Abstract:Three homochiral 3D frameworks are assembled based on periodically ordered arrays of helices built from axial chiral 3,3'-bipyridine-5,5',6,6'-tetramethyl-2,2'-dimethoxy-1,1'-biphenyl ligands and linearly coordinated Ag(I) ions. The aggregation behavior of silver salts and the ditopic ligand in solutions was investigated by a variety of techniques, including (1)H NMR, UV-vis, CD, GPC and MALDI-TOF. The cationic polymer skeleton exhibits an unprecedented conformational polymorphism in the solid-state, folding into two-, three- and four-fold helices with NO(3)(-), PF(6)(-) and ClO(4)(-) as the counteranion, respectively. The two-fold helices cross-link via argentophilic Ag-Ag interactions to form sextuple helices, which lead to a three-dimensional (3D) chiral framework. The three-fold or four-fold helices, on the other hand, self-associates in pairs to form three-dimensional tubular architectures. This anion-dependent self-assembly behavior can be rationalized by considering the sizes, geometries and binding abilities of the counteranions and subsequent chain conformation to minimize steric repulsions and maximize secondary interactions.

Abstract:A family of homochiral metal carboxylate coordination polymers have been synthesized by treating 2,2'-dihydroxy-1,1'-binaphthalene-6,6'-dicarboxylic acid (H(2)BDA) with metal salts at elevated temperatures. BDA ligands link adjacent metal centers to form 1D coordination polymeric chains using the carboxylate functionality, while the hydroxyl groups of BDA ligands form H-bonds with carboxylate oxygen atoms to link 1D coordination polymeric chains into open frameworks of higher dimensionality. We also present evidence for the important role played by H-bonds in the stabilization of open framework structures which allows for the hierarchical assembly of chiral porous solids.

Abstract:Although a variety of chiral porous framework materials have been reported, there are few examples known to combine molecular chirality, helicity, and three-dimensional (3D) intrinsically chiral topology in one structure, which is beneficial for chirality transfer and amplification. Here, we report the synthesis of the first two 3D covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with an intrinsic chiral qzd topology, which exhibit unusual integration of various homochiral and homohelical features. By imine condensation of 4-connected porphyrin tetraamines and 2-connected enantiopure diene dialdehyde, we prepared two isostructural COFs with a noninterpenetrated qzd topology. The specific geometry and conformation flexibility of the V-shaped diene linker control the alignment of square-planar porphyrin units with rotational linkages and facilitate the creation of homochiral extended porous structures that feature a helical arrangement of porphyrins. Post-synthetic metalation of CCOF 23 with Rh(I) affords a heterogeneous catalyst for the asymmetric Michael addition reaction of aryl boronic acids to 2-cyclohexenone, which shows higher enantioselectivities compared to their homogeneous counterparts, presumably due to the confined effect of helical channels. This finding will provide an impetus to explore multichirality materials, offering new insights into the generation and control of helicity, homochirality, and enantioselectivity in the solid state.

Abstract:A family of homochiral 1D cadmium(II) coordination polymers based on the (S)-2,2'-dimethoxy-1,1'-binaphthyl-3,3'-bis(4-vinylpyridine) (L) bridging ligand were synthesized from the same building blocks under slightly different conditions, and characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. While [CdL(DMF)(4)](ClO4)(2).EtOH.0.5H(2)O (1) adopts a 1D zigzag chain structure, [CdL2(ClO4)(2)].3EtOH.H2O (2) and [CdL2(ClO4)(H2O)] (ClO4).1.5(o-C6H4Cl2).3EtOH.6H(2)O (3) both exhibit 1D polymeric structures that are built from 38-membered macrocycles. These 1D coordination polymers further pack into chiral porous frameworks via pi..pi interactions with a large percentage of void spaces that are occupied by solvent molecules and counterions.

Abstract:Six homochiral coordination polymers 1-6 based on a new enantiopure elongated (S)-2,2'-diethoxy-1,1'-binaphthyl-6,6'-bis(4-vinylpyridine) ligand ( L) and divalent metal (Zn, Cd, and Ni) connecting points were synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. These new homochiral coordination polymers adopt two distinct framework structures: a one-dimensional infinite chain structure with bridging L ligands occupying the axial positions of the metal centers and a two-dimensional rhombic grid structure formed by linking octahedrally coordinated metal centers with four pyridyl groups of bridging L ligands in the equatorial positions. The structures of these coordination polymers are sensitive to the nature of the anions as well as the solvents from which the coordination polymer crystals were grown. Powder X-ray diffraction studies showed that the two-dimensional chiral rhombic grids exhibited porosity, which could potentially find applications in enantioselective separations and catalysis.

Abstract:Six homochiral coordination polymers 1 - 6 based on an enantiopure elongated and bent bipyridine ligand were synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The framework structures of all six compounds were built up from similar 1D polymeric chains composed of 46-membered metallomacrocycles. Four distinct packing patterns were observed for this family of coordination polymers. With the exception of 1, the anions do not coordinate to the metal centers and reside in the open channels. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies show that the structures of these coordination polymers are sensitive to the anions even though they do not coordinate to the metal centers. The framework structures are somewhat tolerant of the change of metal centers and their local coordination environments. Gas sorption measurements on 1 suggest that chiral porous solids can be obtained with the present 1D coordination polymeric building blocks.

Abstract:There have been breakthroughs in the development of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with tunability of composition, structure, and function, but the synthesis of chiral COFs remains a great challenge. Here we report the construction of two-dimensional COFs with chiral functionalities embedded into the frameworks by imine condensations of enantiopure TADDOL-derived tetraaldehydes with 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane. Powder X-ray diffraction and computer modeling together with pore size distribution analysis show that one COF has a twofold-interpenetrated grid-type network and the other has a non-interpenetrated grid network. After postsynthetic modification of the chiral dihydroxy groups of TADDOL units with Ti(O(i)Pr)4, the materials are efficient and recyclable heterogeneous catalysts for asymmetric addition of diethylzinc to aldehydes with high enantioselectivity. The results reported here will greatly expand the scope of materials design and engineering for the creation of new types of functional porous materials.

Abstract:Based on a designed enantiomerically pure chiral ligand H3L, two interesting homochiral metal−organic frameworks (HMOFs), namely {[Zn3(L)2(H2O)2]∙2H2O} n (1) and {[Pb(HL)(H2O)]∙H2O} n (2), have been solvothermally synthesized (H3L = (S)-4'-(((1-carboxyethyl)amino)methyl)-[1,1′-biphenyl]-3,5-dicarboxylic acid). Complexes 1 and 2 are novel three-dimensional metal−organic helicates with different structural motifs. In 1, anionic (L)3− ligands bridge trimetallic Zn-clusters to form a [3,6]-connected architecture of (63)2(612·83) topology. In particular, each trimetallic Zn-cluster is the node of six strand 21 helical chains consisting of four right-handed helical chains and two left-handed helical chains. In 2, zwitterionic (HL)2− ligands link PbII ions into a 3-connected 103-topological helicate composed of 21 helical chains extending along three crystal axes, and two thirds of which are left-handed. Interesting enough, the chiral ligand H3L not only transferred its inherent chirality to the synthesized complexes 1 and 2, but also induced unexpected helical chirality. Furthermore, the morphologies, thermal stabilities and solid-state optical properties including CD spectra, and nonlinear optical and luminescent properties of compounds 1 and 2 were also carried out. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibit interesting fluorescence emissions and obvious second-order nonlinear activity in addition to the excellent thermal stability of their dehydrated frameworks, indicating that the HMOF materials have great potential in optical devices.

Abstract:Homochiral octupolar metal-organoboron frameworks with the general formula [M2L(OH)(MeOH)]center dot 3H(2)O [M = Co (1), Mn (2), Ni (3), Cu (4), Zn (5), Cd (6)] have been constructed from racemic C-3-symmetric tris(4-benzoic acid)tridurylborane and the divalent metal ions. Compounds 1-6 are isostructural and crystallize in the chiral cubic space group F432, and they adopt an eightfold-interpenetrating (10,3)-a network formed by linking bimetal building blocks with three bidentate carboxylate groups of bridging Lambda-L ligands. Bulk crystals of each of the six compounds are not a racemic mixture, and their optical activity and enantiomeric nature were demonstrated by solid-state circular dichroism spectra. Consistent with their polar structures, the colorless compounds 5 and 6 exhibit powder second harmonic generation intensities 3-4 times higher than that of potassium dihydrogen phosphate, making them, to the best of our knowledge, the first two examples of NLO-active, homochiral octupolar metal-organic solids.

Abstract:A unique homochiral metal-organic framework has been successfully synthesized by solvothermal reaction of an achiral flexible V-shaped ligand and a nanosized pi-electron-deficient pyridine ligand based on cobalt(II) salt, [Co(L)(DPNDI)(0.5)](n) (1) (H2L = 4,4'-dicarboxydiphenylamine, DPNDI = N,N'-di-(4-pyridyl)-1,4,5,8-naphthalenediimide); the helixes assembled by H2L and cobalt(II) paddle-wheel centers are left-handed and transform the framework to chiral. Also, the inserting of the DPNDI transforms the original dia net constructed by H2L and cobalt(H) paddle-wheel centers to a 3-fold jsm net. This is the first example of interpenetrated jsm net. In addition, the chiral property of bulk products is confirmed by circular dichroism spectra (CD), and the thermal stability and the magnetic properties are also investigated.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a new class of lightweight crystalline organic porous materials that are covalently constructed from organic building blocks. However, it is very difficult to construct the functional COFs. It is particularly very complicated to construct chiral covalent organic frameworks (CCOFs), because asymmetry, porosity, and crystallinity must be contemporaneously taken into account. Here, we prepared two CCOFs, termed TPB2-COF and Tfp2-COF, by directly employing chiral organo-catalysts as building units. Because of the precisely one-dimensional pore channels with periodically appended of chiral organo-catalytic sites as well as the ability to accurately control the environment around chiral organo-catalytic sites, these obtained CCOFs could serve as effective heterogeneous catalysts for an asymmetric Steglich rearrangement and Asymmetric Michael addition, with the stereoselectivity and diastereoselectivity up to 84% enantiomeric excess (ee) value and 86% ee value, 17:1 diaster...

Abstract:AbstractA new strategy for creating homochiral metal–organic frameworks through a fusion of pillaring and templating concepts is demonstrated. This strategy makes use of the synergy among various chemical interactions during self‐assembly processes, and leads to the synthesis of a series of homochiral frameworks. In the presence of only pillar‐to‐pillar π–π interactions, inter‐pillar forces compete against metal–pillar interactions, resulting in mismatch between pillar‐to‐pillar and metal‐to‐metal separations and consequently 2D materials without pillaring. To create 3D materials, a method was developed to use various aromatic molecules, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in particular, as templates to modulate the inter‐pillar interaction and separation, leading to the formation of 3D homochiral frameworks. The use of aromatic molecules, especially hydrocarbons, as structure‐directing agents, represents a new approach in the development of crystalline porous materials. Aromatic templates can be post‐synthetically extracted to yield flexible porous homochiral materials with gate‐opening gas sorption behaviors for both N2 and CO2 at partial pressures tunable by temperature.

Abstract:Three homochiral metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on enantiopure chiral ligand: (R)-2,2'-dimethoxy-5,5',6,6',7,7',8,8'-octahydro-1,1'-binaphthyl-3,3'-dicarboxylic acid (HA), namely Cd(L)(Py)(3) 1, Cu(L)(Py)(3) 2, Na[Cd(L)(LH)]center dot 2.5H(2)O 3(Py= pyridine), were firstly synthesized, under solvothermal reactions. X-ray single-crystal diffraction studies reveal that 1 and 2 adopt one-dimensional (1 D) infinite helical structures, while 3 possesses 2D chiral framework structure adopting ABAB offset stacking modes along the a-axis. Thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) display that 3 is thermally stable to 330 C which is rare for homochiral MOB. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In order to understand and rationally construct homochiral self-assembled structures from racemic molecules, two novel crystalline metal-organic frameworks with chiral cavities were developed. The homochirality of the layers in both MOFs was achieved by forming strong coordinate bonds between the C-3-symmetric cyclotriveratrylene and Zn4O(CO2)(6) cluster. By changing weak p-p interactions between organic building blocks, the achiral assembly of ZnCTV-1 was successfully transformed into a chiral assembly in ZnCTV-2. This study demonstrated a possible route for designing the synthesis of chiral MOF through weak interactions.

Abstract:In spite of their great promise for enantioselective processes due to the rich host-guest chemistry, it remains a challenge to construct covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with chiral three-dimensional (3D) structures. Here we report bottom-up synthesis of the first example of 3D chiral COFs by imine condensation of an enantiopure 2-fold symmetric TADDOL-derived tetraaldehyde with a tetrahedral tetra(4-anilyl)methane. After postsynthetic oxidation of imine linkages, the framework is transformed into an amide-linked COF with retention of crystallinity and permanent porosity as well as enhanced chemical stability. The resultant isostructural COFs feature a 4-fold interpenetrated diamondoid open framework with tubular channels decorated with chiral dihydroxy auxiliaries. Both COFs can be used as chiral stationary phases for high performance liquid chromatography to enantioseparate racemic alcohols, and the oxidized COF shows superior separation performance compared to the pristine framework.
