Abstract:Topological aspects of the geometry of DNA and similar chiral molecules have received a lot of attention, while the topology of their electronic structure is less explored. Previous experiments have revealed that DNA can efficiently filter spin-polarized electrons between metal contacts, a process called chiral-induced spin-selectivity (CISS). However, the underlying correlation between chiral structure and electronic spin remains elusive. In this work, we reveal an orbital texture in the band structure, a topological characteristic induced by the chirality. We find that this orbital texture enables the chiral molecule to polarize the quantum orbital. This orbital polarization effect (OPE) induces spin polarization assisted by the spin-orbit interaction from a metal contact and leads to magnetorestistance and chiral separation. The orbital angular momentum of photoelectrons also plays an essential role in related photoemission experiments. Beyond CISS, we predict that OPE can induce spin-selective phenomena even in achiral but inversion-breaking materials.

Abstract:Chiral molecules can exhibit strong spin–orbit coupling, which can result in a large spin polarization. This is due to the fact that the energy levels of the electrons in a chiral molecule are strongly influenced by the chiral structure of the molecule, which can result in the separation of the energy levels for electrons with different spin orientations. We report a controlled spin-selective transmission of electrons through 20 base-paired poly-cytosine molecules functionalized with MoS2 flakes on ITO glass via the quantum mechanical tunneling effect. A reversion in spin polarization was observed after the silver ions interact with poly-cytosine due to the strong coordination of Ag(I) with cytosine–cytosine (C–C) mismatches, indicating the formation of duplex structural motifs, as confirmed by the circular dichroism spectroscopy at room temperature. Manipulating the spin of an electron through such a small molecule merely controlled by special cations could pave the way for major advances in spin-independent charge transport, advanced bioanalytical system design, and related applications.

Abstract:Lambda-and Delta-enantiomers of cis-[CoBr(NH(3))(en)(2)]Br(2) were obtained by absolute asymmetric synthesis. The interactions between the achiral 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl) porphyrin (TPPS) and two chiral cationic Co(III) complexes were studied by UV-vis spectroscopy, circular dichroism (CD), fluorescence spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM). It was found that the cationic Co( III) complexes can induce the formation of chiral porphyrin J-aggregates, that the metal-centered chirality can be transferred to the J-aggregates, and that the chirality was able to be memorized and amplified in the porphyrin J-aggregates. Therefore, this should be a good chiral model for understanding similar processes in physical and biological systems.

As the secondary structure of DNA, the charge transfer along DNA hairpins has been widely studied for more than two decades, finding that DNA hairpins exhibit spin-related effects as reported in recent experiments. Here, we propose a setup to demonstrate directly the CISS effect in DNA hairpins contacted by two nonmagnetic leads at both ends of the stem. Our results indicate that DNA hairpins present pronounced CISS effect and the spin polarization could be enhanced by using conducting molecules as the loop. In particular, DNA hairpins show several intriguing features, which are different from other chiral molecules. First, the local spin currents can flow circularly and assemble into a number of vortex clusters when the electron energy locates in the left/right electronic band of the stem. The chirality of vortex clusters in each band is the same and will be reversed by switching the electron energy from the left band to the right one, inducing the sign reversal of the spin polarization. Interestingly, the local spin currents can be greater than the corresponding spin component of the source-drain current. Second, both the conductance and the spin polarization can increase with molecular length as well as dephasing strength, contrary to the physical intuition that the transmission ability of molecular wires should be poorer when suffering from stronger scattering. Third, we unveil the optimal contact configuration of efficient electron transport and that of the CISS effect, which are distinct from each other and can be controlled by dephasing strength. The underlying physical mechanism is illustrated.

Abstract:Two pairs of enantiomeric compounds with formulas (S)- or (R)-Co-3(ppap)(2)(4,4'-bpy)(2)(H2O)(2)center dot 4H(2)O [(S)-1 or (R)-1], (S)- or (R)-Co-3(ppap)(2)(4,4'-bpy)(2)(H2O)(2)center dot 3H(2)O [(S)- or (R)-2), and related racemic compound Co-3(ppap)(2)(4,4'-bpy)(2)(H2O)(2)center dot 4H(2)O (rac-3; 4,4'-bpy=4,4'-bipyridine, H(3)ppap = 3-phenyl-2-[(phosphonomethy)amino]propanoic acid) are reported. Compounds 1 and rac-3 show identical three-dimensional framework structures, whereas compounds 2 have two-dimensional layer structures. Compounds 1 and 2 are catenation isomers, formation of which is controlled solely by the pH of the reaction mixtures, whereas the formation of isomeric compounds 1 and rac-3 is controlled purely by the chirality of the phosphonate ligand. The magnetic properties of fully dehydrated (S)-1, (S)-2, and rac-3 are highly dependent on both structure and chirality.

Abstract:Synthesis of common organic polymers bearing a helical sense in aqueous media is still an inflexible area. Here, we report proline-derived imidazolium-functionalized water-soluble, highly stable chiral polymers/chiral polyelectrolytes whose chiral pendant groups exist at the cation part of the polymer chains with different counteranions. Despite chiral pendants, chiral polymers with chloride counteranions did not respond to circular dichroism (CD) absorption spectroscopy, which suggests that they exist as random coils. Interestingly, hydroxy-containing poly-( l-)-2-OH and poly-( d-)-2-OH showed two intense CD signals (with opposite loops), suggesting that the hydroxyl anion facilitates the noncovalent interactions in the chiral polymers to realize this “random coil to helical” transformation, which failed with the chloride anion. l-Prolinate-substituted polymers (poly-( l-)-2-OH) showed a positive Cotton effect with a double-stranded, right-handed helical sense in the presence of achiral and chiral counteranions. Under identical conditions, d-prolinate-substituted chiral polymers (poly-( d-)-2-OH) showed a negative Cotton effect with a left-handed helical sense, which is exactly opposite to its counterpart. This study discusses the influence of the type of chiral center on a preferred helical sense and tries to establish the influence of chirality at the main chain vs side chain on the type and extent of helicity. The synthesized chiral polymers were successfully used for the chiral resolution of racemic d,l-alanine through enantioselective crystallization. These helical polymers showed good enantio-separation efficiency with an enantiomeric excess (ee) of up to 90%. Here, we demonstrated that by selective choice of the chiral helical polymers, a targeted enantiomer could be recrystallized.

Abstract:Electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complexes of triphenylene (TP) based side-chain discotic liquid crystalline polymers doped with chiral acceptors exhibit a remarkable supramolecular polymer effect upon reaching a critical doping amount, complying with the discrete columnar stack (DCS) based modular assembly mechanism. Furthermore, selective left-or right-handed homochirality determined by the enantiomeric nature of chiral dopants has been achieved, with a helical polymer backbone surrounded by chiral supramolecular columns through modular assembly between the chiral dopant and DCS subunits, revealing a strong circular dichroism (CD) activity reminiscent of the fascinating hierarchically assembled superstructure of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV). Such polymeric EDA stoichiometric complexation and generation of single-handedness provides inspiring insight into and guidance for constructing various chiral functional materials via non-covalent interactions in a facile way, and also enhances in-depth understanding of the origin of biological helical structures and chiral basis of life.
Homochiral Covalent Organic Frameworks with Superhelical Nanostructures Enable Efficient Chirality-Induced Spin Selectivity

Abstract:Despite significant advancements in fabricating covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with diverse morphologies, creating COFs with superhelical nanostructures remains challenging. We report here the controlled synthesis of homochiral superhelical COF nanofibers by manipulating pendent alkyl chain lengths in organic linkers. This approach yields homochiral 3D COFs 13-OR with a 10-fold interpenetrated diamondoid structure (R = H, Me, Et, nPr, nBu) from enantiopure 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol (BINOL)-based tetraaldehydes and tetraamine. COF-13-OEt exhibits macroscopic chirality as right-handed and left-handed superhelical fibers, whereas others adopt spherical or non-helical morphologies. Time-tracking shows a self-assembly process from non-helical strands to single-stranded helical fibers and intertwined superhelices. Ethoxyl substituents, being of optimal size, balance solvophobic effects and intermolecular interactions, driving the formation of superhelical nanostructures, with handedness determined by BINOL chirality. The superhelical nature of these materials is evident in their chiral recognition and spin-filter properties, showing significantly improved enantiodiscrimination in carbohydrate binding (up to six times higher enantioselectivity) and a remarkable chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect with a 48-51% spin polarization ratio, a feature absent in non-helical analogs.
Enhancement of Chirality-Induced Spin Selectivity by Strong Electron Correlations

Abstract:Chirality-induced spin selectivity is a spin-splitting phenomenon from a helical structure with a considerably effective spin-orbit coupling. This unexpectedly large spin-splitting phenomenon has been experimentally observed in chiral organic molecules, which typically show a weak spin-orbit coupling. To understand this, we use the renormalized mean-field theory and Landauer-Büttiker formulas to study the transport properties of single-stranded DNA in the presence of strong electron correlation. It shows a significant spin polarization of 46.5% near the Coulomb repulsion limit, which explains the extremely high spin polarization observed in experiments. Compared to systems without electron correlation, the averaged spin polarization in this case is 2 to 4 times greater across various system sizes. Furthermore, the parameter dependence of the spin polarization and the underlying Metal-Insulator transition are studied.

Abstract:In this work, to eliminate the effect of the hydrophobicity of N-acetyl groups in chitosan on the interaction between chitosan and DNA, a water soluble chitosan with molecular weight of 5000 and deacetylated degree of 99% was selected to complex with DNA at varied charged ratios. The physicochemical properties of chitoplexes were investigated by means of FTIR, circular dichroism (CD), static fluorescence spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results indicated that upon interacting with chitosan, the DNA molecules saved a B conformation, and the binding affinity of chitosan to DNA was dependent on pH of media. At pH 5.5, highly charged chitosan had a strong binding affinity with DNA; whereas in pH 12.0 medium, only weak interactions existed. The CD spectra of Hoechst 33258 competitive displacement revealed that chitosan was partially bound to the minor groove of DNA. The morphology of chitosan/DNA complexes was strongly dependent upon the charge ratios. At charge ratio (+/-) of 1:4, not all DNA could be entrapped in the complex; at ratio of 8:1, the spherical complexes with mean size of nanoscale were formed without free DNA, but no typical toroid patterns were observed, which might stem from the strong compact of DNA caused by highly charged chitosan. It was supposed that the strong interaction of chitosan with DNA possibly prevented gene unpacking from chitosan vector, consequently restraining gene expression in nucleus.

Abstract:In the hexagonal columnar phase of chiral polymers a bias towards cholesteric twist competes with braiding along an average direction. When the chirality is strong, topological defects proliferate, leading to either a tilt grain boundary phase or a new ``moire state'' with twisted bond order. This moire phase can melt leading to a new phase: the chiral hexatic. I will discuss some recent experimental results from the NIH on DNA liquid crystals in the context of these theories.

Chirality-Induced Magnetic Polarization by Charge Localization in a Chiral Supramolecular Crystal

Abstract:The chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect is a fascinating phenomenon that correlates the molecular structure with electron spin-polarization (SP). Experimental procedures to quantify the spin-filtering magnitude have extensively used magnetic-field-dependent conductive AFM. In this work chiral crystals of imide-substituted coronene bisimide ((S)-CBI-GCH) are studied to explain the dynamics of the current-voltage I - V spectra and the origin of superimposed peaks are investigated. A dynamic voltage-sweep rate-dependent phenomenon can give rise to complex I - V curves. The redox group, capable of localization of charge, acts as a localized state that interferes with the continuum of the π - π stacking, giving rise to Fano resonances. A novel mechanism for dynamic transport is introduced, which provides insight into the origin of spin-polarized charge in crystallized CBI-GCH molecules after absorption on a metallic substrate, guided by transient charge polarization. Crucially, interference between charge localization and delocalization during transport may be important properties in understanding the magnetochiral phenomena observed by electrostatic force microscopy. Finally, it is observed that charge trapping sensitively modifies the injection barrier from direct tunneling to Fowler-Nordheim tunneling transport supporting nonlinearity in CISS for this class of molecules.

Abstract:In this work, a novel cube-shaped cationic lipid based on the imidazolium salt of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) was complexed with double-stranded DNA. Because of the negative spontaneous curvature of the cationic POSS imidazolium lipid, an inverted hexagonal phase resulted above the melting point of POSS crystals. Depending on the competition between the crystallization of POSS molecules and the negative spontaneous curvature of cationic POSS imidazolium lipids, different self-assembled phase morphologies were obtained. A lamellar phase was obtained when the POSS crystallization was relatively slow. When the POSS crystallization was fast, an inverted hexagonal phase was obtained with POSS lamellar crystals grown in the interstitials of DNA cylinders. On the basis of a circular dichroism study, double-stranded DNA adopted the B-form helical conformation in the inverted hexagonal phase, whereas the helical conformation was largely destroyed in the lamellar phase.

Abstract:This Communication reports, for the first time, that enantiopure phosphonic acids can serve as chirality-inducing agents towards homochiral coordination polymers. Hence homochiral chain compounds (M)- or (P)-Co(SO4)(1,3-bbix)(H2O)3 (1M or 1P) are obtained successfully using an achiral precursor of 1,3-bis((1H-benzo[d]imidazol-1-yl)methyl)benzene (1,3-bbix) in the presence of a catalytic amount of (S)- or (R)-3-phenyl-2-((phosphonomethyl)amino)propanoic acid [(S)- or (R)-2-ppapH3]. Furthermore, compound 1M provides the first example of homochiral cobalt compounds showing field-induced single ion magnet behavior.
Natural and Anthropogenic Source of Heavy Metals Pollution in the Soil Samples of an Industrial Complex; a Case Study

Abstract:Background: Soil serves as a major reservoir for contaminants as it can bind to various chemicals. The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels of some metals (Cd, Cu, Fe and V) in soil samples collected from different stations of Ahvaz Industrial Complex II to determine the natural and anthropogenic contribution of metal in the soil. Methods: This was an experimental study that carried out in 2013. Soil samples were obtained from 9 stations and were subjected to bulk digestion and chemical partitioning. Concentrations of Cd, Cu, Fe and V in soil were determined by ICP-OES. Contaminant factor (CF) and geoaccumulation index (I-geo) were used to evaluate the soil pollution in the samples. ANOVA, Duncan Multiple Range and Pearson correlation coefficient matrix tests was used to analyze the data. Results: According to I-geo results, the soil samples of the Ahvaz Industrial Complex II could be classified as strongly to very strongly pollute for Cd and it was unpolluted to moderately pollute for Cu, Fe and V. The amount of anthropogenic pollution was more than that of natural sources and the anthropogenic order of metals pollution was Fe (88%)> Cu (83%)> Cd (75%)> V (61%).
Molecular engineering of chiral colloidal liquid crystals using DNA origami

Abstract:Establishing precise control over the shape and the interactions of the microscopic building blocks is essential for design of macroscopic soft materials with novel structural, optical and mechanical properties. Here, we demonstrate robust assembly of DNA origami filaments into cholesteric liquid crystals, 1D supramolecular twisted ribbons and 2D colloidal membranes. The exquisite control afforded by the DNA origami technology establishes a quantitative relationship between the microscopic filament structure and the macroscopic cholesteric pitch. Furthermore, it also enables robust assembly of 1D twisted ribbons, which behave as effective supramolecular polymers whose structure and elastic properties can be precisely tuned by controlling the geometry of the elemental building blocks. Our results demonstrate the potential synergy between DNA origami technology and colloidal science, in which the former allows for rapid and robust synthesis of complex particles, and the latter can be used to assemble such particles into bulk materials.

Abstract:The effect of chiral metal complexes ([Co(en)(3)]I(3)·H(2)O, cis-[CoBr(NH(3))(en)(2)]Br(2), K[Co(edta)]·2H(2)O and [Ru(phen)(3)](PF(6))(2)) on the polymer-bound J-aggregates in aqueous mixtures of pesudoisocyanine (PIC) iodine and poly(acrylic acid, sodium)(PAAS) have been studied by UV-vis absorption, circular dichroism (CD) and fluorescence spectra. At low concentration, the PIC monomers could self-assemble to form supermolecules by binding to each of the COO(-) groups on the polymer chains through electrostatic interactions. After the addition of chiral metal complexes to the formed PIC-PAAS J-aggregates, we found that only the chiral multiple π-conjugated phenanthroline metal complexes could transfer their metal-centered chiral information to the formed J-aggregates. The chiral J-aggregates showed a characteristic induced circular dichroism (ICD) in the visible region of J-band chromophore, and the ICD signals depend on the absolute configuration, concentration of the chiral multiple π-conjugated metal complexes, as well as temperature. More interestingly, the supramolecular chirality of the polymer supported PIC J-aggregates could be memorized even after the addition of an excess opposite chiral complex enantiomers. This is in sharp contrast to the behavior in the high concentrated NaCl induced PIC-J aggregates, in which the optical rotation of a mixture of two enantiomers varies linearly with their ratio.
