture. The measurements are performed using a home-built near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) system. An aluminum coated Si3N4 probe with a 150 nm hole at the tip is used to collect optical signals. Both contact and constant-height scan (CHS) modes are used to measure the optical intensity at different longitudinal distances. A force-displacement curve is used to determine the tip-sample separation distance allowing the optical intensities to be mapped at distances as small as 50 nm and up to micrometer level. The experimental results also demonstrate the polarization dependence of the transmission through the bowtie aperture. Numerical simulations are also performed to compute the aperture's electromagnetic near-field distribution and are shown to agree with the experimental results. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We theoretically investigated the localized surface plasmon resonances in core-embedded heterogeneous nano-bowtie antenna. It is proposed that spatial distribution and spectral position for Au–Ag nano-bowtie antenna can be unprecedentedly tuned with respect to core ingredient, bowtie size and filling refractive index of environment. The tunable spectral and spacial properties are attributed to the modified plasmon dipole interaction within the core-embedded nano-bowtie, which can be well manipulated by the size of nano-bowtie antenna as well as the core ingredient. The study provides basic understanding for tuning near-field properties in core-embedded heterobowties for a wide range of applications such as single-molecule fluorescence, SERS and photo-thermal therapy.

Abstract:We propose the coupled gold bowtie nanoantennas array and investigate its plasmonic properties theoretically. The bowtie antenna consists of a pair of opposing truncated cones. We calculate the transmission spectra and the electric field distributions. The evolution of the transmission spectrum with the gap width of the bowtie, the diameter of the tip of the cone and the distance between adjacent bowties is directly visualized. Furthermore, the sensitivity of the antennas array to dielectric constant changes of the environment is also investigated in detail. We show the electric field distribution of this nanostructure and find that E x is mainly located at the corners of the cross section, especially at the extremity of the cone. As for the E y , the electric field enhancement localizes at the external edges and the gap of the bowtie. Our work elucidates further the plasmonic interactions can be useful in the design of optimized, sensitive optical sensors, and the enhancement of the fluorescence of molecules.

Abstract:We present a novel composite nanostructure consisting of bowtie nanoantennas and asymmetric nanoapertures, which provides a new way of indirectly tuning the resonant wavelengths and manipulating the localized fields. The proposed composite nanostructure cannot only produce a symmetric localized field distribution but also create two asymmetric localized field distributions in optical frequency. The resonant peaks of the composite nanostructure can easily be bidirectionally tuned by indirectly adjusting the geometrical parameters of the asymmetric nanoapertures. The mechanisms for manipulating and tuning the localized fields are also discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, the optical bow-tie shaped aperture nanoantenna excited by a plane wave is numerically investigated based on the finite integration technique (FIT) where both near-field resonant properties, and far-field radiation characteristics are studied. Different from conventional metallic antennas used in the radio frequency range, gold aperture nanoantenna with a dimension of tens of nanometers is capable of producing a localized enhanced field. The enhanced filed is equivalent to a strong light spot which can lead to the resolution improvement of the microscopy and optical lithography, thus increasing the optical data storage capacity. Compared with previous studies, the present work improves calculations in terms of broader bands specially in optical range, where the nanoantenna's surface plasmon resonance is appositely described in terms of properly chosen frequency dependent permittivity. It is found from our observation that in the near-field, the bow-tie shaped aperture nanoantenna possesses strong resonant properties. These properties, dependent on the polarization directions of the excitation source and the geometrical parameters of nanoantenna, are studied in detail. In addition, the far-field characteristics of the nanoantenna such as directivity and gain are studied for the first time via computed aperture nanoantenna's pattern. The promising results of this study may have useful potential applications in near-field sample detection, optical microscopy, etc.

Abstract:In order to provide a guide for the design and optimization of bowtie-shaped antenna arrays, their plasmonic properties have been experimentally and numerically investigated with emphasis on geometry and gap separation in THz frequencies. A stronger absorption, frequent red-shift and a higher Q-factor were observed in bowtie dimers, instead of the monomers. Based on the finite-element (FE) simulations using CST Microwave Studio, it was found that these resonant properties of the periodic bowtie particles can be further modulated by their geometric factors, including aspect ratio, area porosity as well as gap separation.
Resonant Effects in Nanoscale Bowtie Apertures

Abstract:Nanoscale bowtie aperture antennas can be used to focus light well below the diffraction limit with extremely high transmission efficiencies. This paper studies the spectral dependence of the transmission through nanoscale bowtie apertures defined in a silver film. A realistic bowtie aperture is numerically modeled using the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method. Results show that the transmission spectrum is dominated by Fabry-Pérot (F-P) waveguide modes and plasmonic modes. The F-P resonance is sensitive to the thickness of the film and the plasmonic resonant mode is closely related to the gap distance of the bowtie aperture. Both characteristics significantly affect the transmission spectrum. To verify these numerical results, bowtie apertures are FIB milled in a silver film. Experimental transmission measurements agree with simulation data. Based on this result, nanoscale bowtie apertures can be optimized to realize deep sub-wavelength confinement with high transmission efficiency with applications to nanolithography, data storage, and bio-chemical sensing.

Abstract:A single transverse electric mode silicon nitride strip waveguide functionalized with cross bowtie nanoplasmonic antenna is investigated, and then its tunable dipole plasmon resonance and maximum local field enhancement are numerically analyzed. The cross bowtie antenna is composed of a horizontal bowtie parallel to the propagation and a vertical bowtie parallel to the electric field. We demonstrate that the dipole plasmon resonance wavelength of localized surface plasmon resonance of cross bowtie antenna can be tuned by the horizontal bowtie, specifically by the edge length of its regular triangular nanoprisms, and the dipole plasmon resonance wavelength is independent of the horizontal gap. We also show that the maximum local field enhancement of cross bowtie antenna can be tuned by the vertical bowtie, specifically by the edge length of its regular triangular nanoprisms. The tunable dipole plasmon resonance and maximum local field enhancement of integrated cross bowtie nanoplasmonic antenna can practically be applied for on-chip sensing applications. Abstract:Nano-rod and bow-tie antennas that are gold nano-antennas on dielectric material and the nano-rod antenna arrays are numerically studied by the finite difference time domain method in three dimensions. The light field that project on the antennas can be confined to a spot with subwavelength width (～λ/11),and the light intensity can be enhanced to 91 times the incident light in the near-field with the bow-tie antenna. The enhancement also exists in the antenna arrays.The highest enhancement of the light intensity at the bow-tie antenna gap can reach about 28000 times, and the localized field can be coupled to a nano-particle near the antenna gap.

Abstract:Metallic bowtie nanostructures as plasmonic nanoantennas can create highly enhanced local fields when resonating with the incident light. With Au bowtie nanostructures fabricated by lithography method, we experimentally observed that the photoluminescence (PL) spatial profile from a single Au bowtie nanoantenna was strongly dependent on the excitation light polarization. While varying the incident light polarization, the spatial distribution of the PL intensity in the nanogap of an Au bowtie changed as predicted by the simulation results on the electromagnetic field enhancement distribution. The polarization feature of the PL intensity relative to the polarization direction of incident excitation light was also discussed. The study may find application in the design of polarization sensitive plasmonic sensors.

Abstract:The metallic periodic bowtie structure is systematically investigated using a three-dimensional finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. The oscillating dipoles picture is proposed to explain the novel enhancement of localized near-field. It is indicated that the shift and the intensity change of notable resonant dips in the transmission spectrum result from the variation of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) conditions due to the different geometrical sizes of the structure and the array periodicity. The results are helpful for guiding the bowtie structures to the application of the near-field imaging and sensing in the subwavelength optics.

Abstract:In this paper, a new form of noncoplanar optical bow-tie shaped nanoantenna structure is proposed, analyzed, and further arranged in array to investigate their near-field enhancement properties. The noncoplanar design not only improves the near-field electric field enhancement performance by 33% compared with that of the coplanar form, but also achieves better compatibility with subsequent conversion circuit by providing appropriate process tolerance. In particular, the array is designed by collecting the convergence of enhanced near-field from each unit to a fixed point for observation conveniently. By adopting the 16-element array composed of noncoplanar configuration, the strongest electric field strength can reach as high as 210 V/m, while that is 33.6 V/m for the conventional bow-tie shaped nanoantenna. Moreover, the field enhancement bandwidth has been broadened.

Abstract:Nanoscale field confinement enabled by plasmonic phenonena [1] has great potential to revolutionize many applications in nanophotonics, including bio-sensing, imaging, and magnetic recording. Various schemes using propagating surface plasmon polariton (SPP) waves have been suggested [2-4], but they experience power losses due to SPP propagation, restricting their practical applications. Here we experimentally demonstrate use of plasmonic resonant phenomena combined with strong field localization to enhance efficiency of confining optical fields. Our approach utilizes a nano-crescent-moon (NCM) shape plasmonic element integrated with a lossless Si waveguide utilized with silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology, to achieve a sub-diffraction limited focusing with spot size ~25 nm. The metallic NCM effectively converts an incoming propagating waveguide mode into a localized resonant plasmon mode, which is localized in an ultrasmall volume in all 3 dimensions. The novel NCM geometry for efficient field localization simultaneously uses three physical mechanisms: localized surface surface plasmons (LSPs) [5,6], SPP edge localization [4], and TEM field localization [7]. The near-field optical measurements of the fabricated NCM using heterodyne near-field scanning optical microscope (H-NSOM) validate the theoretical predictions showing strong field localization.

Abstract:Bowtie aperture antennas are known to generate sub-diffraction limited optical spots in the visible and near-infrared frequencies, which can be applied to many areas. Regular bowtie apertures fabricated by FIB suffer from tapered sidewall and rounded corner, which degrade its optical enhancement and localization. In this work, a new fabrication method is demonstrated to manufacture bowtie aperture antennas which can produce optical spots with lateral size smaller than 20 nm. We also employ numerical simulations to compute the near-field distribution on the surface of the bowtie aperture with topography extracted from the fabrication antennas. The near-field distribution measured by s-NSOM agrees well with the simulation and confirms the improved near-field localization of our bowtie aperture. This new fabrication method can be applied to other types of ridged apertures, which promises wide applications of deep sub-diffraction limited optical spots in many areas. Abstract:We present a novel (to the best of our knowledge) composite nanostructure composed of bowtie nanoantennas (BNAs) and rectangular nanoapertures, which provides a new way to improve the ability of the nanostructure to enhance the optical near field and obtain uniform near-field distribution in the z direction. It is specifically engineered to not only confine the incident light in the nanoscale but also to generate large localized near-field enhancement about 25 times larger than that of solitary BNAs. It also shows a more uniform near-field distribution in the z direction than that of solitary BNAs. The mechanisms of the large enhancement and the uniform near field are also discussed. Abstract:We present numerical studies, nano-fabrication and optical characterization of bowtie nanoantennas demonstrating their superior performance with respect to the electric field enhancement as compared to other Au nanoparticle shapes. For optimized parameters, we found mean intensity enhancement factors >2300x in the feed-gap of the antenna, decreasing to 1300x when introducing a 5nm titanium adhesion layer. Using electron beam lithography we fabricated gold bowties on various substrates with feed-gaps and tip radii as small as 10nm. In polarization resolved measurement we experimentally observed a blue shift of the surface plasmon resonance from 1.72eV to 1.35eV combined with a strong modification of the electric field enhancement in the feed-gap. Under excitation with a 100fs pulsed laser source, we observed non-linear light emission arising from two-photon photoluminescence and second harmonic generation from the gold. The bowtie nanoantenna shows a high potential for outstanding conversion efficiencies and the enhancement of other optical effects which could be exploited in future nanophotonic devices.
