Most recent researches increasingly suggest a role of estrogen in the progression of PC. Our investigation was designed to observe the variation of circulating estrogen and androgen levels in PC patients after CAB, and to explore the possible clinical significance. METHODS From June 2011 to August 2011, 105 consecutive metastatic PC patients on the treatment of CAB were recruited, and divided into 3 groups according to different hormone sensitive status, including 58 hormone sensitive PC (HSPC), 27 PC after the failure of first line hormone therapy (AIPC) and 20 castration resistant PC (CRPC). Another 36 consecutive patients with treatment naive metastatic PC (TNPC) during the same period were used as a control. Serum testosterone (T), estradiol (E2), as well as estrogen-androgen ratio (E2/T), were studied and compared between groups. RESULTS Mean T, E2 and E2/T of those 4 groups were list in table 1. After CAB, T was suppressed low, regardless of different hormone sensitive status (P>0.5); E2 was first suppressed but gradually elevated, while E2/T generally kept on elevating; the recovery of E2 and skyrocketing of E2/T were of more significance with the failure of CAB, especially in CRPC (p<0.01). (Figure 1, 2, 3). Table 1. Variation of T, E2 and E2/T in different groups. Variation Groups Average (95% Confidence Interval) T (ng/ml) TNPC 4.07(3.47,4.66) HSPC 0.15(0.11,0.19) AIPC 0.11(0.06,0.15) CRPC 0.09(0.03,0.15) E2 (pg/ml) TNPC 33.06(29.21,36.9) HSPC 9.23(7.5,11) AIPC 9.13(6.44,11.82) CRPC 15.05(8.02,22.08) E2/T TNPC 9.58(7.63,11.51) HSPC 269.29(150.44,388.13) AIPC 292.06(119.28,464.84) CRPC 996.67(264.59,1728.76) CONCLUSIONS Metabolism of estrogen might change during CAB; estrogen and estrogen related pathways might play a role in the development of CRPC. © 2012 by American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetails Volume 187Issue 4SApril 2012Page: e316 Advertisement Copyright & Permissions© 2012 by American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.MetricsAuthor Information Xiaojian Qin Shanghai, China, People's Republic of More articles by this author Hailiang Zhang Shanghai, China, People's Republic of More articles by this author Dingwei Ye Shanghai, China, People's Republic of More articles by this author Xudong Yao Shanghai, China, People's Republic of More articles by this author Shilin Zhang Shanghai, China, People's Republic of More articles by this author Bo Dai Shanghai, China, People's Republic of More articles by this author Expand All Advertisement Advertisement PDF downloadLoading ...
