Abstract:OBJECTIVE To determine the visual outcome and incidence of complications after posterior capsule rupture during phacoemulsification. METHODS Sixty-six eyes of 66 patients which sustained posterior capsule rupture were retrospectively studied. RESULT Fifty-two out of 66 eyes had best corrected visual acuity of 20/40 or better. The complications included corneal edema (42 eyes), iris injury (1 eye), pupil decentration (5 eyes), intraocular hypertension (4 eyes), intraocular lens dislocation (1 eye), cystoid macular edema (3 eyes), remain of lens material (2 eyes) and retinal detachment (2 eyes). CONCLUSIONS Phacoemulsification, even if complicated by posterior capsule rupture, is compatible with good visual outcome. Immediate proper management of complications is important.
