Abstract:In this work, we report a luminescent nanobundle structure formed by a hierarchical self-assembly process of thioglycolic acid (TGA)-capped CdTe quantum dots (QDs). The luminescence intensity of CdTe nanostructures is high enough to get a clear one-photon excitation confocal image. High contrast two-photon excitation confocal images suggest that the nonlinear properties of pristine QDs are well inherited by the formed CdTe nanostructures. The controllability of the structures and inheritance of the optical properties of the building units make the self-assembled nanostructures new generation materials. Abstract:Core-shell semiconductor quantum dots materials are being investigated due to their special performance in repairing surface defects for the single quantum dots and greatly improving the optical performance of quantum dots. Instead of a traditional small flask as a reaction vessel to prepare NaHTe, the preparation of the CdTe core using a three-necked flask was achieved. 10 CdTe/CdS and CdTe/ZnS core-shell semiconductor quantum dots with different core sizes, shell thicknesses and shell materials were synthesized. The UV–visible absorption and fluorescence spectrum of 10 kinds of core-shell semiconductor quantum dots materials were measured and analyzed. The absorption spectrum of quantum dots in the UV-visible band shows that with the increase of quantum dots size, the absorption peak is red-shifted. The CdTe/CdS quantum dots differ in fluorescence lifetime and intensity due to the conversion of different core and shell sizes of quantum dots between types I and II. When the shell thickness of CdTe/ZnS increases, the shell thickness of ZnS reduces the number of dangling bonds and defect states on the core surface, which increases the probability of electron-hole pairs recombination and causes the fluorescence peak red-shift.

Abstract:A simple method was introduced to synthesize CdTe/CdS core/shell nanocrystals (NCs) by using a new kind of "green" tellurium precursor. Both absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectra of CdTe/CdS NCs exhibited a discontinuous shift as follows: slight (<10 nm), large (∼30 nm), and slight (<10 nm) red-shift during the growth of CdS shell. Different sized CdTe cores were introduced to synthesize CdTe/CdS core/shell NCs and similar discontinuous red-shift phenomena in the PL spectra were observed. These characteristics indicated that the structure of CdTe/CdS NCs gradually evolved from type-I to type-II, in agreement with transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the tuning of PL quantum yields (QYs), and PL lifetime results.

Abstract:The synthesis of hybrid nanostructures with controlled size, shape, composition and morphology has attracted increasing attention due to the fundamental and applicable interest. Here, we demonstrate the synthesis and optical properties of hierarchical CdSe-Au hybrid nanostructures with zinc blende (ZB) CdSe nanocrystals (NCs). For 3.5 nm ZB CdSe NCs, one Au cluster was deposited on each CdSe NC. Nevertheless, several Au clusters were selectively deposited on the apexes of 5 nm and 8 nm ZB CdSe NCs, resulting from the different reactivity of crystal facets. Furthermore, hierarchical CdSe-Au nanostructures with complex morphology were organized with the isolated CdSe-Au hybrid NCs by the coalescence of Au domains on the CdSe-Au hybrid NCs. UV-Vis spectra revealed a red tail upon the deposition of Au clusters. The chemical joint of Au on CdSe NCs was further confirmed by fluorescence quenching. The optical limiting performance of CdSe-Au hybrid NCs dispersed in toluene was investigated at 532 nm using a Nd:YAG laser with the pulse width of 8 ns.

Abstract:Au nanoparticles (Au NPs)/CdTe/CdS QDs nanocomposite films were fabricated by deposition of Au NPs and layer-by-layer self-assembly of colloidal CdTe/CdS QDs. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra showed that Au NPs incorporation resulted in an increase of PL intensity about 16-fold compared with that of the samples without Au NPs. PL enhancement of Au NPs/CdTe/CdS QDs nanocomposite films can be controlled by tuning the thickness of spacer layer between the metal nanoparticles (MNPs) and QDs. Optical absorption spectra exhibited the incorporation of Au NPs boosted the absorption of Au NPs/CdTe/CdS QDs nanocomposite films. The results of finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation indicated that the increased sizes of Au NPs resulted in stronger localization of electric field, which boosted the PL intensity of QDs in the vicinity of Au NPs. We thought that these were mainly attributed to localized SP enhancement effects of the Au NPs. Our experiment results demonstrated that Au NPs/QDs nanocomposite films would be a promising candidate for optoelectronic devices application. PACS 78.55.-m; 82.33.Ln; 68.65.Hb.

Abstract:Enhancement of the light emission of CdSe quantum dots was observed by coupling through localized surface plasmons from Au nanoparticles. The enhancement was found to be relative to the shapes and sizes of Au nanoparticles. Au nanoparticles of different sizes were synthesized by a citrate-seeded method. By varying the annealing temperature, worm-like Au nanoparticles of different aspect ratios from 1 to 5 were obtained. Samples of the CdSe coupled with Au with an aspect ratio of 2 and annealed at 500°C exhibited the best photoluminescence emission efficiency. Furthermore, a stronger photoluminescence enhancement was observed with increasing the size of Au nanoparticles. It was also found that when the localized surface plasmons resonance absorption wavelength of Au nanopartiles was just a little smaller than the emission peak of CdSe, the CdSe quantum dots exhibited the strongest photoluminescence intensity, with an enhancement of 6 times.

Abstract:Here, we reported the success in the synthesis of novel CdS nanostructures, nanotubes, core-sheath nanowires, and tube−wire nanojunctions, by thermal evaporation of CdS powder and purposed a model for the growth mechanism. The core−sheath nanowires consist of a crystalline core and amorphous sheath. The photoluminescence characterization indicated that the CdS nanostructures were crystalline and showed a narrow peak at 516.5 nm. In addition, the CdS nanostructures exhibited better field emission properties with a field enhancement factor of 1.5 × 10 4 and turn-on field of 1.4 V/μm.

Abstract:Anisotropic heterostructures are of significant importance in creating novel nanomaterials and realizing their application potentials. Here we report a study on structural evolution and photoluminescence of zinc-blende CdSe-based CdSe/ZnS core/shell nanocrystals with variations of the ZnS shell growth. When raising the shell growth temperature, the structure of CdSc/ZnS can be tuned from sphere to near triangle, and to branched ones, including a tetrapod-like structure. But fast interface diffusion and alloying at high growth temperature will corrupt the branched structure and induce a blue shift in the luminescence spectrum. For tetrapod-like CdSe/ZnS nanocrystals, the growth of ZnS exhibits a pattern of first elongating and then branching, which is accompanied by rising, steady, and descending phases of the photoluminescence quantum yield. This study shows the shape tuning and interface alloying of CdSc/ZnS nanocrystals, and reveals that a moderate growth temperature is necessary for obtaining tetrapod-like CdSe/ZnS nanocrystals.

Abstract:Nanoparticles of CdTe were found to spontaneously reorganize into crystalline nanowires upon controlled removal of the protective shell of organic stabilizer. The intermediate step in the nanowire formation was found to be pearl-necklace aggregates. Strong dipole-dipole interaction is believed to be the driving force of nanoparticle self-organization. The linear aggregates subsequently recrystallized into nanowires whose diameter was determined by the diameter of the nanoparticles. The produced nanowires have high aspect ratio, uniformity, and optical activity. These findings demonstrate the collective behavior of nanoparticles as well as a convenient, simple technique for production of one-dimensional semiconductor colloids suitable for subsequent processing into quantum-confined superstructures, materials, and devices.

Abstract:Surface passivation of nanocrystals with suitable organic or inorganic materials is key to improving the photoluminescence (PL) efficiency and stability of nanocrystals. Although the hot-injection organometallic approach is a powerful tool to achieve different kinds of core/shell structures, direct synthesis of such structures in aqueous phase, which bears many advantages such as biocompatibility, water-solubility, environment-friendliness, and cheapness, is less often reported. Herein we present a facile approach for the one-pot preparation of a water-soluble core/shell structure with CdTe cores packed in a CdS shell in aqueous phase. In comparison with plain CdTe nanocrystals, the PL efficiency of the obtained CdTe/CdS core/shell structure can approach about 75%. The stability of the core/shell structure to UV irradiation and oxidation is also improved.

Abstract:The hybrid CdS–Au2S–Au dendritic nanocrystals were synthesized in toluene solution at 70°C. UV–vis and photoluminescence (PL) spectra recorded the optical properties of hybrid nanostructures, which showed an obvious blue shift relative to the absorption peak of CdS dendritic nanocrystals. The initial CdS dendritic nanocrystals exhibited band gap and trap state emission, both of which were quenched by Au parts. Analysis of the hybrid nanostructures by XRD shows the presence of appreciable amounts of Au2S, indicating that the chemical process involving cation exchanges between Au+ ions and Cd2+ ions was found.

Abstract:CdTe/CdS quantum dots/Au nano-rods nano-composite films were fabricated on planar Si substrates. The optical properties of all samples were investigated and the corresponding simulations were studied. It was found that the photoluminescence intensity of the CdTe/CdS quantum dots films was enhanced about 9-fold after the incorporation of Au nano-rods, the internal quantum efficiency increased from 24.3% to 35.2% due to the localized surface plasmon resonance. The time-resolved luminescence decay curves showed that the lifetimes of CdTe/CdS quantum dots films decreased to 2.8 ns after interaction with Au nano-rods. The results of finite-difference time-domain simulation indicated that Au nano-rods induced the localization of electric field, which enhanced the PL intensity of quantum dots films in the vicinity of Au nano-rods. Abstract:The origin of the near-infrared photoluminescence (PL) from thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters (Au NCs, <2 nm) has long been controversial, and the exact mechanism for the enhancement of quantum yield (QY) in many works remains elusive. Meanwhile, based upon the sole steady-state PL analysis, it is still a major challenge for researchers to map out a definitive relationship between the atomic structure and the PL property and understand how the Au(0) kernel and Au(I)-S surface contribute to the PL of Au NCs. Herein, we provide a paradigm study to address the above critical issues. By using a correlated series of "mono-cuboctahedral kernel" Au NCs and combined analyses of steady-state, temperature-dependence, femtosecond transient absorption, and Stark spectroscopy measurements, we have explicitly mapped out a kernel-origin mechanism and clearly elucidate the surface-structure effect, which establishes a definitive atomic-level structure-emission relationship. A ∼100-fold enhancement of QY is realized via suppression of two effects: (i) the ultrafast kernel relaxation and (ii) the surface vibrations. The new insights into the PL origin, QY enhancement, wavelength tunability, and structure-property relationship constitute a major step toward the fundamental understanding and structural-tailoring-based modulation and enhancement of PL from Au NCs.

Abstract:Cadmium telluride (CdTe) materials are an important absorbed layer and development solar energy conversion devices based on nano-fabrication techniques have attracted considerable interest in fabricating optoelectronic devices. Herein, through close-space sublimation method, vertically high-aligned CdTe nanorods are successfully obtained for the first time, with the help of Anodic Aluminum Oxide (AAO) template, which can perfectly control the morphology, diameter, and spacing among the CdTe nanorods. Its the crystal structure and optical properties are characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman scattering, and photoluminescence. The results indicate that CdTe nanorods are textured polycrystalline with the cubic phase and bear good crystallinity. In addition, this deposition technique is a clean, inexpensive, high-throughput, versatile and reproducible for obtaining vertically aligned CdTe nanorod, which shows the potential applications in the future for the preparation of CdTe-based nanostructure solar cells.

Abstract:Many fascinating US hierarchical nanostructures, including nanobelt networks, flower/sphere networks by nanobelts/wires self-assembly, and nanowires, have been Successfully prepared in high yields and purities by a novel dithizone (DTZ) and tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA)-synergistically directed method. A detailed study of the effect of experimental parameters on the morphology is presented. Results and analyses demonstrated that the Cd(Ac)(2)/dithizone (DTZ) molar ratio and the volume ratio of H2O and TEPA have an immense function in the subtle morphology control of US products. A possible growth process of DTZ and TEPA-synergistic-assisted gradual crystallization and subsequent self-assembling is proposed as a plausible mechanistic interpretation for the formation of those novel nanostructures. More importantly, this is the first time to synthesize wurtzite CdS ultrathin nanobelts in solution. The photoluminescence properties of various US hierarchical structures are also investigated.

Abstract:Radiation detection demands new scintillators with high quantum efficiency, high energy resolution, and short luminescence lifetimes. Nanocomposites consisting of quantum dots and Ce3+ doped nanophosphors may be able to meet these requirements. Here, we report the luminescence enhancement of LaF3:Ce/CdTe nanocomposites which were synthesized by a wet chemistry method. CdTe quantum dots in LaF3:Ce/CdTe nanocomposites are converted into nanowires, while in LaF3/CdTe nanocomposites no such conversion is observed. As a result, the CdTe luminescence in LaF3:Ce/CdTe nanocomposites is enhanced about five times, while in LaF3/CdTe nanocomposites no enhancement was observed. Energy transfer, light reabsorption, and defect passivation are the likely reasons for the luminescence enhancement.

Abstract:CdSe nanoparticles were synthesized using microemulsion route, which surfaces were modified in-situ with ambiphylic species. The structural defects could be removed relatively and the broad particle size distribution could be narrowed efficiently by refluxing the samples a mixture of toluene/methanol. Several methods, such as optical absorption, luminescence, and transmission electron microscopic were used to characterize these nanoparticles. Single-layer electroluminescence devices of the nanoparticles were fabricated by spin coating techniques. Electroluminescence from CdSe nanoparticles shows obvious difference with photoluminescence, indicating the different emitting states.
