Abstract:A palladium-mediated assembling strategy was developed to construct organized, three-dimensional multiporphyrin arrays, wherein layers of multiporphyrin arrays can be embedded via a Py-Pd-Py coordination unit directly on solid substrates. Multilayers of the multiporphyrin arrays were characterized by use of X-ray photoelectron, UV-vis, and fluorescence spectroscopy. A linear increase was observed for the absorption intensity of the Soret band of porphyrins or the pi-pi* charge transition with the layer numbers of porphyrins or palladium ions assembled. The surface density of (Zn)TPyP molecules in one layer of multiporphyrin arrays was estimated to be in the range of 1.9-2.4 x 10(-10) mol/cm(2). The orientation angle of the porphyrin macrocycles was in the range of 55-60degrees. A schematic model for the multiporphyrin arrays was proposed based on the spectral analysis, orientation angle, and film thickness from atomic force microscopy measurement. These Pd-mediated multiporphyrin arrays showed high thermal and chemical stability. They were stable in air and commonly used organic solvents. Moreover, no significant absorption spectral change was recorded in a temperature up to 150 degreesC and in an aqueous solution with pH < 2.

Abstract:A water-chloroform interface was developed for the synthesis and assembly of the cadmium-mediated multiporphyrin arrays. With the use of a vertical dipping method, multilayers of the multiporphyrin can be deposited onto hydrophobic substrate surfaces. An in situ absorbance measurement at the water-porphyrin chloroform interface revealed a blue shift for the porphyrin Soret band after the addition of CdCl 2 into the water phase. The transferred multilayers showed a broad Soret band from 430 to 442 nm, which is ascribed to monomer-like porphyrin arrangement in the planar layer and aggregates in the interlayer. The orientation angle of porphyrin macrocycles is about 30°. The porphyrin emission properties in the present multilayers are compared to those in the monomer and aggregate prepared from the air-water/ CdCl 2 subphase surfaces.
Multiporphyrin Array from Interfacial Metal-Mediated Assembly and Its Langmuir−Blodgett Films

Abstract:The Cd2+-mediated assembly of multiporphyrin arrays at air-subphase interfaces has been studied. Surface pressure-area isotherms for the monolayers of zinc tetrapyridylporphyrin (ZnTPyP) showed that the mean ZnTPyP molecular area was 0.65 and 1.9 nm(2) on water and 0.1 M Cd2+ subphase surfaces, respectively. Spectroscopic measurements indicated that absorption of the ZnTPyP Soret band was 11 nm redshifted in the monolayer of the Cd2+-ZnTPyP multiporphyrin array, but 23 nm redshifted in the ZnTPyP monolayer, and that the Cd2+-linked network structure of the multiporphyrin array was retained after its monolayer was transferred onto a solid plate. Similar orientation angles between the mean porphyrin plane and the substrate surface were measured for the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of either Cd2+-ZnTPyP multiporphyrin arrays or ZnTPyP. On the basis of these results, we developed schematic models of the monolayers or LB films of Cd2+-ZnTPyP multiporphyrin arrays and ZnTPyP aggregates. An emission spectral comparison between the LB film of ZnTPyP and that of the Cd2+-ZnTPyP multiporphyrin array indicated a significant quenching in the former case, due to the formation of ZnTPyP aggregates, but not in the Cd2+-ZnTPyP multiporphyrin array, the observation of which strongly supports our schematic models.

Abstract:Metal-mediated assembly for the hybrid multilayers of multiporphyrin arrays of zinc 5,10,15,20-tetrapyridylporphyrin (ZnTPyP) with three kinds of pyridyl derivatives, poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PVP), 4,4′-bipyridyl (Bpy) and 2,4,6-tri(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine (TPyTa), have been constructed directly on solid surfaces. The assembly process was characterized with the use of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and absorption spectroscopy. The Soret absorption intensity of ZnTPyP was proportional to the layer numbers, indicating a similar amount of ZnTPyP was assembled for each layer. The average surface density of ZnTPyP molecules per layer was estimated to be in the range of 3.5–4.0×10−10mol/cm2. Orientation angle for the porphyrin macrocycles relative to the substrate surface was about 50–60° for the multilayers of Pd–ZnTPyP, Pd–ZnTPyP–Bpy, Pd–ZnTPyP–TPyTa, and about 80° for the Pd–ZnTPyP–PVP, respectively. Atomic force microscopic images showed that the domain sizes and shapes of the hybrid multilayer arrays closely related to the inserted layers (PVP, BPy or TPyTa).

Abstract:Pd-mediated multi-metalloporphyrin arrays have been constructed at the air–water interface. Monolayer behaviors and spectroscopic properties of the arrays closely related to the central ions of metalloporphyrins. It was found that, although oxo[5,10,15,20-tetra(4-pyridyl)porphinato]titanium (TiOTPyP) was unable to form condensed monolayer on the pure water surface, it could be stabilized on the K2PdCl4 subphase surface due to the formation of Pd-TiOTPyP multiporphyrin arrays. Among the three kinds of multiporphyrin arrays investigated, zinc 5,10,15,20-tetra(4-pyridyl)porphine (ZnTPyP) showed largest average molecular area and lowest collapsed surface pressure on the 0.3–0.5mmol/l K2PdCl4 subphase surfaces. Compared with the absorption spectra in solutions, porphyrin Soret band red shifted in the monolayers and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of multiporphyrin arrays, the extent of this red shift closely related to the central ions of porphyrins. Moreover, fluorescence emissions were partly quenched in the LB films of multi-metalloporphyrin arrays.

Abstract:Metal-mediated multiporphyrin arrays have attracted much attention because of their potential interests in mimicking photosynthetic reactions in nature, solar energy transfer and in the development of coordination polymer nanomaterials. This paper reviews recent developments in the interfacial assembly of metal-mediated multiporphyrin arrays, their nanocrystals, and metal-mediated porphyrin/triazine coordination polymer nanotubes. We summarize the influences of the metal ions in the solution phases, porphyrin and ligand structures on the absorption and fluorescence spectra of the porphyrin rings in the monolayers and organized thin films of multiporphyrin arrays/coordination polymers, as well as the influences of the geometric features of the metal ions on the morphologies and structures of the nanostructural materials produced at the liquid-liquid interfaces.

Abstract:Multilayer nanocomposite films composed of negative charged Ag nanosized particles and cationic polyallylamine hydrochloride (PAH) molecules were fabricated on polymer modified single-crystal silicon and flat glass slides by a layer-by-layer (LBL) molecular self-assembly technique. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis showed that the formed Ag particles successfully absorbed onto the positively charged surfaces. The atomic force microscopy image of a two-cycle Ag/PAH bilayer film showed that no surface damage or defects existed on the thin-films surface. The Ag particles were densely and homogeneously distributed on the surface and relatively uniform in size. Goniometry was employed to verify the assembly process and the water contact angles oscillated regularly, depending on the composition of the outermost layer. By using the LBL deposition technique, a molecular-level ordered multilayer film with the thickness up to 40 layers (20 bilayers) was obtained. Results from UV–vis spectroscopy and ellipsometry measurements revealed that the self-assembly of the Ag/PAH multilayer film was well quantitative and reproducible. Thus we can conclude that the consecutive LBL deposition technique is a feasible and effective way to produce multilayer film and control the surface properties.
Well-defined, rigid multiporphyrin arrays: interfacial synthesis and optical properties in monolayer assemblies

Abstract:We report a readily available strategy to prepare multiporphyrin arrays by using Cd 2+ - mediated assembly of tetrapyridylporphyrin (TPyP) on Cd 2+ subphase surface. By using Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique, monolayers were transferred onto solid supports as multilayers intercalated by dipalmitoylphosphatidylthioethanol. Only 4-nm red shift of porphyrin Soret band was measured in the LB film of Cd 2+ -TPyP multiporphyrin array whilst 25-nm was measured in the TPyP LB film. Similar orientation angle was estimated for porphyrin rings in LB films of either TPyP or Cd 2+ -TPyP multiporphyrin array.

Abstract:Pd(II)/Fe(II)-mediated three-dimensional bimetal-organic multilayers have been constructed on the substrate surfaces with the use of a polymeric ligand of terpyridine-contained poly(vinylpyridine) (PVPTPy) derivative as a linker as well as inorganic salts of Na2PdCl4 and Fe(BF4)(2) as connectors. The assembly process was monitored by measuring the absorption spectra, which revealed two main absorption bands at wavelengths of 250 similar to 340 nm and about 580 nm corresponding to the electron transition of pyridyl or terpyridyl substituents as well as metal-ligand charge transfer, respectively. X-Ray photoelectron spectra revealed that the multilayer of (Pd) Fe-PVPTPy was composed of the elements of B(1s), Cl(2p), C(1s), Pd(3d), N(1s), O(1s), F(1s) and Fe(2p), which confirmed formation of the bimetal-organic multilayers. Morphologies of the multilayers were characterized by using scanning electron microscope and atomic force microscopy. Cyclic voltammograms revealed a couple of irreversible redox waves with cathodic peaks appearing in the potential range from -0.2 to -0.4 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), which related to the scan rates and layer numbers of the multilayers. This redox wave was designated as one electron transfer of Fe(II)-PVPTPy/Fe(III)-PVPTPy in the multilayers. The current density of the redox wave decreased with increasing layer numbers of the films due to an increase of the film resistance. Both the polymeric ligand and its bimetal-organic multilayers showed a broad emission at wavelengths of 390 similar to 450 nm. A red shift for the maximum emission band was recorded in the (Pd) Fe-PVPTPy films. Because the transition metal ions can selectively coordinate with either pyridyl or terpyridyl coordinative site, the present method may be developed to design and construct the desired multi-functional metal-organic hybrid materials.

Abstract:Multilayers of manganese(III) porphyrin-linked poly(vinylpyridinium) (MnTMPyP-PVPMe) polyelectrolyte and poly(styrenesulfonic acid-o-maleic) acid (PSS) have been assembled on gold, quartz, and indium tin oxide surfaces by a layer-by-layer (LBL) technique. The assembly process was monitored by measuring their absorption spectra and frequency change after each assembly, both of which confirmed the formation of three-dimensional MnTMPyP-PVPMe/PSS multilayers. The Soret absorption band of porphyrin red shifted about 8 nm in the multilayer compared with that in the dilute aqueous solution. The average mass changes for each assembly of MnTMPyP-PVPMe and PSS were estimated to be about 2.9 and 0.25 μg/cm(2), respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectra revealed that the as-prepared multilayers were composed of S 2p, C 1s, N 1s, O 1s, and Mn 2p, corresponding to polymers of MnTMPyP-PVPMe and PSS. A rough surface was observed after the assembly of MnTMPyP-PVPMe on the gold surface, but it became smoother when the PSS layer was adsorbed. The significant difference in the mass change and film morphology after the assembly of MnTMPyP-PVPMe compared to those after the assembly of PSS was ascribed to the reason that the MnTMPyP-PVPMe polyelectrolyte contained large metalloporphyrin macrocycles, which were axially coordinated to the pyridyl substituents of the PVP polymeric backbones. The cyclic voltammograms revealed two couples of redox waves in the phosphate electrolyte solution at pH 11, which corresponded to the electron-transfer processes of Mn(II)/Mn(III) and Mn(III)/Mn(IV) of polymeric manganese porphyrin MnTMPyP-PVPMe. The charge-transfer process was also investigated. Finally, the present MnTMPyP-PVPMe/PSS multilayers were used as a heterogeneous catalyst for the decoloration of an azo dye.
Thin Films of Porphyrin-Perylene Molecular Array Fabricated by Electrophoresis Methodology

Abstract:Thin solid films of organic conjugated molecules are at the center of organic electronics. Low solubility and high sublimation temperature of porphyrin-perylene arrays make it impossible to fabricate uniform solid films with spin-coating and vacuum deposition methodology, though these arrays have important applications in the area of opto-electronics. Here we show that high quality thin films of a porphyrin-perylene array can be prepared by electrochemical deposition, a facile and widely used film-forming technique. The electrophoretic species are protonated porphyrin-perylene molecules, which allow us to grow molecular array films on electrodes. By annealing in ammonia atmosphere or in vacuum at elevated temperature, the protons coordinated with molecular arrays on the deposited films can be eliminated and the porphyrin-perylene arrays recovered to their pristine state.

Abstract:Coordination polymers (CPs) can encapsulate small molecules within their nanosized coordination cages to form hybrid supramolecular materials. We reported here assembly of Pd(II)-mediated CP multilayers on the substrate surfaces by layer-by-layer method with six kinds of multidentate ligands as linkers, which included 4,4′-bipyridyl (BPy), binaphthylbis(amidopyridyl) (BNBAPy), tris(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine (TPyTa), tetra(4-pyridyl)porphyrin (TPyP), ligand-like complex of Fe(pyterpy)2 (pyterpy: 4′-(4-pyridyl)-2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine), and poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PVP). The multilayer assembly process was characterized by using UV–vis absorption spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectra. Electrochemical behaviors of the as-prepared CP-modified electrodes were investigated in hexacyanoferrate solution, which revealed well-reversible redox waves of Fe(CN)63−/4− ions for the electrode covered with the Pd–TPyTa or Pd–Fe(pyterpy)2, while irreversible ones for the electrode covered with the Pd–BPy or Pd–PVP. The results indicated that Fe(CN)63−/4− ions could reach electrode surface across the CP multilayers of TPyTa or Pd–Fe(pyterpy)2, which was attributed to the fact that their coordination cages were large enough for the Fe(CN)63−/4− ions to penetrate through. Charge-transfer diffusion coefficient (D) was calculated based on chronocoulomograms of the CP multilayer-modified electrodes. D was in the range from 0.34×10−10 to 1.3×10−10cm2/s for the electrodes modified by four layers of Pd–TPyP, Pd–BNBAPy, Pd–TPyTa and Pd–Fe(pyterpy)2, respectively. The present methodology provides a facile way to construct three-dimensional supramolecular materials on the solid surfaces as well as to study the charge-transfer behaviors in artificial membranes.

Abstract:Polymeric zinc porphyrin derivatives have been synthesized through an axial coordination reaction of zinc tetra(pyridylporphyrin) chloride tetrakis(methochloride) (ZnTMPyP) with poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PVP). The molar fractions of ZnTMPyP relative to pyridyl substituents of PVP in the as-prepared ZnTMPyP-PVP polymers were 1:30 and 1:250. Palladium (II) directed Pd/ZnTMPyP-PVP coordination polymer multilayers were constructed on the quartz and gold substrate surfaces by the layer-by-layer (LBL) method with the use of Na2PdCl4 as the connector and the polymeric zinc porphyrins as the linkers. Compositions, film structure and morphologies of the LBL multilayers were characterized by using UV–vis absorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscope, scanning electron microscope and atomic force microscope. The fluorescence emission properties of the porphyrins in the LBL multilayers were similar to those in the methanol solutions. The emission lifetime was about 1.36 and 0.16ns for the zinc porphyrins in the ZnTMPyP-PVP30 solution and LBL multilayers, respectively. It was revealed that the present Pd/ZnTMPyP-PVP LBL multilayers could be used as heterogeneous photocatalyst for the degradation of methyl orange under irradiation at room temperature. Because the multilayers were anchored on the substrate surface through covalent and coordinative bonding, they were of high stability, good recyclability, and facile separation from the reaction system.

Abstract:Precisely layered molecular heterostructures are promising but still largely unexplored materials, with the potential to complement and enhance the scope of two-dimensional heterostructures. The controlled epitaxial growth of vertically stacked molecular layers connected through tailored linkers, can lead to significant development in the field. Here, we demonstrate that sequential assembly of prototypical iron porphyrins and axial ligands can be steered via temperature-programmed desorption, and monitored by mass spectrometry and by high-resolution atomic force microscopy under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. Complementary photoelectron spectroscopy analysis delivers chemical insight into the formation of layer-by-layer nanoarchitectures. Abstract:This paper presents a summary of the efforts in fabricating stable layer-by-layer self-assemblies, which are achieved through combination of ionic self-assembly and post chemical reaction. We concentrate on multilayer fabrication using a photoreactive diazo resin (DAR) as the polycation to alternately assemble with species containing sulfonate or carboxylic groups in their backbone, and the post photoreaction that changes the electrostatic interaction at the interfaces into covalent bonds. As been shown, the stability of thus assembled multilayers is increased dramatically.

Abstract:In this work, a metal-mediated assembling strategy has been used to organize a series of new assemblies based on tetrapyridylporphyrin () on nanostructured TiO2 electrode surfaces, wherein the metal ions (, = Zn(2+), Cd(2+), Hg(2+) and Mn(2+)) bridge the pyridyl units of and (E)-4-[(pyridin-4-ylmethylene)-amino]benzoic acid (), resulting in a assembled mode. The assembled structures were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), computational calculations, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), IR, UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectra. The performances of the assembly-sensitized solar cells were also measured under an irradiance of 100 mW cm(-2) AM 1.5G sunlight. Photoelectrochemical results reveal a relatively large photocurrent of the device. Simultaneously, a large open-circuit photovoltage and a significantly improved conversion efficiency of the device are also observed. These findings may serve as another good testing ground for the fabrication of supramolecular solar cells in future.

Abstract:Construction of highly stable covalently attached multilayer films containing porphyrins was achieved by UV irradiation of ionic self-assembled multilayer films of diazo-resins (DAR) and tetrasodium 5,10,15,20-tetraphenyl-21H,23H-porphine-P,P',P ",P"'-tetrasulfonic acid (tpps(4)).

Abstract:Interesting multilayered nanostructures of molecular-scale alternating titania nanosheet and silver metal have been successfully fabricated by combined use of a layer-by-layer route and an in situ room-temperature ultraviolet irradiation technique with a titania nanosheet and a polyethylenimine−Ag+ (PEI−Ag+) complex as the electrostatic building blocks. The consecutive buildup of the PEI/Ti1-δO2/(PEI−Ag+/Ti1-δO2)n-1 film was monitored by UV−vis absorption spectroscopy. The nearly linear increase in absorbance as a function of the sequential assembly number for the multilayer film indicates that almost same amount of materials was deposited in each dipping cycle. The tunable repeating ordered structure of titania nanosheet−silver multilayer films can be obtained by varying the concentration ratio of Ag+ to the repeating unit of PEI, essential for meeting the demands on the diverse application of the multilayer films.
